Way back in 2010 there was a now defunct site for mashups called “Culture Bully” run by the swell bloke Chris DeLine. Culture Bully released a lot of great mashup comps, & I even made it onto a few. “Culture Bully Presents 2010 Mashed” was only one of the albums made available. I’d long ago burnt it onto a disc, but now I found the disc stopped playing(!).
Of course, with the Culture Bully site no longer available, the album became very hard to locate. I checked with many pals, & some contributors, but no luck. Sigh. Then, over this last weekend the search results shifted slightly, & I found the entire album linked from Chris’ site. Woot! So, you can all access the track by track links from this handy page
( www.chrisdeline.com/blog/mashed-2010 )
The ten incredible tracks are from a rather impressive group of home producers. ( Bootleggers, if you will ) Among the featured mixers are DJ Lobsterdust, ToToM, G3rst, DJ Schmolli, & even humble me, plus more. The likely response to hearing this album is that you’ll want more mashups. An easy way to achieve that access is to check Bartcop E Wednesday archives for past “M Is For Mashup” articles.
There’s also a one-track streaming version still hosted at Mixcloud.com
( www.mixcloud.com/culturebully/culture-bully-presents-2010-mashed/ ) . People often ask me personally for this type of post, so they can stream & play easily while out & about. Just think how cool you’ll look to everyone when they hear amazing mashup versions of the songs they already love.
I hope you get much pleasure from “Culture Bully Presents 2010 Mashed”. I reckon a few years more & the comp will vanish from history, as much of the net does. Oh, & please tell your friends. Man will live you better.
Please to be having the day of good. - DJ Konrad Useo
• Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho experimented with sex when he was a young man. He had been in mental hospitals, in part because his mother thought that he had sexual problems. This made him think that he might be gay, so he had gay sex three times. The first time that he had gay sex, he was nervous and he did not enjoy it. Thinking that perhaps being nervous had made him not enjoy the experience, he had gay sex a second time. This time he was not nervous, but he still did not enjoy the experience. “Third time lucky,” he thought, and so he tried gay sex again, and he still did not enjoy the experience, so he realized that he was not gay and started pursuing women.
• When ballerina Allegra Kent decided to write her life story, at first she thought of getting the help of a professional writer. This did not work out. When the professional writer met Allegra’s husband, whom she had divorced and who had had many affairs, the professional writer asked him, “What is the state of your pr*ck?” She also asked Allegra, “By the way, have you ever slept with anyone famous?” (Allegra disappointed her by answering, “I don’t think so.”)
• Georges Simenon, creator of the detective Maigret, was a man of big statistics. For example, he wrote approximately 400 works of fiction and he sold over 500 million copies of his books. These facts are verifiable. What is not verifiable is his claim to have had sex with 10,000 women. His second wife did not believe that particular figure — she thought that he had had sex with “no more than 1,200” women.
Shakespeare
• Many people, including playwright Tom Stoppard, were put off by Shakespeare early in their lives. Times journalist Benedict Nightingale asked Mr. Stoppard about his first experience of Shakespeare: watching Laurence Olivier in the movie Hamlet. Mr. Stoppard replied, “It bored me sh*tless.” Fortunately, he overcame his aversion to Shakespeare and wrote both the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and the movie Shakespeare in Love.
• As a little girl, Emma Lazarus was taught at school by a tutor who introduced her to the works of William Shakespeare. Unfortunately, Ms. Lazarus’ parents felt that Shakespeare’s plays were not appropriate for their daughter because they were violent and sexual. Therefore, the tutor was fired. Later, when Ms. Lazarus was a young woman, Ralph Waldo Emerson recommended that she make a close study of Shakespeare.
Television
• In 2007, Paul Schrader wrote and directed the movie The Walker, which starred Woody Harrelson, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Lauren Bacall, whose character had many good lines that Mr. Schrader had collected for years. Someone asked Mr. Schrader if he were interested in writing a TV series that would star this particular character; however, he responded, “Look, it took me years to collect all those funny lines; you expect me to write a show every week? I’m not that good.”
• John Waters, aka the Prince of Puke, both writes and directs his films, which tend to be cult favorites. He once appeared on TV’s Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in the 1990s, but he was amazed that the episode ever appeared on TV. He says that during the episode, “I would point to stuff in my house and say things like ‘I found this in the trash,’ ‘This cost a nickel,’ or ‘I stole it.’”
• When Don Adams was approached to star as Maxwell Smart in the TV series Get Smart, he asked who wrote the script for the pilot episode. On hearing the answer — comedy geniuses Mel Brooks and Buck Henry — he said, “Ok, I’ll do it.”
Following the title line of Electric Light Orchestra's highest-charting hit in the United States to date, the name "Bruce" is commonly misheard. What is the title of this 1979 ELO hit?
What musical instrument, typically housed in the bell tower (belfry) of a church or municipal building, consists of at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells?
A carillon is a musical instrument typically housed in the bell tower (belfry) of a church or municipal building. The instrument consists of at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells, which are played serially to produce a melody, or together to play a chord. A traditional manual carillon is played by striking a keyboard—the stick-like keys of which are called batons—with the fists, and by pressing the keys of a pedal keyboard with the feet. The keys mechanically activate levers and wires connected to metal clappers which strike the bells.
Although unusual, real carillons have occasionally been fitted to theatre organs (instead of the metal bars or chimes more often used in simulation), such as the Christie organ at the Regal Cinema, Marble Arch, in London. A carillon-like instrument with fewer than 23 bells is called a chime.
The word "carillon" is said to originate from the French quadrillon, meaning four bells. In German, a carillon is called a Glockenspiel. The percussion instrument called a glockenspiel by English speakers is often called a carillon in French.

After moving last year from its longtime New York base to L.A., Cyndi Lauper’s annual benefit for homeless LGBTQ youth has found a new home for these holidays, and it’s online, of course. Taking her 10th annual “Home for the Holidays” special to a webcast format will allow for an even broader array of talent than usual — with Cher, Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlile, Dolly Parton, Adam Lambert and Jackson Browne all sharing a virtual stage for the first time, it’s safe to say.
A number of major stars have also signed on for non-performing appearances on this weekend’s show, including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, LL Cool J, Bette Midler and Henry Rollins.
The premiere is a staggered one, by platform. “Home for the Holidays” will stream on TikTok first, at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT Friday. On Sunday night, it’ll appear again, this time on both YouTube and Facebook, with the same 8 p.m. eastern start time.
“The good news is Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Home for the Holidays’ is back,” Lauper said in a social media announcement. “The other good news is, pants are optional.”
Others lined up to sing a holiday or non-holiday number or add a spot of comedy include multiple Grammy nominee Brittany Howard, Boy George, the duo of Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Billy Porter, King Princess, Kim Petras, Judy Gold, Meg Myers, Shea Diamond and the cast of Lauper’s stage musical, “Kinky Boots.” Additional guests include Carson Kressley, Harvey Fierstein, Justin Tranter, Sharon Osbourne, Whoopi Goldberg and the “True Colors” songwriting team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.
George Clooney’s co-stars, friends and collaborators gathered virtually to share anecdotes and praise his contributions as actor, director, humanitarian and colleague -- not to mention Sexiest Man Alive twice over.
Among those paying tribute to Clooney at the Museum of Modern Art’s annual film benefit Monday night was David Letterman, who recalled something Clooney had once said to him “that I carry with me today.”
Clooney had told him his humanitarian efforts in Darfur hadn’t turned out quite as he’d hoped, but added that it didn’t matter. “What matters is you just keep trying,” Letterman quoted Clooney as saying. “If it doesn’t work the first time, try something else.”
“And I thought, ‘This is such a simple, eloquent way to express the importance of helping others,’” Letterman said. “I’ve never forgotten it and I never will.”
Clooney joins a group of previous MoMA honorees that includes Martin Scorsese, Tom Hanks, Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodovar and others. MoMA’s annual film benefit raises funds to bring great works of film to the museum’s collection. This year, amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the event -- presented since 2011 by Chanel -- also benefits Artist Relief, an emergency initiative supporting artists.
Howard Stern, the "King of All Media," will continue to make satellite radio giant SiriusXM his home, extending his long-running deal with the company for his flagship show by five years.
The deal, unveiled Tuesday, also covers the Stern archive for seven additional years. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Stern, 66, is currently working under a five-year deal with Sirius, estimated to be worth as much as $100 million a year, that expires at the end of this year. Recent chatter had focused on the new deal being for up to $120 million per year.
The news was first announced by Stern live during his show Tuesday morning. "Fifteen years ago, I joined SiriusXM, a fledgling group of broadcasters. I had been in a toxic relationship with terrestrial radio," Stern said. "And no matter how well I treated the medium, no matter how successful I made them, they abused me. Going to SiriusXM liberated me. I felt like Tina Turner freeing myself from Ike."
He added: "And despite the naysayers and the ridicule, we have persevered and are thriving. I've been proven right about satellite radio over and over again. With this contract renewal, I can't wait to see what else I'll be right about. Certainly, I have a lot more to say about Metamucil crackers and stepmom porn. Plus, now that I can work from home, I simply don't have an excuse to quit."
Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is going behind the scenes for the next Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday that Soderbergh, “Erin Brokovich” producer Stacey Sher and awards show veteran Jesse Collins have come on board to produce the 93rd Oscars telecast.
It’s the first time producing the annual film awards for all three, who are taking up the mantle from last year’s producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain.
The 93rd Academy Awards were delayed two months earlier this year because of COVID-19’s effects on the film industry, but the show will still be televised live on ABC on April 25, 2021. No official announcements have been made as to whether 93rd Oscars will be virtual, as many other awards shows including the Emmys have done because of the pandemic, although signs point to a willingness to adapt to the moment.
Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said that this upcoming show is “the perfect occasion for innovation and re-envisioning the possibilities for the awards show.”
Last year’s show, the second in a row without a host, had the smallest audience ever of 23.6 million viewers, down 20% from the year prior.
A former Israeli space security chief has sent eyebrows shooting heavenward by saying that earthlings have been in contact with extraterrestrials from a "galactic federation."
"The Unidentified Flying Objects have asked not to publish that they are here, humanity is not ready yet," Haim Eshed, former head of Israel's Defense Ministry's space directorate, told Israel's Yediot Aharonot newspaper. The interview in Hebrew ran on Friday, and gained traction after parts were published in English by the Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
A respected professor and retired general, Eshed said the aliens were equally curious about humanity and were seeking to understand "the fabric of the universe."
Eshed said cooperation agreements had been signed between species, including an "underground base in the depths of Mars" where there are American astronauts and alien representatives.
Eshed added that President Donald Trump was aware of the extraterrestrials' existence and had been "on the verge of revealing" information but was asked not to in order to prevent "mass hysteria."
President Donald Trump (R-Corrupt)'s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani (R-Feeble) on Tuesday downplayed the severity of COVID-19 while in hospital receiving treatment for the disease.
Giuliani called in to his radio show on 77 WABC, a local channel in New York, from his hospital bed at Georgetown University Medical Center and falsely claimed that "you can overdo the mask" and that the coronavirus is "curable."
Giuliani expressed little regret over dismissing public health guidelines, compared to that of another Trump ally, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R-Tainted), who was hospitalized with COVID-19 in October and said he was "wrong" for not wearing a mask.
Giuliani said also that he admitted himself to the hospital based on Trump's advice, and mentioned that he's getting the same treatment that the president received when he fell ill with the virus in October.
"His doctor sent me here," Giuliani said. "He talked me into it. I didn't really want to go to the hospital, and he said, 'Don't be stupid, you can get it over with in three days if we send you to the hospital.'"
The Arctic region has had its second-warmest year since 1900, continuing a pattern of extreme heat, ice melt and environmental transformation at the top of the world, scientists reported Tuesday.
In the 15th annual Arctic Report Card, released by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), researchers detail the stark ways in which climate change is altering the long-frozen region.
“Taken as a whole, the story is unambiguous,” Alaska-based climate scientist Rick Thoman, one of the report’s editors, said in a statement. “The transformation of the Arctic to a warmer, less frozen and biologically changed region is well underway.”
Among the milestones hit this year was the second-lowest minimum sea ice extent in the satellite record, at 3.74 million square kilometers reached on Sept. 15. That was beaten only by the low in 2012, when a late-season cyclonic storm broke up much of that year’s remaining ice.
The minimum sea ice extent has never risen above its level in 2007 since then.
Forty years ago, a Tibetan monk wandered into the holy Baishiya Karst Cave and stumbled across a jawbone.
The accidental discovery was the beginning of an anthropological mystery, the solution to which has shed new light on humans' most enigmatic ancestor.
Scientists hypothesized that the bone came from a Denisovan, an early human species related to Neanderthals. But Denisovan remains had previously only been found in Siberia's Denisova Cave, more than 1,400 miles away.
Anthropologists couldn't detect any DNA in the jawbone fossil, and without genetic proof, there was no way to be sure who the bone came from.
But this year, researchers returned to Baishiya Karst and were finally able to collect ancient DNA - not from bones, but from the cave floor itself. Their findings, published in the journal Science, showed that the jawbone did indeed come from a Denisovan. The research also revealed that these ancestors thrived in Tibet's harsh, high-altitude environment.
