Chocomang's Reggae Mashup Collection Hits The Net!

By DJ Useo

The famous Parisian bootlegger Chocomang recently helmed a very successful Reggae mashup collection. My Bartcop E article on it "12 Reggae Mashups Album" is here ( www.suprmchaos.com/bcEnt-Wed-121317.index.html ) The tunes included are highly addictive, & Chocomang felt the drive enough to surge forward & complete a finest kind Reggae mashup album all on his own. "Chocomang's Reggae Mashup Collection" ( chocomang.org/Albums/ChocomangsReggaeCollection/ ) . We all surely feel the benefit. ( Those of us who listen, that is. ) I think most of us will find the included blends are the "bee's knees".

The fourteen mixes on this collection bring together the best Reggae artists together with various other style artists in such a manner that they sound like they began this way. Chocomang has vast experience, & extensive skills & can work with any style. His handling of production has proved time & again through his posts how much he can thrill the listeners. Once you discover the gems on this Reggae album, you'd be well advised to head over to his site where you can access almost 200 incredible Chocomang mashups ( chocomang.org/mashup/index_en.htm ) .

This set contains pairings such as Bob Marley vs the Proclaimers, Rootical Record Crew vs The Smiths, LionRiddims vs Evanescence, & so very many more. Reggae mashups remain among the more popular styles, yet also are amidst the scarcest of posted blends. This release from Chocomang displays again his finely-honed sense of what people want to hear in a mashup. Try dropping a few of these tracks onto your music app of choice for your friends, & you'll find some very contented company.

Plenty more Chocomang mashups are coming soon on new Audioboots ( audioboots.com ) mashup comps, & his single posts. I think we all owe him a big debt for creating, & sharing his love of mixing. For certainly, he could easily be doing crossword puzzles, or any of a number of alternate activities. I know one bootlegger who quit posting, & got into knitting instead. ( & not mashup knitting, either ) The album is "no-charge", so you can have it right now for the cost of a few right-clicks. Zip file mirror links are here ( chocomang.org/Albums/ChocomangsReggaeCollection/ )

I hope to feature a new mashup album next week. Cross your fingers, & we'll cross the music. Bye for now.

Trivia Question of the Day

The colloquial name of the Queensboro Bridge in New York City provides the title of a song Simon and Garfunkel performed at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. What is the title of this groovy hit?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

The ridges on the edges of dimes and quarters are called reeds. There are 119 reeds on a quarter. How many reeds are there on a dime?

       118 Reeds                                                      Source

In numismatics, reeded edges are often referred to as "ridged" or "grooved" (US usage), or "milled" (UK usage). Some coins, such as United States quarters and dimes, 1 euro, Australian 5, 10, 20 cents, 1 and 2 dollars, as well many other current coins, have reeded edges. One reason for having reeded edges was to prevent counterfeiting. Some gold and silver coins were reeded to discourage clipping, i.e. scraping off the precious metals from the edge of the coin, to maintain its stated value in precious metal. Another benefit of certain coins having reeded edges is that it helps enable different coin denominations to be easily identified and distinguished from each other by sense of touch alone.

Value 0.10 U.S. dollar
Mass 2.268 g (0.0729 troy oz)
Diameter 17.91 mm (0.705 in)
Thickness 1.35 mm (0.053 in)
Edge 118 reeds        Source

Why Do Coins Have Ridges? | Mental Floss

Mark. was first, and correct, with:
   118 reeds.

Dave wrote:
   118. At the beginning of the United States Mint, the more valuable coins were actually cast in gold or silver. People soon figured out they could file down the edges, and collect the valuable shavings, without anybody noticing. So the reeds were added to make it obvious that the edges were filed down. The reeds also made counterfeiting coins more difficult.

Alan J answered:
   118.

I have an ancestor who used to counterfeit silver dollars back in the early 1800's. He was so good that people preferred his coins over the government minted. His coins contained more silver. I'd tell you his name but I'm having a bout of CRS at the moment.

Anecdotes

April Fools Day

• Someone at Google Maps has a sense of humor. Close to April Fools Day, an editor of the website Nevada Thunder asked it for directions from Chicago, Illinois to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Step 20 said, "Swim across the Atlantic Ocean: 3,462 mi."

Audiences

• British comedian David O'Doherty once performed in front of 40 people, 20 of whom were members of the Active Elderly Association, which meant that much of his audience were in their eighties. Unfortunately, his act was not meant for people in their eighties, so he was performing routines about iPhones and about spying on a naked lady doing aerobics when he was 12 years old. During intermission, he figured that all the old people would leave, but they were still present when he walked out for the second half of his act. He asked them, "Why are you still here?" One of the old people replied, "The bus doesn't come to get us until 11." He also used to do readings of children's books in libraries. Ten minutes after he began reading one book, a small boy raised his hand and asked, "Does this get good soon?" Mr.O'Doherty says, "It was so profound. How many times - not just at a gig, but in a relationship or at a family get-together - have you wanted to raise your hand and ask that?"

• Stand-up comedian Kristen Schaal used to practice her act in front of an unusual audience: the cows on the Colorado farm where she grew up. She says, "I had time on my hands. I would perform in front of the cows. They never mooed. They never heckled. They were very polite. That's how I learned to not expect anything from an audience." Despite its being unusual, this kind of audience is good practice for real audiences, as Ms. Schaal points out, "I went back home recently, and I looked at the cows again and thought, 'God, they have the same expression as audiences.' Just expectant - they want something but they're just, like, waiting. And they have no idea what they're waiting for. After that training, I was set."

• Comedian Larry Storch was doing stand-up comedy in Detroit at a time when Soupy Sales was doing a Detroit children's show that was widely watched by adults. Mr. Storch heard that a local TV celebrity was in the audience, and he thought that the audience would like to know that, so he announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, there's a guy named Soupy Sales in the audience who you might know and he's sitting right over there. Let's say hello." Big mistake. The audience mobbed Soupy Sales, leaving nobody to listen to Mr. Storch's act. Mr. Storch says, "It was embarrassing. They left the joint empty."

• Early in his career, British comedian Danny La Rue appeared in a nightclub where the audience sat quietly throughout his performance. He thought that he had bombed completely and that his career was over, until he was informed that previously the audience had always ignored whatever comedian was performing so that they could talk amongst themselves. Getting the audience to listen to his performance was a tremendous achievement, and Mr. La Rue was on his way to a very highly paid career as a comedian.

• Fred Weintraub owned the Bitter End, a club where many comedians plied their art and became famous. He listened to the audience and let its reaction decide whether he should keep an act. If the audience hated an act, he kept it. If the audience loved an act, he kept it. If the audience members said after a performance, "That's a nice act," he dropped that act. According to Mr. Weintraub, the one thing he did not want was for an audience to be indifferent.

Largest US Newspaper Chain

GateHouse & Gannett

GateHouse closed its $1.1 billion takeover of USA Today publisher Gannett, becoming the country's largest newspaper company by far and pledging significant cost cuts at a time when print publications are in precipitous decline.

The merger brings together about 260 daily papers, including the Arizona Republic, the Providence Journal and the Austin American-Statesman, as well as hundreds of weeklies.

In an interview with The Associated Press, executives of the combined company, which will keep the Gannett name, acknowledged there will be layoffs -- the company has committed to cutting $300 million in annual costs.

Unite With Michael McDonald

Doobie Brothers

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees The Doobie Brothers are joining with singer and songwriter Michael McDonald for a 50th anniversary tour next year.

McDonald, who sang with the band starting in 1975 before starting his own solo career, surprised fans at The Doobie Brothers concert with a performance of "Takin' it to the Streets" on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Ryman Auditorium.

Formed in Northern California, the group featured harmonies backed by the finger-picking style of guitarist Patrick Simmons paired with the R&B guitar playing by Tom Johnston, singing lead. They had hits with "Listen to the Music," "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove."

They earned two Grammys with McDonald for "What a Fool Believes" and "Minute By Minute." The tour will begin June 9 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Studio Head Wanted Julia Roberts

Harriet Tubman

Producer and screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard has been trying to make a movie about Harriet Tubman for 25 years, going all the way back to his first days in the entertainment industry. That project, director Kasi Lemmons' Harriet, has now finally been finished, but as Howard explains in an L.A. Times piece and an essay for Focus Features' website, the reason it took that long is because Hollywood simply wasn't ready for a movie about Harriet Tubman that treats her more like an "action figure" than a "history lesson." Also, as reflected in one stunning anecdote from Howard's journey to make this film, Hollywood has a bad tendency to be both pretty stupid and pretty racist.

As the story goes, Howard wrote a very highly-regarded script for his Harriet Tubman movie in 1994, and at some point it landed on the desk of a "then-president of a studio sub-label" (so, some big-shot movie studio exec). Howard says the president loved the script, but suggested that they "get Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman." Then, after being informed that the real Harriet Tubman was a Black woman, the president responded, "That was so long ago, no one will know that."

It's the kind of showbiz story that is both unbelievable and extremely believable, and while it's easy to look at something so absurd and say "wow, Hollywood sure was dumb back then," it seems safe to assume things just as dumb-or dumber-happen on a regular basis in the entertainment industry. Either way, Howard says that the climate in Hollywood has changed since then, partially thanks to the success of 12 Years A Slave and Black Panther. Really, his whole story of how he fought for two decades to make this one movie (in between writing other big movies like Remember The Titans and Ali) is worth reading, even beyond the fact that some rich Hollywood executive once suggested getting Julia Roberts (of all white people!) to play Harriet Tubman.

Electrician Hoarded Art

Pablo Picasso

A French court on Tuesday confirmed the two-year suspended jail terms given to Pablo Picasso's former electrician and his wife, who hoarded 271 of the great painter's works in a garage for four decades.

The verdict by the Lyon court is the latest twist in a decade-long legal saga, which took the couple, who claim the works were a gift, all the way to France's top appeals court.

Pierre and Danielle Le Guennec were first given two-year suspended terms in 2015 after being convicted of possession of stolen goods over the huge trove of works by Picasso, including nine rare Cubist collages and a work from his famous Blue Period.

That verdict was upheld in 2016 by a higher court but then quashed by the Cour de Cassation, which ordered a retrial.

Sweden Drops Investigation

Julian Assange

Sweden on Tuesday dropped its investigation into an alleged rape by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is currently in prison in Britain, because too much time has elapsed since the accusation was made over nine years ago.

Assange, who is battling an extradition attempt by the U.S. so he can face spying charges related to his WikiLeaks work, has always denied the allegations made against him during a visit to Stockholm in August 2010.

The decision follows a ruling in June by a Swedish court that Assange should not be detained. Two months earlier, Assange was evicted from the Ecuador Embassy in London where he had been holed up for nearly seven years. He was immediately arrested and is currently serving a 50-week sentence in Britain for jumping bail in 2012.

Ecuador withdrew Assange's asylum status in April and Assange was arrested by British police. He was sentenced in May to 50 weeks in prison for jumping bail in 2012. He remains in prison after authorities ruled he was a flight risk and faces an extradition hearing next year to the U.S. to face spying charges.

Most Detailed Simulation of the Universe

Physicists

The formation of galaxies is a complex dance between matter and energy, occurring on a stage of cosmic proportions and spanning billions of years. How the diversity of structured and dynamic galaxies we observe today arose from the fiery chaos of the Big Bang remains one of the most difficult unsolved puzzles of cosmology.

In search of answers, an international team of scientists has created the most detailed large-scale model of the universe to date, a simulation they call TNG50. Their virtual universe, some 230 million light-years wide, contains tens of thousands of evolving galaxies with levels of detail previously seen only in single-galaxy models. The simulation tracked more than 20 billion particles representing dark matter, gases, stars and supermassive black holes, over a 13.8-billion-year period.

The unprecedented resolution and scale allowed the researchers to gather key insights into our own universe's past, revealing how various oddly shaped galaxies morphed themselves into being and how stellar explosions and black holes triggered this galactic evolution. Their results are published in two articles to be featured in the December 2019 issue of the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The model's attention to detail comes at some cost. The simulation required 16,000 processor cores of the Hazel Hen supercomputer in Stuttgart, Germany, running continuously for more than a year. The same calculation would take a single processor system 15,000 years to compute. Despite being one of the most computationally heavy astrophysical simulations in history, the researchers believe their investment has paid off.
