Re: Dean Flashmob

Just wanted to let you know that here in republican country I had a few "die-hards" join me and we had fun! We had many more cars honk (had a sign HONK 4 DEAN) than we ever thought would. Lots of people slowed down to look and smile, gave the thumbs up, and/or waved.

So go out to a busy corner, have fun for a hour or so, and get out the vote!

Our Man in the UK

This from a UK showbiz gossip ezine this week (along with Paul Burrell telling the world about Prince Charles getting blowjobs from his valet ...)

"The Siegfried Clones"
A disturbing Las Vegas conspiracy theory

As Roy Horn lies at death's door in a closely- guarded Los Angeles hospital, Siegfried and Roy fans despair that they'll never see the tiger-loving magicians perform again.

Don't be so sure. A strange rumour is going around that Siegfried died years ago... and been replaced by a plastic-surgery altered stand-in. With $44 million a year coming in from their show, too much was at stake to let one of their deaths stand in the way.

Maybe we'll see an "all-new" Siegfried and Roy show next year. "

Who knows???

Nothing To See Here Folks, Move Along

Hi Marty,

Well The Army Times, Navy Times, and Air Force Times have all taken their Presidential polls off-line. Surely this is a coincidence. I mean its not as if this administration has ever sought to conceal embarrassing facts or anything...

Literary Luminaries Honor

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Effusive praise flowed Wednesday at a tribute to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the 76-year-old Colombian author whose works include "One Hundred Years of Solitude," a novel that remains a milestone of modern literature.

Garcia Marquez, who lives most of the year in Mexico City, did not attend the tribute. Instead, the 1982 recipient of the Nobel prize for literature sent a short statement of thanks, adding darkly that he "can't remember a less appropriate time for celebration" than these "evil times" of war.

But that was the only somber note in an evening otherwise devoted to fond anecdotes or lavish, at times worshipful, praise of the writer known as "Gabo," or sometimes just The Maestro.

The evening began with a videotaped message from former President Clinton, who recalled meeting the author at the home of Rose and William Styron on Martha's Vineyard and rated "One Hundred Years" as "the greatest novel in any language of the last 50 years."

NPR Given Record Donation

Joan Kroc

National Public Radio will announce today the largest donation in its history, a cash bequest from the will of the late philanthropist Joan Kroc of about $200 million.

The bequest from the widow of the founder of the McDonald's fast-food chain both shocked and delighted people at NPR's headquarters in Washington yesterday. It amounts to almost twice NPR's annual operating budget. "No one saw this coming," said one person.

Kroc, 75, died of brain cancer on Oct. 12 in San Diego. She had been a longtime listener of NPR's local affiliate, KPBS, but had no formal association with NPR or history of funding it. People at NPR said yesterday that she had expressed admiration for NPR's coverage of the events leading up to the war in Iraq and its reporting of the war itself.

Joan Beverly Mansfield was born in 1928, the daughter of a railroad man who was often out of work during the Depression. Still, he made sure his daughter received piano lessons, and eventually she became a piano player in a St. Paul restaurant. She met Ray Kroc in 1957 when he was dining, on business, and caught her eye. In his autobiography he called her a "blonde beauty." Though she was 25 years younger, the two fell in love and eventually married. The couple had a daughter, Linda Kliber, who could not be reached for comment yesterday.

She gave more than $90 million to the Salvation Army, the largest donation that organization had ever received, to build a 12-acre community center that opened in June 2002. She also helped build the St. Vincent de Paul Joan Kroc Center for the homeless, a palliative care center, and the Kroc-Copley Animal Shelter, all in or near San Diego. She was also a major benefactor of the Carter Center of Emory University in Atlanta, and in 1987 she gave $1 million to the Democratic National Committee, at the time believed to be the largest single contribution to a political party in U.S. history.

Vows to Work with Cyclists in Apology

Clear Channel

Clear Channel Communications Inc., the nation's largest radio group, has apologized to bicyclists to end a controversy caused by disc jockeys at three of its stations who urged listeners to run cyclists off the road and throw bottles at them.

The apology came in a letter from Clear Channel Radio Chief Executive Hohn Hogan to Elissa Margolin, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists that was released by the organization on Thursday.

In his letter, Hogan said that disciplinary action was taken at all three stations involved in the controversy and that one staff member had been fired. He also said Clear Channel would launch a campaign to promote road safety.

In separate and apparently unrelated incidents, morning disc jockeys at Clear Channel-owned stations in Cleveland, Houston and Raleigh, North Carolina, had urged motorists to harass cyclists.

The broadcasts included suggestions that listeners slam on their brakes in front of cyclists and then open the passenger door or throw soft drink bottles at riders, according to listeners who complained.

MTV Gives Humanitarian Award

Aung San Suu Kyi

The MTV music television channel gave a humanitarian award Thursday to Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi because she "is an inspiration to us all."

Suu Kyi was detained on May 30 -- for her own protection, authorities say -- after a bloody clash between her followers and pro-government supporters while she was traveling near the city of Mandalay, about 1,000 miles north of Yangon.

MTV has been campaigning on air for the Nobel Peace laureate's release and urging its viewers to e-mail the United Nations. It said 63,000 e-mails had been sent to the United Nations as a result of the initiative on the www.mtvburmaaction.com Web Site.

Is It An Interview - Or Paid Advertising?

Paid Segments

U.S. regulators should probe whether a Florida television station violated rules in how it disclosed paid segments aired on one of its local shows, a Federal Communications Commissioner said on Thursday.

In recent weeks, Tampa WFLA-TV, a NBC affiliate owned by Media General Inc., has come under scrutiny for disclosures related to allowing guests to pay $2,500 to tout their products or services on its local morning show "Daytime."

Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican who heads the Senate Commerce Committee that oversees the FCC, said in a letter earlier this week the channel's news logo appeared at the bottom of the screen during the show.

The station earlier this week denied its logo appeared on the show but said it had changed its policy to better identify paid programing on the show by telling viewers immediately before the segment runs that it has received compensation.

FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein on Wednesday mentioned as an additional concern a report about a Mississippi station selling on-air interviews during its news program conducted by news anchors for $500 a segment.

CBS Fills in 'Reagans' Spot

More Reruns

Faced with a four-hour hole in its key November sweeps schedule after yanking "The Reagans," CBS said Thursday it is plugging in series reruns.

On Sunday, Nov. 16, CBS will repeat a two-part episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation from 9-11 p.m. EST. On Tuesday, Nov. 18, reruns of "CSI: Miami" and "Without a Trace" will air.

Sweeps periods, used to set advertising rates, are highly competitive and tend to feature specials or first-run series episodes, often with eye-catching guest stars.

Seeks to Halt Sex Video

Paris Hilton

The homemade video reportedly features Paris Hilton, socialite, reality show star and heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune having sex with Rick Solomon, who went on to marry former "Charmed" actress Shannen Doherty in 2002.

Although Hilton knew the video was being made, her representatives said, leaking the video was "horrendous and in such bad taste."

The recording was made three years ago while Solomon and Hilton, then 19, were dating, Garber said.

Hilton is one of the stars of Fox's new reality series "The Simple Life," set to debut Dec. 2, in which the pampered party girl leaves the urban social scene to live in a rural, working-class environment.

'The Villa at Attersee' Sells For $29 Million

Gustav Klimt

A lush 1917 landscape by Gustav Klimt fetched $29.1 million US at auction.

The sale of The Villa at Attersee on Wednesday night exceeded Sotheby's high estimate of $25 million. The auction house did not identify the buyer or seller. The New York Times reported Thursday the piece was one of three by Klimt that luxury goods maker LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton had bought back from Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg after lending the struggling auction house $62 million to buy them. When Phillips could not sell the paintings, it returned them to LVMH, which consigned The Villa at Attersee to Sotheby's.

Klimt, who died in 1918, was the founder of the Vienna Secession art movement.

Ban Each Other From London Parties

Pink & Christina Aguilera

Pink and Christina Aguilera may have it out for each other. Teenhollywood.com is reporting that the two pop stars recently banned each other from attending their respective London parties. Pink was planning on checking out Aguilera's after-show bash at a London nightclub, until discovering that she wasn't invited to the event. However, she got her own sweet revenge on Aguilera on Tuesday (November 4) night when she told the bouncer at her album promotion party not to let Aguilera in the door.

A source said, "We had been given strict instructions not to let Pink in. We were told she was not on Christina's guest list and she didn't want her gate-crashing." The source added, "There is no love lost between them and this feud has been bubbling along. They fell out badly after a row on the set of 'Lady Marmalade' and haven't spoken since. Pink thought of paying Christina a visit because she's always trying to stir things up. But she realized there might have been an embarrassing situation at the door so decided to turn back at the last minute."

No Longer In Cambodia

Gary Glitter

Disgraced 1970s rock star Gary Glitter, who was convicted on child pornography charges in Britain, has left Cambodia after returning to the country to fight a deportation order.

"We allowed him to come in because of a court summons, but he already left here on October 27," said Chhay Bunna, an immigration police chief at Phnom Penh International Airport.

Glitter returned to Cambodia last month under the summons which was issued after he filed a complaint to the government over his deportation.

The glam rock icon whose real name is Paul Gadd was deported last December, eight months after he was discovered living in a plush Phnom Penh penthouse.

Child rights advocates warn that Cambodia has become a haven for foreign pedophiles due to lax law enforcement, corruption in the courts and the easy availability of young boys and girls who are forced into prostitution by poverty.

Guns To Auction

Robert Stack

Besides his Hollywood career, Robert Stack, the late star of Unsolved Mysteries and The Untouchables had a passion for shooting and golf. Stack was a skeet champion with several world records and was inducted into the National Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame in 1971. His gun collection and other personal items will be up for bids during an auction Sunday and Monday at the Phoenix Club being conducted by Little John's Auction Service, which the actor's estate contacted after his death in May at 84.

"Outside of the shooting community, it is a little known fact that Bob was a shooting champion, held numerous world records in shooting sports and was the National Skeet Shooting runner-up - far before his role as Elliot Ness. Shooting was his first and true passion in life," said publishing magnate Robert Petersen, Stack's longtime friend and shooting partner.

The auction will feature $10 million worth of antique and sporting arms, including collections from Petersen, Barry Goldwater, and Michael Wayne, the son of John Wayne and producer of films including The Green Berets, Big Jake and McQ.

Court Halts Release

'The Definitive Elvis'

A U.S. appeals court brought down the curtain on Thursday on a film documentary about singer Elvis Presley saying it made improper use of copyrighted film, photo and musical material.

The case centered on a video called "The Definitive Elvis" a 16-hour documentary that retailed for $99 after costing Passport Video more than $2 million to make.

Elvis Presley Enterprises, entities that owned the rights to various Presley television appearances and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote the hits "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog," objected to the documentary's use of their material.

The 9th circuit upheld a lower court decision blocking the further distribution of the video.

Says He Didn't Do It, Whatever It Is

Prince Charles

Well, whatever it is, Britain's Prince Charles says he didn't do it.

In perhaps the most bizarre turn yet for the scandal-plagued royal family, the heir to the throne denied on Thursday being involved in an "incident" that has been hinted at -- but never revealed -- in the country's scandal-mad press.

The denial was apparently an attempt to kill off the mystery scandal, but it could just fuel public curiosity as to just what on earth it was that the prince says he did not do.

Until Thursday, the royal family never commented, while speculation and innuendo continued unrelentingly in the media as to just what the story might be.

Explorers Rediscover Incan City

Llactapata

An Anglo-American team of explorers have found an Incan city lost for centuries in the Peruvian jungles despite being within sight of the key religious center at Machu Picchu.

Using infrared aerial photography to penetrate the forest canopy, the team led by Briton Hugh Thomson and American Gary Zeigler located the ruins at Llactapata 50 miles northwest of the ancient Incan capital, Cusco.

The site was first mentioned by explorer Hiram Bingham, the discoverer of Machu Picchu, in 1912. But he was very vague about its location, and the ruins have lain undisturbed ever since.

After locating the city from the air, the expedition used machetes to hack through the jungle to reach it, 9,000 feet up the side of a mountain.
