Baron Dave Romm
General George C. Marshall
By Baron Dave Romm
To quote from the PBS Special:
Gen. George Marshall was the Time Man of the year in 1943 and again in 1947 for completely different jobs.
Before WWII, he was in charge of getting the US Army and Army Air Corps ready for war. From 1939-1945 he was Roosevelt's Army Chief of Staff, where he played a critical role in both the Pacific and European theaters of war, and was involved in every detail of conceiving and executing D-Day. From his Foundation's bio: "He was the most important member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, according to Winston Churchill, the organizer of Allied victory." He retired from military service after the war to accolades like this one from British Chief of the Imperial General Staff Sir Alan Brooke quoted by his Nobel presenter: "As architect and builder of the finest and most powerful Army in American History, your name will be honoured among those of the greatest soldiers of your own or any other country."
But he was still needed and Truman immediately asked him to attempt to mediate a settlement between the Nationalists and Communists in China. In 1947 he was named Secretary of State where he devised the Marshall Plan, which he called "For The Common Defense". The plan was designed to contain Communism and rebuild our allies after the war. This policy was extremely successful in helping our friends and the disparity between the East and the West was what ultimately knocked down the Berlin Wall and led to the fall of the Soviet Union without a major war ever breaking out between the US and Russia. For this spectacular achievement, Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953.
After stepping down in 1949, Marshall was soon named president of the American Red Cross. But he was still needed and Truman appointed him Secretary of Defense in 1951, three months after the outbreak of the Korean War. He held this position for a year, guiding the military in it's containment of the North Korean attack and preventing the spread of war there and around the world.
George Marshall was the ultimate soldier/statesman. Brilliant and successful at both jobs, his accomplishments saved the world... twice. Unparalleled achievements in fighting the Nazis coupled with with unparalleled achievements as an anti-Communist. With the flag-waving and soldier boosting going on now, I was curious as to why his name hadn't been invoked more often. Why isn't he held up higher than contemporaries such as Eisenhower or MacArthur?
The answer seems to be more right wing spin control. That is to say, lies.
One of America's darkest periods was the MacCarthy Era, full of false accusations thatdestroyed reputations and failed rather miserably to actually find many important Communists, and the trials of the ones they did find were witch hunts, eg the Rosenbergs. By concentrating on actors (why? oh yeah, Reagan was head of the Screen Actors Guild...) instead of people who were actually working for the Soviet Union (for example, the most important spy of all: Kim Philby), the House Unamerican Activities Committee played into Stalin's hand, showing wavering countries that the US was on a par with the Soviet Union when it came to running roughshod over the freedom of its citizens. In 1951, Sen. Joseph McCarthy attacked Marshall as the "instrument of a Soviet conspiracy" and "a conspiracy so immense and an infamy so black as to dwarf any previous venture in the history of man." From MacCarthy's June 14, 1951 speech, six years after the biggest military victory in history: "What can be made of this unbroken series of decisions and acts contributing to the strategy of defeat?" That anyone believed anything MacCarthy said is difficult to understand unless the media was dominated by conservatives even back then. That people who knew Marshall didn't rush to his aid is even harder. Eisenhower does nothing to defend his own boss, one of the most cowardly acts in US politics. Indeed, Ike campained for MacCarthy in 1952. Aware of McCarthy's huge base of support and not willing to risk losing votes in a crucial state, Eisenhower delivered his speech minus the defense of Marshall and the condemnation of McCarthy. As a newly minted Republican, he wanted to maintain his "political purity". (To be fair, the same article points out that not all the news media were quite as cowed as Ike. "But various news organizations, including the generally supportive Time magazine, criticized what they called the Eisenhower administration's 'disgraceful episodes of appeasement' of McCarthy and his anti-communist crusade.")
Substitute "George W. Bush" for "McCarthy" in this Alger Hiss comment and it could be said of today: "McCarthy had a knack for manipulating the press - but, to put it mildly, the press willingly took part in the process. They exploited the anxieties and fears of the public, by then easy prey for McCarthy's lurid hobgoblin horror tales."
Indeed, Marshall's own words on his resignation as chief of staff in 1945, after successfully beating the Axis powers could be said today. His Nobel presenter quotes from Marshall's book The Winning of the War in Europe and the Pacific:
George Catlett Marshall stands tall as a leader of the Greatest Generation. His dedication and hard work led to victory in WWII and ultimately to victory over the Soviet Union. Yet he has been set aside because some of the mud from Joseph MacCarthy has stuck and the cowardly conservatives don't care about defeating America's enemies, they only care what hatemongers say. George Marshall should be honored and his words should weigh on leaders today.

Re: The Funk Brothers
Hi Marty,
Ben and I did a a couple shows over there years when Joe Hunter (Funk Brothers) was playing keyboard. I have also met someone of the others, and I got a nice compliment from Pistol Allen on my playing too. Thank goodness Pistol lived long enough to see the movie being made.
I guess I should feel pretty lucky. I am just a white kid that grew up in the 'burbs of Detroit. :)
By the way, Martha Reeves is about the only Motown big shot who has stood by these guys. It's too bad, because this recognition they are getting is long overdue. :)

Anniversary Party In Brooklyn
'Bull Durham'
Snubbed by Cooperstown, "Bull Durham" will get its 15th anniversary celebration in Brooklyn.
Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon — two stars of the popular baseball film — will attend a screening Wednesday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Director Ron Shelton and co-star Robert Wuhl also are expected to attend.
In a statement Thursday, Robbins said Brooklyn was an appropriate place to honor the film.
"From Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges and Sandy Koufax to the Cyclones, Brooklyn's glorious baseball heritage makes it a fitting place for the 'Bull Durham' celebration," Robbins said.
Two days after the screening, Robbins and Sarandon will appear on the HBO program "On The Record With Bob Costas" to discuss the movie and the dispute with the Hall of Fame.

Webby Awards
The Webby Awards, once hailed as the Oscars of the Internet, are being scaled down. This year's bash will be held online.
Nominees apparently expressed concerns about traveling to San Francisco for the planned June ceremony — once a glitzy, celebrity studded extravaganza.
"With our nominees now reflecting a truly global Web we're facing new considerations, especially in light of everything that's going on in the world right now," said Maya Draisin, executive director of The Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which organizes the awards. "This is a challenging time for people in any business at this point."

Selfridge's Department Store
Spencer Tunick
An American artist led 500 naked people through a leading London department store for his latest nudity-inspired live art installation.
At the direction of Spencer Tunick, the volunteers trooped through Selfridge's on London's famous Oxford Street, travelling up and down the escalators and posing at a selection of the store's departments.
The work -- entitled "Be Consumed" -- is the second piece involving mass nudity staged by Tunick in London this month.

Calls Michael Jackon 'Unusual'
Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney thinks his one-time close friend Michael Jackson is an "unusual guy" and wonders about his parenting skills. During a recent interview with the BBC, McCartney said he felt sorry for Jackson's children, "being brought up under those veils." He said his philosophy about raising children was the opposite of the private, sheltered life of Jackson's two children. McCartney said, "I was keen to send my kids to ordinary school and just throw them into the lion's den."
McCartney and Jackson were friends in the 1980s and even recorded two hit duets together in 1983--the Number One song, "Say Say Say" and the Number Two "The Girl Is Mine." When Jackson purchased the publishing rights to a large portion of the Beatles' song catalog, the relationship between the two superstars become strained.

Crosses Morgan Creek
James Taylor Bridge
James Taylor didn't have a guitar or even a microphone when he sang during the weekend, and he was backed up by Gov. Mike Easley and the Chapel Hill High School band.
The song was "The Star-Spangled Banner," and the occasion was a ceremony to unveil a sign naming a bridge in his honor.
The "James Taylor Bridge" sign will soon be posted where U.S. 15-501 South crosses Morgan Creek. The award-winning singer and songwriter spent much of his childhood in Chapel Hill in a home near the creek, and the memories inspired his hit song "Copperline."

Hackers Have A Field Day
Madonna Decoy
It all started when Madonna literally lent her voice to a popular antipiracy technique. Warner Music Group had audio files purporting to be her new songs uploaded onto peer-to-peer file-sharing services. Anyone who downloaded the decoys, however, heard nothing but the pop star swearing at them. But since then, the pithy profanity has taken on a life of its own.
Some observers thought Madonna was smart to fight piracy with its own tools. Others perceived a thrown gauntlet -- hackers soon defaced Madonna's Web site with an equally profane retort along with several downloadable files of the then-unreleased songs. The defacement also carried a marriage proposal to Morgan Webb, an associate producer and on-air presenter at TechTV who had nothing to do with the prank.
A third group saw a creative opportunity. "What the f--- do you think you're doing," Madonna's now-infamous phrase, is turning up in dozens of remixes and the computer-aided musical collages known as cutups or mashups.
Independent music community DMusic is now hosting a competition for the best Madonna-based track, with the first prize being a "boycott-riaa" T-shirt and stickers.

Library to Be Sold
Iris Murdoch
A British bookseller asked by Iris Murdoch's husband to sell the writer's library has called for the collection to be kept together, the Times newspaper reported on Monday.
Author John Bayley, former Wharton Professor of English Literature at Oxford University, is selling the collection of almost 1,000 books -- estimated to be worth 150,000 pounds ($240,000) -- because he does not have enough room in his Oxford house.
"As soon as I started cataloguing it, I knew it had to be kept together," said antiquarian bookseller Rachel Lee, who will try to sell the collection at the Antiquarian Book Fair in London from June 5-8.
Assembled over 60 years, many of the books are covered with Murdoch's scribblings in blue ink or ballpoint pen, with some of the observations in Greek and Latin. The collection also includes makeshift bookmarks of pressed flowers and bus tickets.

Nearing Completion of New Album
The Eagles
The Eagles are nearing completion on their first new studio album since 1979's "The Long Run," which spawned three top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
"They're so close to finishing the record," manager Irving Azoff tells Billboard, adding that the band definitely wants to complete the project before the fall and that a new single, "Hole in the World," may ship during the group's upcoming Farewell 1 tour.
The as-yet-untitled album will be issued on the band's own Eagles Recordings label and may be supported by fall tour dates. As previously reported, the Farewell 1 tour begins May 9 in Richmond, Va. According to Azoff, 33 of 36 shows on the schedule are either sold out or close to it.
The tour will feature the core band as a four-piece consisting of singer/drummer Don Henley, singer/guitarist Glen Frey, guitarist Joe Walsh, and bassist Timothy B. Schmit. The lineup is rounded out by drummer Scott Crago, keyboardist Will Hollis, saxophonist Christian Mostert, and keyboardist Michael Thompson.

Telethon For Iraqis
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia launched a telethon Sunday to raise money for Iraqis affected by the U.S.-led war, the official Saudi Press Agency said.
More than $2.3 million was raised in the first three hours, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef said during a live telephone call with state-run TV.
The telethon, which was called by the oil-rich state's King Fahd, was held as part of Saudi Arabia's commitment to help Muslims all over the world, said Nayef, who also supervises the Saudi Committee for Rescuing the Iraqi People.
Saudi Arabia's official news agency reported later that the prince donated about $533,000 to the Iraqis, while his deputy, Prince Ahmed bin Abdel-Aziz, donated about $266,000.

Plumbers Wanted
Antarctica
The British Antarctic Survey is searching for plumbers to stop its pipes from freezing.
The group which discovered ozone depletion is to hold an open day in Cambridge, England to find 15 skilled workers willing to spend 18 months on its bases and ships near the South Pole, where temperatures can reach minus 50 degrees centigrade.
The BAS is hoping the spectacular Antarctic scenery will compensate for the salary shortfall -- workers will be paid a maximum of 18,888 pounds a year, whereas back home an in-demand plumber could earn up to 80,000 pounds annually.
