On this excellent album you’ll find killer ‘Ween tracks like “Papa Was A Ghostbuster” ( Ray Parker Jr. vs The Temptations ), “Somebody’s Watching Thriller” ( Rockwell vs Michael Jackson ), “Focussin’ On The Devil” ( Van Halen vs Ariana Grande vs Anton LaVey ) & a dozen more palpitating pairings.
On Schmolli’s site there’s mirror links to ensure you access to “Frankentunes”, & there’s much more album & single content that never goes near Halloween content. I didn’t realize they celebrated Halloween in Austria, but DJ Schmolli sure has the spirit! Big thanks to him for providing this superb comp.
Hope you find it to be your idea of suitable Samhain music. There’ll be a Monster Mashup set, one with DJ Schmolli, one with my Halloween stuff, & a final closing set of AtoZ cuts.
• On a voyage, Mark Twain and Chauncey Depew were asked to speak after dinner. Mr. Twain spoke for 20 minutes and was a huge hit with the audience. Mr. Depew then arose and said, “Mr. Toastmaster and Ladies and Gentlemen, before this dinner Mark Twain and I made an agreement to trade speeches. He has just delivered my speech, and I thank you for the pleasant manner in which you received it. I regret to say that I have lost the notes of his speech and cannot remember anything he has to say.” Mr. Depew then sat down to much laughter. The next day a passenger on the ship said to Mr. Twain, “I consider you were much imposed upon last night. I have always heard that Mr. Depew is a clever man, but really, that speech of his you made last night struck me as being the most infernal rot.”
• After becoming famous, Erma Bombeck was often asked to do more public speaking across the country than any one person could do. Being a humorist, she found a comic way to politely say no to many requests: “I can’t be gone more than two days because that’s all the underwear we have.”
Parents
• Young people’s novelist William Sleator grew up in a family of nonconformists at a time when conformity was a part of American life. (Unfortunately, that description doesn’t much narrow down when he grew up.) His best friend’s mother was a typical 1950s TV sitcom wife with a very clean house (and plastic covering the furniture), perfectly made-up face and hair, and no job. Meanwhile, William and his friend used to go to William’s house and do such fun activities as standing on the back porch railing and peeing into the backyard. (It’s a guy thing.) William’s mother was definitely laid-back. After William made the mistake of asking his best friend to spend the night, his best friend’s mother came over to meet the rest of William’s family. She was not impressed by what she saw. Mrs. Sleator was potting plants in the kitchen table, meaning dirt was present. Vicky, William’s sister, came into the kitchen, dropped an apple accidentally on the floor, then bit into the apple without first washing it. The best friend’s mother was shocked, but Mrs. Sleator — who worked as a pediatrician — explained, “It’s good for them to eat dirt off the floor. Dirt builds up immunity. I never wash food, never sterilized a bottle in my life. And my kids are never sick.” This did not go over well with the best friend’s mother, who was also shocked when Danny, one of William’s younger siblings, came into the kitchen while sucking his thumb. The best friend’s mother told Danny, “It’s not good to suck your thumb, dear.” Danny slowly took his thumb out of his mouth, but by then Mrs. Sleator was fed up and told her young son, “Danny, put your thumb back in your mouth.” Not surprisingly, the best friend’s mother decided not to allow her son to stay the night at the Sleators’ house.
• The mother of Anne McCaffrey, author of the Pern novels about telepathic dragons, had certain feelings that she ought to do one thing or another. For example, she once had the feeling that she ought to take the family’s money out of the stock market, so she did — right before the October stock market crash in 1929. Because of her special “sight,” her family escaped the brunt of the Great Depression. Anne’s father also had the “sight.” While serving in Italy during World War II, he felt that he should stop the car he was being transported in, so he did — then he discovered that the bridge that was supposed to have been just a few feet ahead was gone. If he had not stopped the car, he and his driver would have plunged into a ravine.
Released in May 1975, this song recorded by Glen Campbell topped both the country and Hot 100 charts simultaneously that September. What is the title of this tribute to survival?
"Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" is a song written by Irving Taylor and performed by Edward Byrnes and Connie Stevens. The single was produced by Karl Engemann and arranged by Don Ralke, and was featured on Byrnes' 1959 album, Kookie Star of "77 Sunset Strip".
It was based on Byrnes' character from the television show, 77 Sunset Strip. The song is mostly spoken, except when Kookie sings the bridge section: "I've got smog in my noggin' ever since you made the scene...", and makes use of Beatnik slang. Connie continually interrupts him, asking him to lend her his comb. When he finally asks her, "What's with this comb caper, baby?...", she says she wants him to stop combing his hair and kiss her. Kookie likes the sound of that, ending up saying, "Baby, you're the ginchiest!".
It reached No. 4 on the U.S. pop chart, No. 27 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 30 on the U.S. R&B chart in 1959, and ranked No. 37 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1959.

Comb. “Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)” was a song on Edward Byrnes’ 1959 album, “Kookie Star of 77 Sunset Strip.” Wiki tells us that “77 Sunset Strip” was a TV show and Byrnes’ character was named Kookie who was constantly combing his greasy D.A. type haircut, as one did back in those days. Another bit of trivia is that the D.A. means “Duck’s Ass,” as it is also called a Ducktail. “77 Sunset Strip” was a bit adult for me back then, my TV fare was stuff like “Captain Kangaroo” and “Space Angel.” Also I didn’t know Connie Stevens was a singer.

As part of an expansive, multiyear deal with Apple, the Emmy-drenched former writer, producer and host of The Daily Show is set to front an all-new current affairs series for the streaming service. The show, which will run for multiple seasons, puts Stewart back in the anchor’s chair as he explores a host of topics at the center of both the national conversation and his own advocacy work.
The still-untitled show, which will feature hourlong, single-subject episodes, will be executive produced by Stewart through his company Busboy Productions. In his role as EP, he’ll be joined by his longtime manager James Dixon and former HBO chief Richard Plepler, who via his EDEN Productions also has a rich deal at Apple. A showrunner for the forthcoming series, for which Apple is expected to offer a companion podcast, has yet to be named.
For Apple, nabbing Stewart’s Daily Show follow-up is a major coup. In his nearly two decades as host of the Comedy Central series, he earned 20 Emmys – including 10 consecutive outstanding variety series wins – and almost single-handedly redefined political satire in American culture. Though Stewart’s new entry won’t have a nightly or even weekly cadence, it’s poised to thrust Apple TV+ into the national dialogue in a richer way. In that effort, it joins another timely interviews series, The Oprah Conversation, at the streamer.
Hosting Virtual Rocky Horror Picture Show Screening
Tim Curry
Screen icon Tim Curry will return to one of his most famous films when he hosts a virtual screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. The event will raise money for the Wisconsin Democratic party, a battleground state where former Vice President Joe Biden holds a slim lead in the polls over incumbent President Donald Trump.
The Rocky Horror Show Halloween Livestream will take place just days before the November 3 general election and requires a donation in order to virtually attend, with the suggested amount coming in at $31. It will air one-time only on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET.
Curry, 74, will be joined by an all-star cast who will read through the show, including Wilmer Valderrama, Lance Bass, Rosario Dawson, Jason George, Nell Campbell, Seth Green, Jason Alexander, David Arquette, and more.
Performers during the benefit also include the Dresden Dolls, Miss Peppermint, Eiza Gonzalez, Ben Barnes, Jenna Ushkowitz, Rachel Bloom, Karen Olivo, Marissa Jaret Winkour, David Anders, Madison Uphoff, Kalen Chase, and Rumer Willis.
The famous red lips haven’t turned blue in the newly adapted “Rocky Horror Picture Show” imagery because they’ve spent too much time on the slab. The color scheme is emblematic of Tenacious D’s goal in doing an all-star remake of “The Time Warp” that has a “Rock-y the Vote” message — specifically, to vote blue or, as the revised lyrics have it, make “a jump to the left and not a step to the right.”
Beyond incorporating clips from the original 1975 movie musical, Jack Black and Kyle Gass enlisted a couple of key Democratic politicos for the new music video — former presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg — as well as a range of celebrities including George Takei, Phoebe Bridgers, Jamie Lee Curtis and King Princess.
The most notable cameo may be that of Susan Sarandon, who, of course, starred in the original film, although she was a mere onlooker to the original “Time Warp” dance number. Sarandon may be the one star in the video who deeply polarizes those who have already “jumped to the left,” as she has drawn Democratic fire for speaking out against several of the party’s presidential contenders over the years — although the actress did recently endorse voting for Joe Biden as “a vote against fascism” and “the lesser of two evils.”
Others putting in instructive spoken-word appearances in the video, in lieu of Charles Gray, include Sarah Silverman, John Waters, Karen O, Reggie Watts, Ezra Miller, Ilana Glazer, John Heilemann, Eric Andre, Peaches and Michael Peña.
MGM won a heated film rights auction and will partner with black-ish creator Kenya Barris for a movie on iconic comedian Richard Pryor. Barris will make his directorial debut on a film he will write. The producers are Barris and his Khalabo Ink Society, Jennifer Lee Pryor and her Tarnished Angel and Tory Metzger for Levantine Films. Adam Rosenberg and Levantine’s Renee Witt will serve as executive producers.
This comes after the studio acquired rights for a biopic on Sammy Davis Jr.
Hollywood has long been fixated in turning Pryor’s life into a narrative film, which the comic kind of did after lighting himself on fire in a freebasing accident. He includes that in Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling back in 1986. The most serious attempt to mount a movie came in 2016, when The Weinstein Company and Pryor’s widow Jennifer teamed with director Lee Daniels on a script by Bill Condon and Danny Strong that was going to star Mike Epps as Pryor, with Oprah Winfrey playing Pryor’s grandmother, who ran a brothel and raised the iconic comic there; Eddie Murphy as Pryor’s father, Leroy “Buck Carter” Pryor and Kate Hudson to play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer. The film never made it to the start line.
Said Jennifer Lee Pryor, “Having had a front row seat to much of Richard’s life, I am excited that the mystery of his genius is finally going to be explored and Kenya Barris is the perfect person to do it. Richard and Kenya are creative brothers.”
Conan O'Brien is opening up about an incident on the makeshift set of his late night talk show.
During Monday's broadcast of Conan, the 57-year-old comedian — who had set up his show at Los Angeles' famed Largo at the Coronet nightclub as a way to help entertainment venues affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — revealed that "someone broke into our little theater and took some of our equipment."
According to field producer Jason Chillemi, the culprit made off with several laptops used to conduct Zoom interviews and the show's wooden clapperboard, a device that helps in the synchronizing of picture and audio.
"That's the lowest. I can't think of anything lower," O'Brien remarked after he was informed of what was stolen from the set. "Okay, the laptops — fine. [But] you took the slate? That's crazy."
A senior U.S. official appointed by President Donald Trump (R-Thug) has scrapped a federal regulation designed to protect the editorial independence of Voice of America and other U.S.-funded media outlets, amid accusations he is undermining the journalistic credibility of the broadcasters.
Michael Pack, CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media who rescinded the editorial “firewall” regulation late Monday night, said the federal rule was legally flawed, infringed on the president’s right to conduct U.S. foreign policy and was "unworkable.”
Reporters at the U.S.-funded broadcasters have accused Pack of trying to turn the service into a mouthpiece for Trump, and former executives said they expected legal challenges to the decision.
The federal regulation granting editorial independence was introduced in June by an outgoing board of governors that used to oversee the U.S.-funded broadcasters. The board was dissolved once Pack was confirmed by the Senate in a party-line vote as CEO of the U.S. Global Media Agency (USAGM), the parent agency for Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other federally funded broadcasters.
The regulation, titled “Firewall and Highest Standards of Professional Journalism,” had prohibited any interference in the editorial work of the U.S. media outlets. It barred executives or officials outside the newsroom from “attempts to direct, pressure, coerce, threaten, interfere with, or otherwise impermissibly influence any of the USAGM Networks, including their leadership, officers, employees, or staff, in the performance of their journalistic and broadcasting duties and activities.”
When the first "Borat" movie came out in 2006, Kazakhstan reacted by banning the film, threatening to sue its creator, Sacha Baron Cohen, and buying a four-page ad in American newspapers packed with positive stories about the Central Asian country.
What a difference 14 years makes.
After the sequel, "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm," was released last week, the Kazakh tourist board adopted one of the character's well-worn sayings, "Very nice!" as one of its own slogans.
In a series of 12-second, social media-friendly clips, one visitor is seen climbing through a stunning mountain range, another drinks Kazakh fermented tea, and a third admires one of the country's modern skylines — all exclaiming: "Very nice!"
The strategy is a headline-grabbing piece of PR at a time when global tourism has been strangled by Covid-19. But leaning into Borat's world is a left-field move given that the films depict this predominantly Muslim, ex-Soviet republic of 18 million people as a backward land populated by misogynists and anti-Semites.
Belgium's former King Albert has met his daughter Delphine for the first time, after she won a seven-year legal battle to prove that he is her father, earning recognition as a princess.
The two met Albert's wife, Queen Paola, last Sunday at their royal residence, the Belvedere castle, in the Brussels suburb of Laeken, the royal household said on Tuesday.
Delphine Boel, 52, a Belgian artist, fought a seven-year legal battle to prove that the former king is her father. After a DNA test confirmed that, a court granted her the title of princess earlier this month. Albert, 86, who abdicated six years ago in favour of his son Philippe, had long contested Boel's claim.
She has since changed her surname from Boel to Saxe-Cobourg, her father's family name.
A Philippine police officer was killed during a raid on an illegal cockfight after a rooster's blade sliced his femoral artery, an official said Tuesday.
Cockfighting is a popular blood sport in the archipelago where money is bet on the outcome of a fight -- often to the death -- between two colourful birds armed with bladed spurs.
It has been banned along with other sporting and cultural events during the coronavirus pandemic to prevent large crowds from gathering and spreading the contagion.
Monday's freak accident in the central province of Northern Samar happened when Lieutenant Christian Bolok picked up a fighting cock as he gathered evidence of the unlawful event.
Its blade struck his left thigh and he bled to death, provincial police chief Colonel Arnel Apud told AFP.
