SAN DIEGO. "License to Chill" glides by a wonderful sight in San Diego harbor. Hundreds of sea lions, basking at leisure, occupy their own private resort, a long dock that is anchored out in the harbor. Respectful pelicans, cormorants and gulls mingle carefully, searching for inconspicuous resting spots.
MICHAEL J. SOCOLOW: The Hyped Panic Over 'War of the Worlds' (chronicle.com)
Frank Stanton sensed trouble. Sitting in his living room on the night of October 30, 1938, the young CBS executive tuned in to catch Orson Welles's adaptation of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds. The program sounded crisp and engaging - but a bit too realistic. Stanton grabbed his coat and headed back to CBS' headquarters on Madison Avenue. Pushing his way through chaotic hallways jammed with reporters, police, and network employees, he reached his desk and telephoned his friend Paul Lazarsfeld. Stanton and the sociologist Lazarsfeld set out to measure the panic as quickly and accurately as possible before it subsided.
Charlie was first, and correct, with:
Never a fan of the show, so I had to check, the answer is:
E Stacy
For some reason though, I remembered something aboutThe Putrid Family
Alan J responded:
E Stacy, it should be Tracy
Marian the Teacher answered:
Stacy
Adam in NoHo responded:
E- Stacy. I haven't seen that show in 20 yrs. Why do I know stuff like
this???
~ Tony In Philly replied:
E: Stacy
Joe S (The problem with the global village is all the global village idiots.
- P. Ginsparg) answered:
E: Stacy, there was Tracy but no Stacy. I had to look up the answer. I have never seen, not even one episode of the Partridge Family, nor do I ever intend to do so.
And, Sally said:
I am not too terribly familiar with the TV sitcom, "The Partridge Family," circa early 1970s. At that time, I was raising a young family and we were more into the, "Sesame Street" type of shows rather than teen musicals.
I have seen reruns of the show appear on TV now and again, but considering that Shirley Jones (and who can forget how enchanting was she in, "Carrousel") is a huge, flaming Right-wing Republican - I just flip the dial over all of her shows, no matter how cute were David Cassidy or Danny Bonaduce! After all of that - I think the answer you are looking for is (E), or "Stacy."
PS: Okay, I'm gonna point out the big Elephant is the room here - yesterday. Marty, how come EVERYONE guessed the correct answer to be, "B" or "3," and you even commented that, "jjw was first, and correct, with: 3 - Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg..." but you flagged the answer as "A" or "2?" Your readers want to know? We are NOT reading the Wall Street Journal - we are loyal BCE fans!! Let's have a lit-tell more transparency here - we want the inside scoop! (Said tongue in cheek of course.) Love ya Marty.
Well, Sally, let's just write it off to trying to do too much in too little time. ; )
Thanks to Charlie and Tony in Philly for the pictures.

Hip-hop artist and political activist will.i.am won't be pulling a Tina Fey any time soon. The high-profile Barack Obama supporter says he's not leaving the U.S.-or the planet-if he's unhappy with the outcome of November's presidential election.
"Whether Obama's president or McCain's president, it's still important for people to be just as passionate and just as involved in moving and shaping their communities," he said last week at the SHIN restaurant grand opening. "I'm going to do that regardless of who is president. You don't just bail the f--k out."
He added, "This political cycle isn't like Christmas. On Nov. 4, it isn't like I got my presents, and now I'm not gonna pay attention anymore."
The Black Eyed Peas main man's celeb-filled pro-Obama music videos, Yes, We Can and We Are the Ones, have incorporated the likes of Ryan Phillippe, John Leguizamo, Jessica Alba, George Lopez, John Legend, Kate Walsh, Taryn Manning, Nicole Scherzinger and Common. According to a spokesperson, Yes, We Can garnered more than a million views on YouTube and 10 million on host site YesWeCanSong.com in its first week

Republican waterbearer Bill O'Reilly has re-upped with Fox News Channel in a multiyear deal that pays him about $10 million a year to host his top-rated news propaganda program, "The O'Reilly Factor."

"Bill O'Reilly is the most prominent and influential name in all of cable news, and his contribution to the network's success cannot be overstated," Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes said, neglecting the $3 million dollar pay-out Mr. Loofah caused fot the network, while snacking on falafel.
A president who can kickstart the U.S. economy may be favored by American voters this election season, but if left to movie fans voting in an online poll, a president who can kick butt would do better in the White House.
Harrison Ford, who played a U.S. president fighting airplane hijackers in 1997's "Air Force One" topped a list of fictional movie presidents people would most like to lead the U.S., according to a poll released on Thursday by AOL's Moviefone.com Web site.
The top 10 movie presidents who Americans would vote into office in real life according to the poll are;
1. Harrison Ford - "Air Force One" (1997)

3. Michael Douglas - "The American President (1995)

A Louisiana man has filed a lawsuit against Oprah Winfrey, claiming she and an attorney made false statements that led the FBI to arrest him on charges that he tried to extort the talk-show host.
Keifer Bonvillain, who had the charges dismissed, seeks damages of $180 million from Winfrey, her attorney and the FBI in the federal lawsuit filed Tuesday.
Bonvillain, of Houma, La., was arrested in December 2006 after he allegedly recorded telephone conversations with an employee of Winfrey's production company and told a company associate he wanted to publish a book based on the recordings. The FBI said he claimed to have offers from publishers and tabloids ranging from $500,000 to $3 million.
The FBI arrested Bonvillain when another company associate agreed to pay him $1.5 million, wired him $3,000 and arranged to meet him. Bonvillain claims in the lawsuit that he did everything he could to avoid doing anything illegal.
New York's top court upheld Bianca Jagger's eviction from a rent-stabilized Manhattan apartment, concluding Thursday that foreigners on tourist visas generally can't claim New York digs as a "primary residence."
The British human rights activist and ex-wife of Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger was evicted in December from the Upper East Side apartment she rented for 20 years. She hasn't lived in the apartment for the past few years because of a dispute over asbestos and fungus contamination that led to a lawsuit against landlord Katz Park Avenue Corp.
"There are still claims for legal fees and unpaid rent and use and occupancy," said attorney Magda Cruz, the landlord's lawyer. She said there's no way of knowing how many New York tenants on tourist visas might be affected by the ruling, since tenants generally don't disclose their visa status when they rent.
Jagger's lawyer, Dan Bryson, said they were disappointed, but that the case against the landlord over water and mold damage should reach trial court next spring.

A federal judge has permanently barred convicted tax rebel and author Irwin Schiff and a co-defendant from preparing tax returns and marketing products advising people that no law requires Americans to pay federal income taxes.
Federal officials said the permanent injunction by Senior U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd George in Las Vegas ensures that Schiff and his former business partner, Cynthia Neun, "cannot promote tax fraud schemes from within prison or when they are released."
Schiff, 80, and Neun, 55, are serving federal prison sentences after a jury in Las Vegas found them guilty in October 2005 of conspiracy, tax evasion and tax fraud.
Schiff was sentenced to 12 years and seven months by U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson, who branded Schiff and his Las Vegas company, Freedom Books, "a flimflam operation" that encouraged others to engage in a fraudulent tax evasion scheme.
The price of Maine lobster, which accounts for 80 percent of the U.S. catch, is tanking.
The primary factor, a drop-off in demand by penny-pinching diners, has been in place since summer. But a secondary problem recently surfaced: the global banking crisis left Canadian processors short on credit, trapping Maine lobstermen and dealers with too much supply.
Even before the credit crisis intensified, lobster purchases by chain restaurants, cruise lines ad other businesses were way below normal this year as consumers reined in spending. A strong harvest only amplified the problem.
Along the Portland waterfront, seafood shops are selling lobsters for as cheap as $3.89 a pound, which is about the price of bologna at the deli counter.
The attorney who brought the Grateful Dead band millions of dollars in revenue during his 35-year stint as their designated "Czar" has succumbed to pancreatic cancer. Hal Kant, who died October 19 in Reno, Nev., was 77.
He is credited with preserving the Dead's enduring legacy and their valuable intellectual property, including ownership of their music masters and publishing rights (a rare feat in the early days of rock 'n' roll).
So domineering was Kant's influence that Jerry Garcia emblazoned the lawyer's Grateful Dead business cards with a simple title: "Czar."
Kant also did work for Janis Joplin, Sonny & Cher, the Association, Stevie Ray Vaughan, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Hot Tuna and Captain Beefheart. He was asked to represent the Doors but turned them down because they asked that he work for them exclusively.
A native of the Bronx, Kant graduated from Harvard University Law School, then got a job as a clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco.
Once in law practice, he noticed that "the only attorneys in the music business were the attorneys for the record companies, and their job was to get as much money as they could for their company and leave as little as possible for the artists," he said. "I decided maybe the other guys should have an attorney, too."
Kant also was an accomplished card player; in 1987, he won the World Series of Poker. Members of the Dead often came to root for him during tournaments.
