To Honor Joe Strummer

Future Forests

An environmental group plans to grow a forest in honor of the late Clash singer-songwriter Joe Strummer's efforts to counter global warming.

Future Forests, a group Strummer helped found in the 1990s, asked fans to donate to help create the living memorial on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

"Joe said, 'Bands must be contributing to global warming by their buses, equipment trucks and the diesel used to power the stages,'" the spokesman said on condition of anonymity. "'Can you imagine how much carbon dioxide the pressing and the distribution of a CD creates? What shall we do about it?'"

That query helped prompt the establishment of Future Forests, and Strummer decided to plant trees to offset the carbon dioxide created by his work.

The spokesman said the forest would eventually be a home to hundreds of wildlife species, including otters, red deer and foxes.

Returns to Poe's Grave

Mystery Visitor

With his face hidden beneath a dark hood, a man crept into a bitterly cold downtown graveyard before dawn on Sunday and raised a solitary birthday toast to Edgar Allan Poe.

Continuing a 54-year tradition, the man, whose identity remains unknown, put his hand on Poe's tombstone, bowed, placed three red roses and a half-empty bottle of Martel cognac on the grave and then silently slipped back into the shadows.

A huge, pale-white moon glowed over the city, yet the man still eluded dozens people who waited in their cars or huddled together on the sidewalk outside the cemetery.

"To me, it's magic," said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum, who spent the night tucked inside a former Presbyterian church nearby with a small group of Poe enthusiasts he invited to watch the ritual. "It would be very easy to step out from our hiding place and expose him, but no one wants to ruin this mystery."

No one, not even Jerome, who has watched the cemetery every Jan. 19 since 1976, knows the identity of the so-called "Poe Toaster." The visit was first documented in 1949, a century after Poe's death. For decades, Jerome says, it was the same frail figure.

Then, in 1993, the original visitor left a cryptic note saying, "The torch will be passed." Another note left later told Jerome that the first man in black, who apparently died in 1998, had passed the tradition on to his sons — Jerome thinks there are either two or three. Such notes are the only communication anyone has had with the visitor.

A combination of respect, the visitor's cunning, and the chill of Baltimore on a January night have kept the curious from uncovering the secret.

A page of sheet music from a song based on the DNA of a human gene called Connexin 26 is seen in this Jan. 15, 2003 handout photo. Dr. Fernando Baquero, Dr. Aurora Sanchez Sousa and French Born composer Richard Krull from the Ramon y Cajal hospital have translated the DNA code into easy-listening music in Madrid, Spain. The team at the Ramon y Cajal hospital have recorded what they call an audio version of the blueprint of life by assigning musical notes to units of DNA's double helix. The end product is Genoma Music, a 10-tune CD due out in February.

2nd Career Knitting?

Emy Coligado

Actress Emy Coligado, who plays Piama on "Malcolm in the Middle," took up knitting between takes, and not only have her scarves been sold in boutiques, they debuted on the TV drama "Crossing Jordan."

"I started knitting scarves and wearing them," Coligado said in a news release. "Now the wardrobe department on 'Crossing Jordan' uses them too."

The Borger, Texas, native also landed a recurring role as Emmy on "Crossing Jordan" in 2001, a year after she moved to Los Angeles.

Still, the Asian-American of Filipino, Chinese and Japanese heritage, isn't letting success go to her head.

"I've been turned down many, many, many, many times," she said. "I've learned it's very important to stay positive, no matter what you're doing."

Fighting 666 Phone Prefix

Kentucky Mountain Bible College

A small Appalachian Bible college is fighting to change its telephone number because the 666 prefix is disturbing to Christians who recognize it as the biblical mark of the beast.

"People say, 'You're a Bible college and you have 666 in your phone number?' " said Carlene Light, an office worker at Kentucky Mountain Bible College. "It's the connotation. No one wants to be part of the mark of the beast."

The conservative, nondenominational Christian college on a hillside in eastern Kentucky has been trying for months to persuade a telephone company to change the number.

Rob Roy MacGregor, the college's vice president for business affairs, said staff and students want the number changed to a second prefix, 693, that recently was added after all the 666 numbers were taken.

"The beast represents Satan, and Satan will put the mark on everybody who does secular trade," MacGregor said. "True Christians will not accept the mark of the beast."

Legendary Hacker Off Probation

Kevin Mitnick

One of the world's most famous computer hackers gets off probation this week and plans to dive back into the Internet, his former playground where breaking-and-entering landed him in jail for five years.

On Tuesday, 39-year-old Kevin Mitnick will log on to the Internet for the first time in eight years, during the live TechTV show "Screen Savers." Also scheduled to be on the program are Shawn Fanning, creator of Internet music downloading pioneer Napster, and Steve Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple Computer Inc.

Mitnick says he is ready to go to work, ironically, in a position where he will be helping protect companies against the kind of hacking he used to do. He has a job interview scheduled for Monday, but declines to name the company.

One of the first computer hackers prosecuted, Mitnick was labeled a "computer terrorist" and became a cause celebre after leading the FBI on a three-year manhunt for breaking into computer networks and stealing software at companies including Sun Microsystems Inc., Novell Inc. and Motorola Inc.

While he will be able to surf the Net and send e-mails, Mitnick will still be barred from making money off his story until 2010, a condition of his release he plans to fight.

Last year he challenged the revocation of his ham radio license and is now able to enjoy a hobby he's had since he was 13. While amateur radio was an innocent activity in high school, phone phreaking -- hacking the phone system -- was getting into gray area, he said.

"That's where I got hooked on exploiting technology for the adventure, the thrill, the intrigue," he said. "I was figuring out how the phone company operated, the internal procedures."

For the rest, Kevin Mitnick
