Indigenous Musical Instruments
By Baron Dave Romm
Indigenous Musical Instruments
Didjeridoo Makers and Promoters
Being a very eclectic radio producer, I encounter all sorts of
people and situations that I never would have thought about before.
The theme to Shockwave is Baka, by the English group Outback, and
I've reviewed didjeridoo music in this column. A few days ago I got
this e-mail:
- Dear Baron David E Romm,
-
- As Australia's Didgeridoo Cultural Hub, we would like to
introduce ourselves
to you and to welcome you to browse our website at www.ididj.com.au
-
- We noticed in the link below that you have a didgeridoo shop
recommended [in your review archive]
-
- iDIDJ Australia and our collaborators in the arts field agree that the shop
recommended in your site is selling mostly low quality non-Indigenous made
product. We would much prefer to see the link replaced with one that points
to Australia, as it is here that the instrument has its origins. If our
website finds your consonance, we would be overjoyed to be linked from your
site as this would help the Aboriginal craftsmen that we support and
promote. If you do decide that our website is worthy of inclusion in your
recommended sites, we would be grateful if you could use the following html
code: iDIDJ Australia: Australian Didgeridoo
Cultural Hub
-
- The iDIDJ Australia website, as you will see, is an important repository of
information on the didgeridoo and the web's most comprehensive resource on
the Indigenous source culture of this fascinating instrument.
-
- Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you!
Maybe this is didgeridoo spam (!) or maybe someone really cares
what I say about musical instruments made by indigenous people.
Either way, I feel I owe my loyal readers (and some of the
fly-by-nighters) a further examination into the topic.
I have no connection to and do not implicitly endorse the web
sites mentioned here, including the iDIDJ site above. I present here
some --and only some-- research into native Australian music and
culture. Many indigenous musical performers/shops/festivals are
probably not on the web, and this too is a limiting factor. Caveat
Didgeridoo. And yes, the instrument is spelled differently in
different places.
Note: My examination of didgeridoo music would be helped by
some of these places sending me their CDs, or even a didgeridoo or
two. Thanks in advance.
- Sydney
Music Web
- Review by the Aboriginal and Torres Islander Online site of Emera,
a collection of indigenous music from around Ballarat, VIC. Overview
of some Australian history. Message Stick also has its own
collection of indigenous
links.
- Site for Lewis Burns,
Australian Aboriginal didjeridoo maker/performer, artist, muralist,
consultant. (Worth a click on the link to see the picture of him
playing a didjeridoo in full native costume.)
- Wandoo
Didgeridoo is so complete that they list 45 spellings for the
instrument. They also list a bunch of didgeridoo festivals,
including the 5th Annual Joshua
Tree Festival October 11-17, 2004 in Joshua Tree California.
- I don't think any of these are particularly indigenous to
Australia, but The
Didgeridoo Page has a lot of artists from all over the world
using the instrument in various New Age orchestrations.
- The Didj Shop, The Didgeridoo
Specialists, is unique in that the instrument is spelled with a
'j' and a 'g' in the name of the store. They offer quite a
few products and services. You can listen to streaming mp3s before
you buy. The include a guarantee that "Every didgeridoo on this site
is a genuine termite-hollowed didj". "All artwork on our didjes is
done by Australian Aboriginal artists." There's a whole slew of
Interactive Features (which I didn't interact with), including
"Worldwide Didj Meditation". You can sign the guestbook, make $ by
becoming an Didjshop Affiliate Web
site, and explore the different kind of didjes available. You
can spend the day paging through this site.
- The Indigenous Australia site
is built entirely on Macromedia Flash technology, which didn't open
on my system. Fortunately, the Didgeridoo animation
worked. After a long intro, you get to an interactive display, using
didj background music. I didn't play with it much. Don't bother if
you don't have a fast connection and recent updates of Flash and
other plugins.
- Adrian Ross Management
allows you to enter using Flash or Standard. You can listen to his
music and find out more about the didgeridoo.
- Google's
Music Directory for the Didgeridoo has a lot of links.
- The European Network for Indigenous Australian Rights has the
transcript of a report on Didgeridoo craftsmen
under threat and Didgeridoo popularity
cuts both ways. The site explores aboriginal history, cultural
identity and the stolen generations.
- The Mything
Links site on aboriginal people of Australia is stubbornly
anti-western, "Christopher Columbus, James Cook, Hernando Cortes,
Francisco Pizarro, Francisco Coronado, and so many others -- fine
Christian gentlemen all -- followed a religion that deified two
bachelors and a ghost." It's mostly links, but also has some good
examples of aboriginal artwork.
Someday, perhaps, we'll see a marching band of didgeridoo, bagpipe
and sitar. Yeah, that would be cool.
Baron Dave Romm is a conceptual
artist and a noble
of Ladonia with a radio
show, a very
weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews
things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music
recommendations from Bartcop-E here.

Hollywood Honors Nancy Reagan
Stem Cell Research
As resident Bush resists mounting pressure to loosen the restrictions he's placed on stem cell research, Hollywood's supporting role in the debate this election year is growing.
Movie mogul money and star power are providing frustrated scientists and patients desperate for cures with additional muscle in an intensifying lobbying campaign against the Bush stem cell policy, which severely limits federal funding for research.
Those groups mingled over steak and shrimp at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Saturday night, raising $2 million for stem cell research at a gala for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The dinner featured a rare public appearance by former First Lady Nancy Reagan, who renewed her call for expansion of the controversial research.
Mrs. Reagan was introduced to the Hollywood crowd by actor Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, a degenerative nerve condition. His Parkinson's disease foundation has contributed $10 million to stem cell research, while the diabetes foundation - another vocal proponent of the research - is raising $20 million.

Celebrities Gather for Theater Opening
Ricardo Montalban Theatre
Celebrities gathered for the opening of the Ricardo Montalban Theatre, owned by a group that advocates greater roles for Hispanics in Hollywood.
The theater is a "dream come true," said the 83-year-old actor, who has long sought a home for Nosotros, the nonprofit theater group he founded in 1970.
The 1,200-seat theater, the largest theater in the country bearing the name of a Hispanic artist, is the latest remodeling of a historic Hollywood building dating to the 1920s. Most recently named the James A. Doolittle Theatre and previously the Huntington Hartford, it is co-owned by Nosotros and a nonprofit foundation.

Launches Food Brand
Smokey Robinson
Smokey Robinson has satisfied his share of musical palates. Now he's whetting appetites of a different sort.
The Motown legend has launched Smokey Robinson's Foods. The company introduced its first product, Soul Is in the Bowl Gumbo, to the Chicago market in February. The gumbo is available there through the Jewel-Osco chain, an Albertson's subsidiary.
Located in the frozen food section, Robinson's gumbo contains chicken sausage and seafood but no red meat. It's low in cholesterol and sodium.
The gumbo hits Southern and Northern California in May through Safeway and Albertson's, respectively. Then it's on to Dallas, where Robinson will open the city's annual Juneteenth Festival. He plans to go national before the end of the year.

Eatery Targeted for Loudness
Jimmy Buffett
City officials say they are going to crack down on loud music at Lulu's, the coastal restaurant owned by singer Jimmy Buffett and his sister, Lucy Buffett.
Jason Newsom, manager of Lulu's, said the restaurant has made compromises to accommodate its neighbors, including limiting outdoor performances to the daytime.
"It's tough, you know, it's 2 p.m.," he said. "We're next to an airport, for goodness sake."

Lawmakers Examine Film Smoking, Copyrights
Hollywood
Hollywood lobbyists will be busy this week as lawmakers examine smoking on film and legislation that could undo some key portions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
The hearings, one in the Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday and one in the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday, make nice legislative bookends for the entertainment industry's current troubles in Washington as one focuses on content and the other on copyright.
The entertainment industry has been under considerable pressure to rein in indecent broadcasts on TV and radio, and now may face the same criticism for depictions of smoking.
For a lot more, Hollywood

Allows for Burials in Alaska
Spring Thaw
As the spring thaw softens ground that has been frozen hard as granite by the long Alaska winter, cemeteries start burying people who died during the past seven months.
Since October, when digging became next to impossible, many of Alaska's dead have been in storage. Now, families are finally able to inter their loved ones in a somber Far North rite of spring.
Even in places with milder climates, such as Anchorage, many cemeteries close in the fall because of freezing ground.
For the rest, Spring Thaw

NBC Wants Smooth Transition
Brian Williams
Every week or so, a handful of NBC News executives meet to plot the schedule of a man who usually isn't in the room. They're planning for an epochal event in the world of television news, when Brian Williams takes over for Tom Brokaw on Dec. 2 as the anchor of NBC's "Nightly News." If only it were as simple as switching a nameplate over a door.
It's been more than 20 years since there's been a change among the Big Three of network news - Brokaw, Peter Jennings and Dan Rather - and NBC is leaving nothing to chance.
NBC announced on May 28, 2002, that Brokaw would step down after this fall's election and be replaced by Williams. In reality, Williams, 45, has been groomed for the job for a decade, since he was hired from WCBS-TV in New York and installed as Brokaw's chief sub. For a while, it seemed "heir apparent" was Williams' new first name.

In Memory
Alan King
Alan King, whose tirades against everyday suburban life grew into a long comedy career in nightclubs and television that he later expanded to Broadway and character roles in movies, died Sunday at the age of 76.
King, who also was host of the New York Friars Club's celebrity roasts, which had recently returned as a staple on television's Comedy Central, died at a Manhattan hospital, said a son, Robert King.
King appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" 93 times beginning in the 1950s.
He played supporting roles in more than 20 films including "Bye Bye Braverman," "I, the Jury," "The Anderson Tapes," "Lovesick," "
Bonfire of the Vanities," "Casino," and "Rush Hour 2." He also produced several films, including "
Memories of Me," "
Wolfen" and "
Cattle Annie and Little Britches," and the 1997 television series "The College of Comedy With Alan King."
He said he was working strip joints and seedy nightclubs in the early 1950s when he had a revelation while watching a performance by another young comedian, Danny Thomas.
"Danny actually talked to his audience," he recalled in a 1991 interview. "And I realized I never talked to my audience. I talked at 'em, around 'em and over 'em, but not to 'em. I felt the response they had for him. I said to myself, 'This guy is doing something, and I better start doing it.'"
King, who until then had been using worn out one-liners, found his new material at home, after his wife persuaded him to forsake his native Manhattan, believing the suburban atmosphere of the Forest Hills sections of Queens would provide a better environment for their children.
Soon he was joking of seeing people moving from the city to the suburbs "in covered wagons, with mink stoles hanging out the back."
His rantings about suburbia, just as America was embracing it, struck a chord with the public and soon he was appearing regularly on the Sullivan show, Garry Moore's variety show and "The Tonight Show."
Bookings poured in, and he toured with Tommy Dorsey's orchestra, played New York's showcase Paramount theater and top nightclubs around the country.
He also worked as the opening act for such music stars as Lena Horne, Billy Eckstine, Patti Page and Judy Garland, who he joined in a command performance in London for Queen Elizabeth.
After that show he was introduced to the queen and, when she asked "How do you do, Mr. King?" he said he replied: "How do you do, Mrs. Queen?"
"She stared at me, and then Prince Philip laughed," he recalled. "Thank God Prince Philip laughed."
King appeared in a handful of films in the late 1950s, including "The Girl He Left Behind," "Miracle in the Rain" and "Hit the Deck," although he didn't care for his roles. "I was always the sergeant from Brooklyn named Kowalski," he once complained.
He also appeared on Broadway in "Guys and Dolls" and "The Impossible Years," and produced the Broadway plays "The Lion in Winter" and "Something Different."
He wrote the humor books "Anyone Who Owns His Own Home Deserves One" (1962) and "Help! I'm a Prisoner in a Chinese Bakery" (1964).
Born Irwin Alan Kniberg, he grew up on Manhattan's Lower East Side and in Brooklyn.
He married Jeannette Sprung in 1947 and they had three children, Robert, Andrew and Elaine Ray. When King was at the height of his career, he faced one son's drug addiction and said he realized he had neglected his family.
He spent more time at home and his son conquered his addiction.
