CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA: U.S. deaths in Iraq exceed 9-11 count (Associated Press)
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The number of U.S. military service members killed in Iraq has exceeded the number of victims in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to an Associated Press count. Car bomb attacks, meanwhile, killed at least 25 Iraqis.
With $1 billion wasted, more Katrina abuse yet to emerge (Associated Press)
WASHINGTON - The tally for Hurricane Katrina waste could top $2 billion next year because half of the lucrative government contracts valued at $500,000 or greater for cleanup work are being awarded without little competition.
DIONNE WALKER: Despite laws, gay wedding industry booms (Associated Press)
RICHMOND, Va. - He's no celebrity, but when Phillip McKee III tied the knot in September, he did it with all the pomp and circumstance of an A-lister: Custom-designed gold rings, a $2,000 kilt and a caviar-and-crepe reception at a five-star hotel.

Jon Pott: The Triumph of Genius: Celebrating Mozart (christianitytoday.com)
In 1892, the year following the centenary of Mozart's death, George Bernard Shaw, critic as well as playwright, felt it necessary to scold his readers for hardly yet having gotten out of the habit of regarding Mozart's compositions as "tuneful little trifles fit only for persons of simple tastes."
David Bruce: Wise Up! Christmas (athensnews.com)
* In the family of Quaker humorist Tom Mullen, as part of the Christmas tradition the youngest child opened her presents first. The youngest child was Ruthie, who was not as materialistic as her siblings. For Ruthie a great part of the pleasure of Christmas lay in making her siblings wait a long time to open their presents.
Genesis 11: 1-9 : "...Mankind, after the deluge, traveled from the mountain where the Ark had rested, and settled in a plain in the land of Shinar: Here they attempted to build a City and a Tower whose top might reach unto Heaven, the Tower of Babel,
The attempt to build the Tower had angered God and in his anger, made each person involved speak a different language which ultimately halted the project and scattered and disconnected the people across the Planet..."
The movie "Babel" is in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Berber, Arabic and in Sub-titles...true to the Old Testament prophecy, the Director recognizes the disparate nature of cultures and in the third piece of his cinematic puzzle, attempts to show that we are, in fact, all intimately connected.
Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) is a deaf and mute angsty Japanese teenager whose mother committed suicide. Her father, Yasujiro (Kðji Yakusho) is a distant and disconnected father: Chieko begins acting upon some dangerous sexual impulses with a policman who is questioning her dad in the city of Ibaragi, Japan.
Abdullah (Mustapha Rachidi) buys a rifle from a local trophy hunting guide to give to his sons to shoot jackals that are killing their sheep in the hills around Tazarine, Morocco. The two boys are jealous and competitive (like Cain and Abel) and end up shooting a bullet into a tour bus down on the paved road...this single act sets in motion the incredible interconnected story lines that somehow affect everyone.
Iñárritu seems to believe in the "Butterfly Effect"...in the synchronicity of accidents and how one single act can set off a series of incidents that are shared by many seemingly separate people....
The bullet that Abdullah's son fires, hits Susan who is on the bus with her husband Richard...who goes to a doctor in a small village and calls Amelia. He tells her she must watch the kids for a longer time now. Amelia's son is getting married in Tijuana, Mexico, and she must now take the kids illegally across the border with her nephew Santiago (Gael Garcia Bernal). After the wedding, Amelia and Santiago try to drive across the border and get hassled by the guards...they make a run for it and Amelia gets left alone in the desert with the kids...no water and no papers. Meanwhile, the bus shooting becomes blown up into a terrorist attack and Susan gets sewn up and smokes some opium and rests and she and Richard get helicoptored out. They feds descend upon Abdullah's place and beat up the whole family and shoot one of the sons before the other son confesses.
And back in Japan, we find out that Chieko's father was being questioned by the police because they had traced the serial numbers from the gun that Abdullah bought for his sons back to Yasujiro...he had given it to the hunting guide years ago as a "GIFT".
This is no "They all lived happily ever after" film. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I tried to draw some conclusions from the stories like..."Don't give guns away to kids"...or..."Don't fly all the way to Morocco to spice up your marriage"...or..."You don't have to get naked with a cop to get his attention"...or..."if you're an illegal alien without the proper papers, the border guards will give you shit!"
Michael Booth (Denver Post) called "Babel" ... "a Trilogy of Truth"
A.O. Scott (New York Times) said "Babel" is ... "Sheer Sensory Exuberance"
Mick LaSalle (S.F. Chronicle) described "Babel" as a work of ... "Profound Ambition"
Purple Gene gives "Babel" 7 spent shell casings out of 10 for being nowhere near a perfect movie but a strong statement with solid acting and stirring cinematography.

Hollywood golden couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt handed out presents on Christmas Day to Colombian war refugees in Costa Rica, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday.
Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and Pitt -- one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples -- were without their three children as they visited refugees who fled armed conflict in Colombia.
During their Costa Rican trip, the pair visited Colombian businesses funded by micro-credits, including a bakery where they were given a Christmas cake, gave presents to Colombian families and watched traditional Colombian dancing.
An album cover signed by all four Beatles as a gift for George Harrison's sister has sold at auction for more than $115,000.
The sale, to an unidentified buyer, was believed to set a record price for a signed Beatles album purchased at a public sale, said Mark Zakarin, president of the online auction company ItsOnlyRockNRoll.com. The exact price, with the buyer's commission, was $115,228.82.
Harrison wrote above his signature: "To Lou with love from `Brother'!!" John Lennon's inscription read, "To Lou many love from John Lennon X." Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr expressed similar feelings when all four signed the album cover while aboard a train to Washington for a 1964 concert.

Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger (R-Tool) underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a broken leg and was expected to make a full recovery, although he probably will be on crutches for his second inauguration next month, officials said.
The 59-year-old governor, actor and former bodybuilder fractured his right femur while skiing with his family in Sun Valley, Idaho, during the weekend.
He underwent a 90-minute operation in which cables and screws were used to wire the broken bone back together.
James Brown's lawyer said the late singer and his partner weren't legally married and that she was locked out of his South Carolina home for estate legal reasons. "It's not a reflection on her as an individual," lawyer Buddy Dallas told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I have not even been in the house, nor will I until appropriate protocol is followed."
Brown's partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, was already married to a Texas man in 2001 when she married Brown, thus making her marriage to the "Godfather of Soul" null, Dallas said. He said Hynie later annulled the previous marriage, but she and Brown never remarried.
Brown, 73, died at an Atlanta hospital Monday. After his death, Hynie, 36, found the gates to the singer's Beech Island, S.C., home padlocked and said she was denied access.
Hynie argued that she has a legal right to live in the home with the couple's 5-year-old son. "This is my home," she told a reporter outside the house. "I don't have any money. I don't have anywhere to go."

The holiday shopping season was expected to boost the number of U.S. homes with high-definition televisions to nearly 33 million. In the eyes of a growing number of image-obsessed on-air personalities, that's 33 million reasons to be concerned.
Besides spectacular vistas and shockingly real playing fields, hi-def clarity puts any and all wrinkles, pimples and pores on display in well-lit bathroom-mirror detail.
Some TV types say big-screen HDTV could lead to the end of the extreme close-up as we know it. Others predict hi-def fears could soon be reflected in artists' contracts.
This year's Wonders of America set climbed to second place in the most popular stamps, but Elvis is still the King, the Postal Service said Tuesday.
Following Elvis and the Wonders of America in popularity were Wildflowers, 1992, 76.1 million stamps saved; Rock & Roll/Rhythm & Blues, 1993, 75.9 million and DC Comics Super Heroes, 2006, 73.0 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Greetings From America, 2002, 71.4 million; Insects and Spiders, 1999, 61.0 million; Art of Disney: Romance, 2006, 57.2 million; Legends of Baseball, 2000, 53.9 million and Art of Disney: Celebration, 2005, 52.8 million.

The way Laura Ingalls Wilder used music to help weave her stories of life on the American frontier struck a chord with Dale Cockrell as he and his son read the "Little House" series nearly a decade ago.
Now, the Vanderbilt University professor has his own record label, Pa's Fiddle Recordings, and is in the midst of recording a 10-CD set that brings to life all 126 songs mentioned in Wilder's books.
With the 140th anniversary of Wilder's birth and the 50th anniversary of her death approaching in February, Cockrell was recently awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship to help with part of the project.
Fifteen years of warm winter weather is beginning to change the Washington area's landscape - with Southern species like crape myrtles having an easier time and northern types feeling less welcome, according to findings by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
The foundation has revised its map of "hardiness zones" - with each of the nine zones showing a range of average annual low temperatures that help serve as a guide for gardeners and others.
Fifteen years ago, a section of the Washington area fell into Zone 6, an area from Massachusetts to Kansas where the lows were between zero and 10 degrees below. The other part was in Zone 7, which spans the upper South, where temperatures were between zero and 10 degrees.
Now, all the Washington area now lies in Zone 7, which has taken over parts of the District and suburbs in Virginia and Maryland. Zone 7 has crept northward to take in most of Tennessee and Virginia as well as parts of North Carolina, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
A hail cannon is shown in the orchard of John Diepersloot in Kingsburg, Calif., Friday, Dec. 22, 2006. The thunderous boom from the cannon shatters hail before the ice chunks can pockmark fruit apples, peaches, plums and pears. The sonic machine, triggered by a radar signal when a storm is coming, is the latest high-tech equipment to protect crops from the elements. A single hail storm or freeze can destroy a crop overnight, paralyzing an economy dependent on agriculture.
