M Is FOR MASHUP - November 14th, 2012 (The Year of the Mashup Album)
Far Out Mashup Album
By DJ Useo
Yup, I confess, I self-declared 2012 the year of the mashup album. I personally have posted one new Useo mashup album every month. I've also been involved with many SoundUnsound, Beatles Remixers Group, Institute Of Bootleggers, and more mashup albums. I know I sure felt the benefit. It's a hard choice, but I think
SUMMER BOOTY 2012
( www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-booty-2012-summer-mashup-album.html ) &
SoundUnsound 80s Mashed 2
( www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/09/soundunsound-80s-mashed-2.html ) are my favorites overall, but literally none of the mashup albums I've heard since New Years Day 2012 have been lousy.
I will grant you that's only my opinion. I totally get that many of you wouldn't appreciate all the wide swath of styles represented through dj mixes these last eleven months. That's one of the reasons I make mashup albums in so many types of music. My 'FRIKKENFRACK : Useo's Strangest Mashups' series would probably kill most people, lol. While my '
HOW TO DANCE TO MASHUPS' album
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/06/how-to-dance-with-mashups-15-tracks.html ) is easily accessible to your average mashup fan. As the year progressed, I decided to go a little further out each month with releases of wide variety. For instance the last two, the
Devo Mashup tribute collection 'Are We Not Mashed?'
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/09/are-we-not-mashed-devo-tribute.html ) & 'DJ Useo-Halloween ep 2012'
( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/10/dj-useo-halloween-ep-2012.html ) are recommended for only the most adventurous mashup listener.
My original plan for November's release was a Depeche Mode mashup tribute album, however, I had a recurrence of spine trouble that laid me up in bed. Between the pain & pain meds, it appeared I'd be unable to complete my plans to do Novembers' mashup album. Laying around gives you a lot of time to think, though, & I devised a replacement album. I had a bunch of finished tracks just sitting around. Almost enough to make a discs' worth. Then, luck struck! I popped an old data disc into the mac to look for some acapellas, & found it had a file on it labelled 'CHECK THESE'. It was 19 mixed tracks of wide variety, needing only final production to be ready for release. I added the best of the 19 found tracks to the other unreleased mixes I had & ended up with wa-a-ay more tracks than needed. The wise thing to do was to bring in the skilled DJ Petrushka to select only one discs' worth & leave off the ones less likely to please the majority of listeners.
Here's the final playlist we arrived at for the album I call 'FAR OUT MASHUPS'. Petrushka even did the tough task of putting the tracks in the best order.

Mix Of The Week
"DJ Food - 'Flashback Megamix' (DJ Shadow Mx2)" is such a wonderful piece of mixing. DJ Food says of this work- "Created for the XFM radio DJ Shadow special 20/09/12 - the main 23 minute mix using tracks, remixes, productions for others and the odd sample from Shadow's career to date. I took the lesser-known compilation track 'Flashback' as a theme to rapidly look back through his back catalogue." Out of all the dj's I know of, DJ Food is my favorite. Hear why

Be sure & update to the latest version of your mixing applications. There's almost always big improvements.
Latest Useo Thing
'The Word Souls' (The Beatles vs The Stranglers) is like my 4th or 5th Beatles vs Stranglers mashup. The others all went over like gangbusters, but personally I think this is the best one. It's The Word from Rubber Soul sung over Souls from Aural Sculpture. Both source records are ultimately worthwhile. Mashup for demonstration purposes only.

Recent events have … demonstrated clearly what was already apparent to careful observers: the deficit-scold movement was never really about the deficit. Instead, it was about using deficit fears to shred the social safety net. And letting that happen wouldn't just be bad policy; it would be a betrayal of the Americans who just re-elected a health-reformer president and voted in some of the most progressive senators ever.

… income above $250,000 does need to be taxed more (as it was before George W. Bush came along and threw things wildly out of balance). Right now. For real. But the entitlement cutbacks don't need to kick in for at least 10 years, so long as they are agreed to now. And my point is that, by the end of those ten years (or maybe it will have to be 15 or 20), we may well be in a position to repeal the cuts! Even before they take effect! Certainly there will be tens of millions of voters urging that; and a Congress that - like any Congress - would prefer to give than rescind.

Meets With Biden
Bono
The White House says Vice President Joe Biden has met with U2 frontman Bono to discuss global development, AIDS and efforts to fight poverty.
The singer and activist has been a leading advocate for Africa, drawing attention to issues ranging from poverty and hunger to AIDS.
Spokesman Jay Carney joked that Bono and Jim Messina - President Barack Obama's campaign manager - were forming a new band. Messina also visited the White House on Tuesday. Carney says Obama did not meet with Bono.

Didn't Know She Was Married
Janeane Garofalo
Sometimes what happens in Vegas actually does stay in Vegas -- at least for two decades. Funny girl Janeane Garofalo is claiming she's been married for 20 years, and didn't even know it!
The Reality Bites actress told the New York Post that she and Big Bang Theory producer Rob Cohen decided to wed at a Las Vegas drive-thru chapel but never thought it would stick. "Rob and I got married, for real, which we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight," Garofalo said at the New York Comedy Festival reunion for The Ben Stiller Show. "We were married for 20 years until this evening."
Garofalo, 48, further explained, "We got married drunk in Vegas. ... We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through chapel in a cab. [We thought], 'You have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff.' So, who knew? We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something."
Cohen, 63, joked, "I'm gonna get all of that Reality Bites money!"

Collage Fetches $87,720
Sgt. Pepper
Sotheby's says an original piece of artwork from the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album has fetched 55,250 pounds (US$87,720) at an auction.
The auction house said the original 1967 collage for the insert to the album sold to a bidder in London on Tuesday.
The sale marked the first time the collage by Sir Peter Blake was on the market.
The auction house said Blake was introduced to the Beatles by his dealer, and that he and his wife worked closely with Paul McCartney and John Lennon to create the imagery of the "Sgt. Pepper."

Bowler And Cane To Hit Auction Block
Charlie Chaplin
One of Charlie Chaplin's iconic bowler hats and canes, the staple of Hollywood silent-era comedy, will go under the hammer in Los Angeles this weekend, auction house Bonhams said on Tuesday.
Chaplin's hat and cane - synonymous with his trademark "Little Tramp" character in films such as "City Lights" and "Modern Times" - are expected to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000 in the November 18 auction.
It is unknown how many of Chaplin's bowlers and canes still exist, said Lucy Carr, a memorabilia specialist at Bonhams. The ones up for auction come from a private collection but have a direct link to Chaplin, Carr said.
Chaplin's hat and cane are the highlights of an auction of popular culture artifacts including a saxophone that belonged to jazz pioneer Charlie Parker ($22,000-$26,000) and a handwritten letter from John Lennon in which The Beatle sketched himself and wife Yoko Ono nude ($18,000-$22,000).
Other items hitting the block range from an archive of Marilyn Monroe photographs ($15,000-$20,000), an early Charles Schulz "Peanuts" comic strip ($10,000-$15,000) and a wicker chair from Rick's Cafe in "Casablanca" ($5,000-$7,000).

No More Touring
INXS
Australian rock group INXS has called it quits as a live touring band after 35 years, thanking fans and honoring late frontman Michael Hutchence in a statement on Tuesday.
INXS, which sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, including more than 10 million alone of their 1987 breakthrough "Kick", issued the statement after comments by band member Jon Farriss during a weekend performance sparked a frenzy on Twitter.
"We understand that this must come as a blow to everybody, but all things must eventually come to an end," INXS members Tim, Andrew and Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers said. "We have been performing as a band for 35 years, it's time to step away from the touring arena."
Farriss, the band's drummer, set the Internet abuzz on Sunday night after he told the audience during a support performance for U.S. band Matchbox Twenty in Perth that it was the last time INXS would perform together. Saxophone player Pengilly later told a radio station the band was not breaking up.

Accuser Recants
Elmo
The man who claimed he had underage sex with the puppeteer behind "Sesame Street" character Elmo recanted his claims on Tuesday, U.S. media reported.
The unnamed man, now 23, had claimed that Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash had a sexual relationship with him when the accuser was 16 years old, potentially engulfing one of the biggest childhood brands in an underage sex scandal.
"He wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship," the law firm Andreozzi and Associates, who represent the man, told U.S. media outlets in a statement.
Clash, 52, who had denied the allegations, said in a statement obtained by Reuters on Tuesday: "I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest. I will not discuss it further."
New York-based Sesame Workshop said on Monday that its own inquiry had concluded that the claims of underage sexual conduct against Clash were unsubstantiated.

Ollie North's Seal Of Approval
'Call of Duty'
Former CIA Director David Petraeus is still reeling from a recently revealed extramarital affair that may have national security repercussions, but in the video game world things are going much better for the retired four-star general.
In the new "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" game released on Tuesday, Petraeus is the newly appointed secretary of defense in the year 2025.
And that's not the only unusual bit of predicted future developments in the game from creators Activision and Treyarch. When we first meet Petraeus, he's aboard the USS Barack Obama.
Several high-profile actors have lent their talents to previous "Call of Duty" video game installments. As Kotaku reports, Petraeus in the game is voiced by actor Jim Meskimen.
Then again, this latest installment of the "Call of Duty" franchise offers a platform for another former real-life military figure whose stature was diminished in the face of scandal. Former Lt. Col. Oliver North served as an adviser on the game and even makes an appearance in a flashback cinematic sequence, where he does his own voice work.

What Happened to the Religious Vote?
An 'Evangelical Disaster'
Ever since Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980, evangelicals have been a powerful political force. Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority organization were credited in part with Reagan's election, having registered millions of evangelicals to vote. Their influence would only grow over the next 25 years: Evangelicals were instrumental in Reagan's reelection, the Republican Revolution of 1994, and both of George W. Bush's victories. But on Nov. 6, 2012. their reign came to an end.
"I think this [election] was an evangelical disaster," Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told NPR. He's right, but it wasn't for lack of trying.
The late Falwell's Liberty University gave former Gov. Mitt Romney its keynote spot at its 2012 commencement and backed off previous language calling Mormonism a "cult." Billy Graham uncharacteristically threw his support behind the Republican candidate, and his evangelistic association bought full-page newspaper ads all but endorsing Romney. Ralph Reed's Faith and Freedom Coalition spent tens of millions in battleground states to get out the religious vote.
As a result, 79 percent of white evangelicals voted for Romney on Tuesday. That's the same percentage that Bush received in 2004, and more than Sen. John McCain received in 2008. The evangelical vote was 27 percent of the overall electorate -- the highest it's ever been for an election.
Their support wasn't enough. Not only did President Obama win soundly, but four states voted to allow same-sex marriage.

May Cast Doubt
Particle Find
An extremely rare particle measurement from the world's largest atom smasher could cast doubt on a popular theory about the fundamental building blocks of the universe, including dark matter.
Physicists from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland have measured a particular type of particle transformation for the first time, and found that it happens just about as often as predicted by the dominant theory of particle physics, called the Standard Model.
The measurement is just preliminary - the researchers haven't collected enough data to be positive what they're seeing isn't just a random occurrence. Still, the fact that the initial observations correspond so well with the Standard Model predictions isn't a hopeful sign for what scientists call "new physics," such as new particles not predicted by the Standard Model.
One of the most popular theories of new physics is the idea of "supersymmetry" - that all of the known subatomic particles have "superpartner" particles that haven't yet been observed. If these superpartners exist, they could help explain some persistent physics mysteries, such as the nature of dark matter, an invisible substance thought to make up a quarter of the universe. Scientists think dark matter may in fact be composed of supersymmetric particles that haven't yet been detected.
While the new measurement, reported today (Nov. 12) by physicists at the Large Hadron Collider's LHCb experiment

Finds His Doppelganger in 16th Century Italian Painting
Max Galuppo
What started out as a leisurely stroll through the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Nov. 11 with his girlfriend, quickly turned into quite a surreal experience for Max Galuppo, 20, of Bloomsbury, N.J.
Galuppo, a Temple University student, found his doppelganger in a 16th century Italian painting by an unknown artist titled "Portrait of a Nobleman with Dueling Gauntlet."
"It was really weird. He goes to Temple so we'd been saying for a while we wanted to go to the art museum," his girlfriend, Nikkie Curtis, told ABCNews.com. "We went into the armor exhibit and he loved the helmets. He was completely oblivious to it, and I walked past it and was like, 'Do you see this painting right now? It looks just like you.'"
Although Galuppo's resemblance to the dark haired, huskily built, bearded face seems obvious to the 735 Reddit users who have commented on the photo since Curtis uploaded it to the site late Sunday night, Galuppo, at first, said he failed to recognize the similarity.

Diamond Fetches $21.5 Million
Archduke Joseph
A huge, internally flawless diamond from India's fabled Golconda mines was sold at auction in Geneva on Tuesday night for a record 20.355 million Swiss francs ($21.48 million), Christie's said.
The rare, colorless stone weighing 76.02 carats, and roughly the size of a large strawberry, once belonged to Archduke Joseph August of Austria (1872-1962), a prince of the Hungarian line of the Habsburgs.
Its pre-sale estimate was 15-to-25 million Swiss francs and it fetched more than double the price paid for it at auction almost two decades ago.
The previous record was held by the "Beau Sancy", a pear-shaped diamond of 34.98 carats, sold by rival Sotheby's for 9 million Swiss francs last May.
