Re: West Wing & Law & Order

Thanks for the info. I thought it was my ultra right wing NBC station bowing to the conservatives here. Glad to know I didn't miss anything but upset to think that NBC caved to Bush and Co (I assume it was because of the subject matter). There was no mention of it on the Today Show interview this morning with the Law & Order creator. Funny how they just skipped over that.

Thanks, jh -
I don't count on 'Today' for too much 'information' - besides, I hate 'perky' in the morning.

RE: Wed's West Wing And Thursday Night NBC Line-up

Hey,

The reason NBC blew off new programming on Wednesday was Game 7 of the Marlins-Cubs series. The New York Times is reporting that NBC will be repeating the move on Thursday night because of Game 7 of the Red Sox-Yankees series.

Hope that helps,

Daniel in H-Town

Thanks, Daniel!

Re: NBC's scheduling shuffle

Marty,

As to NBC's Wednesday -- and now Thursday -- switcheroo, I think the answer is simple. Fox has been drawing HUGE numbers with the Cubs and Yanks-Red Sox and the peacock didn't want to get its tail singed and waste new episodes of their hits.

Of course, as astute as you are of the Hollywood scene, you've probably already figured that out.

Tom B

Thanks Tom!
To be honest, this one threw me. Back when I was taking broadcasting classes at CSUN, the number 1 rule was TV's purpose is to SELL and entertainment is only packaging for commercials.
Who'da thunk the first network to place their 'News' department in the 'Entertainment' division would give up so easily.
How sad NBC has so little faith in their schedule.

Re: The Breast Cancer Site

The Breast Cancer Site needs help in October to reach a goal of funding 250 mammograms for women in need.

Simply visit The Breast Cancer Site at www.thebreastcancersite.com every day and click on the pink "Fund Free Mammograms" button to help fund free mammograms for women in need.

It costs you nothing to help. Site sponsors cover the cost of the mammograms. You can click once per day in October (and beyond).

During October, the value of clicks on the button is DOUBLED, meaning your click gives twice the usual amount of funding toward free mammograms.

Re: Jimi Hendrix & military service

Marty

If I recall correctly, Jimi Hendrix served proudly as a member of the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles, "Band of Brothers" fame, etc.), and mentioned it fondly in an interview with Dick Cavett. I believe he injured himself during parachute jump training (either a twisted or broken ankle), which was a fairly common problem for airborne soldiers, and enough to get you discharged from the Army.

He's a really unique American hero - is there any other example of a "counterculture hippy" rockstar with an actual military background (calling Ted Nugent, hello? hello?) ?

Thanks, Josh!

FYI, Jimi did not bail. He was in the 101st Airborne, and he got an honorable medical discharge after shattering his ankle during a training jump.

In The Chaos Household

Last Night

Foggy morning, sunny afternoon.

There was a 'Dean for President' table at the farmer's market, manned by a brave woman. Of course, we chatted. It's the first time I've seen a national candidate represented there.

Talked with dear old Dad. Seems there's a big family wedding in Maryland next month. My cousin Dennis has lived with Maria for over 30 years, and they've finally decided it's time to 'get that piece of paper.' Cousin George from Indiana, a Methodist minister, will perform the ceremony. Being the oldest of the next generation, there's some pressure to attend.

Bails Out Irish Child Abuse Group

U2

Irish rock band U2 has donated 40,000 euros (47,000 dollars) to bail out a cash-strapped support group for victims of sex abuse, a spokesman said.

Colm O'Gorman, founder of "One in Four", said U2 manager Paul McGuinness got in touch after hearing that the suport group would have to shut down because it had failed to secure additional state funding.

"We were staggered when we were contacted this morning by Paul McGuinness to tell us the band and himself were prepared to donate 40,000 euros to keep us running for at least a month as they put it, in an effort to allow the government to get their act together," O'Gorman said.

Woman With An Opinion

Madeleine Albright

US resident George W. Bush's foreign policy "is not good for America, not good for the world," Madeleine Albright, the former US secretary of state under Bill Clinton's presidency, told French radio.

In an interview with the Europe 1 station Albright heavily criticised the actions of the Republican leadership that replaced the Democratic administration she worked for, and notably the "chaos" that reigns in Iraq.

"America is much stronger in a multilateral system, we must be on the same side, work with other people in the world. It shouldn't be America versus the others," Albright said, speaking in French.

"It's difficult to be in France and criticise my government. But I'm doing so because Bush and the people working for him have a foreign policy that is not good for America, not good for the world," she said.

To Play '8 Simple Rules' Grandfather

James Garner

The producers of ABC's "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" have recruited one of television's most enduring stars, James Garner, to help shore up the series after the death of its lead actor, John Ritter, a network source said on Thursday.

Vowing to continue the series despite Ritter's shock death in September, ABC has asked Garner -- the former star of such hit series as "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" -- to step in as father of newly widowed Cate Hennessy (played By Katey Sagal) and grandfather to her teenage children.

The series will return to production next week and plans to return in an hour-long show introducing Garner on Nov. 4. Millions tuned in for the final episodes that Ritter filmed which were shown after his death.

People for the American Way

Ben Affleck

Accepting an award from the liberal People for the American Way Foundation, Ben Affleck didn't use the f-word — as in fiancee — when referring to Jennifer Lopez.

"I only accept it in the hopes that the absurd amounts of publicity that I received lately, that as far as I can tell is chiefly because I have a pretty girlfriend, that's what I did, I am a champion of the American way with a pretty girlfriend — bring it on, paparazzi, news at 11 — in the hopes that some of that publicity might be pointed at something more significant, something more positive, productive and meaningful," Affleck said, according to an Associated Press Television News tape.

The actor made the remarks while accepting a Spirit of Liberty Award Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

Recovers from Liver Transplant

Jack Bruce

Scottish musician Jack Bruce, former bass player and vocalist with short-lived 1960s "supergroup" Cream, is recovering from a near-fatal liver transplant, his label said on Wednesday.

Bruce, 60, underwent the transplant in an English hospital on Sept. 19 after being diagnosed with liver cancer during the summer, Sanctuary Records said in a statement. He almost died after his body rejected the new liver, his kidneys failed and an infection set in.

"After being very critical for a period in which we almost lost him, Jack is now making a successful recovery," said the statement, attributed to Bruce's family.

Bruce is best known for his two-year stint in Cream, the groundbreaking blues-rock trio he formed in 1966 with guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. With lyricist Pete Brown, Bruce co-wrote such hit singles as "I Feel Free" and "White Room."

The fifth annual benefit, called "An Evening with Friends of Brian Wilson," expects to raise about $500,000 for a foundation established in memory of Wilson's late brother and bandmate, Carl, who died of cancer in 1998.

Sir Elton, 56, had been slated to share the bill with Brian Wilson, Sugar Ray, the fledgling band In Bloom (formed by Wilson's nephew Justyn) and two other Wilsons unrelated to the Beach Boys, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.

Hobbit Trilogy Marathon

The Lord of the Rings

Echoing Gollum's covetous cries of "My precious!" fans of "The Lord of the Rings" are competing with one another over the precious few tickets to New Line Cinema's special marathon showing of the "Rings" trilogy, scheduled for Dec. 16.

Rabid fans lined up around blocks and jammed online sites last week to attempt to buy tickets to New Line's "Trilogy Tuesday." To promote the third film in the trilogy, "The Return of the King," which bows nationwide Dec. 17, New Line arranged for marathon public screenings in limited theaters Dec. 16, with showings of the extended versions of director Peter Jackson's "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" to screen before the midnight debut of "King."

Tickets, which went on sale Oct. 9, ranged from $25-$49 each and drew so many fans that online ticketing sites became clogged, forcing theaters to open their box offices to handle the demand for what had been originally designed as an online promotion.

New Line has no plans to expand the promotion, even though that means it won't be able to please the trilogy's entire fan base.

Guitarist Shot Outside Hollywood Club

Bruce Kulick

Former KISS lead guitarist Bruce Kulick was shot in the leg and grazed by a bullet to the head on Thursday outside a popular West Hollywood nightclub when an angry patron started shooting into a crowd of 300 people, Los Angeles sheriff's deputies said.

Kulick, 49, was a short distance from the Rainbow Bar & Grill nightclub on Sunset Boulevard at about 1:20 a.m. PDT when he was hit in the leg and grazed in the head, a sheriff's spokesman said. He was treated at a hospital and released. Another man was shot in the foot, deputies said.

The New York-born Kulick performed with KISS from 1984 to 1995, leaving after the original members donned their black-and-white makeup to embark on a nostalgia tour.

Kulick has since released a solo album and performed with the band Union and 1970s rockers Grand Funk Railroad.

Suing Clintons

Peter Paul

Hollywood producer Peter Paul has sued former President Bill Clinton, and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, contending the former first couple got him in trouble with federal authorities by failing to report his $2 million in-kind contributions to her Senate campaign.

Judicial Watch, which has sued the Clintons several times over alleged campaign finance violations, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Paul, who is in a federal detention facility in New York after being extradited from Brazil last month to face federal fraud charges.

In December 2001, a Los Angeles judge dismissed a similar lawsuit in which Paul sought damages and the return of stocks and cash he had pledged to Hillary Clinton's campaign.

A federal grand jury indicted Paul in 2001 on charges he manipulated the price of stock in his company, Stan Lee Media Inc., before dumping it and bilking investors out of $25 million. If he is convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines.

Studios May Relent

Oscar Screeners

Hollywood's major film studios on Thursday signaled a willingness to ease their strict ban on Oscar screeners that has infuriated independent filmmakers, actors and actresses, industry sources said.

In a teleconference, top officials of the major studios and Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, discussed the outcry from opponents that the ban created an unfair playing field in the Oscar race, and conceded there may be ways to rewrite it, one source said.

"Screeners" is an industry word used to describe videotapes and DVDs of movies mailed each year to voters for Oscars -- the U.S. film industry's top honors -- as well as other award groups and film critics at about this time.

They are used because so many films vie for awards that it is next to impossible to see them all in theaters. Screeners are especially important to low-budget and independent filmmakers who argue they cannot afford to rent theaters to screen their films for voters while the major studios can.

Newest LA Attraction

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Diane Disney Miller can't suppress a chuckle when she reads news reports that her late mother donated more than $50 million to build the new Walt Disney Concert Hall because she loved classical music.

"That isn't true at all, and mother would be the first to scoff at it," says Miller, 69, the only living child of Walt and Lillian Disney. "Her favorite music was Lawrence Welk."

Walt Disney, who died in 1966 at age 65, had the greater appreciation for classical, as evidenced by his 1940 film, "Fantasia," which featured animation set to familiar compositions. Lillian Disney simply wanted an important city landmark to carry her husband's name, Miller said.
