"There I was last Sunday morning watching "Meet the Press" in the com pany of one of the most
brilliant men I know and we were both astounded at what transpired on the box. The usual
suspects had all been rounded up and the subject matter was routine — WMD; where were they?
Israel and Palestine; can they? "Etc, etc." as the King of Siam would have said.
But suddenly they were showing clips of Bill Clinton talking about reversing the 22nd Amendment
on presidential term limits. "What is he up to?" the pundits on air asked one another. Then the
matter of Clinton running for mayor of NYC came up — again. (I thought this had been laid to
rest months ago!) But no, the "Meet the Press" guys were talking seriously.
So let's examine this briefly. Could Clinton win the Democratic slot for mayor of the greatest
city in the world? Of course, he could — in a walk. Would he make a great mayor administrator?
Well, probably. One thing is for sure, he would have a forum and he'd be back in the national
eye and maybe even New York and its problems would be enough to keep him busy. (He's only 56,
for heaven's sake!)

Re: Janeane Garofalo
Is the ghost of Sen. Joe McCarthy alive and well in Hollywood? That is
certainly on the minds of many outspoken liberals in Tinsel-town these
days. The latest conspiracy theory focuses on the just-announced axing
by ABC of very vocal anti-Iraq war activist Janeane Garofalo's new
sitcom, ''Slice o' Life.''
Though the alphabet network had given Garofalo and Universal
Tele-vision a thumbs up on the show for next season, network execs
changed their minds, telling Daily Variety and other industry outlets it
was ''the direction of the series story line'' that led to the dumping
of ''Slice''--just days before the show's pilot was scheduled to be
taped in Vancouver, British Columbia.
A source close to Garofalo says the actress and comedian
was furious by the last-minute change and believes it's yet another
example ''of a network bowing to the perceived power of the Bush
administration. ... Janeane is convinced her politics and all the hate
mail the right-wing lobby stirred up during the war is what is behind
all this.''
This is Garofalo's second recent TV stumble. A potential HBO project was
also shelved.

Re: Martha Stewart
Hey Marty,
If you have any illusions as to why Martha Stewart is being so aggressively
indicted for what seems to be a small potatoes illegal trade, as opposed to
the hugely criminal YET TO BE INDICTED Ken Lay and other Enron Republican
scum, read this:
Pisser #1
Pisser #2
I am not defending Martha Stewart in this matter as a jury will decide her
guilt or innocence, but I strongly believe that if Martha had been in Bush's
inner circle like Kenny Boy, her case would have quietly put in the freezer
until doomsday.
I am sure that our resident told Ashcroft to go after her because of her
strong support to Democrats in the 90's. It is no accident that Bush's
contributors have gotten off relatively scott free so far and Clinton's have
been indicted for far lesser abuse of power.
Denise
Thanks, Denise.
That's kind of what I was getting at - for Koresh sake, Janeane, Natalie & Martha are being vilified on a near daily basis, careers hanging in the balance, but, compared to what the alpha
'Y' chromosomers have gotten away with, well, hell, it's like comparing a pedicure to brain surgery.
Yet, the media drums keep beating a subtext of 'when will those damn women learn their place & keep it?' while loudly tub-thumping 'fair & equal'.
Seems the bottom line is if I want 'fair' I have to go to Pomona in September, and if I want 'equal', I need to use the crap in the pink envelopes at Denny's.

Hosting Tony Awards Sunday
Hugh Jackman
It wasn't difficult to get Hugh Jackman to host this Sunday's Tony Awards. He said they asked him and he said "Yeah, no problem."
He said he wouldn't go so far as to call himself a stand-up comedian. But, he's been talking with the show's writers about material and they'll be giving him ideas. But, he says "you have to make it your own in some way, give it your own flavor."
Jackman, who has a theater background, will also star in a new musical about Liza Minnelli's ex-husband Peter Allen "The Boy From Oz" this October.
Considering how flamboyant Allen was and the wild costumes he wore, Jackman hopes Wolverine fans aren't shocked to see the show. He joked that he has nightmares about Wolverine fans standing up in the audience and shouting "don't kiss that guy!"

Media Blitz Book Spoiled by Leak
Hillary Rodham Clinton
The publisher of Hillary Rodham Clinton's memoir wanted people guessing about her revelations before publication, but those plans were spoiled on Wednesday as some of the book's most colorful details were splashed around the U.S. media.
Simon & Schuster paid $8 million for Clinton's inside look at eight tumultuous White House years and planned a media blitz for its release Monday. It gave no advance media copies.
But late Tuesday, those plans went awry when The Associated Press ran a story that quoted "Living History" extensively, winning play across the country.
The leak of the book sparked a potential legal battle.
Sources close to the situation said Simon & Schuster was planning to seek damages from The Associated Press for copyright infringement.

Mocks Bush at Harvard
Will Ferrell
Just because Will Ferrell has left "Saturday Night Live," it doesn't mean he's left his resident Bush impression behind. He brought it out yesterday for what's called "Class Day" at Harvard University. It's the day before the actual graduation.
Ferrell was dressed in a sailor's cap, navy jacket and kerchief. He put on his best George W. Bush as he pretended to read a letter from the resident to the students.
In it, he said: "One of the challenges you will face is finding a job in our depressed economy." "In fact," said Ferrell, "the chances of finding a job are about as good as finding weapons of mass destruction in the Iraqi desert — slim and none, and slim just left the building."

Men Threw Underwear at Munich Concert
Mick Jagger
Mick Jagger, staring 60 in the face, lamented the lack of women's lingerie thrown on stage at a Rolling Stones concert in Germany -- but said a few pairs of men's underpants were hurled from the crowd.
Jagger, 59, said on Thursday there seemed to be fewer women in the crowd at the start of the European leg of the Rolling Stones "40 Licks" tour in Munich's Olympia Hall on Wednesday.
"It was all men," Jagger said at a news conference, noting a lamentable absence of the lingerie that is normally thrown at the band from the audience. However, he said he did see a few pairs of large men's underpants on the stage.
"I don't know what that says," Jagger said, laughing. "They left all the girls at home or whatever, I don't know. Usually we get a few bits of underwear on the stage. Last night there were a few Y-fronts."

Mom Gives Interview
Luther Vandross
In the days before he suffered a stroke, Luther Vandross couldn't stop overeating, according to his mother.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Mary Vandross also blamed her son's hectic schedule for his April 16 stroke.
A few days before his stroke, Vandross, 52, visited his mother in her Philadelphia home. Although the visit was a good one, she worried about him because he was "eating everything in sight."
"I asked him, `Are you upset about something?' He said, `I don't know, but ... when you go to your mama's house, you're supposed to eat,'" she said.
She visits him in the hospital often. If she is not there, another relative or friend is by his bedside.
"He's doing excellent now in comparison to what he was," said Mrs. Vandross.

Pledges Funds to Fight AIDS
Carlos Santana
Rock guitarist Carlos Santana on Thursday pledged the proceeds of his summer tour -- estimated at up to $3 million -- to battling AIDS as South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu predicted the disease may prove more devastating to his country than the scourge of apartheid.
Proceeds of the 2003 U.S. Shaman Tour, consisting of 23 concert shows, will go to the Artists for A New South Africa, a group formed in the late 1980s to support the economic sanctions aimed at toppling South Africa's then white-ruled apartheid regime.
Representatives of the group, including actress Alfre Woodard and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Tutu, joined Santana in announcing the pledge on Thursday.
Currently, there are over 42 million people living with either HIV or AIDS worldwide, including 29 million in sub-Saharan Africa.

Jamie Foxx
Jamie Foxx is trying to get a little more time before he has to deal with his case in New Orleans. The lawyer for the actor has asked the judge for a continuance of the case and the judge may rule on that request today.
Foxx is free on $1,900 bond. He was arrested in April on charges of trespassing, disturbing the peace, battery on police officers and resisting arrest. Authorities say he fought with police after Foxx and his entourage refused to leave a casino near the French Quarter. The beef started when Foxx, his sister and their group were asked to show identification before going into the casino.
Foxx was in New Orleans to film the movie "Unchain My Heart." He stars as Ray Charles in the film.

Bangladeshi villager Mohammad Ismail shows his palms affected by arsenic contamination in Sonargaon near the capital Dhaka, on June 3, 2003. Doctors removed Ismail's two badly arsenic-affected fingers to save his right hand three years ago. One of the biggest problems in Bangladesh is arsenic contamination, which has forced authorities to seal thousands of wells across the country. Health officials say one-third of the country now had arsenic contamination in wells, while rivers -- many drying or polluted by chemical waste -- were no longer a source of safe drinking water.

L.A. Police Want Interview Too
Phil Spector
Legendary rock producer Phil Spector has told Esquire Magazine that actress Lana Clarkson killed herself in his Los Angeles mansion by putting a gun in her mouth and blowing her head off -- details about the death he apparently hasn't shared with police.
Spector touched off an uproar on Wednesday with his interview about the death that led to his arrest on suspicion of murder because police say he hasn't granted them an interview since Feb. 3., the day the 40-year-old B-movie star died.
A source close to the case characterized the Esquire interview and a previous e-mail circulated by a Spector associate that claimed the producer would not be charged as part of "a calculated campaign" to pressure officials not to prosecute him.
Meanwhile, Lt. Dan Rosenberg of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told Reuters that detectives were just as eager as Esquire's editors to land an interview with the reclusive record producer.
No charges have been brought against Spector and Rosenberg said investigators were waiting for evidence to be analyzed by the county's crime lab.

Actors Union Merger
Nearing a referendum on the proposed merger of the Screen Actors Guild with its sister union, AFTRA, foes of the plan staged a rally on Wednesday to counter the ongoing informational campaign of those favoring consolidation.
Hoisting signs with such slogans as "Merger: Same Pig Different Lipstick" and "This Merger Stinks!," about 100 protesters from the SaveSAG opposition group walked a picket line outside SAG headquarters, calling on fellow members to vote no in the upcoming referendum.
The merger plan would create a new umbrella union, called the Alliance of International Media Artists, consisting of three largely autonomous branches representing actors, broadcast talent and recording artists.
"This is a bad deal, and we are here to reflect that and tell you about that," said SAG recording-secretary Elliott Gould, who led off a string of speakers, including board member Frances Fisher, treasurer Kent McCord, former president William Daniels and organizer Mark Carlton.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger, long mentioned as a potential Republican candidate for governor, told Esquire magazine for its July issue: "Yes, I would love to be governor of California. ... If the state needs me, and if there's no one I think is better, then I will run."
Schwarzenegger is on the cover of the magazine that hits newsstands June 13. A cover line reads: "The Next Governor of California. Really."
But Schwarzenegger's political adviser, George Gorton, said the statement didn't represent a change in the Austrian-born actor's thinking.
He said the 55-year-old actor will decide whether to run after the July 2 opening of "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," and only if it becomes clear the recall will qualify for the ballot. Supporters must collect nearly 900,000 valid signatures to make that happen.

Marks 35th Anniversary
Los Angeles
The city of Los Angeles marked the 35th anniversary of the assassination of US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy with a sombre ceremony at the hospital where he died.
Kennedy was gunned down in the kitchen of the city's Ambassador Hotel on June 5, 1968 just after winning the California Democratic primary election and becoming the frontrunner for his party's presidential nomination.
"This hospital was an unintentional witness to a dark and sad day in American history," said the president of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Andrew Leeka at the ceremony held in a small, spartan chapel.
Kennedy, the 42-year-old brother of slain US president John F. Kennedy, was shot three times as he attempted to leave the now-shuttered hotel through a back door after making a victory speech.

Natalya Reshetovskaya
Natalya Reshetovskaya, an author and the first wife of Nobel literature laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, has died at age 84.
Reshetovskaya died in her sleep on May 28, the newspaper Izvestia reported on its Web site. The cause of death was not stated.
Her death came just days before the planned release of her sixth book, "APN — Me — Solzhenitsyn (My lifetime rehabilitation)." Aside from her work as an author, she was head for 30 years of the chemistry faculty at an agricultural institute in the city of Ryazan.
Reshetovskaya and Solzhenitsyn were married in 1940. Five years later he was arrested by the Soviets and sentenced to imprisonment in a labor camp, the start of the torments he described and analyzed in novels beginning with 1962's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich."
In 1951, Reshetovskaya separated from Solzhenitsyn and later married another man. She remarried Solzhenitsyn in 1957 after his release.
Solzhenitsyn's work attracted extraordinary attention, and he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970. The pressure from abroad and at home frayed the marriage, and the couple finally parted in 1973. Solzhenitsyn married another woman.
Reshetovskaya published several volumes of memoirs, including a 1975 book, issued in the United States as "Sanya — My Life With Alexander Solzhenistyn."
In a 2002 interview with the newspaper Argumenti i Fakti, Reshetovskaya said: "It's possible that it may seem strange and even improper to someone, but, alas, I love him right up to this moment. And the thought never leaves me — will I really never see him again?"
She was to be buried in Ryazan.
