Grammys
The Recording Academy has announced the honorees for its 2021 Special Merit Awards.
The Lifetime Achievement Award honorees are Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Lionel Hampton, Marilyn Horne, Salt-N-Pepa, Selena, and Talking Heads.
Ed Cherney, Benny Golson and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds are Trustees Award honorees; and Daniel Weiss is the Technical Grammy Award recipient. The honorees will be recognized on the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 31, 2021. Given the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, more details about the special award presentation event will be announced at a later date, according to the announcement.
According to the announcement, the Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording, while the Trustees Award honors such contributions in areas other than performance. The Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees determines the honorees of both awards. Technical Grammy Award recipients are voted on by the Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees, and are ratified by the Academy’s Trustees. The award is presented to individuals and companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording industry.

Sales Soaring
Vinyl Albums
For the second time in a month, weekly vinyl album sales in the U.S. hit a new record high.
A total of 1.445 million vinyl albums were sold in the week ending Dec. 17 (up 9% compared to the previous week) – the biggest week yet for vinyl LP sales since Nielsen Music/MRC Data began electronically tracking music sales in 1991. The previous record week was set only two weeks earlier, when 1.253 million were sold in the week ending Dec. 3.
The top-selling vinyl album in the week ending Dec. 17 was Taylor Swift’s Folklore, with 23,000 copies sold (up 543%). Folklore got a big boost from sale pricing and promotion in Swift’s official webstore, where it’s available in assorted color variants.
The industry could hit another record high in the week ending Thursday, Dec. 24, as that tracking week will capture a full seven shopping days leading up to the Christmas Day holiday on Friday, Dec. 25.
Vinyl album sales have surpassed 1 million in a single week four times, and three of those have occurred in the last month: 1.445 million (week ending Dec. 17), 1.253 million (week ending Dec. 3) and 1.195 million (week ending Dec. 10). The other million-selling week came in 2019, when 1.243 million were sold in the week ending Dec. 26, 2019.

Sanctuary
Philadelphia
Oneita and Clive Thompson on Monday celebrated their freedom after spending more than two years – 843 days – living in sanctuary in Philadelphia churches to avoid deportation.
The Jamaican couple said they received notice from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week that the agency will support their case to stay in the country, The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported. Over the course of two years, the Thompsons gained national attention as one of many undocumented families that sought refuge in churches after President Donald Trump came into office.
"You just feel victorious," Oneita told USA TODAY on Monday. "Like a burden has just fallen off the shoulders."
Oneita said she and her husband came to the U.S. in 2004 to flee gang violence. Federal officials denied them asylum but they were given permission to work. In 2018, the Thompsons, who have five children, received a notice to leave the country.
The New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, a faith-based immigrant advocacy group, supported the Thompsons and helped them find refuge.

‘Alternate Reality’
Marion Says
Donald Trump (R-Loser) is living in an "alternate reality", televangelist Pat Robertson (R-Grifter) said on Monday, as he called on the president not to run for the White House again in 2024.
Acknowledging Joe Biden's election victory, Mr Roberston said it was time for the defeated incumbent to "move on", adding that the "electoral college has spoken".
His comments came as team Trump filed another desperate Supreme Court challenge to Mr Biden's victory in Pennsylvania, a state the president-elect carried by some 80,000 votes.
Speaking to the Christian Broadcasting Network, Mr Robertson, who is considered an ally of Mr Trump, said he believed Mr Biden will be sworn in come 20 January next year.
In his interview, Mr Robertson also predicted that the vice president-elect, Kamala Harris, would take over from Mr Biden "not too long after the inauguration", a claim repeatedly pushed by Republicans during the election campaign.

'Unwanted Gynecological Surgeries'
ICE
About 40 migrant women who were held at a Georgia detention center have filed a class-action lawsuit alleging they were subjected to medical abuse through nonconsensual or unnecessary procedures while in the facility.
The complaint, filed late Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, also claims women at the Irwin County Detention Center were retaliated against for speaking out against Dr. Mahendra Amin, of Ocilla, Georgia, who has been accused of the medical abuse.
About 40 women filed sworn testimony in the case, "revealing a relentless pattern of unnecessary and non-consensual medical procedures, including unwanted gynecological surgeries and other non-consensual medical interventions," according to a statement released with the complaint.
The filing also claims Irwin staff had been told about the medical abuse or neglect since at least 2018, but "nonetheless continued a policy or custom of sending women to be mistreated and abused by Respondent Amin."
The lawsuit said the women were retaliated against for speaking by such tactics as being placed in solitary confinement, being physically assaulted or deported or nearly deported. The United States has already deported several of Amin's former patients.

Dead Person Voting
Pennsylvania
Bruce Bartman has been charged with unlawful voting and perjury over allegations that he pretended to be his dead mother to cast a ballot in the November election for President Donald Trump (R-Crooked) in Pennsylvania.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer announced the charges in a press release Monday. Bartman was arraigned Friday and released on $100,000 bail, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. If convicted on all charges, the 70-year-old Bartman could spend up to 19 years in prison.
"This is the only known case of a 'dead person' voting in our county, conspiracy theories notwithstanding," Stollsteimer said in a statement. "Further, the prompt prosecution of this case shows that law enforcement will continue to uphold our election laws whenever presented with actual evidence of fraud and that we will continue to investigate every allegation that that comes our way."
Prosecutors said Bartman registered two dead people - his mother, Elizabeth Bartman, and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Weihman - as Republican voters in August. He used the state's online voter-registration portal, which allows residents to register to vote using their driver's license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number, prosecutors said.
Voter fraud is extremely rare in the US. A database maintained by the conservative Heritage Foundation found only 193 convicted cases of voter fraud between 2000 and 2020, during which about 250 million votes were cast. Republicans frequently make baseless claims that voter fraud has a larger scope and scale, while pushing for laws that would make it harder for people to vote.

Shatters Into Large Fragments
Iceberg A68a
The giant iceberg that's been drifting through the South Atlantic looks to have experienced a major break-up.
Tuesday's latest satellite imagery reveals major fissures in the tabular berg known as A68a, with huge blocks of ice starting to separate and move away from each other.
A68a, which calved from Antarctica in 2017, has been floating off the coast of South Georgia island.
The bergs get given a prefix letter depending on which quadrant of the Antarctic they calve from, plus a number to designate their position in the sequence of big breakaways. Fragmentations then earn a suffix letter.
Just last week, a big piece broke from A68a and this was called A68d. You can see "d" trailing behind the main berg in another Sentinel-1 image from Monday processed by Pierre Markuse.

World's Ugliest Orchid
Gastrodia agnicellus
Orchids are usually prized for their grace and loveliness, but a newly described species from Madagascar probably won't be winning any beauty contests. Its small flowers are a mottled brown, and it resembles a moldy paper bag (or maybe an eyeless, wormlike head with a mouth gaping in a silent scream or to consume your soul).
It's no wonder that the newfound species has been called "the ugliest orchid in the world" by the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) in the United Kingdom, which recently placed the homely newcomer at the top of a list highlighting species discovered in 2020, representatives said in a statement.
The leafless orchid, named Gastrodia agnicellus, grows underground in decaying leaf litter for most of its life cycle, and is nourished by fungus. In addition to the "small, brown and rather ugly" orchid, researchers and collaborators with RBG Kew described more than 150 plants and fungi this year, according to the statement.
In 2019, British botanist Johan Hermans, an RBG Kew honorary research associate, found a number of G. agnicellus orchids hiding under leaf litter in a humid Madagascar forest. Their lumpy, oblong shapes hinted that the flower belonged to a group known as potato orchids, and the blooms, which measure about 0.4 inches (1.1 centimeters) in length, emit a "noticeable musk rose-like scent" that intensifies when air temperatures are warmer, Hermans wrote in a study published Nov. 5 in the journal Curtis's Botanical Magazine.
Other newly described species on the list include a scaly, heat-resistant shrub that thrives in Namibian salt pans (Tiganophyton karasense); a Peruvian plant with purple tubers that could be a new food crop (Ipomoea noemana); and a vibrant, colorful bromeliad — a family of tropical, flowering plants that includes the pineapple — from Brazil (Acanthostachys calcicola) that grows on limestone cliffs and may be pollinated by hummingbirds, according to the statement.
