M Is FOR MASHUP - December 15th, 2010
Hop On Pop vs Pop
By DJ Useo
I am honoured to be one of the super-moderators at Sound-Unsound Mashup forum. It means I'm in charge of running the posts, & threads,& occasionally assisting with putting together the latest Sound-Unsound Mashup album. The last few SUS comps had their themes chosen by 2 other fine moderators, mARKYbOY & DJ MashUP. They made the excellent decisions to direct us recently with comps done in Reggaeton, Flamenco & Chill styles. I was delighted my choice to do the new SUS comp in Pop style was approved. My thought was that even though the previous albums were finestkind, perhaps yielding to the most widely-liked type of tune would get an even bigger audience. Not to mention I thought it would be a challenge,& I like a challenge.
Well, if there's any bootleg justice, the new collection, WORLD'S GREATEST POP MASHUPS, will find a massive audience. We started a thread for the comp announcing the new project to all SUS members, & immediately I recieved submitted tracks that impressed me immensely. Many mashup fans seem to prefer their bootlegs mixed with opposing styles. A really strong pairing of same styles can still grab a substantial number of satisfied ears. I was convinced the new pop on pop comp was a viable idea as soon as I heard the first several tracks.
While the others began sending in their pieces, I applied myself to mixing appropriate mashups & soon had a LARGE batch which I forwarded to the other SUS mods.
They lent their gifted ear talents to the selections & whittled them down to a mere few. One track, a mashup of Michael Jackson & Christina Aguilera was a request from a non-mixing member whose name is lost now. Thanks for the suggestion, anonymous, I think it was an excellent one.
Meanwhile, I was working on some tracks for an upcoming Year-end mashup record for CULTURE BULLY, the excellent mainstream music review site. The CULTURE BULLY record is styled such that mashers are meant to use tracks from the last years' top 40 material. I kept dipping into the latest tracks & ended up with plenty more than CULTURE BULLY required. So, I ended up with even more tracks to contribute to the POP comp. I sent them off to the other mods, too.
Meanwhile, more incredible tracks had arrived from the other SUS contributors. As I heard the new ones, I kept thinking, 'These should be copyright-cleared & released by some label to earn money!' You remember, I'm sure that mashers can't claim copyrights to the other peoples' work they cut & paste. I was mildly surprised that the record didn't flesh out to two discs, but honestly, the one disc we managed is so strong, I'm completely satisfied. I reckon you'll be pleased, too, when you hear the final release.

Here's a complete list of Golden Globes Nominations - 2011
Class Of 2011 Announced
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Neil Diamond had been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for several years but never got a nomination to join music's prestigious club. But he was never really worried about it.
That point came on Tuesday, as the 2011 class for the Cleveland hall was revealed. Diamond, whose hits include "Sweet Caroline," made the list, along with the Alice Cooper Band, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Tom Waits.
Piano man Leon Russell was honored with a musical excellence award, previously the sideman category. Executives Jac Holzman and Art Rupe were given the Ahmet Ertegun Awards.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum induction ceremony is scheduled for March 14 in New York City. The festivities will be aired on Fuse.

Offers Bail
Michael Moore
Activist filmmaker Michael Moore said Tuesday he offered 20,000 dollars to help WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange post bail in London, and his own website and servers to help WikiLeaks keep disclosing government secrets.
In a statement posted on thedailybeast.com, Moore said a British court on Monday was presented with "a document from me stating that I have put up 20,000 dollars of my own money to help bail Mr Assange out of jail."
Moore, whose anti-establishment documentaries have also irked US government and corporate leaders, questioned the charges brought against Assange.
"All I ask is that you not be naive about how the government works when it decides to go after its prey. Please -- never, ever believe the 'official story,'" he said, adding that guilty or innocent, Assange has the right to defend himself.
Moore also offered "the assistance of my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars."

Newest Hero?
Berkeley
Some consider a soldier's alleged release of classified information to WikiLeaks an act of treason. The City Council in Berkeley is deciding whether to proclaim him a hero deserving of a medal.
The council in this famously liberal city is considering a resolution Tuesday night bestowing hero status on Pfc. Bradley Manning, the soldier at the center of the Wikileaks fury. Manning has become a hero to some groups on the anti-war left who believe the soldier performed a valuable public service.
The city put a measure on the 2006 ballot calling for the impeachment of resident George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney and more recently tried to declare Marine recruiters "unwanted intruders."
The resolution proposed by the city's Peace and Justice Commission praises Manning for exposing "war crimes" by allegedly leaking a 2007 video of a laughing U.S. Apache helicopter crew gunning down 11 men in Baghdad, Iraq, including a Reuters news photographer.

New Show Starts In January
Roger Ebert
Film critic Roger Ebert's new movie review television show has been cleared to air in 192 markets across the United States and worldwide on the Armed Forces Network.
A post on Ebert's Twitter feed this week says "Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies" will debut Jan. 21. The Armed Forces Network broadcasts to more than 1,000 outlets in more than 175 countries, U.S. territories and aboard U.S. Navy ships.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Sun-Times critic lost his ability to speak and eat after cancer surgeries.
Ebert announced in September he would return to television using his computer voice on a special show segment called "Roger's Office." The half-hour review program will air weekly. It will feature thumbs up and thumbs down reviews made famous with his late partner Gene Siskel.

CNN Morning Show Changes
John Roberts
Troubled CNN is looking to give a facelift to its morning news show, seeking a more "upbeat" mix of stories and leaving anchor John Roberts behind in the process.
The network said Tuesday that Roberts, a former CBS News anchor, has left the show. Roberts is engaged to CNN anchor Kyra Phillips and has requested a reporting assignment that will take him closer to her home and the network's Atlanta base.
CNN also said the "American Morning" executive producer, Jamie Kraft, has left CNN to take a job at NBC News.
Just like in prime time, CNN has been outflanked in the morning by more pointed, personality-driven shows on rival cable networks. CNN is fourth in the morning ratings behind Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends," CNN sister station HLN's "Morning Express" and MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Blocks Media
Air Force
The Air Force is blocking computer access to The New York Times and other media sites that published sensitive diplomatic documents released by the Internet site WikiLeaks, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Air Force Maj. Toni Tones said more than 25 websites have been blocked and cannot be viewed by any Air Force computer. The ban - aimed at preventing the viewing of classified information - does not apply to personal computers.
She said the action was taken by the 24th Air Force, which is commanded by Maj. Gen. Richard Webber and is responsible for cyberwarfare and computer security for the service. The move was approved by Air Force lawyers, she said.
Tones said the New York Times is the only major U.S. newspaper included in the ban. Others include Der Spiegel in Germany, the Guardian in Britain and Le Monde in France.

Family Sues
A&E
The family of a 7-year-old girl killed in a Detroit police raid has sued A&E Television Networks over the videotaping of the raid.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit says the network and a production crew filming for "The First 48" cable television series were responsible for the May 16 death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, who was shot in the head during the raid.
The Detroit Free Press says the lawsuit claims that A&E and the production company encouraged Detroit police "to conduct an illegal, overly aggressive, and unnecessary raid" on the home.
Aiyana was killed by an officer's bullet when police stormed her house searching for a homicide suspect. State police have been investigating.

Pleads Guilty
Rip Torn
Prosecutors say actor Rip Torn has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from allegations he broke into a Connecticut bank while drunk and armed.
The star of movies including "Men in Black" and "The Beastmaster" was arrested in January after police found him inside the Litchfield Bancorp with a loaded revolver.
State's attorney David Shepack says the Emmy Award-winning actor pleaded guilty Tuesday to reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and the illegal carrying of a firearm.
The 80-year-old actor was given a 2 1/2-year suspended sentence and three years of probation. Conditions include a ban on firearm possession and random drug and alcohol tests.

2 Book Deal
Juan Williams
The commentator fired by National Public Radio in October for his remarks about Muslims has a deal to write two books.
Crown Publishers announced Tuesday the first book by Juan Williams will "focus on free speech and the growing difficulty in America of speaking out on sensitive topics."
Williams was let go by NPR after saying on the Fox News Republican Propaganda Channel he gets nervous when he sees on a plane people with clothing that identifies them as Muslim.
NPR said his remarks violated its standards of not having on-air personnel giving opinions. Williams said he was hurt by the suggestion he's a bigot.

Sues Black Eyed Peas
George Clinton
Funk pioneer George Clinton wants a federal judge to force the Black Eyed Peas to shut up when it comes to sampling his music.
Clinton sued the Grammy-winning pop group in Los Angeles on Friday, claiming it used elements of his 1979 song "(Not Just) Knee Deep" in remixes of their song "Shut Up."
The song first appeared on the group's 2003 album "Elephunk," and it released "Shut Up Remix" the same year. It also was used in another remix included on the deluxe edition of the Peas' 2009 release, "The E.N.D.," according to the complaint.
Clinton says he never granted permission for the use of his music, and he is seeking copyright infringement damages and an injunction to block further sales of the remixes.

Judge Won't Dismiss Legal Fee Dispute
Phil Spector
A jury should decide whether imprisoned record producer Phil Spector should be refunded $1 million he paid to his former criminal defense attorney after his 2003 arrest, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Malcolm Mackey rejected a bid by Robert Shapiro's lawyers to have Spector's claims dismissed, saying it would be up to jurors to decide whether the fee was nonrefundable.
The producer and Shapiro, who was a member of O.J. Simpson's defense team, have been sparring over the money for years.
Spector contends Shapiro took advantage of him while he was facing charges for shooting a woman at his mansion; Shapiro has countered that it was clear that the fee was nonrefundable.

New Tenant In Old Store
Harvey Milk
On the surface, the new tenant at the storefront where Harvey Milk waged his historic political campaign would seem like the last organization to anger people in the gay community.
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights lobbying group, wants to open up an information center and a gift shop in the building that would pay tribute to the slain gay rights leader.
But Milk's friends and admirers are so incensed at the group taking over the slain San Francisco supervisor's stomping grounds that they would rather see a Starbucks there, underscoring the tensions that exist within the various factions of the gay rights movement.
The organization is a frequent target of criticism from gay rights activists who consider its mainstream, "inside the Beltway" style ineffective. They believe the organization's philosophy of incremental progress in the gay rights movement runs completely counter to the uncompromising message of gay pride championed by Milk.
"It's spitting in the face of Harvey's memory," said AIDS Memorial Quilt founder Cleve Jones, who received his political education at Milk's side in the 1970s.

Photo Sold At Auction
Michael Jackson
A photograph of Michael Jackson posing as an Egyptian pharaoh sold for 26,000 euros ($34,880) Monday at an auction featuring four never-before-seen portraits of the "King of Pop."
The portrait of the late "Thriller" singer as a pharaoh, dressed in a gold cape and with dark shaded eyes, was bought at the Paris auction by Ora-Ito designer Ito Morabito. With the added commission, the final price ran at 32,240 euros.
The pictures were taken in 1999 by French photographer Arno Bani, then just 23. Jackson had reportedly wanted him to take the pictures for his 10th album "Invincible," released in 2001, the singer's last studio album.
The photographer signed over the rights to Sony for 10 years but the pictures were never used by the record label.

Slow Sales Equal Fargo 'Vacation'
Hot Tamales
There is an old saying in the sales business: Always be closing. Here is a new one: Always be freezing, if you do not sell enough.
The company that makes Hot Tamales candy offered its sales team an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii if it met its annual goals, and a trip to the nation's arctic tundra if it didn't.
The Just Born team did not meet its target and, on Tuesday, about two dozen salespeople gathered inside the 19-story Radisson hotel - the tallest building in frozen Fargo.
Next winter, if the group fails to reach its goal, they will get an all-expenses paid trip to Rapid City, S.D.

Inmate Claims Holiday
'Festivus'
An Orange County jail inmate caused a stir this year by successfully claiming the fictitious holiday Festivus, made famous on the television show "Seinfeld," as part of his religious beliefs to score better meals.
Malcolm Alarmo King, 38, enjoyed "a high protein no salami diet 3 times per day for 'Festivism'" according to a court order by Orange County Superior Court Judge Derek G. Johnson.
King, who was serving a one-year sentence at Theo Lacy Jail for a drug offense, also got the judge to sign off on double portions of kosher meals three times a day in a bizarre arrangement first reported by the Orange County Register.
Before long, jail personnel familiar with the "Seinfeld" episode that popularized "Festivus for the rest of us" as an alternative to the commercialism of the holiday season were snickering about the inmate's request, which they suspected was less than legitimate
