The star of the Comedy Central mock newscast has re-upped for four more years, the cable channel announced Thursday.
Besides hosting "The Daily Show," Stewart serves as an executive producer and writer. His contract had been set to expire at the end of this year.

South by Southwest Festival
Little Richard
Music legend Little Richard put his larger than life personality on display for all to see Thursday during a keynote address at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Interviewer Dave Marsh could scarcely get a word in edgewise with the artist, who was scheduled to perform later at the Austin Music Hall.
Rambling from story to story and frequently speaking in rhyme, Richard described his experiences with other rock legends in their formative days. Of Jimi Hendrix, who played in Richard's band before striking out as a solo act, he said, "Jimi was a ladies man. If he saw a lady, he'd forget everything else. When he was with me, he didn't play that kind of guitar. He played Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson and the blues. My brother fired him without my permission."
He recalled turning down an opportunity to sign off on the Beatles' cover of "Good Golly Miss Molly," which the group wanted him to shop around to U.S. record labels. "I didn't bring the tape," he said. "Now, I wish I did because they offered me 50% of the royalties!"
On sharing the stage with rising star James Brown: "He came to Macon, with a group called the Flames. They weren't famous but they called themselves the Famous Flames. So I let them come onstage and they sang 'Please Please.' When got through begging for an hour, I had to wait an hour to get my mic back!"

Arrested on Assault Charge
Courtney Love
A few hours after a loopy "Late Show" appearance in which she lifted her shirt to expose her breasts at least six times, rocker Courtney Love was arrested early Thursday for allegedly throwing a microphone stand and striking a man in the head.
The 24-year-old man was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said. Police said they were charging Love with reckless endangerment and third-degree assault after the 2:30 a.m. incident at a posh Manhattan nightclub.

Writers Guild President Resigns Under Fire
Charles Holland
Writers Guild of America West president Charles Holland, whose brief tenure was marked by doubts about his military and academic background, resigned Thursday, the second time this year the union has lost its chief.
Holland, who said he wanted to spare the guild from distractions as it heads into crucial contract negotiations with the studios, will be succeeded by current vp Daniel Petrie Jr., whose credits include the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise.
Holland's credibility had been widely questioned because of media reports challenging his claims to have served in the Army Special Forces and play football on a scholarship at the University of Illinois.

In Blender Magazine's 50 Craziest
Whitney Houston
The people at Blender magazine are out with what they call their list of the top 50 craziest celebrities. And Whitney Houston is number four on the list.
The magazine argues that Houston's erratic behavior "makes Bobby Brown look like the sane one" in their relationship. The magazine claims Houston got kicked off the 2000 Academy Awards ceremony for playing on an imaginary piano during rehearsals. The article also hits her for her statement in a television interview that she makes too much money to ever smoke crack.
Meanwhile, it's easy to guess who is the craziest music star on their list — Michael Jackson.

Prosecutor Seeks Nine-Year Jail Term
Bertrand Cantat
Lithuanian prosecutors called for a nine-year jail sentence for French singer Bertrand Cantat, accused of murdering his actress lover Marie Trintignant, who died after the two had a violent row.
Prosecutor Vladimiras Serguejevas said the 40-year-old Cantat was "fully aware of his actions, and he could not have been unaware of the gravity of the situation."
French medical experts said she had been struck in the face and repeatedly shaken, which left her in a coma, but Cantat has said he only slapped her with his palm or the back of his hand, and that she later fell and hit her head.
In closing statements, Cantat's attorneys changed their strategy, abandoning the defense that he committed a "crime of passion" and asking the court to instead reclassify the case as reckless manslaughter, rather than murder.
The hearings were set to resume on Monday with a final statement from Cantat. The court could then immediately render its decision or, more likely, choose to deliberate before ruling.

Confesses Political Ambitions
Dwayne Johnson
Could there be another President Johnson in the White House one day? The Rock isn't ruling out that possibility.
The action star and former professional wrestler, whose real name is Dwayne Johnson, spoke at both the Democratic and Republican conventions in 2000 to encourage people to register to vote.
When asked whether he'd like to enter politics himself, he said: "Possibly, you never know. Maybe one day. Absolutely. . . I talked to Arnold (Schwarzenegger) about that, too.

Apologizes for Racist Remark on Stern Show
Mel Karmazin
Viacom Inc. President Mel Karmazin has apologized for a racist comment phoned in to shock jock Howard Stern's radio show but said the remark did not violate federal indecency regulations.
"I apologize that such an offensive racist term was broadcast on one of our radio stations," he said in a March 12 letter to Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican who complained about the show.
Stern, whose show is syndicated by Viacom's Infinity Broadcasting unit, last month had an on air interview with Rick Salomon, who had been filmed having sex with hotel heiress Paris Hilton.
Stern and Salomon discussed sex acts and at one point a caller used an racist slur in a question.

FTC Shuts Phone Scam
'American Idol'
Federal regulators settled a case Thursday with companies that took advantage of thousands of "American Idol" fans trying to vote for their favorite contestants on the TV show.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, three Utah-based companies bought dozens of phone numbers very similar to the toll-free numbers that "Idol" fans call to place their votes. Viewers who misdialed and got one of the numbers were directed to dial a 900-number to place their vote. A message on the 900-number then gave the correct toll-free number to call.
The FTC said about 25,000 consumers were charged up to $3 per call during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
The three companies have agreed to pay a civil penalty of $40,000 for engaging in deceptive conduct and violating federal law, the commission said.

Cites Stern, Bono for Indecency
FCC
Federal regulators opened a new front in their crackdown on offensive broadcasts Thursday, saying that almost any use of the F-word on over-the-air radio and television would be considered indecent.
The Federal Communications Commission overruled its staff and said an expletive uttered by rock singer Bono on NBC was both indecent and profane. It marked the first time that the FCC cited a four-letter word as profane; the commission previously equated profanity with language challenging God's divinity.
The FCC on Thursday also proposed maximum fines for the broadcast of the Howard Stern radio show and for a program on two Florida radio stations owned by a Clear Channel Communications subsidiary.
Commissioners said they did not propose a fine for Bono's expletive during the 2003 Golden Globe Awards because they had never before said that virtually any use of the F-word violated its rules. The FCC specifically rejected earlier findings that occasional use of the F-word was acceptable.

Seeks to Trademark 'You're Fired!'
Donald Trump
The U.S. fast food firm Wendy's asked diners "Where's the beef?," and Nike commanded sports nuts to "Just do it." Now Donald Trump is seeking to trademark another pithy phrase: "You're fired!"
The real-estate mogul and reality TV star has filed a trademark application for the phrase, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site.
Trump said he intended to emblazon "You're Fired" on games and casino services, and "You're Fired! Donald J. Trump" on clothing.
Other tyrannical bosses won't have to alter their vocabulary if the application wins approval, a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office official said, as it will only protect those specific uses.

Believed Dead
Dominick Arduin
Helicopters failed to find Finnish-French adventurer Dominick Arduin who went missing nearly two weeks ago during a solo trek to the North Pole, and rescuers said they believed she was probably dead.
The two helicopters, which are operating out of northern Russia, would on Friday return to the area where Arduin was presumed to be for a final sweep.
The hunt is a last-ditch effort to find Arduin by scanning the ice with a heat-detecting infrared camera, which is able to pick up body heat over a large distance, even if a person is covered by snow.
However, if a body has been dead for some time it would be frozen and have the same temperature as its surroundings, thereby making it difficult for the camera to detect it.

Like Monty Python
Spam, Spam, Spam
Spamburgers, Spam nuggets, Spam Spaghetti, Caesar salad with Spam, Spam and eggs: the menu at the Spamjam restaurant in Manila could be straight out of the Monty Python sketch.
Filipinos eat 2.75 million pounds (1.25 million kg) of the stuff every year, and woe betide anyone arriving from the United States who doesn't bring a few cans for their relatives.
Hormel, whose Philippine venture helped Philip Abadilla set up Spamjam, is hoping to take the restaurant to other countries.
For people who don't like Spam, such as the female customer played by Graham Chapman in the sketch, the menu also offers hot dogs.

John 'J.J.' Jackson
John 'J.J.' Jackson, who in the 1980s helped usher in the music video era as one of the first MTV on-air personalities, has died. He was 62.
Jackson, a longtime radio station disc jockey, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday while driving home from dinner in Los Angeles, friends and radio industry colleagues said Thursday.
In a statement, MTV said Jackson's love of music and good humor helped set the tone for the cable music network in its formative years.
Jackson's career in broadcasting began in radio. He first gained prominence while working at WBCN in Boston in the late 1960s, then moved in 1971 to Los Angeles where he took on the afternoon radio slot at KLOS.
In the late '70s, he worked as a music reporter for KABC-TV, then it was off to New York and MTV, where his musical knowledge, hewn over years in radio, helped ease his transition to a new format for music.
After five years at MTV, Jackson returned to radio in Los Angeles, including a stint hosting a nationally syndicated show on the Westwood One Radio Network. Most recently, he was hosting an afternoon slot at Los Angeles' KTWV.
Jackson had been divorced for some time. He had a daughter and two grandchildren in the Bahamas, Goodman said.
