Mashups From Two Worlds
By DJ Useo
Gree-tings everyone. It's time to interrupt your normal reading again to discuss & listen to mashups. Today I have two completely new mashup albums for you. One is by me & the other is by me, lol. Here's the rub, though. One album is appealing normal mashups with music & singing you're most likely familiar with. Then there's the second album with much more aggressive music for the most part & singing that a tad more 'out there'. So you can enjoy the safe pleasure of your musical comfort zone with mashups like 'Golden Wild Life Years' (David Bowie vs Talking Heads) & 'You Got Another American Idiot Coming' (Judas Priest vs Green Day) or you can challenge your sense with wild ass tunes like 'Sedated Roundabout' (The Ramones vs Yes) & 'Carry On My Wayward Spirit In The Sky' (Kansas vs Norman Greenbaum).
Yes, it's one album for everyone & another album for the more adventurous listeners. The former is '
MASHUPS FOR COOL CATS'
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2011/09/mashups-for-cool-cats-all-new-album.html )
> and the latter is 'INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA 6'
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2011/11/intense-psychedelia-6-all-new-mashups.html ) . It may seem like 6 is a lot of psychedelic mashup albums for just one guy to make, but '
MASHUPS FOR COOL CATS' is actually my 7th general music theme original mashup album. I'm not counting tribute albums, unusual mashup collections, or holiday-themed records. You'll never see me stop posting normal mashup albums, but I never expected to still be releasing intense psychedelic mashup albums. I'd make them just for myself, I'm sure, but it was sheer encouragement from online peeps that got me motivated to post another. It's a great feeling to have y'all ask for more trippy tracks, as well as the regular-type mixes I always give.
One thing I notice about releasing mashups is comments seem to become more & more scarce, while downloads & streamed listen numbers maintain or thrive. I must'a got 7 or 8 comments for the
Loreena McKennitt mashup 9
( www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuUacuXyDDg ) I did, so imagine my surprise when I saw the mirrored links for the mp3 had gone over 8000. Imagine 8000 accompanying comments! Hell, imagine 8000 accompanying dollars! Pardon me a moment while I ponder that.Ahhhhh! J It's funny also, how much the two records I've done have in common. For instance, artists used on both like the Beatles, David Bowie, Yes & T.Rex. Yet, the 2 albums are not the same in the ways that count. I know plenty will love a track from the cool cats album like 'Free Jokerin' (Steve Miller Band vs Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), but I also realize not so many will go for the heavily psychedelic 'I Want To Touch Mirror People' (Love and Rockets vs Catherine Wheel) from the IP6 record. A durn shame, actually, but a phenomena to be expected. I love The Bevis Frond, a great band, but sadly, they're far outsold by, say, Coldplay, who are a very good band.
I had a wonderful time with the covers for each record, too. The cool cats one I actually drew myself with the added joy of colours provided by DJ Petrushka & some prismacolor art pencils. Thanks, Petrushka! Then I had literally hours of fun searching online for suitably trippy animated gifs to be a cover for the intense album. Once I had the final selections I was inordinately fortunate to have the generous assistance of French bootlegger
Chocomang
( chocomang.org/ ). He agreed to add the appropriate cover lettering, & man, did he ever succeed! Thanks,
Chocomang. Here's the
animated front cover
( i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/useo8/DJ%20Useo%20Covers%202/djuseo_ip6gif.gif ) and here's
the animated back cover
( i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/useo8/DJ%20Useo%20Covers%202/djuseo-ip6-back.gif ) .
As if that wasn't cool enough, he did a selection of variants (just like the comic books do) that are even more far out than the main one I chose (I went for one of the tamer ones because I've had complaints before when they're too hard on the eyes, lol). Here's
my actual favorite
( i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/useo8/DJ%20Useo%20Covers%202/djuseo_ip6-6gif.gif ).
I hope you lend an ear to one or both collections, & find favor with them. There's links for just listening, solo track download links, links for the entire album files & even links for just the cover files ( & all are free). If you like any of it, don't send money (unless you want to, lol) - just tell your friends. More great new mashups next Wednesday, here at the home of modern entertainment, Bartcop Entertainment.
Mix Of The Week
wvlfpvp has a swell mashup mix out called 'Princess Spreads A Memetic Virus'.
wvlfpvp says of the mix "It's a new Princess mix, and that means dance-y mashup goodness! I went a bit darker/heavier this time; this is honestly because the heavier dance stuff is what I've really tuned into since the last mix. Enjoy, and shake your ass!"

'Letter Good Time Roll' (Cars vs Pixies) has the Cars' 'let the good times roll' acapella, the Pixies' 'letter to memphis' instrumental, & Negativland samples for added spice. As usual, it's a mashup for demonstration purposes only.
Podgornio, The Mashup Psychic Predicts
On December 3rd 2011, popular San Francisco deejay Nicholas Nockalaus will take offense at the apathy toward his latest mashup, & drop rotten eggs over the entire city from his custom-built Nockalous-copter. What a stinker!

Lady Gaga Buys Costumes
Michael Jackson
Pop star Lady Gaga purchased 55 items belonging to late singer Michael Jackson in a weekend auction that raised more than $5 million, a portion of which will be donated to charity, Julien's Auctions said.
The auction, held in Beverly Hills, showcased 465 lots of items spanning Jackson's career through the years, including costumes and props used on tour and in music videos.
Highlights from the sale included the late singer's "BAD" tour jacket raising $240,000, a white glove selling for $192,000 and one of the singer's Pepsi and Awards jacket garnering more than $68,000, the auction house said in a statement.
Following Sunday's auction, Gaga told her 31 million Twitter followers that "the 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide."

Visits Archie's Riverdale
George Takei
Mr. Sulu in Riverdale? Oh my!
Actor and equal rights advocate George Takei, whose portrayal of the Star Trek character in television and film has made him a science fiction legend, is crossing a new frontier this week by appearing as himself in issue No. 6 of Archie Comics' "Kevin Keller," a series about Riverdale's only gay teenager.
Takei, who is also gay, said his appearance in the issue that is released Wednesday dovetails nicely with his real-life advocacy for equal rights because it helps bring home his message that anyone can aspire to be what they want to be no matter who they are.
"With Archie Comics, it's a fun way and a natural way and an ideal way of advocating happily," Takei said.
Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics' co-chief executive officer, said writer and artist Dan Parent "met George at a convention and asked him if he'd be interested in appearing in the Kevin Keller comic, and being a huge Star Trek fan I flipped when he agreed. Sulu was always my favorite character so I said do whatever it takes to get him in the comic."

Academy Film Tribute
Pedro Almodovar
Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is set to be feted with a retrospective of his work by the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in London, the Academy said on Tuesday.
The December 13 tribute will feature the "Volver" director in conversation with British director Stephen Frears ("The Queen"), British playwright Peter Morgan ("Frost/Nixon") and French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.
Other participants include Almodovar's brother and producer Agustin Almodovar, Spanish film composer Alberto Iglesias and British director Sally Potter.
Almodovar, 63, is known as a significant director in Spain's cultural transition after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975.
Almodovar burst onto the international scene with his 1988 Oscar-nominated film "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." He won a best foreign language Oscar for his 1999 film "All About My Mother" and best original screenplay for 2002's "Talk to Her."

Another Marriage License
Hugh Hefner
Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris are again taking steps toward the altar, more than a year after the centerfold canceled their previous engagement and was branded a "runaway bride" in Playboy.
The couple obtained a marriage license Tuesday at a courthouse in Beverly Hills.
Harris called off the couple's previous engagement in June 2011, prompting Playboy to affix "runaway bride" stickers to an issue introducing her as Mrs. Hefner.
Celebrity website TMZ first reported the couple's license. It says they reunited earlier this year and plan to wed on New Year's Eve.

Hospital News
Frankie Muniz
Former "Malcolm in the Middle" child star Frankie Muniz said on Tuesday he had suffered a mini-stroke, at the age of 26.
"I was in the hospital last Friday. I suffered a 'Mini Stroke', which was not fun at all. Have to start taking care of my body! Getting old!," Muniz said on Twitter.
According to celebrity website TMZ.com, Muniz was taken ill in Arizona last Friday when friends noticed he was having trouble speaking and understanding.
Mini-strokes usually affect those over the age of 55. They are temporary interruptions of blood flow to part of the brain but do not kill brain tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Most Overpaid Actor
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy was once among Hollywood's top box office draws, but he now has the dubious honor of being crowned its most overpaid actor, according to Forbes magazine.
In its annual list, determined by the misalignment between star salaries and their films' box office take, Murphy, once a one-man gold mine with 1980s hits such as "Trading Places" and "Beverly Hills Cop", displaced Drew Barrymore for the top spot.
Weighing box office receipts against paychecks, Forbes calculated that for every dollar Murphy was paid for his last three films, they returned an average of just $2.30 at the box office. Murphy placed second on the list a year ago.
Popular actresses such as Katherine Heigl, and Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock, made the top five, with "returns" ranging from $3.40 to $5.

Wins Bad Sex Fiction Prize
"Infrared"
It's the prize no author wants to win.
Award-winning novelist Nancy Huston won Britain's Bad Sex in Fiction award Tuesday for her novel "Infrared," whose tale of a photographer who takes pictures of her lovers during sex proved too revealing for the judges.
The choice was announced by "Downton Abbey" actress Samantha Bond during a ceremony at the Naval & Military Club in London.
Judges of the tongue-in-cheek prize - which is run by the Literary Review magazine - said they were struck by a description of "flesh, that archaic kingdom that brings forth tears and terrors, nightmares, babies and bedazzlements," and by a long passage that builds to a climax of "undulating space."
She is only the third woman to win the annual Bad Sex prize, founded in 1993 to name and shame authors of "crude, tasteless and ... redundant passages of sexual description in contemporary novels."

London Home Sold
Amy Winehouse
The London home where British
singer Amy Winehouse died has sold for 1.98 million pounds ($3.2
million) at auction, after it failed to attract serious buyers
on the real estate market.
The semi-detached Camden Square house where the musician
died last year at age 27 had remained empty since it was put up
for sale in May for 2.7 million pounds, but continued to draw
flocks of fans paying tribute to the "Back to Black" singer.
Winehouse's family decided early in November to put the
house to auction after "the estate agency route didn't work",
property auctioneer Chris McHugh told Reuters on Tuesday.
Media reports suggested the family had been overwhelmed with
viewing requests from fans, but not real prospective buyers.
"We had probably 50 to 100 viewings and we showed people
around at all times of the day and night," McHugh said.
The 2,500-square feet (230-square-metre) four-storey
property features three bedrooms, a large dressing room, two
bathrooms and a sound-proofed music room and gym.
At an auction held on Monday in Piccadilly, bids started at
1.7 million pounds, reached the 1.8 million guide price and
stopped just short of the 2 million-mark beyond which a 7
percent stamp duty applies on UK home sales.

Love Letters To Auction
Charles Schulz
The late "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz was once so infatuated with a young woman 23 years his junior he sent her dozens of romantic letters and drawings of his beloved cartoon characters. Many of the themes of that correspondence made it into his daily comic strips at the time.
Now those love notes from 1970-1971 are being offered for sale at Sotheby's in New York by the family of Tracey Claudius, who the auction house says is ill at her home near Philadelphia. It's estimated the notes will fetch $250,000 to $350,000 at the Dec. 14 auction.
Claudius met the cartoonist on March 16, 1970, while accompanying a friend on an interview assignment. She ostensibly came along as a photographer but afterward admitted in a letter to Schulz that it was a chance for her to meet her idol and thank him "for all the enjoyment Charlie Brown and that 'stupid beagle' provide me."
She was 25. The married Schulz was 48. His comic strip ran for nearly half a century.
There are 44 letters totaling 56 pages, including 22 original drawings of some of the characters, primarily Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Lucy. Many are signed "Sparky," Schulz nickname.

TV Land Sitcom Pilot
Michael Richards
TV Land says it has cast "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards in a pilot for a prospective new sitcom.
The series, "Giant Baby," also would feature fellow "Cheers" alums Kirstie Alley and Rhea Perlman.
"Giant Baby" focuses on Broadway star Maddie Banks, played by Alley. Richards plays her limo driver while Perlman plays her assistant.
This would be Richards' first regular series role since his short-lived NBC sitcom aired in 2000. Before that, he played Jerry Seinfeld's kookie neighbor Cosmo Kramer on the wildly popular "Seinfeld" series.

Small Demons
Author Jennifer Gilmore is reading a biography of the late David Foster Wallace. She's curious about his most famous book, the novel "Infinite Jest," and wants to poke around on the Internet to learn more.
Her destination is Small Demons, an encyclopedia and "Storyverse" that catalogues names, places, songs, products and other categories for thousands of books.
Officially launched in August, Small Demons is the book world's latest mind game and guilty pleasure and a proving ground that everything really is connected. You can find out how many books mention the Beatles or the Pacific Ocean or Rice Krispies. You can find answers to questions you never meant to ask, like whether writers favor Marlboros or Camels (Camels have the edge, 85-65), or which brands of cold medicine are cited in EL James' "Fifty Shades of Grey" (NyQuil, Advil, Tylenol).
Small Demons founder Valla Vakili, a former Yahoo executive, dates the idea back to 2005, November to be exact. He read Jean-Claude Izzo's novel "Total Chaos" and became curious about the book's setting, in Marseille. The main character was a French police officer with a taste for malt whiskey and jazz and blues.
The company's name, which could be mistaken for a New Wave band, is itself a game of free association. Vakili was inspired in part by a Jorge Luis Borges passage declaring that history "is the handwriting produced by a Minor god in order to communicate with a Demon." As Vakili sees it, "minor Gods" are writers, and demons the passion to read and to write. And so, "Small Demons," or, as Vakili likes to joke, the devil is in the details.
