As long as I've known, Halloween has held a special
fascination for me. The mock fear, the costumes, & the
candy aside, there's also the music of the season. When
I was a lad, it was all "Monster Mash", &
""Thriller". Well now, I'm an adult, & the music has only
changed some. The songs are still the same, but now, you
get more than one at a time. Mashups have invaded every
holiday, & this one is no exception.
To celebrate the occasion, I worked up a Halloween
podcast show. I released it early in the month because
I planned a follow-up Halloween show for the actual
week leading up to it. Yup! It's just what it sounds
like. You have TWO Halloween podcasts waiting for you
right now! They're all-ages friendly, & jam-packed full
of suitable mashups. My dear friend DJ Petrushka joined
me for some scary fake advertisements in the first
episode, leaving me to do all the parts in the latter
show.
In these podcasts, you'll hear many classic mashups
from the last few years.DJ Engineer's "Happy
Mash-O-Ween", Fifth Horseman's "Dark Addams Family",
and King.of.Pants' "FrankenBooted", all jam-packed with
fearsome melodies and frightening beats. You also get
new mashups like DJ M.i.F's, "So Into Funky Ghost
Humping", and Discodoc's "Witchy Woman, MD". These
new tracks will thrill you way more than candy corn
could ever.
There's also a flock of new tracks by me, as I can't
resist cranking out tracks for my favorite season.
You will hear Marilyn Manson howling over Lawrence
Welk in the track "Nobodies Mountain King". The Bevis
Frond adds searing guitar to Mental As Anything,
resulting in "Spirit Got Lost In Inner Marshland".
There's even some original vocals by the mysterious
Mr. Mee in the track "Dead Fear". In all you'll hear 8
new Halloween tracks from the desk of DJ Useo. The
second podcast features a Halloween mix from the
ever-talented Cheekyboy. A classic set from 2005,
which like the Frankenstein Monster, will never die,
but continue to frighten listeners for years to come.
I hope you'll enjoy the crazy skits and mashups in
these shows. The enjoyment that I got from putting
them together was more fun than bobbing for apples
with "The Creature From The Black Lagoon", and he can
hold his breath for quite a long time.

By the way, Cheekyboy's MASHED PUMPKINS Halloween
compilation is still available, massive downloads
merely forced a change of address. Here's the new
link - mashingpumpkins.moonfruit.com/
Mix Of The Week: Ghosts have spirited the Mix of the
Week off to the netherworld. I'll tell you what, if
any of you find a good Halloween mix, send it off to
me.
If you don't like Halloween mashups, please don't come
around waxing my windows.
CONNIE SCHULTZ: "The Grinch Was Right (In the End) "(creators.com)
Let's get rid of Christmas. I don't mean the babe in the manger, the carols or kissing Uncle Festus under the mistletoe. What I mean is the other Christmas, where we race to spend, spend, spend money we don't have, have, have.
Roger Ebert: "Jerry Seinfeld: Bee society is very human, only more evolved"
Jerry Seinfeld has been known to enjoy the odd bungee jump, but dressing up like a bee and throwing himself off the roof of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes was new for him. This was last May. The studio attached a steel cable to the hotel, 130 feet in the air, and Jerry glided down to the photographers and bee-lovers below. It was a stunt to promote the new animated film, "Bee Movie," which opens Friday.

Here's to a healthier heart (guardian.co.uk)
When he consulted a cardiologist about his angina, Malcolm Smith was told to drink three glasses of red wine daily. Could it really be good for him?
mj was first, and correct:
Shoot, I ain't dyin' for no white man.
Now where did that come from (It is oddly appropriate).
I'm going for A. D is right straight out. I'm not sure how long S&W have been around. Colt was defintely timely, but I'm pretty sure either of those two would have made a close range shot fatal immediately. But I've been wrong before.
Second was Ken D:
Has to be a Derringer……Peacemaker wasn't around yet and I don't think S&W was either.
Third was mikey, writing:
Booth was a little man with a little gun.
(A) Derringer Pistol
Buzzcook wrote:
He used the Derringer pistol. The Colt Peace Maker and the Winchester rifle hadn't been invented yet.
You have to wonder if Booth would have done it if he'd had an acting job.
Alan J answered:
Derringer Pistol
Dave in Tucson used deductive reasoning:
Great question! If I have this right:
B. The Colt Peacemaker wasn't introduced until the 1870s
D. Was most definitely not the Winchester rifle. Like the Colt, wasn't around in 1865, though it would have made an interesting splint after Booth leaped and broke his leg.
C. Don't know when the S&W revolver was first introduced, but,
I believe A is the correct choice, derringers were the discreet weapon of choice for murderous fops like Booth.
Sally P wrote:
I saved a great article from my local newspaper (from a wire service) about Lincoln's survival had he been shot in 2007. Now Marty, I take a LOT of flack about saving newspaper articles in this virtual world, today. But, nevertheless, I cut such articles out, and place them between a book and the paper cover of the book (on the person/subject). Therefore, my entry would have been sooner, but finding the article from one of my many books on Lincoln, then reading it for the information, takes a while...you know?
But, I did find it.
"According to the, '13th Historical Clinicopathological Conference,' (sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and the and the Veterans Affairs hospital) John Wilkes Booth shot the 16th president with a muzzleloading derringer pistol."
Now I will probably be up for hours reading, then replacing that which I pulled out - all in the name of trivia! (I liked this one though...)
Porter Wagoner, the greatest rhinestone suit wearin', slow drawlin', country song bawlin', cowboy hat and pointed alligator boot sportin', guitar pickin' sweet talkin' Grand Ole Opry performer…EVER….has just passed away at 80 years old.
With his band "The Blue Ridge Boys", Porter scored a # 1 hit in 1955 with the song "Satisfied Mind". In 1962, he scored another # 1 hit with "Misery Loves Company".
Porter had his own syndicated TV show from 1960 to 1981. He brought James Brown to the Grand Ole Opry…..had a role in the movie "Honkytonk Man" (1982) with Clint Eastwood….and even appeared on "Da Ali G Show" with "Borat".
But I will always remember Porter Wagoner for I thing and I thing only………Dolly!
It was a hot August night in 1973….the Berkeley Community Theater was filled with wild eyed hippies and music loving yuppies….and ME…..for the first time ever a full blown Country and Western Revue was appearing…"The Porter Wagoner Show"…straight outa Nashville, Tennessee…..
Porter's band, The "Wagonmasters" came out first to warm up the crowd of non-believers….a little "Wabash Cannonball" and the room started heating. Next, a green bowler and plaid raggy suit wearing comedian named "Speck Rhodes" came out and did his original version of "You just might be a red neck……"
Then Porter walked slowly onto the stage and sang a song called "The Carroll County Accident" (a tear jerker) and half the crowd cautiously clapped…masterful performer as he was, Porter grabbed the mike and said softly…."I wanna thank ya'll for that wonderful applause…..ya know …we came a loooong way to play for you tonight….we appreciate every single one of you." He had the crowd in the palm of his hands….then he flashed the inside lining of his rhinestone studded suit and it almost blinded everyone…more rhinestones.
Then the big moment….Porter said "I'd like to bring a little lady out for y'all meet…. she hails from Sevierville, Tennessee and she sure has a big ole heart ta share with you….Dolly"….The band went into playing the song "Jolene" and Porter harmonized …..and in her blue and white low cut gingham gown and bouffant blond hair, proceeded to get a standing ovation after standing ovation…..their voices together were chillingly beautiful.
After the last song, Porter invited everyone to form a line and come up on stage with the records that they all bought in the lobby, and get an autograph and a kiss from Dolly Parton…I'm telling you, the line was out the door… hippies and yuppies just drooling their way up to the stage……Oh what a night !
I met Dolly 12 years later on her bus in back of the Cow Palace (she was opening for Kenny Rogers) and I asked if she remembered that night in Berkeley (I told that she had kissed me )…..she said…"I sure do remember that night….that was me and Porter's last tour together…God I loved that man…but he got a little too possessive….". When Dolly got on stage at the Cow Palace, she sang a little song she wrote for Porter…it was called…"I Will Always Love You"!

Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich questioned President Bush's mental health in light of comments he made about a nuclear Iran precipitating World War III.
"I seriously believe we have to start asking questions about his mental health," Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, said in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer's editorial board on Tuesday. "There's something wrong. He does not seem to understand his words have real impact."
Kucinich said he doesn't believe his comments about the president's mental health are irresponsible, according to a story posted on the newspaper's Web site.
"You cannot be a president of the United States who's wanton in his expression of violence," Kucinich said. "There's a lot of people who need care. He might be one of them. If there isn't something wrong with him, then there's something wrong with us. This, to me, is a very serious question."
Major Hollywood unions were lining up behind TV and film writers on Tuesday as last-minute contract talks resumed amid fears of a possible strike.
A powerful branch of the Teamsters union told its 4,500 members they can honor picket lines if TV and film writers strike after their contract expires at midnight Wednesday.
Members of the Screen Actors Guild have also voiced strong support for writers, but officials with that union have said its 150,000 members were obligated to report to work if writers strike.
A strike by writers would not immediately have an impact on TV or film production. Most shows have enough scripts in hand to get them though early next year.

The only thing certain about the critter photographed by a hunter's camera is that some people have gotten the notion it could be a Sasquatch, or bigfoot. Others say it's just a bear with a bad skin infection.

Elvis Presley is still the King. Presley, who earned an estimated $49 million in the past 12 months, has reclaimed the No. 1 spot on Forbes.com's list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities. He last topped the list in 2005.
John Lennon ranks second with earnings of $44 million, followed by Charles M. Schulz ($35 million), George Harrison ($22 million), Albert Einstein ($18 million), Andy Warhol ($15 million), Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) ($13 million), Tupac Shakur ($9 million), Marilyn Monroe ($7 million), Steve McQueen ($6 million), James Brown ($5 million), Bob Marley ($4 million) and James Dean ($3.5 million).
Presley died in 1977. His estate continues to generate millions from music royalties, DVDs, licensing deals and tourism at Graceland, the rocker's mansion in Memphis, Tenn.
A federal court motion was filed by the estate of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. on Monday, claiming that the prison inmate who implicated a former police officer in the killing was lying when he recanted his testimony.
The motion by the estate of the rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, asked for access to the phone and prison visitation records of convicted murderer Waymond Anderson. Earlier this year, Anderson said he lied as part of a scam involving Wallace's family members and attorneys.
The Wallace estate argued that the records will reveal holes in Anderson's latest story and show who was behind Anderson's "wholesale assault on the truth."
Anderson, a former R&B artist now serving a life sentence for murder in a separate case, said in an Aug. 20 deposition that he lied as part of a scam to win a monetary settlement from the city.
If "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno is having second thoughts about surrendering his job as planned, NBC doesn't share them - at least not publicly.
"Conan O'Brien will take over `The Tonight Show' in 2009," NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker said Monday in New York at an event arranged by Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Zucker said he'd like Leno to remain with the company and that "we are in those conversations now."
Leno has said he's comfortable with his planned departure but, according to a report earlier this month in the Los Angeles Times, the comedian has grown reluctant to retire as host of the fabled, top-rated late-night program.

Picture this: Katharine Hepburn and her chauffeur stopped for speeding in the tiny town of Blackwell, Okla. Hepburn berates the strapping young officer as a "moron" and "dumbbell," then adds, "If I ever found an Oklahoma car in Connecticut, I would flatten all the tires."
What could be a scene from a screwball comedy is actually drawn from Hepburn's real life - at least her version of it.
A typed, single-spaced account of the arrest during a 1950-51 tour of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" was in one of 22 boxes of papers from Hepburn's theater career that have been donated to the New York Public Library. They will be available to scholars and fans after they have been cataloged.
Cynthia McFadden, co-executor of Hepburn's will, said the arrest story is written in the voice of the woman she loved - "impatient, funny and occasionally just a little high-handed."
Court TV is changing its name to truTV as part of a campaign to distance the cable channel from "reality" TV offerings on other outlets.
A new tagline, "Not Reality. Actuality," will underscore the new direction when it debuts its new name January 1. The channel, which will focus on real-life programming told from a first-person perspective, said Monday that the tagline is designed to "break through the clutter" of reality shows that have "manufactured and manipulated situations."
The channel, which also will continue to air trial coverage from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. ET weekdays, said the rebranding campaign will start Thursday. The Time Warner-owned network, available in 91 million U.S. households, also announced two new series:
The two series join a slate of previously announced projects in various stages of production or development, including "The Real Hustle," "Neighbors 911" and the tentatively titled "Ski Patrol" and "Black Gold," along with such returning series as "Forensic Files," "Haunting Evidence" and "Psychic Detectives."
No criminal charges will be filed in the well-publicized scuffle between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee at the MTV Video Music Awards, the Clark County district attorney said Tuesday.
"It's worth noting that Tommy Lee requested no prosecution relating to the incident, and there were no injuries to either person," said Dan Kulin, spokesman for Clark County District Attorney David Roger.
"The Clark County district attorney's office will not pursue a battery charge against Robert James Ritchie, also known as Kid Rock, involving a confrontation with Tommy Lee on Sept. 9, 2007, at the Palms Hotel and Casino," Roger said in a statement.
Representatives for Kid Rock and Lee didn't immediately respond Tuesday to requests for comment. Both are ex-husbands of Pamela Anderson, who was a presenter at the show.

Gary Collins was charged Monday with misdemeanor driving under the influence stemming from a traffic accident that police blamed on an 89-year-old motorist.
Collins, 69, was also charged with a misdemeanor count of driving with a blood-alcohol content that's above the legal limit of .08 percent, said city attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan.
Collins was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer on Oct. 16 when his SUV was struck by the other driver in the San Fernando Valley, police said. Collins' vehicle then crashed into two parked cars.
Officers smelled alcohol on Collins' breath and conducted a sobriety test. He was arrested after failing it, authorities said.
Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan is being investigated on possible assault charges against a photographer, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department said on Tuesday.
The celebrity Web site TMZ.com quoted a witness as saying photographer Robert Rosen and Brosnan got into a scuffle when the photographer started to compliment the actor on his James Bond films.
TMZ said Brosnan reacted by cursing Rosen and hitting him in the ribs while the photographer kicked the actor.

A rock that sat untouched in a Pennsylvania museum's fossil collection for years has rare full-body imprints of not just one, but three, ancient amphibians.
Researchers found the imprints in sandstone rocks collected in eastern Pennsylvania decades ago and stored in the museum in Reading, Pa. The body impressions of the salamander-like creatures are estimated to be 330 million years old, or about 100 million years before the first dinosaurs appeared.
Many ancient footprints have been found, but a full-body animal impression is unusual. The three impressions show the foot-long temnospondyls had webbed feet and smooth skin similar to modern-day amphibians, rather than armored bodies.
David Fillmore, who was doing postgraduate work with Kutztown University geology professor Edward Simpson, found the impressions two years ago when the two were studying Mauch Chunk Formation footprints in a fossil collection at Pennsylvania's Reading Public Museum.
A new study of campaign 2008 coverage finds that Illinois Democrat Barack Obama and former "Law & Order" actor Fred Thompson, a Republican, have enjoyed much more positive coverage than their rivals.
By the same token, longtime media darling John McCain of the GOP has taken a beating in coverage, largely the result of mostly negative stories about his fundraising struggles. The study of coverage was conducted from January 1-May 31 by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy.
Obama has attained rock star status on the campaign trail even though he's behind Hillary Clinton in the voter polls. Obama received positive coverage in 47% of all stories about him. But the study also found that Obama seemed to be slipping after May, with more neutral and negative stories. Some 46% of the stories about Thompson had been positive with only 4% negative about his candidacy.
Thompson's GOP rival McCain suffered 48% negative coverage and only 12% of what the study considered positive, mostly due to his falling behind in the polls and fund-raising. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani had more negative than positive stories done about him, however, while Clinton had 38% negative and 27% positive stories. Five candidates received half of all coverage.
Two of the world's most famous meteorites failed to attract buyers at an auction Sunday, while an ordinary metal mailbox zapped by a falling space rock in 1984 was sold for the unearthly price of nearly $83,000.
A 30-pound chunk of the Willamette Meteorite, which was found in Oregon in 1902 and has been steeped in ownership controversies for more than a century, was offered by Bonhams auction house at an estimated value of $1.3 million but was withdrawn from sale after bidding ended at $300,000.
Similarly, the 1,410-pound Brenham Main Mass, dug out of a Kansas farm field in 2005, was withdrawn by Bonhams CEO and auctioneer Malcolm Barber after it drew a top bid of only $200,000 - well short of the pre-sale estimate of $630,000 to $700,000.
The Valera Meteorite, noteworthy as the only space rock documented to have caused a fatality on Earth, was sold for $1,554. Its victim in 1972 was a cow in Venezuela.

Robert Goulet, the handsome, big-voiced baritone whose Broadway debut in "Camelot" launched an award-winning stage and recording career, has died. He was 73.
He had been awaiting a lung transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after being found last month to have a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis.
Goulet had remained in good spirits even as he waited for the transplant, said Vera Goulet, his wife of 25 years.
The Massachusetts-born Goulet, who spent much of his youth in Canada, gained stardom in 1960 with "Camelot," the Lerner and Loewe musical that starred Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as his Queen Guenevere.
He became a hit with American TV viewers with appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other programs. Sullivan labeled him the "American baritone from Canada," where he had already been a popular star in the 1950s, hosting his own show called "General Electric's Showtime."
