Does anyone know anything about the new Google Chromebooks?
My laptop is damn near a museum piece (it has a floppy drive), and both of my desk tops are from the last century.
I'm itching to get modern, but, as usual, I hate to spend more than necessary.
Any thoughts?
Ecology Program
Robert Redford
A California college is teaming up with Robert Redford to create a program where students can combine environmental studies with media and liberal arts.
The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday that Pitzer College, one of the seven Claremont Colleges, is creating the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability with a $10 million gift from Nicholas and Susan Pritzker, parents of a Pitzer graduate who support environmental causes.
Redford is a trustee of the college and serves as its special adviser on the environment.
The program's aim is to create environmental communicators and advocates. Its centerpiece will be a 12-acre coastal sage scrub ecosystem, an endangered habitat where students can study problems and come up with solutions.

Rock Stars Pay For Tapestry
Vaclav Havel
Rock stars Bono, The Edge, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Yoko Ono Lennon have covered the cost of a tapestry that will be unveiled next month to honor Vaclav Havel at Prague's international airport, that has been renamed to honor the late Czech president.
The airport says the tapestry, which has been designed by the Czech-born New York-based artist Petr Sis, will be unveiled at a ceremony on Dec. 9.
The musicians donated a total of 1.5 million koruna ($76,000) to cover the project proposed by Bill Shipsey, the founder of Art for Amnesty, a project of artists supporting the Amnesty International.
Havel was the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four decades of communist rule before becoming the country's president.

Starz Cancels
'Boss'
Starz television network has decided not to give Kelsey Grammar another term as mayor of Chicago.
The cable network said Tuesday that it was canceling the drama "Boss" after two seasons. The show premiered to critical acclaim, starring Grammar as tyrannical Chicago mayor Tom Kane. The role earned Grammar a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama earlier this year.
Starz says in a statement that although the network is proud of the show, it has "made the difficult decision to not proceed with 'Boss.'" The move was a flip-flop for Starz, which renewed the show for a second season even before its first season began.
"Boss" also stars Martin Donovan, Connie Nielsen and Kathleen Robertson. Farhad Safinia is the show's creator and executive producer.

Sue Moviemakers Over Merchandizing
Tolkien Heirs
The heirs of late author J.R.R. Tolkien are suing the producers of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movie trilogies over alleged exploitative merchandizing.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, comes a week before the premiere of the "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in Wellington. The opening film in the trilogy hits theaters worldwide next month.
The estate of Tolkien is upset at what it calls "morally questionable" digital marketing including an online slot machine, according to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. The Tolkien estate is seeking $80 million from Warner Bros., its New Line subsidiary and rights holder Saul Zaentz Co.
Tolkien's family contends a merchandizing agreement extends only to tangible products such as figurines and clothing and not to electronic rights.
The family says lengthy discussions with the producers over the disagreement proved fruitless and that it fears the scope of online merchandizing will only increase with the release of the 'Hobbit' movies.

Kevin Clash
Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from "Sesame Street" on Tuesday amid allegations he sexually abused underage boys, bringing an end to a 28-year career in which he turned the furry red monster into one of the most beloved - and lucrative - characters on TV and in toy stores.
His departure came as a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued Clash for more than $5 million Tuesday, accusing the actor of engaging in sexual behavior with him when he was 15. Singleton charged that Clash made a habit of trolling gay chat lines for underage boys and meeting them for sex.
It was the second such allegation in just over a week. On Nov. 12, a man in his 20s said he had sex with Clash at age 16. A day later, though, the young man recanted, saying their relationship was adult and consensual.
Clash was a young puppeteer at "Sesame Street" in the mid-1980s when was assigned a little-used puppet now known as Elmo and turned him into a star, creating his high-pitched voice and child-like personality. Clash also served as the show's senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain, winning 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy.

Jury Deliberating
Amy Locane-Bovenizer
A former "Melrose Place" actress was driving drunk when her speeding SUV plowed into a turning car, killing a woman, but her lawyer has tried to convince a jury that others are to blame for the fatal crash and that what happened was an accident, not a crime.
Jury deliberations began Tuesday afternoon in state Superior Court in the aggravated manslaughter trial of Amy Locane-Bovenizer, 40, whose blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit when the crash occurred on a dark two-lane road in central New Jersey in 2010.
The defense agreed that Locane-Bovenizer was driving under the influence of alcohol. But her attorney sought to shift blame for the crash to a third motorist whose car she had rear-ended and who had been pursuing the actress - and also to the husband of the car accident victim for making what witnesses said was a slow, deliberate turn into his driveway.
Helene Seeman was killed in the crash, and her husband, Fred Seeman, was seriously injured.
Locane-Bovenizer faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of aggravated manslaughter and assault-by-auto charges. Separate motor vehicle counts related to her drunken driving are to be heard in a separate case. She did not testify during the trial.

Former Model Wins Suit
'Price is Right'
Jurors awarded nearly $777,000 Tuesday to a former "The Price is Right" model who claimed she was discriminated against by producers because of her pregnancy.
Brandi Cochran, 41, said she was rejected by the game show's producers when she tried to return to work in early 2010 after taking maternity leave.
The Superior Court jury determined her pregnancy was the reason she wasn't rehired and awarded Cochran $776,944 in the suit against producers FremantleMedia North America and The Price is Right Productions.
A second phase of the trial will determine whether Cochran should be awarded punitive damages. Cochran's attorneys had asked for more than $8 million, City News Service reported.

Warrantless Access
E-mail
A Senate proposal touted as protecting Americans' e-mail privacy has been quietly rewritten, giving government agencies more surveillance power than they possess under current law.
CNET has learned that Patrick Leahy, the influential Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, has dramatically reshaped his legislation in response to law enforcement concerns. A vote on his bill, which now authorizes warrantless access to Americans' e-mail, is scheduled for next week.
Leahy's rewritten bill would allow more than 22 agencies -- including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Communications Commission -- to access Americans' e-mail, Google Docs files, Facebook wall posts, and Twitter direct messages without a search warrant. It also would give the FBI and Homeland Security more authority, in some circumstances, to gain full access to Internet accounts without notifying either the owner or a judge.
It's an abrupt departure from Leahy's earlier approach, which required police to obtain a search warrant backed by probable cause before they could read the contents of e-mail or other communications. The Vermont Democrat boasted last year that his bill "provides enhanced privacy protections for American consumers by... requiring that the government obtain a search warrant."
This is a bitter setback for Internet companies and a liberal-conservative-libertarian coalition, which had hoped to convince Congress to update the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act to protect documents stored in the cloud. Leahy glued those changes onto an unrelated privacy-related bill supported by Netflix.

Ancient Petroglyphs Stolen
California
Four petroglyphs carved into volcanic rock more than 3,500 years ago have been hacked out and stolen by thieves who also damaged other engravings at a historic site in California, U.S. authorities said on Tuesday.
The petroglyphs in the Volcanic Tablelands east of Yosemite represented a "pristine example of Great Basin rock art" that portrayed the daily hunter-gatherer activities that took place in the area, the Bureau of Land Management said.
It was not immediately clear when the petroglyphs, or rock engravings, were removed from the site near California's border with Nevada. A volunteer monitor first spotted the damage on October 31, bureau spokesman David Christy said.
The Volcanic Tablelands are described by the Bureau of Land Management as a vast volcanic landscape formed more than 700,000 years ago by materials spewing from the Long Valley caldera to the northwest.
The high-desert site and its volcanic rock outcroppings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, protected under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and still used by local Paiute Indians for ceremonies.

In Memory
Bonita Lynn Fields Elder
Former Mouseketeer Bonita Lynn Fields Elder, an agile dancer who showcased those skills on the 1950s children's show "The Mickey Mouse Club" and later performed on Broadway, has died in Indiana at age 68.
Her cousin Robbin Myers said Tuesday that Elder died Saturday at a Richmond hospital following a two-year battle with throat cancer.
Elder had been living in Winchester after moving back to eastern Indiana a few years ago to care for her ailing, now-deceased mother.
She was 12 in 1957, when her dancing abilities helped her win a slot on the third season of "The Mickey Mouse Club." She auditioned in California, where her family had moved from Indiana when she was 9.
Elder always went by the name Lynn, but she adopted the stage name "Bonnie" - a shortened version of her real first name - at the suggestion of the show's producers because there was already a cast member, a boy, with the first name Lynn, her cousin said.
Myers, who now lives in DeBary, Fla., said she and Elder were a year apart and grew up together in Richmond until Elder's family moved to Granada Hills, Calif. It was exciting when Elder was cast in the nationally broadcast show only a few years later, she said.
According to Elder's obituary posted online by Doan & Mills Funeral Home in Richmond, she landed bit parts in several 1960s movies, including "Angel in My Pocket" with Andy Griffith and "Bye Bye Birdie" with Ann-Margret. She later appeared as a dancer on television shows and on Broadway before opening a dance studio in Santa Monica, Calif.
According to the website of The Original Mickey Mouse Club Show, Elder appeared in 1980 on a televised program marking the 25th anniversary of "The Mickey Mouse Club." From 1981 to 1985, she took part in live Mouseketeer reunion shows at Disneyland.
Elder was born in Walterboro, S.C., but her family moved to Richmond when she was 3 months old. She was divorced and had no children, her cousin said.
