Shrek 2
By Baron Dave Romm
Let's Play Doctor, the most recent Shockwave Radio Theater CD, is dedicated to the memory of Richard Biggs. Biggs, Dr. Franklin on Babylon 5 and in many other roles, died a few months after we were both Guest of Honor at Marscon 2004. The CD has the live play from the con, my interview with Dr. Demento, Shockwave promos from Dr. D and Dr. Franklin, and a bunch of bumpers (short bits) recorded by the Marscon attendeesfor the Dr. Demento Show. Also included is an interview with Peter Woodward from Marscon 2002. You can order by arranging with me through e-mail or order direct via PayPal. Makes a great gift. No home should be without one!
Sequels are a tricky business. Some are just used to capitalize on the success of the original. Some are, by design, the middle of a trilogy. And some manage to capture the fun, if not the magic, of the original. Shrek 2 falls into the latter category.
Like the original, Shrek 2 takes every fairy tale (and a few other things) and rips them into little pieces. I knew I was going to like the movie from the opening montage, showing Shrek and Fiona on their honeymoon. The newlyweds run from the sea to the beach, fall down and smooch, and get covered with surf ala From Here To Eternity. The wave flows back to reveal Shrek and Ariel. Fiona grabs the little mermaid by the tail and flings her far out to sea. It's a quick scene, yet another throwaway gag that you might miss if you blink. There are a lot of these moments.
While all the characters are from a fairy tale or two (except Shrek himself, who came from the book), few of the characters behave in a typical manner. Indeed, very much unlike fairy tales, most of the strong characters are women. They get their men to do things and run around. Shrek is the major character and has the most scenes, but he mostly reacts to what Fiona or the Fairy Godmother are doing.
Eddie Murphy is having a lot of fun as the donkey. His manic, rapid-fire, delivery has great comic timing. Fiona's parents are voiced by John Cleese and Julie Andrews. Antonio Banderas, as Puss 'n Boots, swashbuckles his feline way through the movie.
This has been a good summer for the British comedy duo of French and Saunders. Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), plays the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2. Dawn French plays the painting outside the Gryffindor common room to which Harry Potter and company try to give the password.
All in all, a good sequel. You could probably see Shrek 2 without seeing the original and not lose much. On the Shockwave scale of 9 to 23, where 9 is bad and 23 is good, I'd give Shrek 2 about a 19. I had fun.
Now, if only I can get around to seeing Fahrenheit 9/11.

Re: A Visit from Bush
On the 4th Bush will visit Charleston WV to ruin our 4th. Here is a copy of
an e-mail I have sent to all local papers and to local officials
"I am giving fair warning. If the City of Charleston, Kanawha County or
anyone else sets up protest zones or in any way excludes me from showing up
to protest Bush I will sue the organization. These zones have now been
ruled illegal in 10 different courts and no one has any business trying to
create one. After all, the first 4th was a protest against another King
George."

Re: Newt Gingrich
Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich was among those who most
vociferously demanded Bill Clinton's impeachment (for his dalliance
with Monica Lewinsky). It was later learned that while he delivered
speech after speech excoriating the president, he himself had been
carrying on a years-long affair with a congressional staffer young
enough to be his daughter!
[At the same time, Gingrich, according to Judicial Watch, "killed or
watered down every major House investigation into the alleged
illegalities in the Clinton Administration, fearing that his own
predicament will be pursued in retaliation. Democrats have made it
clear that the tax ramifications of Gingrich's non-profit plea
bargain, could also be explored further. In the words of Republican
Congressman Peter King, Gingrich has been the equivalent of
'political road kill.'"]

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Bit cooler, but nice.
This afternoon 2 kids showed up at the front door with a kitten, saying they found it in the street, and figured it had to belong to us.
We weren't short any kittens, but I still offered it to them. They said they weren't allowed, and if it didn't belong to us they'd set it loose.
So, another kitten has been added to the brood. Ack.

No. 1 Hit Across America
'Fahrenheit 9/11'
Bush-bashing became the nation's favorite spectator sport over the weekend as Michael Moore's red-hot documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" earned more in its first three days of release across North America than his previous record-breaking movie did in its entire run.
According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "Fahrenheit 9/11," in which Moore takes aim at resident Bush, and the war in Iraq, opened at No. 1 after selling about $21.8 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada since June 25.
All told, the movie's total stands at $21.96 million, because it got a head-start on Wednesday in two Manhattan theaters to help build more media buzz before expanding to a relatively modest 868 theaters two days later. (By contrast, most of the other movies in the top five were playing in more than 2,500 theaters each.)

Keith Richards will pay tribute to his late pal, country rock pioneer Gram Parsons, by performing at two all-star charity concerts in California next month, organizers said on Sunday.
The Rolling Stones guitarist will join the lineup of Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons, on July 9 at the Santa Barbara Bowl and July 10 at the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood.
Other performers will include Norah Jones, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam, Raul Malo/The Mavericks, John Doe, eastmountainsouth, Kathleen Edwards and Jay Farrar.
The concerts (www.gramparsonstribute.com) are being organized by Parsons' daughter, Polly, with net proceeds going to the Musicians' Assistance Program, which provides drug and alcohol rehabilitation to members of the music industry.

Packs Box Office Punch
More 'Fahrenheit 9/11'
"Fahrenheit 9/11" shattered all expectations, as well as box office records for documentaries, with an opening-weekend gross of $21.8 million.
Pic played in just 868 theaters -- minuscule compared to normal Hollywood release patterns. But the $25,115 average per location reflected sellouts throughout the country, as people flocked to see a movie that has dominated headlines for weeks.
It was also the best opening for a Cannes Palme d'Or winner, beating "Pulp Fiction's" $9.3 million. And it marks the first time the weekend's No. 1 film has played at fewer than 1,000 theaters since 1994, when "Four Weddings and a Funeral" pulled in $4.2 million from 721 venues.
"It played beautifully in the red states and the blue states," Lions Gate prexy Tom Ortenberg said. "We literally sold out Peoria. We sold out Fayetteville, N.C., the home of Fort Bragg."

U.S. Imposes New Limits
Scientists
The U.S. government is making it harder for scientists to speak to their global colleagues and restricting who can attend an upcoming major AIDS conference, a congressman charged on Thursday.
Rep. Henry Waxman said he has a letter showing that the Health and Human Services Department has imposed new limits on who may speak to the World Health Organization.
Under the new policy, WHO must ask HHS for permission to speak to scientists and must allow HHS to choose who will respond.

Bonham Carter - Burton
Actress Helena Bonham Carter and film director Tim Burton are the parents of a newborn baby boy. Bonham Carter gave birth to the couple's first child, whom they have not yet named, in London on Saturday, said Nicki Van Gelder, the actress' agent.
The two met when Burton, 45, directed Bonham Carter, 37, in the remake of the sci-fi movie "Planet of The Apes."
They live in adjoining houses in north London and recently connected the homes with a door.

Moby, Dick and a Lunachick celebrated a rite of summer in Brooklyn's annual Mermaid Parade, joining about 1,500 people who marched along the Coney Island boardwalk, many in nautical dress.
Techno artist Moby and punk rocker Theo Kogan of the Lunachicks were crowned as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid at the 22nd annual event on Saturday. Moby thanked the cheering crowd, joking that he was "enjoying the fruits of my power."
The parade is the creation of the tattooed and goateed Dick Zigun, who marched beneath a top hat.

Wagner
Richard Wagner joined the likes of Oasis and Paul McCartney at the Glastonbury Festival on Sunday - the first time in the event's 23-year history that opera has featured in the lineup.
The English National Opera staged the third act of Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" on the final day of the three-day event.
Sunday-morning revelers were treated to a five-minute introductory blast of the piece familiar from the film "Apocalypse Now" by the 91-piece orchestra, followed by a less familiar 50 minutes of sung drama featuring 11 soloists.

'Survivor' Gives Bikinis to Museum
Amber Brkich
The firefighting display at local museum is creating a lot of heat, thanks to a bikini donation by Survivor winner Amber Brkich. Brkich, who got $1 million and a fiancee while winning "Survivor All-Stars," was arguably the biggest draw for the 200 people who turned out for an exhibit Saturday celebrating firefighters in her western Pennsylvania hometown.
The Beaver Area Historical Museum exhibit is anchored by a hand-operated pumper from 1836. But Brkich has her own exhibit from her time on "Survivor Australian Outback" and "Survivor All-Stars." Items on display include the bikinis she wore, a boomerang from an immunity challenge, a leather canteen and a blindfold.
History doesn't necessarily have to be old, explained Mark Minor, a museum board member. "There are people making history right now in 2004, and Amber is certainly one of those," he said.

9 out of 10 Back 'Fahrenheit'
Film Reviewers
They like Mike. While the country as a whole appears split, along political lines, over the controversial Michael Moore documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," movie reviewers at U.S. daily newspapers are not.
An E & P survey of 63 daily papers that ran reviews, in "red" and "blue" states alike, finds that 56 gave the film a positive nod, with only 7 abstaining, an almost 90% favorable rating.

A Hit in America
Estonian Pianos
More than 50 years after Josef Stalin set up the Soviet Union's premier piano plant in this Baltic Sea state, the despot's favorite pianos are back in red-hot demand - in the United States.
After Stalin received an Estonian-made piano as a gift, the iron-fisted ruler established the Estonia Piano Factory and made sure it was the U.S.S.R.'s sole concert piano supplier.
But when the Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991, so did the factory's only market. By 1995, production had fallen from 500 to 50 pianos a year.
That's when concert pianist Indrek Laul, then 27 and recently graduated from New York's Juilliard School of Music, offered to buy the plant. Convinced it was a sinking ship, shareholders gladly accepted.
