I just wanted the people of Athens to know what a kind and thoughtful man they have in their community.
William Thomas: America- He's Your President for Goodness Sake! (seniorlivingmag.com)
In President Obama, Americans have the real deal, the whole package and a leader that citizens of almost every country around the world look to with great envy. Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat.
Budget Puzzle: You Fix the Budget (The New York Times)
Today, you're in charge of the nation's finances. Some of your options have more short-term savings and some have more long-term savings. When you have closed the budget gaps for both 2015 and 2030, you are done. Make your own plan, then share it online.
Scott Burns: Is it Time to Eat the Rich? (assetbuilder.com)
Should we eat the rich? The idea came to mind as I read the Forbes annual list of the 400 wealthiest people in America. Bill Gates topped the list (as usual) at $54 billion. He was followed (as usual) by Warren Buffett at $45 billion.
Jim Hightower: DON'T JUST VOTE, RUN FOR OFFICE!
In a state [New Jersey] where campaigns routinely cost millions of dollars, the AFL-CIO spends a modest $250,000 a year to run a political boot camp that schools ordinary folks to be successful candidates.
Ed Dante: The Shadow Scholar (Chronicle of Higher Education)
You would be amazed by the incompetence of your students' writing. I have seen the word "desperate" misspelled every way you can imagine. And these students truly are desperate. They couldn't write a convincing grocery list, yet they are in graduate school. They really need help. They need help learning and, separately, they need help passing their courses. But they aren't getting it.
Germaine Greer: DH Lawrence has much the same view of women as Stephen Fry (The Guardian)
All those people who have their hearts in the right place have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the not guilty verdict in the trial of Penguin Books under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959. The jury found the publisher not guilty because the book in question, Lady Chatterley's Lover, had literary merit.
Steve Paul: Mark Twain's life is just as interesting as his other stories (McClatchy Newspapers)

The 'Oh, Come all Ye Shoppers...' Edition
In case you haven't noticed (haha), the 'Holiday Season' onslaught has begun. (Actually, it did the day after Halloween, but no matter). The economic hopes and dreams of countless retailers, wholesalers, grocers, catalog companies, Internet discounters, hotels, motels, airlines, bus lines, restaurants, bars, credit card loan-sharks and the Salvation Army are depending on YOU for their very survival... Or, so they say... In addition, as always, elbowing their way in like a bunch of 'Red-haired Step-Children" demanding attention are those, too, who push the whole 'Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards Men... Reason for the Season' agenda despite the overwhelming evidence that those sentiments might actually happen for only, like, two seconds... If'n we're lucky... So.. Looking at 'The Big Picture'...
What is your overall attitude regarding the upcoming festivities?
A.) Joy to the World! It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
B.) Is it over yet?
C.) Sigh... It is, what it is... I'll make it through... somehow... I think...

Hollywood Walk O' Fame
Christina Aguilera
It's no Mickey Mouse thing. Christina Aguilera has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
With some 1,000 fans jamming a Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk to watch, Aguilera gushed with delight Monday as the star was unveiled in front of the Hard Rock Cafe.
Aguilera was just a child when she broke into show business nearly 20 years ago as a member of "The New Mickey Mouse Club," a show that also counted Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as cast members.
Her star, the 2,432nd on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was unveiled nine days before Aguilera's first film, "Burlesque," is to reach theaters. Aguilera, who stars opposite Cher, plays a small-town girl raised in foster homes who chases her dreams to a Los Angeles burlesque club.

Tops Survey
J.K. Rowling
"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling topped a survey of female celebrities who inspire Britons to become their own boss.
Rowling beat U.S. talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and U.S. first lady Michelle Obama in the poll commissioned by website OfficeCavalry.com, which caters for the self-employed.
Nearly one fifth of respondents voted for Rowling, dubbed the world's first billionaire author for her hugely popular boy wizard series and the movies it inspired.
In the men's category, more than one quarter of those questioned voted for Alan Sugar, the British businessman and star of the UK version of TV show "The Apprentice".

Nobel Peace Prize Concert
Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow and Jamiroquai have joined the lineup of artists to perform at the annual Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo.
Organizers say Indian musician A.R. Rahman, who did the score for "Slumdog Millionaire," will also feature in the Dec. 11 show honoring this year's peace laureate, imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.
Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington will host the concert, which is always held a day after the prize ceremony.
Previously announced performers include British pop band Florence and the Machine, U.S. pop singer Colbie Caillat, pianist Herbie Hancock and singer-songwriter Elvis Costello.

The 68-year-old former Beatle is scheduled to perform at the Harlem venue on Dec. 13.
Sirius XM made the announcement Tuesday. The show will celebrate the station reaching 20 million subscribers.
The invitation-only concert will be held for Sirius XM listeners. It also will air live on six Sirius XM channels.

Theme Park Wins Top Industry Award
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton, her signature extreme hourglass figure firmly intact at age 64, accepted the amusement park industry's top theme park award for Dollywood at the sector's annual international expo in Orlando on Tuesday.
"Of course, Walt Disney became successful because he had Mickey Mouse who has two big ears. So I figured I could be successful with Dollywood with my two big partners," Parton said in her acceptance speech.
That was followed by a quick gesture toward her business partners, Pete and Jack Herschend of Herschend Family Entertainment, part of the standing-room-only audience for the event.
Wearing gold stiletto mules, skin-tight black leggings embellished with gold glitter and her trademark big blonde hair, Parton said Dollywood, now in its 25th year, represents a $400 million investment and $1 billion in accumulated payroll in Pigeon Valley, Tenn., an impoverished region when Parton grew up there.

Special Guest
Olivia Newton-John
Singer Olivia Newton-John had a very special guest join her on stage during a concert in Chile's capital: Edison Pena, the rescued miner with a passion for Elvis Presley songs.
Pena often broke out in song to keep up the spirits of the miners trapped underground. And it turns out he also can sing duets. He joined Newton-John on the song "Summer Nights" from the musical "Grease" and got a big ovation.
Pena met Newton-John on a Chilean talk show the night before and she asked him to join her on stage Monday night before 10,000 fans.
Pena says "being on stage was incredible."

Hollywood Mystery
Ronni Chasen
t was a scene befitting a Hollywood true crime drama: A prominent Beverly Hills publicist was gunned down in her Mercedes-Benz after attending a movie premiere, sending the luxury car careening into a light post near Sunset Boulevard.
Police said Ronni Chasen was shot in the chest several times and killed early Tuesday in an attack that stunned Hollywood, where she was a revered figure after promoting the Oscar-winning film "Driving Miss Daisy" and other major movies and stars over the years.
Police had no motive or suspects and said no threats had been reported against the 64-year-old Chasen. The mystery deepened later in the day when police seized computers from her firm, Chasen and Co.
The killing took place after Chasen attended the premiere of the movie "Burlesque," which the trade publication Variety said she was promoting for Screen Gems to position the soundtrack for an Oscar nomination.

Miss Another Court Hearing
Quaids
Randy Quaid and his wife remain fugitives from a California court after the couple failed to appear Tuesday for their arraignment on felony vandalism charges for the fourth time.
Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Donna Geck refused to schedule a new court date for the couple, instead leaving their arrest warrants active. Randy and Evi Quaid have already forfeited more than $1 million in bail for their slew of missed appearances.
Randy Quaid's attorney, Robert Sanger, told the judge that Canadian authorities had confiscated the actor's passport. The Quaids are seeking asylum there, claiming they fear a group they've dubbed the "Hollywood star-whackers."
The Quaids are accused of causing more than $5,000 in damage to the guesthouse of a home they once owned and were allegedly squatting in when they were arrested in September. The current owners are seeking a lengthy restraining order against the Quaids, but a hearing scheduled for Tuesday was continued until Dec. 28 because the couple had not been served.

Warehouse Fire Began In Car
Neil Young
Fire officials in California say a fire at a warehouse that stored memorabilia belonging to Neil Young started in a vintage car the singer had converted into a hybrid vehicle.
Belmont-San Carlos Fire Marshal Jim Palisi told the San Mateo County Times the Nov. 9 fire began in Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental and spread to the nearby warehouse in the San Francisco Bay area. Young had converted the car to run on batteries and a biodiesel-powered generator as part of his LincVolt project to create the world's most efficient full-size vehicle.
Young says workers hope the car's computer will shed light on what caused the vehicle to go up in flames.
Fire crews were able to save about 70 percent of the warehouse's contents, including other cars and music equipment belonging to Young.

"South Park"
Less than a month after "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker were forced to apologize for lifting material for a spoof of "Inception" from the website CollegeHumor, the show is again facing accusations of content theft.
The producers of the animated hit, including Viacom and Comedy Central, are being sued for allegedly ripping off a copyrighted music video for the viral phenomenon "What What (In the Butt)."
The video was produced by Brownmark Films based on a song by Samwell. Released in 2007, it became a massive hit and was featured on PerezHilton.com and VH1's Best Week Ever.
In 2008, South Park aired a re-creation of the video in the episode 'Canada on Strike,' featuring the "South Park" character Butters in place of Samwell.

China Telecom Briefly Hijacked
U.S. Web Traffic
China Telecom sent incorrect routing information last April that resulted in Internet traffic to major corporate websites and U.S. military and government sites being sent through China for 18 minutes, according to a report by a congressional advisory group.
The incident was one of several discussed by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Reuters obtained a copy of the draft report, which will formally be released on Wednesday.
In the hijacking incident, the Web traffic, much of which originated in the United States and was directed toward U.S. corporate and government websites, should have gone the shortest available route and not through China.
Some of the traffic was headed to sites owned by the U.S. Senate, the office of the secretary of defense, NASA and the Commerce Department, the draft said.
The commission said it was unclear whether the hijacking was intentional or whether any data was collected or stopped, or if the massive amount of data affected concealed a targeted attack.

Booming Sales
'Decision Points'
The Decider has written a blockbuster.
Former resident George W. Bush's "Decision Points" sold 775,000 copies through its first week of release, Crown Publishers, an imprint of Random House Inc., announced Tuesday. An initial print run of 1.5 million copies has been increased to 1.85 million. E-book sales alone have topped 100,000.
Bush signed on with Crown not long after leaving the White House in 2009 with poor approval ratings and skepticism that his book would have any appeal. Liberals deeply disliked him, and even conservatives were wary, with the Conservative Book Club declining to make "Decision Points" a main selection.
While the former resident likely will become a million-selling author, he still trails his predecessor Bill Clinton in the memoir sweepstakes. Clinton's "My Life," which came out in 2004, sold more than 900,000 copies in its first week.

Asks Public For Help
Louvre
France's Louvre museum is making an unprecedented appeal to the general public to help it raise the cash to buy a 16th century painting deemed a national treasure by art experts.
The Louvre has already scraped together 3 million euros ($4.19 million) for "The Three Graces," an oil painting of three nudes by German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, but is a million euros short of the price tag set by the work's private owners.
The Louvre has until the end of January to raise the funds, without which it fears the masterpiece could go to another private collector and never go on public display, or worse, be taken out of France.
"
Painted in 1531, the work is an ironic and provocative take on the Renaissance theme of the three graces, depicting the nudes in a mildly daring pose that the Louvre believes could make it a headlining piece of its collections.

Fetches Record $46 Million
Pink Diamond
A rare pink diamond fetched 45.44 million Swiss francs ($45.75 million) on Tuesday, virtually doubling the previous record to become the most expensive stone ever sold at auction, Sotheby's said.
The rectangular pink diamond, which weighs 24.78 carats and is about the size of a pinball, was the star lot among 550 on the block at semi-annual jewelry sales in Geneva.
Top diamond trader Laurence Graff was the buyer, bidding by telephone, a Sotheby's official told reporters.
The stone, purchased from American jeweler Harry Winston 60 years ago by the anonymous owner who consigned it for auction in the Swiss city, had a pre-sale estimate of $27-38 million.

Relics From Tomb Discovered
King Richard II
Relics from the tomb of the medieval English King Richard II have been found by an archivist researching the papers of the National Portrait Gallery's first director George Scharf, the London gallery said on Tuesday.
Among hundreds of diaries and notebooks left in boxes not opened for years were contents from the coffin of the ill-fated monarch and sketches of his skull and bones.
The contents of a cigarette box dated August 31, 1871 were only identified as relics from a royal tomb when it was possible to cross reference the date on the box with diary entries and sketches made on the same day.
Records from this date show Scharf was present at an opening of the royal graves at Westminster Abbey, and a piece of leather corresponds with his sketch of a glove contained in the coffin.
Scharf, who also witnessed the opening of the graves of Richard II, Edward VI, Henry VII, James I and Elizabeth of York, made careful sketches of Richard II's skull and bones, including detailed measurements.

Grave Draws Tourists
Harry Potter
Spoiler alert: Harry Potter is dead.
Not the bespectacled teenage wizard created by author J.K. Rowling. This deceased Potter was a British soldier killed in 1939, and his grave is helping draw tourists to the backwater Israeli town of Ramle.
Ramle does not keep numbers on how many tourists flock to the grave in the town's British military cemetery, but tour guides and the municipality say the tombstone has become a popular attraction, largely for domestic travelers.
"There is no connection with the Harry Potter we know from literature, but the name sells, the name is marketable," said Ron Peled, a tour guide who said he has brought dozens of groups to the grave.
Pvt. Harry Potter was born near Birmingham, England, and joined the British military in 1938. According to his regiment's website, he arrived to British mandate Palestine later that year, where he was killed in battle with an armed band in 1939. He was 18.
