Ed Asner’s Holiday Event
‘It’s A Wonderful Life’
Pete Davidson is taking on an iconic film character, James Stewart’s George Bailey. The Saturday Night Live actor and Maude Apatow (Euphoria), who recently starred together in The King of Staten Island, are reuniting for Ed Asner’s one-night-only live virtual celebrity table read of the 1946 holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life, in which Aparow will portray Violet Bick. They join an all-star cast that includes Mia Farrow, Ellie Kemper, Carol Kane, Ed Begley Jr., Diedrich Bader, Bill Pullman, Richard Kind, B.D. Wong, and Michael Shannon for the holiday event, slated for Sunday, December 13, 2020, 5:00 PM PT. Proceeds will benefit The Ed Asner Family Center, dedicated to promoting mental health and enrichment programs to special needs children and their families.
“We are so thrilled to have Pete reenact the role of George in It’s a Wonderful Life with his talented wit and clever vocalizations. And we look forward to having Maude join the cast as Violet with her creative flair. Please join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity to snuggle up on your couch and experience this all-star cast virtual table read from the comfort of your own home, while helping to raise money for The Ed Asner Family Center. It will be a very meaningful night!” said Matthew Asner, Co-Founder/President/CEO of The Ed Asner Family Center.
The re-imagined virtual annual gala will also honor Jeffrey Frost, President of Sony Pictures Television, as a champion of an inclusive Hollywood and ardent supporter of individuals with special needs, with Emmy-winning producer Norman Lear, who is based at Sony TV, presenting the award. Hosted by Tom Bergeron, the table read will be directed by Victor Nelli.

Suit Settled
Seth Rich
Fox Rupert News has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of Seth Rich, the slain Democratic National Committee staffer who became the center of right-wing conspiracies about hacked emails.
Joel and Mary Rich filed the suit over a May 2017 story that claimed their son had leaked thousands of DNC emails to Wikileaks before his death. Fox News later retracted the story, saying it was “not initially subjected to [a] high degree of editorial scrutiny.”
In a statement, Joel and Mary Rich said they were pleased by the settlement, and said they hoped the media would exercise greater caution in the future.
“The settlement with Fox News closes another chapter in our efforts to mourn the murder of our beloved Seth, whom we miss every single day,” they said. “It allows us to move on from the litigation we initiated in response to Fox News’ May 2017 article and televised statements concerning Seth’s murder. We are pleased with the settlement of this matter and sincerely hope that the media will take genuine caution in the future.”
The retraction was believed to be one of the first made of a Fox Rupert News story.

Notebooks Stolen
Charles Darwin
Two of Charles Darwin’s notebooks have been declared stolen, almost 20 years after they were first reported missing from Cambridge University Library.
Cambridgeshire Police are now investigating the suspected theft of the small red-leather-bound manuscripts, one of which contains the naturalist’s famous Tree of Life drawing on the relationship between species.
The notebooks, which are worth millions of pounds, were last seen in November 2000, when they were taken to a temporary studio in the library’s grounds to be photographed.
Two months later, a routine check found they were missing. However, librarians at the time assumed they had just been misplaced in the library, whose shelves run to a total of 210 km, roughly the distance between Cambridge and Southampton.
Dr Jessica Gardner, who has been the director of library services since 2017, now believes otherwise, telling BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that these notebooks have probably been stolen.”

Netflix Removes ‘Chappelle’s Show’
Dave Chappelle
Dave Chappelle had made it clear that he did not approve of ViacomCBS licensing his Comedy Central series, Chappelle’s Show, without paying him a dime. The comedian spoke about it during his recent Saturday Night Live monologue, and now he has done something about it.
In a video, titled Unforgiven, which was posted on Instagram this morning, Chappelle says that he had asked Netflix, where he has a deal for standup specials, to take Chappelle’s Show, which the streamer had licensed on a non-exclusive basis, off the service.
Netflix has honored Chappelle’s request, and removed the show overnight last night, a rep for the streamer confirmed to Deadline. The show began streaming on Netflix in the U.S. on Nov. 1. Chappelle’s Show, owned by ViacomCBS, is still available on the company’s Comedy Central and CBS All Access outlets and was also recently licensed by HBO Max. Companies that license a program pay the seller who, in turn, has to compensate the creatives on the show.
“People think I made a lot of money from Chappelle’s Show,” Chappelle says in the video, filmed during a recent standup set, in which he reminisces about his comedy career. “When I left that show I never got paid. They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal ‘cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either. That’s why I like working for Netflix. I like working for Netflix because when all those bad things happened to me, that company didn’t even exist. And when I found out they were streaming Chappelle’s Show, I was furious. How could they not– how could they not know? So you know what I did? I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better. That’s why I f*ck with Netflix. Because they paid me my money, they do what they say they’re going to do, and they went above and beyond what you could expect from a businessman. They did something just because they thought that I might think that they were wrong. And I do — I think that if you are f*cking streaming that show you’re fencing stolen goods.”
Chappelle repeated his appeal to fans, which he also made on SNL earlier this month. “So I’m not going to the agents, I’m coming to my real boss — I’m coming to you. I’m begging you — if you ever liked me, if you ever think there was anything worthwhile about me, I’m begging you, please don’t watch that show. I’m not asking you to boycott any network — boycott me. Boycott Chappelle’s Show. Do not watch it unless they pay me.”

Union-Busting Pinkerton Spies
Amazon
Amazon is hiring detectives from the notorious Pinkerton agency to spy on warehouse workers and monitor them for labor unionization efforts, according to a Monday Motherboard report.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to the outlet that Amazon has indeed recruited operatives from Pinkerton, the spy agency that has a centuries-long history of upending worker union activities, among other services.
Per Motherboard, Pinkerton spies were "inserted" into a warehouse in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2019 to look into an allegation that job candidates were being coached for job interviews.
Amazon spokesperson Lisa Levandowski told Business Insider that the firm partners with Pinkerton to "secure high-value shipments in transit," not to gather intelligence on warehouse workers, and that all activities are "fully in line with local laws."
Motherboard obtained internal emails written by members of Amazon's Global Security Operations Center in 2019. The leaked documents reportedly show Amazon analysts tracking union organizing activity of workers in Europe, with members having the ability to stay updated on labor organizing efforts conducted at warehouses, right down to the date, time, location, and the number of workers involved.

‘Happening Right Now’
Saltwater Intrusion
Four Native American tribes on Louisiana’s Gulf Coast requested United Nations assistance this year to force action by the U.S. government on invading salt. Their formal complaint cited “climate-forced displacement’’ and said saltwater had poisoned their land, their crops and their medicinal plants.
“That strips us of not only being able to generate an income to provide for ourselves, it also strips us of our ability to feed ourselves healthy,” Shirell Parfait-Dardar, chief of the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw, said in an interview.
The tribes’ plight offers an extreme example of a lesser-known but fast-growing impact in the climate crisis: saltwater intrusion.
The landward movement of seawater threatens drinking water supplies, coastal farming and coastal ecosystems. Rising seas, more frequent storms, higher tides, drought and the pressure of pumping for drinking water are combining to accelerate the salt invasion.
New scientific research along the East Coast and in California shows measurable and sometimes startling change, much of it from saltwater’s unseen advance beneath the surface. The threat is widespread; roughly 40% of Americans live in coastal counties, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
