'The Prisoner' / 'The Avengers'
'The Prisoner'
This weeks episode finds #6 enjoying an bit of relaxation. He's playing a game of chess. Actually he's the Queens pawn in a game of lawn chess. As usual #2 is calling the shots. When the rook gets out of hand the game really begins. 6 has decided he needs allies to escape, the episode moves
back and forth on the plot. But as with all such secret agent business, who can you trust and can they trust you? One of the better episodes for the series.
'The Avengers'
This week finds Steed getting ready for a party without Mrs Peel. He's been invited for a weekend retreat. He's going out in fine Gaelic dress. He
gets on board the small plane with the other guests only to find a mystery. There's no pilot. The plane is filled with experts in their fields. The
best markswoman, knifethrower, strong man etc. Once they land they find out they are to be the human bait for a test. The goal is survival. The test is
being conducted by an interesting guest star (he wasn't a star at the time) Donald Southerland. Mrs Peel had her suspicions so Steed was wearing a
tracer. She pops in to invalidate the test. But even with her help can they survive? Tune in and see. This episode is the, IMHO, best of the color episode.

Joins MOB
Edie Falco
"The Sopranos" star Edie Falco asked a group of Kerry supporters Wednesday night to join the mob - Mothers Opposing Bush.
Falco attended a screening at the Tribeca Film Center of a new commercial she narrated for M.O.B., which will premiere Friday on Larry King Live.
"Mothers always put their children first," Falco says in the commercial. "Mr. Bush, can you say the same?"
"There are things going on in the world now, in my name, as an American, that I never in a million years would have approved of, had I known," she said.
Referring to Bush, she added, "If he was my own personal representative, he would be fired."

Acts the Clown for Children
Paul Newman
Hollywood legend Paul Newman had a bucket of spaghetti dumped over his head Thursday as he played the clown for a group of sick and disabled children.
The star made a guest appearance at Zippos Circus to entertain the 300 youngsters, who have all been helped by groups aided by funds from his "Newman's Own" spaghetti sauces and and other products.
Dressed in a green bowler hat, outsize bowtie and giant, yellow clown shoes, the 79-year-old star delighted the crowd with his 10-minute slapstick routine, which also involved sitting in a large cream pie.
The actor started the not-for-profit "Newman's Own" in 1982 and has so far donated more than US$150 million to charities around the world.

Read Constitution Aloud
Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee
Neither of the political conventions is addressing the danger of corporate interests in the political system, actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee say.
"The two parties are now walking lock, stock, hand in glove with corporate power. The same corporation that buys out the house for Republicans, buys out the house for the Democrats, so that the government, however it's structured, tends more and more to serve the interests of the corporation as against the interest of the people," Davis said at a counter-convention event.
"It's certainly not addressed at the conventions. That's one of the great dangers we face in our country, we're arguing about Swift boats, things like that, while the corporations are squeezing us to death and we don't even holler 'Ow!'"
Davis and Dee were part of a staged reading of the Constitution.

Rejects Anti-War Documentary
Warner Bros.
Filmmaker David O. Russell planned to distribute a new anti-war documentary along with an upcoming Warner Bros. DVD release of his 1999 movie "Three Kings." But studio executives now say his finished documentary isn't what they had in mind, so they're giving it back to him.
The move by Warner Bros. is notable in a year when the Walt Disney Co. cited political sensitivity for its refusal to distribute Michael Moore's blockbuster "Fahrenheit 9/11."
The heads of Warner Bros. rejected the documentary this week, The New York Times reported Thursday, saying it was inappropriate to distribute a documentary about the director's personal political views in conjunction with his 5-year-old drama.
The documentary features interviews with Iraqi refugees and veterans of the current war in Iraq.

Mobbed by Unwanted Fans
'Weird Al'
Things got hairy for parody singer "Weird Al" Yankovic as a flock of unwanted fans rushed on stage during his performance at a state fair in southern Illinois.
Green moths swarmed the Grammy-winning recording artist, some nesting in his trademark long, curly locks.
"My band asked me if I could find a concert where we would be attacked by insects," Yankovic told his audience Wednesday at the Du Quoin State Fair. "I said I would see what I could do."

Hospital News
Rodney Dangerfield
More than a week after undergoing heart surgery, comedian Rodney Dangerfield remains hospitalized in intensive care and hooked to a respirator, his publicist said on Thursday.
The 82-year-old comic -- famed for his self-deprecating one-liners and the catch phrase, "I can't get no respect" -- underwent a heart valve replacement at the UCLA Medical Center last Wednesday.
Since the operation, Dangerfield "has been in intensive care, resting in stable condition," spokesman Kevin Sasaki told Reuters. "I would suspect that some time in the next week, doctors will have some kind of a statement."
Sasaki said the comedian also remained on a respirator but he knew of no complications stemming from the surgery.

Split Politically
Baldwins
Politics run deep in the Baldwin family, and right now brothers Alec and Stephen are finding themselves on opposite sides of a fiercely partisan presidential election campaign.
Alec Baldwin, 46, has long been a Democratic Party supporter. Younger brother Stephen is new to the political scene.
The 38-year-old actor, a born-again Christian, says his support for the Republican Party is less about politics and more about religion.
"My desire to be at the RNC was this goal that I have to support the candidate that I believe has the most faith," Stephen told "Access Hollywood" in an interview Tuesday. "Systematically, God is being erased and removed from our culture, our society, our government."

Trash Sold on EBay
Britney Spears
Britney Spears' fans don't think the pop star's chewed gum is "Toxic" - they're buying wads of it on eBay. There are over two dozen auctions of used chewing gum on eBay, each claiming their product has been spit out by the 22-year-old singer. Prices go as high as $14,000, but most are for significantly less.
Though there is no way to verify the authenticity of the various wads, many postings include photos of a small piece of chewed gum, a copy of a ticket stub from the place of finding and a personal story of procurement.
One posting claiming to be the originator of the craze says the gum for sale was spat out in anger by Spears outside her Los Angeles home in early August. A picture of the gum, now going for $26, accompanies the auction.

Probation Revoked
Tom Sizemore
Actor Tom Sizemore's probation in a domestic abuse case involving former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss was revoked Thursday because he failed to complete a drug test.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Antonio Barreto Jr. allowed Sizemore to remain free pending an evidence hearing on Nov. 8. But in the meantime, the judge said, the actor's probation "is in a revoked status."
Authorities still are deciding whether to file charges against Sizemore in connection with his Aug. 11 arrest at his West Hollywood home, where authorities said they seized narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Michael Jackson

Alien Contact?
Space Signal
An unexplained radio signal from deep space could -- just might be -- contact from an alien civilisation, New Scientist magazine has reported.
The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico.
The potentially extraterrestrial signals were picked up through the SETI@home project, which uses programmes running as screensavers on millions of personal computers worldwide to sift through the huge amount of data picked up by the telescope.

Tom Capone
A Brazilian music producer who was a leading nominee at the Latin Grammy awards was killed in a motorcycle crash in Los Angeles early on Thursday, hours after leaving the show, police and his record label said.
(Luis Antonio Ferreira Goncalves)
Tom Capone, who was nominated for five Latin Grammys and produced award-winning albums by Brazilian singer Maria Rita and the rock band Skank, died from massive head trauma after his rented Harley Davidson "Fatboy" and a car collided.
Capone was driving down Ventura Boulevard, a major artery in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Van Nuys, when his gold motorcycle and a Dodge Neon driven by a 23-year-old woman smashed into each other at an intersection, Los Angeles Police Lt. Steven Allen told Reuters.
Capone, whose real name was Luis Antonio Ferreira Goncalves, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened about 3:30 a.m. PT (6:30 a.m. ET) on Thursday.
While little known in the United States, Capone had gained fame in the Latin world and Billboard magazine reported that with his five Grammy nominations he became the most nominated Brazilian ever.
Capone was nominated for album of the year and best engineered album for "Maria Rita" and for producer of the year. He was also nominated twice for record of the year, for Maria Rita's "A Festa" and Skank's "Dois Rios."
He worked with many acts, including Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Raimundos, Barao Vermelho, Nando Reis, Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, and Lenine. Most recently, Capone produced three tracks for Spanish-language trio Bacilos for its new album, due Sept. 28.

David Myers
Cinematographer David Myers of Mill Valley - whose five-decade career included being behind the camera for the directing debut of fellow Marin resident George Lucas - died Thursday at a Mill Valley hospital. He was 90.
A force within the Bay area filmmaking community, Myers shot Alan Rudolph's Welcome to L.A. and Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit, as well as Lucas' first feature, THX 1138, which will be re-released in theaters next month, allowing audiences a widescreen view of Myers' artistry.
Besides the feature films on his resume, Myers also shot numerous music documentaries, including Woodstock, Elvis on Tour, The Grateful Dead Movie and The Last Waltz, directed by another fledgling filmmaker named Martin Scorsese.
Myers began his career as a still photographer. In an interview with the Chronicle last year, Myers recalled taking a picture of President Lyndon Johnson signing the landmark civil rights legislation he had spearheaded.
"I had to squat down to keep shooting," Myers said. "I sat on something soft and warm, and what do you know - it was Lady Bird."
As for his spell as a rock and roll cinematographer, he was much more impressed by Jimi Hendrix's performance than Presley's. Myers recalled that Presley was "so drugged" by 1972, when the concert tour was filmed, that performing "was sort of an old trick for him."
