M Is FOR MASHUP - December 16th, 2008

I know from looking at so many mashup sites that a lot of you are out there enjoying the mixes. Youse mugs that know about mashups seek them out & listen. But did you realize that many of your fave tracks have a video as well? Don't kick yourself, but you could easily have been watching mashup vids for years now. They don't often get the massive response of the mp3 versions, but some do & boy do they ever!
For instance check out DJ Earworm getting over 52,000 views on youtube for his Sean Kingston Mashup video 'Beautiful Mashup'.
Or Faroff's getting over 129,000 views for his mix 'The Beatles vs LCD Soundsystem vs The Kinks'.
Or DJ Magnet's 'Octopus's Santeria' (Beatles vs. Sublime) having over 21,000 views. That, in my opinion,is a really fine response.
Yeah, there's a good bunch of people out there mixing with video instead of music & one of the best is BorisB ( borisbvideos.webs.com/ ) I like his work because he matches the imagery so well with the actual tunes.
Certainly he made my current top fave mashup video, & that would be DJ Schmolli's 'Iron Order' (New Order vs Iron Butterfly). The cutting of the Tom & Jerry toon that forms much of the the film totally gives the impression that a cat is singing the track. In a mere 3 months on YouTube alone, the vid has had 1,731 views. I don't know how people manage to find the mashup vids, but I'm sure glad they do. Just think, there's also Vimeo ( www.vimeo.com/alternativeboris/videos ) & other video hosters. It really shows how people love their visuals.
BorisB is a great video mixing talent, & the proof is right there on his site
He's done astonishing vids for tracks like The Illuminoids' 'God Save The Thief' (Sex Pistols vs Wolfmother), Futuro's 'Breathe With Me Till Dawn' (Pink Floyd vs Judie Tzuke) & Soundhog's 'Are You Gonna Be My Dirrty Girl' (Christina Aguilera vs Jet). Those are just the tip of the iceberg, too. With my enormous interest in mashups I wasn't happy till I'd seen all of his vids.& now that I have, here he comes with more! If you read the recent column here that mentioned Qubic's new project CONTINUUM 08 you saw BorisB had joined in with Qubic, Guv'nor, & The Reborn Identity to make vids for every track on the album. Great stuff, too. Now just this week comes his crowning masterpiece, DJ Zebra's fantastic & fantastically successful project 'BOOTSTOCK', a 40th anniversary tribute to Woodstock. BorisB (joined for one vid by Addictive TV) has put visual life to the entire album.I've been digging them all day.
Tracks like DJ Zebra's 'Freedom For The Hobo' (Richie Havens vs. Charlie Winston vs Yazoo), Mighty Mike's 'Soul Control' (Santana vs The Gossip vs Free) & ToTom's 'Street Sweeper Social Volunteers' (Jefferson Airplane vs Street Sweeper Social Club) are all the more astonishing when you see BorisB's footage. Get it now in one long dvd-like file or grab them as solo track videos.
Boris has you covered both ways! (
borisbvideos.webs.com/bootstockthemovie.htm )
Bookmark BorisB's site & check it often for he is one prolific video artist. Mashup-Charts has an entire section devoted to his vids ( http://www.mashup-charts.com/artist/?bootlegger=BorisB ).
Mashuptown ( www.mashuptown.com/ ) shows their love of BorisB's technique regularly.
Mashuphits has a killer new mashup video channel ( www.mashuphits.com/view.php?a=157 where you can see Boris's stuff alongside other worthwhile creations. An entire channel for mashup videos! Far out!
You're in for hours of splendid bootleg film at any of these links, & BorisB is there on all of them.
Dig in now & send your friends the links for Christmas gifts.
Let 'frankincense, myrrh & mashup videos' be the cry this holiday season!
(Final note - I couldn't locate any pics of BorisB, so I just did a search & used some of the results I got from 'borisb'. lol)
Mix Of The Week - Colatron's 'Tenebrism' is a very mellow affair, but it still has lots of edge.
Available as one long mix,or in a tracked version (I went for both) 'Tenebrism' is surely one of the strongest bootleg mixes you'll hear. Plus you get to see Colatron unclothed on the cover.(for those of you who prefer naked dj's).
Find the mix here - ( www.colatron.com/2009/12/tenebrism.html )
'Smack My Animals Up' (Nickelback vs Prodigy) is one of the most energetic mashup tracks you'll hear this week. Seriously, check it out in headphones for a massive example of sound separation. Nearly all the Nickelback is in the left channel, & nearly all the Prodigy is in the right channel. It will blow your mind! ( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2009/11/smack-my-animals-up-nickelback-vs.html )

Watching "Avatar," I felt sort of the same as when I saw "Star Wars" in 1977. That was another movie I walked into with uncertain expectations. James Cameron's film has been the subject of relentlessly dubious advance buzz, just as his "Titanic" was. Once again, he has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.
Roger Ebert: Review of " THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG" (G; 3 stars)
The opening scenes of Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" are like a cool shower after a long and sweaty day. This is what classic animation once was like! No 3-D! No glasses! No extra ticket charge! No frantic frenzies of meaningless action! And . . . good gravy! A story! Characters! A plot! It's set in a particular time and place! And it uses (calm me down here) lovingly hand-drawn animation that proceeds at a human pace, instead of racing with odd smoothness. I'm just gonna stand here and let it pour over me.

This message came to me from a reader named Peter Svensland. He and a friend have been debating about my qualities as a film critic, and they've involved a considerable critic, Dan Schneider, in their discussion. I will say that he has given the question a surprising amount of thought and attention over the years, and may well be correct in some aspects. What his analysis gives me is a renewed respect and curiosity about his own work.

House Honors
Miles Davis
Fifty years after jazz legend Miles Davis recorded "Kind of Blue," the House voted Tuesday to honor the landmark album's contribution to the genre.
Davis collaborated on the record with saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb.
Columbia Records released the album in August 1959. The original album - only 37 minutes - had a huge impact that extended beyond jazz to other types of music - from rock musicians such as the Allman Brothers and Carlos Santana to minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Davis, one of the greatest trumpeters in jazz history, died of a stroke in 1991 at age 65. He was renowned for morphing his cool jazz into fusion and experimental sounds that later gave way to jazz funk and hip-hop grooves. Cobb is the only musician from the "Kind of Blue" album who is still alive.

2010 Inductees
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gave a big "Thank You For The Music" to ABBA on Tuesday, announcing that the Swedish pop group would be among its 2010 inductees.
British rock band Genesis, reggae superstar Jimmy Cliff, rockers The Stooges, and The Hollies are also among the legends who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony on March 15 in New York.
The new members "represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame foundation CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement.

Toothpick For Sale
Charles Dickens
An ivory and gold toothpick once owned by Charles Dickens is being auctioned in New York City.
It's being offered by heirs to the Barnes & Noble family and is up for sale Tuesday at Bonhams New York. The pre-sale estimate is $3,000 to $5,000.
The toothpick is engraved with the author's initials and has a retracting mechanism.
An authentication letter from sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth says the British writer of "A Christmas Carol" and "Oliver Twist" used the toothpick "when travelling and on his last visit to America."

Lacks Sense Of Humor
North Face
The North Face Apparel Corp. is suing a small suburban St. Louis-area company called The South Butt and the teenager who started it. The lawsuit filed last week in federal court in St. Louis seeks unspecified damages and asks the court to prohibit The South Butt from marketing and selling its parody product line.
The North Face says it does not comment on pending litigation.
The South Butt's attorney, Albert Watkins, says the company was started by 18-year-old Jimmy Winkelmann to help pay for college. It puts out products with the tag line "Never Stop Relaxing," a parody of The North Face line, "Never Stop Exploring."
The parody company sells T-shirts, fleece jackets and sweatshirts on its Web site.

Make Short Work of GOP's URL
Pranksters
The Republican party took down its innovative link-shortening tool Tuesday for several hours after pranksters had a field day using the tool to associate the GOP with bondage sites.
As part of its new media strategy, the Republican party launched a new site called GOP.am on Monday. It's a URL shortener designed to make it easy for conservative web surfers to exchange links to web pages.
Pranksters almost immediately began using the service to link to controversial or ironically intended websites, such as the official site of the American Communist Party, a bondage website and a webpage advertising a sex toy in the likeness of Barack Obama. GOP.am apparently started blocking such links at some point Tuesday morning, and the GOP.am homepage was taken offline.
Possibly the first branded URL shortener, GOP.am was designed by the RNC's new media consultants, Political Media, to work somewhat like bit.ly, in that it shortens URLs so that they can be more easily exchanged through short messaging services like Twitter. Google launched its own URL shortener Monday afternoon, and Facebook now has one, too.
But unlike bit.ly, GOP.am includes a toolbar at the top of the screen that follows users as they click through to see whatever pages the links go to. It also sports an animation of RNC chairman Michael Steele walking around on the lower right as if he's showing off the website - particularly awkward when that website is the alt.com bondage site. Users of the Balloon-Juice website entertained each other last night by exchanging scores of such links, which have since been blocked.

Mobster Blames Alcohol
Henry Hill
A gangster-turned-FBI informant whose exploits were the basis of the 1990 Martin Scorsese mob film "Goodfellas" said Tuesday his struggles with alcohol again are to blame for his weekend arrest after a drunken disturbance at a hotel.
Police hauled 66-year-old Henry Hill of Topanga, Calif., away in handcuffs Sunday after the dustup in a Drury Inn lobby in Fairview Heights, Ill., while he was in the St. Louis area for a three-day showing of his artwork and to sign autographs at a nearby Larry Flynt strip club.
Free on bond on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Hill told The Associated Press on Tuesday he doesn't remember much about the weekend flare-up at the Drury.
Fairview Heights police Sgt. Steve Evans said he had no immediate details about Hill's arrest, downplaying it as "news simply because of who's involved, but other than that it was a pretty routine arrest."

California Court No-Show
Randy Quaid
Arrests warrants have been issued for actor Randy Quaid and his wife after they failed to appear for a court hearing, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
The couple didn't show up in a Santa Barbara criminal court Tuesday on a felony charge that they defrauded an innkeeper. The no-show will cost the couple $40,000 in forfeited bail.
It was the most recent in a string of court absences that have resulted in arrest warrants and an aborted attempt to extradite the pair from Randy Quaid's home state of Texas.
Randy and Evi Quaid were arrested on Sept. 24 in West Texas after being accused of using an invalid credit card to defraud the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito of more than $10,000.

Energy-Efficient Can't Melt Snow
Traffic Lights
Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don't burn hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm - a problem blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.
Many communities have switched to LED bulbs in their traffic lights because they use 90 percent less energy than the old incandescent variety, last far longer and save money. Their great advantage is also their drawback: They do not waste energy by producing heat.
Authorities in several states are testing possible solutions, including installing weather shields, adding heating elements like those used in airport runway lights, or coating the lights with water-repellent substances.
Short of some kind of technological fix, "as far as I'm aware, all that can be done is to have crews clean off the snow by hand," said Green Bay, Wis., police Lt. Jim Runge. "It's a bit labor-intensive."

Oral Roberts
Evangelist Oral Roberts, who rose from tent revivals to found a multimillion-dollar organization and an Oklahoma university bearing his name, has died. He was 91.
His spokesman A. Larry Ross said by phone from Carrollton, Texas, that Roberts died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia in Newport Beach, Calif. Roberts was hospitalized after a fall on Saturday. He had survived two heart attacks in the 1990s and a broken hip in 2006.
Roberts overcame tuberculosis at age 17, and credited that triumph with leading him to become one of the country's most famous ministers.
By the 1960s and '70s, the Oklahoma-born Roberts was reaching millions around the world through broadcasting, publications and personal appearances. Oral Roberts University, chartered in 1963, became a Tulsa landmark.
