How To Write A Letter To The Editor, part 4
By Baron Dave Romm
A good editorial/opinion section will present a wide range of opinions, and balance out an editorial with a counterpoint and/or letters. You can tell a bad editorial page if most of the columnists agree with the editorial and most of the letters agree with the columnists.
There are numberous legitimate reasons a newspaper doesn't print a letter, and I don't blame them for not running my epistles every time I take finger to keyboard. Nonetheless, as I've described in previous columns, your letter is more likely to be printed if you are grammatically correct, polite, factual, short and to the point.
The newspaper will write its own headline for any letter.
My local newspaper is the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It's a pretty good newspaper, but tends to lean a bit to the right nowadays (and you can tell by how many dittoheads start off their letter by accusing them of being liberal...) and is usually a day or two behind in publishing stories or columnists that appeared in other papers first. I regularly write letters and call Lou Gelfand, the paper's reader representative. Lou is pretty good, and his column in the opinion section of the the Sunday paper is worth reading, though he definitely has a right wing slant.
What follows are some of my letters to the Star Tribune, as I wrote them, not necessarily as they were published. I also included my phone number and city (though they know who I am...) I usually don't keep a clipping or the whole paper, so most of the historical perspective is from memory, which is why I'll run these in reverse chronological order.
[Sent 5/29/03, with the subject line "Bush lied to our troops"]
This was published June 2, 2003, unedited (minus the reference urls) with the headline "1 vote for impeachment". The reference urls were not only for the newspaper, but for anyone else I might copy the e-mail to. I haven't checked, but newspaper articles tend to get archived quickly and might not be up.
As usual, I got several responses. From the left, people called and left messages on my answering machine, identifying themselves and thanking me for "a wonderful letter". I had a greater than usual number of "uh..." hangups, and an insulting postcard from someone, unsigned. With very few exceptions, whetehr they agree or disagree with your position, a liberal will identify him or herself, but the cowardly conservatives will be incredibly nasty and scatalogical and refuse to identify themselves. This time, I didn't get any death threats.
[Sent 5/21/03 with the subject line, "Being ashamed", after a GOP state legislator made Trent Lott-like remarks and was defended by the racist right and a Democratic staffer (not even an elected official) correctly called the remarks racist and the Dems tripped over themselves apologizing.]
This one did not get printed, but several other letters made the same point. Iirc, there was a counterpoint that defended Lindner and took Harvin to task in this same period.
[Sent 5/14/03 with the subject line "Spurned by a Republican". I couldn't resist contrasting the Republican-dominated legislative session with Bill Bennett's self-inflicted wounds.]
This didn't get published, though other letters commented on the subjects at hand.
[Sent 4/27/03 with the subject line "Lindner's free speech" after a letter writer defended the legislator's racist remarks.]
Surprise! This one didn't get printed either.
[Sent 3/12/03 with the subject line "Kersten should be fired". This was an important one, as I caught one of the most egregiously awful members of the Taliban Wing of the GOP in an lie so bad she should be fired for it. Hence all the supporting urls (which I didn't expect them to print); I wanted them to give Kersten the bounce.]
This one they printed, but edited. They didn't print the supporting urls, of course. They didn't print the ending lines (and I forget if they printed the first line about not expecting morals from conservatives), and I did a column for Bartcop-E on the subject already. The editors did change "Kersten out-and-out lied" to "Kersten misled", which was pretty bad, though it they did keep the part about her needing to be fired. And, while I don't think they fired her, her role at the paper has diminished and I haven't seen her column on the main editorial page since. I don't recall that the paper ran a correction for the horrible mistake she made.
Corrections: Doing the aforementioned article for Bartcop-E, I discovered a bit of discrepency in my letter. While Kersten's column was completely wrong and it was irresponsible of her to ignore Ashcroft's cutting of the anti-terrorist budget, his budget cuts were proposed after Moussaoui's hard drive wasn't searched. Ashcroft was to blame for shifting money and personnel away from terrorist investigations and under Janet Reno, Moussaui's hard drive would have been searched, but I should have been clearer.
I'll keep printing more of my letters, used and unused, going back in time until either I run out or they subject matter gets too old to bother citing. I hope potential letter writers use my experience to help them get their point across in a way that newspapers can handle.
Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual artist and a noble of Ladonia with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here, and you can hear the last two Shockwave broadcasts in Real Audio here (scroll down to Shockwave). Thanks to everyone who has sent me music to play on the air, and I'm collecting extra-weird stuff for a possible CD compilation.

'The Campaign Fund Raising Song'
President Bush is expected to raise $200 million for his 2004 campaign. The Dems are desperately trying to raise their own millions. Given the importance both parties attach to such activities these days, a fund raising fight song is clearly in order. Perhaps this one, sung to the tune of "Dixie," will serve.
The Campaign Fund Raising Song
(Sung to the tune of "Dixie")
I love to go to those big fund raisers,
Chicken, peas, and our-guy praisers,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake in, campaign cash.
The air is heavy with pol talk breezy,
Favor trading, slick and sleazy,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake it in, campaign cash.
The courts say moneyıs free speech,
Oh yea! Oh yea!
I think its grand, in this fair land
We count free speech in dollars.
Oh yea! Oh, Yea!
We count free speech in dollars.
Winning office these days isnıt cheap,
You need, the bucks, the votes to reap,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake it in, campaign cash.
In Washington the would-be leaders,
All have running spending meters,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake it in, campaign cash.

Oh yea! Oh yea!

Oh yea! Oh, Yea!

Election gifts ainıt no bribe chit,
Shame, on those, who so describe it,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake it in, campaign cash.
Itıs just a friendly little contribution,
Sanctioned by, the Constitution,
Rake it in, rake it in, rake it in, campaign cash.

Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati wore pink T-shirts with the slogan "Get in touch with your feminine side."
The slogan, part of a marketing campaign that began Sunday, will be used in TV and print ads showing top players in action. The ads make their debut on London billboards this week to coincide with the start of Wimbledon.
"I like it," Capriati said. "It's something new and fresh and cute, and it'll draw attention. It shows that strength can be feminine."
Other players featured include Williams and sister Venus, Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport and Anna Kournikova. The campaign was created in consultation with players.

Pessimistic on Puerto Rico Reefs
Jean-Michel Cousteau
The son of the late ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau toured Puerto Rico's northeastern coastline by helicopter Saturday, saying much of the area's coral reefs appeared to be dead.
"We continue using the ocean as a trash can," Jean-Michel Cousteau told environmentalists and reporters after the tour. He was basing his assessment of Puerto Rico's reefs on appearance and existing data.
Cousteau said ignorance about coral reefs and the hundreds of species they support was contributing to a worldwide trend in coral depletion.

Rachel, NV
FBI agents have confirmed that a search warrant was served Thursday night on the home of a self-described military watchdog in the tiny town of Rachel, near the mysterious Area 51 military base. We've learned this action was initiated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force. The search warrant remains sealed and the FBI won't say what was seized from the home of Rachel resident Chuck Clark. We believe the action was taken because Chuck Clark escorted the I-Team on a tour of the roads surrounding the base. During the visit, he showed us the location of military sensors, hidden on public land. Here's our story.
Retired astronomer and desert rat Chuck Clark has a new hobby. He's prowled the hills and deserts of Lincoln County for several years now, has photographed exotic aircraft in the skies, and keeps an eye on the top secret base known as Area 51. He's even written a book about the place. Over the past few months, he's discovered that the military has been installing secret sensor devices on public lands surrounding the base. Using a frequency counter device, he can tell when his vehicle trips a sensor. When that happens, he looks for the hard-to-spot wire atop the device, and then he digs them up, takes pictures, and puts them back.
Clark isn't a terrorist or spy but is angered that hikers, four wheelers, or photographers are being monitored by the military on public land, miles from the boundary of the base, which is clearly marked by signs.
For the rest, What's the Joint Terrorism Task Force Doing in the Tiny Town of Rachel?
Thanks, Virgil!

Nelson Mandela
Former South African President Nelson Mandela said Friday the United States posed a danger to the world for sidelining the United Nations to make war on Iraq.
The Nobel peace laureate, in Ireland to open the Special Olympics, strongly criticized President Bush for circumventing the United Nations in order to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by force.
"Any organization, any country, any movement that now decides to sideline the United Nations, that country and its leader are a danger to the world," Mandela said in Galway, where he received an honorary degree a day before opening the games.
The 30-minute speech was met by thunderous and sustained applause by an audience of academics and invited guests and by the general public watching nearby.

Ace Frehley Canceled
Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp
Ace Frehley had to cancel his Thursday (June 19) appearance at Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp, the event which brings together non-professionals with well-known musicians for a few days of training. The once (and future?) lead guitarist for Kiss fell down the stairs at his home outside New York City on Wednesday (June 18) and suffered a concussion. Frehley and his wife recently moved into the house, and he was carrying some equipment from the music room down to the basement when he slipped. Frehley wound up at a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and told to take it easy. Frehley's history is well known, but a spokesperson says it was simply a household accident--neither drugs nor alcohol played a role.
Frehley was disappointed, but he still hopes to attend one of the remaining sessions for Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp, which run through Sunday (June 22).
This is the third Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp. The stars involved this time out include Roger Daltrey from the Who, Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad, Simon Kirke from Free and Bad Company, Leslie West from Mountain, Ricky Byrd from Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Joe Lynn Turner from Deep Purple and Rainbow, Marky Ramone from the Ramones, Bob Mayo from Peter Frampton's band, Liberty DeVitto and Mark Rivera from Billy Joel's band, Jack Blades (news) from Night Ranger and Damn Yankees, and former Foghat guitarist Rod Price.

Hard rock act Cold has pulled out of its main stage slot on the upcoming Lollapalooza tour. A statement released by the band's representatives says that Cold "will take a short break from the road."
Although information is scarce, a spokesperson tells Billboard.com the father of bass tech and temporary bassist Larry Melero has passed away. He has been filling in for Cold's Jeremy Marshall, who has been unable to play since breaking his arm late last month.
According to the band's management, also canceled are the group's planned European dates opening for Staind. That stretch was due to kick off Aug. 27 in London.

Wants U.S. to Probe UFOs
Sci Fi Channel
In an unusual step for a television network, the Sci Fi Channel is campaigning to persuade the government to be more forthcoming and aggressive in investigating UFO sightings.
Sci Fi has hired a Washington lobbyist, received support from former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, sponsored a symposium on interstellar travel and is considering a court effort to declassify documents related to a 1965 incident in Pennsylvania.
The network will premiere a documentary, "Out of the Blue," Tuesday at 9 p.m. (Eastern and Pacific time zones) that methodically lays out an argument that there's something out there.
But by fighting for UFO probes, Sci Fi is wading into an area that invites not only dissent, but also ridicule.
The mission isn't entirely altruistic, of course. The Sci Fi Channel, which is seen in about three-quarters of the nation's TV households, polled viewers on the topic. Evidence of keen interest is also seen in the ratings.

Kremlin Closes Major Private TV Station
TVS
The government shut down one of the country's two main private television stations Sunday, forcing off the air a team of journalists at the center of a debate over Russian media freedom.
TVS, created from the ashes of two other television stations that came into conflict with state-connected companies, was yanked off the air early Sunday. It was replaced with a new state-run sports channel. Some employees learned the station had been closed while listening to the radio on their way to work.
Coming ahead of December's parliamentary elections and next year's presidential vote, the demise of TVS gives the government overwhelming influence over what goes out on the nation's airwaves again raising questions about a free press under President Vladimir Putin.

In Memory
Freddie Meeks
Freddie Meeks, a black sailor who was court-martialed by an all-white jury and later pardoned by President Clinton in a mutiny following a deadly port explosion during World War II, died Thursday. He was 83.
Meeks had been in poor health for several months, according to his son, Daryl Meeks.
On July 17, 1944, 320 servicemen were killed and nearly 400 more were injured when two ships loaded with 10,000 tons of ammunition exploded at a naval facility near San Francisco. It was the worst stateside disaster of World War II.
Meeks was among a group of black sailors that refused to return to duty until the safety of working conditions could be assured. The boycotters were court-martialed by an all-white jury, found guilty of mutiny and sentenced to prison and hard labor.
After serving 18 months, Meeks returned to duty. He was discharged in 1946 and his military benefits were later restored.
President Clinton pardoned Meeks in 1999.
