HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW

November 19, 2002

One day after Iraq's parliament rejected the terms of the Security Council resolution calling for resumed weapons inspections, a letter from Iraqi foreign minister Naji Sabri agreeing to the demands was delivered to the United Nations. The letter was somewhat hostile, referring to the Americans and the British as a "gang of evil," and it declared that the Security Council "has now been transformed into a kitchen house for big power bargaining, providing cover for war, destruction, blockades, and starvation to be inflicted on peoples." The letter also contained the following proverb: "He who remains silent in the defense of truth is a dumb devil."

Al-Jazeera television received a new audiotape from Osama bin Laden in which he threatened more attacks on citizens of countries supporting the United States; Bin Laden referred to George W. Bush as "the pharaoh of the time" and to the Bush Administration as a "gang of butchers."

A German prosecutor agreed to return the brain of Ulrike Meinhoff, the cofounder of the Red Army Faction, to her family. A certain Dr. Bernard Bogarts was believed to be in possession of the brain, which was removed from Meinhoff's body in 1976 after she committed suicide; Dr. Bogarts has claimed that the brain exhibits "pathological modifications" that might explain Meinhoff's violent behavior. Two other Red Army Faction brains were also said to be missing.

Jiang Zemin resigned as head of the Communist Party of China and was replaced by Hu Jintao, who is best known for imposing martial law in Tibet in 1989.

A psychiatric evaluation was ordered for Slobodan Milosevic, whose ill-health has repeatedly delayed his genocide trial.

Israelis and Palestinians continued to slaughter one another.

A group of medical experts estimated that 500,000 people, mostly civilians, would probably die as a result of an American invasion of Iraq.

President Bush was asked what would constitute a "material breach" of the new Security Council resolution on Iraq: "Zero tolerance," Bush replied. "About as plain as I can make it."

Dope Box Fails to Sell at Auction

John Lennon

Former Beatle John Lennon's hand-written lyrics for his 1974 song "Steel and Glass" sold at auction for $23,700 in London Tuesday.

But an ornate box he used to store his marijuana failed to fetch its $39,500 reserve price, after bidding ended at $23,700.

Auction house Cooper Owen said a self-portrait doodle by Lennon featuring a Hitler look-a-like selling "Death" cigarettes, drawn while he was trying to quit smoking, sold for $11,060, $4,740 above its estimate.

A signed 1959 job card of Lennon's, detailing him as unsuitable for a job at a waterworks, went for $10,270.

Ends Afghan U.N. Peace Visit

Muhammad Ali

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali urged Afghans Tuesday to rely on their faith to help them through difficult times as he wrapped up a three-day visit in his role of U.N. peace messenger.

"Like myself, I know that you will succeed... have faith and be a good Muslim. Your faith will help you through the most difficult days," Ali told young Afghans in a letter.

Ali was sent to Kabul by the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Program (WFP) to draw global attention to the plight of Afghans following more than two decades of war.

Afghans revere Ali for his long success in boxing, and his picture hangs in clubs devoted to the sport across the nation.

The 60-year-old American boxer met President Hamid Karzai, visited a UNICEF-funded school for girls, a WFP subsidized bakery for women, and a boxing club during his stay in Kabul.

Artist's Estate Sues Disney

Mark Waters

An artist's estate sued Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday, claiming the company stole his vision for a theme park and turned it into Epcot Center.

Mark Waters' 1961 painting for Miniature World, based on a U.S. Air Force officer's concept, bears striking similarities to Disney's Epcot, which opened in 1982. Both parks have hourglass shapes, large spheres at their entrances and a lake surrounded by pavilions evoking different countries.

According to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court, Lt. Col. Robert M. Jaffray met Waters in Hawaii. Jaffray took the painting to Disney officials in 1963, only to have the company turn down his pitch.

But in 1979, Disney unveiled its plans for Epcot — and they looked much like Waters' painting.

"We believe that Disney will now have to deal with this case straight up," said John Stemberger, the attorney representing the estate of Waters, who died in 1997.

Memorabilia Has New Home

Frank Sinatra Hall

On Monday, the University of Southern California unveiled its newly dedicated Frank Sinatra Hall, prompted by a gift from Sinatra's daughters, who also loaned the school the largest collection of memorabilia ever assembled to mark the career of the iconic American entertainer, who died in 1998.

The collection, on display after a year-and-a-half of archival scouring of Tina and Nancy's belongings, includes Sinatra's gold records, his Congressional Gold Medal, the Oscar he won for his breakout film role as Angelo Maggio in 1953's "From Here to Eternity" and a signature fedora.

Sinatra's first wife and the mother of his children, Nancy Barbato Sinatra, attended the USC ceremony as did jazz impresario Quincy Jones, a longtime friend and collaborator.

Hometown Museum in Smithfield, N.C.

Ava Gardner

Ava Lavinia Gardner, the barefoot farmer's daughter who grew up to be a Hollywood siren, was born and bred just outside this small tobacco-growing North Carolina community, and nobody here has ever forgotten it.

About 20 years ago, a local Ava-boosting newspaper columnist teamed up with an Ava-memorabilia collector in Florida. The eventual result was a small but surprisingly well-attended museum on an old-fashioned main street dedicated to the star of such films as "Show Boat" in 1951 and "Night of the Iguana" in 1964.

Docents at the Ava Gardner population 12,000, say they get up to 1,400 visitors a month, some from as far away as Europe. They gawk at memorabilia including coffee mugs bearing pictures of the Welsh corgis that Gardner adored and purchase such souvenirs as Ava screensavers, Ava refrigerator magnet cheesecake photos, and a small towel that quotes her as saying, "When I lose my temper, honey, you can't find it anyplace."

Gardner was born on Christmas Eve 1922 in a rural area known as Grabtown just east of Smithfield, 28 miles southeast of Raleigh. Her tenant-farming family endured several financial setbacks and moved around a lot, but she considered Smithfield home.

Although she spent most of her adult life in Spain and London, she was buried in Smithfield after her death on Jan. 25, 1990, at age 67.

Too Much Stress

Russell Crowe

Hollywood star Russell Crowe, reportedly involved in a London restaurant brawl last week, says he has been under a "massive level of stress" and is heading back to Australia to be with his father and girlfriend.

Crowe's band 30 Odd Foot Of Grunt has also canceled a U.S. tour to allow band members and crew to spend "the Australian summer with their family and loved ones."

In a statement posted on the band's Web site www.gruntland.com/tofog.htm, Crowe said his father would begin a series of operations on his wrists for carpal tunnel syndrome in December and he wanted to be with him as he recuperates.

In his message Crowe also declared his love for Australian girlfriend Danielle Spencer and his desire to spend more time with her.

"Dani has been very patient with all of the speculations of the past year or so which I thank her for. I feel a great need to wake up with her as many days of my life as I can."

Dangled Baby Out Window

Michael Jackson

Singer Michael Jackson briefly dangled a barefoot baby over the railing of his fourth-floor hotel window on Tuesday, providing a momentary if odd thriller for fans waiting on Berlin's central square below.

The "King of Pop" arrived in the German capital after three days of testimony last week in California in a $21 million lawsuit by a German promoter over canceled concerts.

A crowd of screaming fans greeted the reclusive entertainer, in town to receive a lifetime achievement award at a ceremony on Thursday night, in front of the Adlon Hotel.

When he got up to his room, Jackson opened his window and held a light-skinned baby, a white towel over the tot's head, briefly over the metal railing. He held the baby with one hand.

Jackson has three children, two by ex-wife Debbie Rowe, five-year-old son Prince Michael and four-year-old daughter Paris. He also has a baby who is less than one year old.

'Nazis On Speed'

D-IX

The Nazis developed a cocaine-based drug to boost the performance of their soldiers in combat during World War II and tested it on prisoners in 1944, according to a report in the latest edition of Focus magazine.

"It was Hitler's last secret weapon to win a war he had already lost long ago," said criminologist Wolf Kemper, who is about to publish a book on the Third Reich's use of drugs called Nazis on Speed.

The drug, codenamed D-IX, was tested at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin, where prisoners loaded with 20kg packs were reported to have marched 90km without rest.

Kemper said that from 1933 the Nazis had campaigned against the use of drugs, particularly cocaine, which was widely used in the 1920s.

But as early as 1939, German soldiers were supplied with the amphetamine Pervitine, with about 29 million pills being delivered to the troops from April to December that year.

Pepper Sprayed

D'Angelo

Grammy-winning R&B singer D'Angelo had to be subdued with pepper spray after he resisted arrest on misdemeanor charges of aggressive driving and other counts, police said.

Chesterfield police said they went to D'Angelo's suburban Richmond home after a confrontation he reportedly had with a woman at a gas station Sunday. The singer, whose real name is Michael Eugene Archer, allegedly cursed at the woman and spit on her after he cut her off in his sport utility vehicle, police said.

The 28-year-old singer was released on his recognizance pending a Jan. 15 appearance in Chesterfield General Court.

He's also charged with assault, curse and abuse, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors, Bourque said.

New Charges Filed

'Bumfights'

Prosecutors brought new charges Tuesday against four men accused of paying the homeless to fight for a videotape, saying the defendants induced some of the brawls by offering beer and doughnuts.

The men were charged with battery, illegal fight promotion and conspiracy in connection with the "Bumfights: A Cause for Concern" videotape sold over the Internet. They were already charged with soliciting an assault with deadly force.

All four entered innocent pleas and said through their attorneys they plan to challenge the charges. Defense lawyers have said much of the action on the tape was staged and contend the charges are vague and legally inadequate.

A note posted on the Bumfights Web site called the charges "nonsense" and said a sequel is in the works.

Moans Keep Neighbors Awake

Swingers' Club

A group of weary Berliners have gone to court to try to close down a swingers' club on the ground floor of their building whose members' moans of pleasure and screams of delight are keeping them awake.

"My wife has to reach for the ear plugs every night because the unmistakable sounds of sexual intercourse can be heard throughout the building," said one lawyer who lives on the first floor, directly above the club known as "Zwielicht" -- a German word meaning both "twilight" and "dubious."

Even though tenants get a 25 percent discount on the rent because of the noise, they told the Berlin state court they had had enough and wanted the club closed down, Berlin's B.Z. daily reported on Tuesday.

Berlin actress Anouschka Renzi told the court she was tired of seeing half-naked men clad only in bathrobes getting out of stretch limousines on their way into the club. "This is not a red-light district," she said.

Animation Awards Moved To February

The Annie Awards

The animation industry's annual awards will be moved from its traditional November date to Feb. 1 - a move that will put it closer to the Academy Awards.

Founded 30 years ago, the Annie Awards honor outstanding animation in television and film. Organizers hope the move will make the awards a more closely watched prelude to the Oscars.

Nominations in more than 20 categories will be announced Jan. 6. The ceremony will be held at Glendale's Alex Theatre.

The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences last year awarded its first Oscar for best animated feature to "Shrek," which also was the big winner at the 2001 Annies.

NBC Wins Week

Weekly Ratings

Thanks to a bachelor-trashing session and Jennifer Lopez, ABC showed some signs of life last week.

The struggling network had its biggest weekly audience of the season, even though it still finished third behind NBC and CBS. ABC also finished second to NBC among the advertiser-friendly 18-to-49-year-old age demographic for the first time this season.

NBC, in a tight struggle with CBS for "sweeps" month supremacy, had six of the top 11 shows in the ratings. Niles' illness on "Frasier" helped the comedy to a stronger-than-usual showing.

For the week of Nov. 11-17, the top 10 shows, their networks and ratings: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 18.3; "Friends," NBC, 15.8; "ER," NBC, 15.7; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 13.3; "Everybody Loves Raymond," CBS, 12.9; "Law & Order," NBC, 12.7; "Survivor: Thailand," CBS, 12.5; "NFL Monday Night Football: Oakland at Denver," ABC, 12.4; "Scrubs," NBC, 12.4; "Will & Grace," NBC, 12.1.

Galaxy NGC 6240

Black Holes

Two supermassive black holes, each with the mass of at least a million suns, have been found circling each other in a single butterfly-shaped galaxy, astronomers reported on November 19, 2002. This is the first time scientists have gotten proof that two of these giants can exist in the same galaxy, using data gathered by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. Image on the left shows the galaxy NGC 6240 in optical wavelengths taken by the Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The Chandra image on the right covers the same field of view of the galaxy's central region. The colors in the X-ray image show the intensity of the low (red), medium (green) and high (blue) energy X-rays. For the first time, Chandra has clearly revealed two supermassive black holes in the core of the galaxy.
