Wiki Answers tells us that a 'rickroll' is a prank played on an unsuspecting web surfer. To be rickrolled is when browsing a website (especially a discussion forum or comment board), one comes across a link expecting it to lead to one thing, but finds something completely different when the link is clicked. The name Rick refers to 80s pop singer Rick Astley. The standard rickroll generally involves someone posting a link claiming it leads to something quite interesting (e.g. hot chicks in panties), but actually linking to a video of Mr. Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up." This is usually considered a major let-down. 'Thanks,Wiki. But now there's something new, the RICKRAWK.
I bring this up because I'm sure you all remember the recent column here regarding the Kate Perry tribute album "We All Kissed A Girl - The Ultimate Kate Perry Mashup compilation". I mention the collection because there was a large call for a volume two in the AudioPornCentral 'Guilty Pleasures' series. Simon Iddol, who was responsible for the first volume (& it's splendid success), does not sit on his laurels, but instead forges ahead with the anticipated release. 'Guilty Pleasures - Volume Two RICKRAWKED' spins off from the premise established on MTV Europe that Rick Astley is the best act ever. Hence you get thirteen bootleg versions of "Never Gon'na Give You Up'. I guess that makes this the best mashup album ever.
You read that correctly. DJ's of such range that DJ Morgoth, DJ Tripp & Lobsterdust are counted among the featured. Well-established bootleggers Divide & Kreate are 'Never Gon'na Freak You Out' when they graft Mr.Astley to Graham Coxon. Astley will remain undefeated when he gets put to the 'Theme From Rocky' by the red-hot Phil Retrospector. You'll wish MightyMike's track 'Neverending' actually was when you witness it's mashing of Rick & Mika.
I finagled a quote out of mashup jig contributor to RICKRAWKED, Qubic."One of the few mashup religious encounters you'll experience where cheese has been turned into wine." There's no arguing with logic like that, not when there're 13 Astley mashups to back him up. "An awesome collection of top notch mashups for a Rawkin good time." He added as MadMixMustang's track 'Don't You Ever Give Up Wanting Me Baby' (Astley vs Human League) convinced me again. As Simon Iddol himself mentioned. "People won't be getting Rick Rolled anymore... they'll be getting Rick Rawked!" said Qubic in a retort sure to be googled often.
It's really quite an amazing collection given that the different mixers are all from various countries. That surely speaks to the far-reach of Mr.Astley's music. I got to participate in an online chat where we all played the collection, & altho the word 'cheese' did arise infrequently, everyone walked away happy. Grab a piece of the happiness for yourself by heading here -

CAMILLE PAGLIA: "Final Cut: The Selection Process for Break, Blow, Burn"(bu.edu/arion)
"BREAK, BLOW, BURN," my collection of close readings of forty-three poems, took five years to write. The first year was devoted to a search for material in public and academic libraries as well as bookstores. I was looking for poems in English from the last four centuries that I could wholeheartedly recommend to general readers, especially those who may not have read a poem since college.
Ben Wener: Van Morrison ventures into the mystic once more (The Orange County Register)
So much has been said about Van Morrison's 1968 mystical masterpiece "Astral Weeks," so many accolades heaped upon it by every bastion of rock journalism, it almost seems redundant to extol its virtues all over again, even when Morrison's revival of it over the weekend at the Hollywood Bowl demands it.
Natasha Oughtred, ballet dancer: Interview by Imogen Fox (guardian.co.uk)
I think being a ballet dancer is a huge part of what I am, so that is reflected in my clothing. So often dancers leave by the stage door in a hoodie so no one can see them, and I think that's a bit of shame. Sometimes I feel a little out of place when I walk out of the door with my fake-fur jacket on. The 1950s, when ballerinas such as Margot Fonteyn were dressed by the fashion houses in beautiful hats and fur coats, must have been an amazing time. I think as dancers we are ambassadors for our art and we almost have an image to keep up. If we slouch about in hoodies it shatters people's illusions.
David Bruce: Problem-Solving (athensnews.com)
Getting married occurs naturally and easily for some people. Others have to work at it. Barbara Feldon, who played the role of Agent 99 on TV's Get Smart, knows someone who treated the process of finding someone to get married to like a problem that needed to be solved. She telephoned lots and lots of friends and acquaintances and told them to fix her up with a male - she was willing to date any man at least once, no matter what the man looked like. After a couple of years of doing this, she got married.

Singing bowls (also known as 'Himalayan bowls' or 'rin' or suzu gongs in Japan) are a type of bell, specifically classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound. Singing bowls were traditionally used throughout Asia as part of Bön and Tantric Buddhist sadhana.
Singing bowls were historically made in Tibet, Nepal, India, Bhutan, China, Japan and Korea. Today they are made in Nepal, India, Japan and Korea. The best known type are from the Himalayan region and are often called "Tibetan singing bowls."

Today's question takes me back to the 1970s when we were all celebrating the, "New Age" with such ancient practices as burning incense and listening to the Tibetan Singing Bowl (when "played" with a wooden stick, the metal bowl emits a resounding sound that assists in meditation and releases mantras).
Anyhoo, I would suspect that such a 'bowl" would fall into the category or classification of a type of (A) bell. Hare Krishna for today, y'all.

The late comedian George Carlin - famous for those "Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV" - was honored Monday with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the only award he saw as a legitimate comedy prize.
Jon Stewart, Lily Tomlin, Joan Rivers and others saluted Carlin at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for inspiring their own comedy, and they took up his cause of pushing the boundaries of free speech.
Actor and comedian Dennis Leary said he grew up in a church that listed banned books and records in the bulletin each Sunday, including Carlin's "Class Clown" and "Seven Words." Leary said he and his fellow altar boys immediately pooled their money to listen to Carlin's "Seven Words."
The prize was announced shortly before Carlin died of heart failure in June at the age of 71. This is the first time in its 11 years that the award was presented posthumously. The program will be aired later on PBS stations.
She's already the Queen of Soul, but now Aretha Franklin has been named the greatest singer of the rock era in a poll conducted by Rolling Stone magazine.
Franklin, 66, came in ahead of Ray Charles at No. 2, Elvis Presley at No. 3, Sam Cooke at No. 4 and John Lennon at No. 5, according to the magazine's survey of 179 musicians, producers, Rolling Stone editors, and other music-industry insiders.
The 100-strong list will be published on Friday, when Rolling Stone hits the newsstands with four different covers.
Besides Franklin, the only other living people in the top 10 were Bob Dylan at No. 7 and Stevie Wonder at No. 9. Marvin Gaye was No. 6, Otis Redding No. 8, and James Brown No. 10.

Tony Dow, best known as the actor who portrayed The Beav's big brother, Wally, in the '50s TV series "Leave It to Beaver," will have one of his abstract sculptures on display at the Louvre. Several sculptors from the Karen Lynne Gallery - including Dow - will have their works shown at the historic art museum in Paris as part of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition.
"Having something shown at the Louvre is about as good as you can get," said Dow, who lives in Los Angeles, "especially when it's a juried show like this where there's a panel of judges who pick the pieces to be in the exhibition. I'm a little humbled by the whole thing but grateful nonetheless."
Dow, who has also worked as a director and visual effects producer on several TV shows, has been painting and sculpting since he was a teenager. The 63-year-old artist's sculpture that will be shown at the Louvre from Dec. 11 to Dec. 14 is titled "Unarmed Warrior," and is a bronze figure of a woman holding a shield.
The singer will appear in a newspaper ad for the state's largest food bank that says: "We Can't Let This Bank Fail!"
Springsteen has been a supporter of the food bank for 23 years, often donating proceeds from concerts or encouraging fans to bring food donations to his shows. This is the first time he's lent his image to the anti-hunger campaign.
The Community Food Bank says the economy has resulted in a 30 percent increase in those needing food and could lead it to ration supplies for the first time in its 26-year history.
A 97-year-old document that contains clues to the identity of Eleanor Rigby, the subject of one of the Beatles' best-loved songs, is expected to fetch 500,000 pounds ($775,000) when it goes on sale this month.
The manuscript is a salary register from Liverpool City Hospital and features the name E. Rigby, a scullery maid who has signed for her monthly wage. Her annual earnings were 14 pounds.
According to its owner Annie Mawson, the document was sent to her in 1990 by former Beatle Paul McCartney when she wrote to him on behalf of her charity the Sunbeams Music Trust (), which uses music to help people with special needs.
Mawson did not immediately realize the significance of the register until she read down the list of names and spotted E. Rigby.

An unseen collection of memorabilia owned by the late Spike Milligan is to go under the hammer later this month.
The sale includes a notebook of comical radio skits, notes from the Prince of Wales and Michael Parkinson and an 1883 Broadwood Grand Piano, which was often played by Milligan's friend Sir Paul McCartney.
Annotated books, paintings, poems and photographs belonging to the celebrated comic - who died in 2002 aged 83 - will also be auctioned at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London, on November 25.
Milligan is probably best remembered for his central role in the radio series of The Goon Show in the 1950s, in which he starred with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine.
After an F-bomb dropped on "Morning Joe," the MSNBC news-talk show has installed an early-warning system.
A seven-second delay was added with Tuesday's broadcast, to protect against future eruptions such as that of host Joe Scarborough (R-Spending More Time With Family), who seemed to surprise even himself with his verboten utterance.
Scarborough slipped Monday while attempting to describe the rawboned manner of Rahm Emanuel, incoming White House chief of staff for President-elect Barack Obama.
The delay will not be on any other MSNBC programming, according to spokesman Jeremy Gaines. When asked whether it had been ordered up by network brass or requested by Scarborough, Gaines said, "It was a mutual decision."

Eliasson recently created a public work of art that put four waterfalls in the East River and New York Harbor that drew 1.4 million visitors.

Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero is being investigated on suspicion of tax evasion, Italian authorities said Tuesday.
Tax police in the northern town of Viareggio allege that Botero must pay taxes in Italy because his artworks are produced entirely by companies and foundries in the country that distribute them to galleries worldwide.
Botero's residence is in Monaco. He owns a studio in Pietrasanta, a Tuscan town where he also spends part of the year.
Botero sparked controversy in recent years with drawings and paintings depicting abuse of prisoners by U.S. troops at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
England's biggest exam board has withdrawn a music paper after criticism that its coursework featured a song by disgraced British pop singer Gary Glitter.
The song "I'm the leader of the gang (I am)" by Glitter, who spent three years in a Vietnamese jail for child sex abuse, was included in the suggested listening list for the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) GCSE music exam taken by high school students.
But after condemnation from teaching unions and media, the AQA said it had taken action to remove it.
Tim Robbins' difficulty in voting on Election Day was his own fault, New York City's Board of Elections maintains.
Board representative Gregory C. Soumas wrote a letter to Robbins, telling him that he was not on the rolls at the poll site he visited last week "because you simply went to the wrong poll site."
Soumas said Robbins filed a new voter registration form in February 2004, changing his voting address - which meant he had to vote elsewhere, about six blocks away.
The confusion appears to stem from the double registration of Robbins - one his home address, the other his nearby office address - and the board eliminated one.
Michelle Williams' father, a prominent stock market trader, agreed Tuesday to return to the United States to face tax evasion charges.
Larry Williams has been fighting extradition since he was arrested by Australian police in 2006 after flying to Sydney for a speaking tour in Australia and New Zealand. He has been free on bail.
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service wants to question the 65-year-old Virgin Islands resident about a possible $1.5 million in unpaid taxes from book royalties and earnings related to international seminars he conducted between 1990 and 2001.
The U.S. military, with help from Seattle startup Delve Networks, has launched a video-sharing Web site for troops, their families and supporters, a year and a half after restricting access to YouTube and other video sites.
TroopTube, as the new site is called, lets people register as members of one of the branches of the armed forces, family, civilian Defense Department employees or supporters. Members can upload personal videos from anywhere with an Internet connection, but a Pentagon employee screens each for taste, copyright violations and national security issues.
Part of Delve's work was to build speedy tools for approving and sorting incoming videos. Its technology also crunches video files into several sizes and automatically plays the one that best suits viewers' Internet connection speeds.
In May 2007, the Defense Department banned employees and soldiers from accessing sites including YouTube and MySpace, citing security and bandwidth issues. Delve Chief Executive Alex Castro called TroopTube a "retention tool" aimed at a generation of soldiers who bring laptops to the front lines.
