Rasta Poet Rejects Honor
Benjamin Zephaniah
Rastafarian poet Benjamin Zephaniah has rejected an honor from Queen Elizabeth II, describing it Thursday as a legacy of the "brutality" of British colonialism.
Zephaniah, one of Britain's best-known contemporary poets, announced he was spurning the invitation in an article published in The Guardian newspaper, breaking the convention that those who reject honors do it privately.
The poet, who grew up in England and Jamaica, was recommended for an OBE award, or Officer of the Order of British Empire.
But in a blistering criticism of Prime Minister Tony Blair and the monarchy, he railed against Britain's colonial past and its support of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
Zephaniah said his proposed title reminded him of "thousands of years of brutality, it reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers brutalized."
He added: "Stick it, Mr. Blair and Mrs. Queen, stop going on about empire."
"You can't fool me Mr. Blair. You want to privatize us all; you want to send us to war," Zephaniah said. "You stay silent when we need you to speak for us, preferring us to be the voice of the U.S."
"I may just consider accepting some kind of award for my services on behalf of the millions of people who have stood up against the war in Iraq. It's such hard work — much harder than writing poems," he said.

'I'll Be Home for Christmas' Royalties
St. Lawrence University
Every time I'll Be Home for Christmas is played on the radio, St. Lawrence University hears a little jingle at the cash register.
The song's lyricist, Kim Gannon, stipulated in his will that 30 per cent of the royalties from his songs go to his alma mater (Class of '24) upon the death of his wife. His wife died in 2000. St. Lawrence administrators said they receive about $18,000 US a year in royalty payments. Gannon wrote a number of popular songs before his death in 1974, but university spokeswoman Macreena Doyle said most of the money comes from I'll Be Home for Christmas.
Middlebury College in Vermont also has a share of the royalties, 21 per cent. Gannon attended Middlebury for a year before transferring out.

Proposes To Girlfriend
Tiger Woods
The world's number one golfer Tiger Woods has proposed to his girlfriend, Swedish model Elin Nordegren, at a picturesque South African game reserve, state television reported.
SABC television news said Woods and Nordegren, who have been dating for about two years, got engaged at the luxurious Shamwari game reserve near Port Elizabeth in South Africa's scenic Eastern Cape province.
SABC quoted a game ranger named "Lucky" who was accompanying the couple as saying that Woods had proposed during a spectacular bushveld sunset.

Said Very Ill
Alleged Victim
A comedy club owner who says he introduced Michael Jackson to the cancer-stricken boy he is accused of molesting said Thursday the child is in such poor health that his remaining kidney is failing.
Jamie Masada, owner of The Laugh Factory in West Hollywood, said he brought Jackson and the child together about two years ago — soon after doctors gave the boy three weeks to live. He said the boy expressed an interest in meeting Jackson and Masada made "a few phone calls."
Masada said doctors removed a large tumor from the boy's stomach some time ago, and at the same time took out one of his kidneys and spleen. He said the boy's remaining kidney is failing, and that he needs a transplant.
Masada said he saw the boy earlier this week. He said the boy was being treated at home, not a hospital, but was getting dialysis treatments.

Unearths 'Chavez Ravine'
Ry Cooder
Ry Cooder is eyeing a combined CD/book release for his next project, "Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story," the acclaimed guitarist told Billboard.com.
"It's a story/concept record about Chavez Ravine, our L.A. classic Hispanic Pachuco tale of woe, corruption, politics, the Red Scare, the little and the big, neighborhood vs. corporate, all rolled into one," he said.
Pachuco was a moniker for Mexican-American teenagers who dressed flamboyantly and/or belonged to a neighborhood gang. The music of the same name blended traditional Mexican flavors with R&B and jazz, creating a sound all its own.

Soaring Value Fuels Controversy
Aboriginal Art
Once almost solely the domain of tourists, Australian Aboriginal art has now caught the attention of the international art world -- as well as of opportunists hoping to profit from a growing demand.
The growth in status and value of Aboriginal art in recent years has prompted a new breed of fraudsters to try and capitalize on the popularity of the distinctive paintings that depict stories of one of the world's oldest races.
Mass reproduction of Aboriginal art and a series of high-profile fraud scandals have sparked a campaign by Australia's indigenous community to protect its art, even accusing Britain's Prince Harry of "stealing" Aboriginal concepts.
Australia's key Aboriginal group, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), estimates the surge in popularity has made the indigenous arts industry worth around $143 million annually and it is growing at 10 percent a year.
Australia's 400,000 Aborigines and Torres Strait islanders make up two percent of the 20 million population but remain the most disadvantaged group, dying 20 years younger than other Australians amid high rates of unemployment and alcohol abuse.

15 Minutes Are Way Over
Rick Rockwell
TV bachelor Rick Rockwell says he's taking Penn State, his former alma mater, out of his will because of an article in a campus magazine.
Rockwell, a 1979 Penn State graduate who was the groom on the 2000 Fox reality show "Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?," phoned in to Penn State President Graham Spanier's call-in show, "To the Best of My Knowledge," on Tuesday night.
Rockwell said he wanted to counter the negative portrayal of him in some media reports, and he was especially angry about a story that ran in The Penn Stater, an alumni magazine, that he said "roundly slammed me."
He told Spanier that he had planned to bequeath Penn State $500,000, but was removing the university from his will. Spanier merely thanked Rockwell for being on the show; he later said in an e-mail message that the article was accurate and fair.

Stuck With His German Husband
Thai Man
A Thai man who masqueraded as a woman to wed a German man has failed to get the marriage annulled, and now seems saddled with his husband.
A German court dismissed the Thai's request for an annulment because same-sex marriages are not recognized in Germany, and therefore cannot be reversed.
"I don't know why they got married, whether it was love or the desire for a residence permit," said Ulrich Skwirblies, a spokesman for the court in the western town of Celle.
The 42-year-old Thai married the man in Denmark under a false name in 1994 and was later granted German residency.
