Saturday, May 29th, 2004Rock for Regime Change
Marty,
My name is Chris, the saxophone player for a band called Code.
We're like a cross between the Dave Mathew's Band and The Barenaked
Ladies with a little bit of Rush.
We've put together a really great
musical event called Rock for Regime Change.
There's going to be six
bands and two DJs, with hopefully 500 people coming. Tokyo is a hard
place to promote things like this, but I think the folks at Democrats
Abroad should be able to pull in a crowd.
There's going to be great
food and wicked awesome beer from Baird Beer (Shizuoka) for all the
partiers because it's going to be from 5:00 until 11:00.
I tell ya, you
gotta eat something when your sweating to bands that play music you
wanna dance to - especially if it means the pre-celebration of Kerry's
Presidential victory.

Has Berg Footage
Michael Moore
Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose incendiary new documentary lambastes resident Bush's handling of the war, said Thursday that he has footage unused in the film of Nicholas Berg, the American civilian later beheaded in Iraq.
The footage, of an interview with Berg, "is approximately 20 minutes long. We are not releasing it to the media," Moore said in a statement. "It is not in the film. We are dealing privately with the family."
Neither Moore nor his representatives would describe the nature or contents of the interview with Berg, who held staunch pro-war views.

Hollywood Mystery Man
'Rance'
He skewers Hollywood and the cult of celebrity on an anonymous Web log that has spawned a cult following. He claims to be an A-list actor, writing under a pseudonym, but admits he may not be believed.
Who, exactly, is "Rance?"
Could he really be, as some believe, Owen Wilson, Ben Affleck, Jim Carrey or even George Clooney?
In the blog's first-ever post last December, Rance introduced himself this way: "Suffice it to say I know what its like to see your picture on the magazine rack every now and again when you pay for groceries."
Rance's blog has since spawned a furious guessing game on the Internet and beyond, becoming a regular topic at Hollywood parties.

Helped Complete Habitat Project
blink-182
The trio blink-182 went from punk rock to house painting when they helped complete a Habitat for Humanity project.
While drummer Travis Barker sat in a folding chair eating a burrito - he's on crutches and wearing a cast after foot surgery - guitarist Tom DeLonge and bassist Mark Hoppus applied white paint to the home on 13th Street in Harrisburg (PA).
The band's volunteer work Wednesday was part of Raise The Roof, a partnership between Clear Channel Entertainment and Habitat for Humanity, which provides homes for people in need using volunteers. The band, which spent about 40 minutes at the Habitat site, played a show at the Star Pavilion in nearby Hershey on Wednesday night.

Bails on Danish July 4 Party
Viggo Mortensen
A slow letter left the organizers of this year's Danish celebration of U.S Independence Day with a little explaining to do.
Viggo Mortensen, who played the world-weary Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, won't be the main speaker at this year's festivities after all, the organizers the annual celebration said Thursday. "Viggo Mortensen sent us a letter saying he could not attend, which unfortunately the Rebild Society didn't receive in time," said Lars Hoegh Hansen, secretary general of the association that has organized the annual Rebild festival since 1912.
Danes and descendants of emigrants have celebrated the U.S. Independence Day with barbecues, square dancing and country music outside Rebild, a village 250 kilometres northwest of Copenhagen, since 1912.

First Entertainment Channel Goes on Air
Afghan TV
Afghanistan has its first entertainment television channel, three years after the fall of the radical Taliban regime that banned the medium.
Using a mobile antenna positioned on a hill overlooking the capital, the broadcast range of "Afghan TV" station only covers Kabul city, but its owner, Ahmad Shah Afghanzai, hopes to widen its range across the country in a year's time.
The fledgling station airs mostly Indian and Western songs as well as films for nearly sixteen hours each day.

Brothers Gibb
Barry and Robin Gibb, who went to Buckingham Palace to be honored Thursday, said the Bee Gees died with their brother, Maurice.
During an emotional ceremony, Prince Charles made the brothers Commanders of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE. Maurice's son, Adam, received the award on his father's behalf.
Born on the Isle of Man, the Gibb brothers moved to Manchester in the 1950s. Their '70s disco hits included "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever."

Files for Quickie Divorce
Marc Anthony
Marc Anthony was in the Dominican capital Thursday to file for divorce from former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.
The divorce papers, signed by both, were submitted at a civil court in Santo Domingo. Judge Maritza Capellan has three days to issue a decision. The hearing Thursday was behind closed doors.
Torres filed a petition for dissolution of marriage with children on Jan. 20 in Miami-Dade Circuit Court under Dayanara Torres Muniz. Anthony's real name is Marco Antonio Muniz.
It wasn't clear how the Dominican petition would affect the one in Florida, but divorce proceedings in the Dominican Republic are generally quicker.

Large Donation
Phoenix Art Museum
A $3 million gift from the heirs to the Campbell Soup fortune is the single largest donation ever to the Phoenix Art Museum, officials said.
The gift from the Dorrance Family Foundation, announced by the museum Tuesday, includes $2 million for the design and construction of a secured outdoor sculpture court.
It also includes a $1 million endowment for education in the form of a matching challenge gift. The foundation said it will match every $100,000 in endowment funds raised by the museum up to $1 million.

Vance "Pinto" Colvig Or Larry Harmon
Bozo the Clown
There are no hand buzzers, trick flowers or balloon animals in this clown story. The issue is who created Bozo the Clown - and the dispute is wiping the smile off some clowns' faces.
For years, promoter and entertainer Larry Harmon claimed to have both created the character and said he was the original.
Now the International Clown Hall of Fame in downtown Milwaukee is formally endorsing a different version: Capitol Records executive Alan Livingston created Bozo for recordings in 1946, and the late Vance "Pinto" Colvig was the first person to play the clown.
On Friday, the hall is posthumously inducting Colvig as the first Bozo.
