M Is FOR MASHUP - October 17th, 2012 (The Year of the Mashup Album)
Bats, Beatles And Bootlegging
By DJ Useo
Just a few days over one year ago, I posted a mashup with the Beatles singing over some spooky music from their movie "YELLOW SUBMARINE". A reply was left commenting that there should be an entire album of Beatles Halloween mashups. Accomplished mixer DmR of AtoZ really dug that suggestion, so for the past year, he mixed & cajoled others to mix Beatles Halloween mashups. I understand he maintains a steady job also. ;) Now, at the appropriate moment, the final release 'YOU CAN'T MASH THAT Volume 31 : Beatleween' has appeared from out of fog & swirling darkness, not unlike the final moments when Death strikes.
So many times mashers are told to go for the genre clash when mixing, that is to say, use opposing styles. Of course, the listeners want highly complimentary pairings, but 2 dance songs mixed together sounds like 2 dance songs mixed together. But hip hop put to a cobbled-together rock song loop sounds like a mashup! This brings us to this new BEATLEWEEN collection. It goes WAAAY beyond Beatles tunes into an entirely-new arena of music. There's Beatles vs Blink 182, Harry Nilsson, Human League, Jimi Hendrix, The Wizard Of Oz, & so much more. But here's the catch! It all sounds completely Halloween-like. I've heard many a Halloween mashup album, & this is certainly one of the best. Sure, I got some tracks on it, but that's not why I say it's so great. There's a long, single-track version with extra sound effects & spooky samples that proves my point the most. I can't imagine a better Hallloween listen, party or not. It really has that aura of fear, yet somehow the Beatles music & the added parts congeal into one engaging, memorable play.
Huge praise goes out to DmR of AtoZ for his significant contributions to this release. He did the majority of work on it, including the artwork & the notable liner notes. There's also tracks from TJT, MP3J, & yours truly. Now, to clarify, you can

& find a thread with even-more detailed info on this collection, including the download links for the individual tracks file, or the long, single-track file. All gratis! Yes, we're assuming you're in costume by allowing this literally free bowl of mashups for all of you to be left sitting out like this. Have your fill, though! It's what makes us happy! Now, if you will excuse me, I've got some apple-bobbing to attend to.
Mix Of The Week
The mix of the week this week is Mr Automatic's 'Mr Automatic 2012 Halloween Mix'. Mr. Automatic says of it "So, once a year I get to pull out all of the really weird records and edits I have and put together a set for halloween. This is more of a listening mix, than a dance mix, and the genres go from sountrack music to garage rock to italo. Enjoy!" It's got an very interesting playlist.

As for the Prop. 30 tax increase that has so many folks screaming? Aside from an income tax increase for seven years for individuals who make more than $250,000 and for families who make more than $500,000, there'd be a quarter-cent sales tax increase for four years. That means that if you buy a cup of coffee and a doughnut for $4, you'll owe an additional cent. Six million kids, the future of the state, would appreciate the sacrifice.

Autumn goldfinches in Michigan... A male (L) and female (R) at my thistle seed feeder. I never ceases to amaze me how the male turns to this from summer's bright yellow. Set For Super Bowl Halftime
Beyoncé
All the single ladies will be watching the upcoming Super Bowl along with football lovers. That's because Beyoncé is the halftime show performer.
A source familiar with the Super Bowl told The Associated Press the Grammy-winning diva will take the stage at the halftime show on Feb. 3, 2013, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because that person wasn't authorized to publicly reveal the information.
The official announcement is expected Wednesday, the source said.
Beyoncé, whose pop and R&B hits include "Crazy in Love," ''Irreplaceable" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," has won 16 Grammy Awards. The 31-year-old sang the national anthem at the 2004 Super Bowl in her hometown of Houston when the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers.

Artifacts Collection To Be Sold
Titanic
Artifacts recovered from the wreck of the Titanic are set to be sold for $189 million by Premier Exhibitions Inc, the company that holds the salvage rights to the doomed ocean liner.
The wreck, discovered by explorer Robert Ballard in 1985, has yielded more than 5,500 artifacts for Premier, which has made eight expeditions to the ship since 1987.
The exhibition items range from delicate porcelain dishes and silver cutlery to a 17-ton section of the hull, complete with portholes, pulled from the Atlantic seabed where the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank 100 years ago with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
The company had been looking to sell its Titanic interests to concentrate on touring exhibitions but a federal court ruled last year that a sale must ensure that the entire Titanic collection is kept together.
Premier, through its RMS Titanic Inc subsidiary, is the only company permitted to recover objects from the Titanic, since it was granted salvor-in-possession rights by a U.S. court in 1994.

Robinson Crusoé Film Resurfaces
Georges Méliès
"It's a very important piece of cinema history, which was not known until Saturday night," says David Robinson, director of the Giornate del Cinema Muto, the annual silent film festival in Pordenone, north Italy. He's talking about a film that is just 12 and a half minutes long, but one that sheds light on the man he calls the "first artist of the cinema": Georges Méliès, director of hundreds of magical films, many of which have been lost.
Méliès's best known film is, of course, Le Voyage Dans La Lune, but Les Aventures de Robinson Crusoé, the newly discovered film, is an even more ambitious work; a landmark in the history of narrative cinema.
It is also a piece that illuminates much about Méliès's tragic personal life. Making a hit movie brings problems as well as profits, as Méliès learned in 1902. His big-budget (10,000-franc) spectacular Voyage was released in September that year, and it was an outrageous success. It still is: in the years since its release its fame has only multiplied. The recent restoration of an original, coloured copy of the film and its lionisation in Martin Scorsese's Hugo are only the most recent nods to the master of Montreuil's lunar voyage.
One hundred and 10 years ago, though, Méliès was a worried man. In the first place, he was dismayed by the pirate copies of Voyage that were being shown in the States. American film-maker Thomas Edison had his technicians make copies on the sly, which he then distributed without paying any fee to Star Film, Méliès's studio. It was a worrying development, and one that contributed ultimately to Méliès's bankruptcy in the following decade. Added to his financial worries, Méliès had the pressure of creating a followup that could contend with Voyage's indelible image of a rocket spearing the eye of the man in the moon.

Conservative Family Values
Dinesh D'Souza
A "scholar" behind a high-grossing conservative documentary that condemns President Barack Obama is under investigation by the evangelical college he leads in New York.
The board of The King's College is questioning school president Dinesh D'Souza about his relationship with a woman who is not his wife.
The newsmagazine WORLD reports D'Souza last month attended a conference on Christian values with a woman he called his fiancee. Event organizers told WORLD they confronted D'Souza after learning he and the woman shared a hotel room. D'Souza filed for divorce in California a few days later.
D'Souza told The Associated Press on Tuesday he and his wife have been separated for two years. He denies staying in the hotel room with the other woman.

Major Art Heist
Kunsthal Museum
Thieves broke into a Rotterdam museum on Tuesday and walked off with works from the likes of Picasso, Monet, Gauguin and Matisse potentially worth hundreds of millions.
Police haven't said how they pulled off the early hours heist, but an expert who tracks stolen art said the robbers clearly knew what they were after.
The heist at the Kunsthal museum is one of the largest in years in the Netherlands, and is a stunning blow for the private Triton Foundation collection, which was being exhibited publicly as a group for the first time.
They were: Pablo Picasso's 1971 "Harlequin Head"; Claude Monet's 1901 "Waterloo Bridge, London" and "Charing Cross Bridge, London"; Henri Matisse's 1919 "Reading Girl in White and Yellow"; Paul Gauguin's 1898 "Girl in Front of Open Window"; Meyer de Haan's "Self-Portrait," around 1890, and Lucian Freud's 2002 work "Woman with Eyes Closed."

Judge Dismisses Discrimination Case
'The Bachelor'
A federal judge on Monday dismissed a case filed by two black men who claimed ABC's reality dating shows, "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette," discriminated against casting participants of colour.
U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger's ruling states that casting decisions by the TV network and the series' producers are protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech and the case should not continue.
Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson sued ABC in April, claiming their bids to appear on "The Bachelor" were never given serious consideration. They claimed the show and its spinoff "The Bachelorette" discriminated against nonwhite participants.
At the time of the lawsuit's filing, all of the men given star billing in the first 16 seasons of "The Bachelor" were white. Through seven seasons of "The Bachelorette," two male Hispanic contestants were selected winners and the rest were white.

Greek State TV Cuts Gay Kiss
Downton Abbey
Greek state television came under fire from the country's main opposition party and critics for editing out a gay kiss on Monday's primetime premiere of popular British period drama "Downton Abbey".
Greeks took to social networking sites such as Twitter to complain about the NET channel's decision to axe a scene from episode one of the series showing a kiss between a visiting duke and Downton's unscrupulous footman Thomas. NET defended its move, citing parental guidance viewing rules.
Greek state television said the kiss was not censored but rather edited out to comply with rules on the time slot and parental consent label given to the show, which was aired at 10:05 p.m. An unedited version will be broadcast later on Tuesday night, it said.
Greece has seen an upsurge in right-wing extremism since a national election in June ushered the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn party to parliament for the first time in its history.

Son, Ex-Wife Arrested
Dick Dale
The son and ex-wife of 1960s "King of the Surf Guitar" Dick Dale were arrested after they allegedly blew up a propane tank in a Southern California desert town.
Jill Monsour, 45, and James Monsour, 20, were arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive device in public. They remained jailed Tuesday on $500,000 bail each, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department website.
They were arrested at about 3:30 a.m. Monday near Dale's isolated home in Wonder Valley, radio station KCDZ-FM reported.
Investigators determined that the Monsours placed a 5-gallon tank of propane on top of burning woodpile and then shot it with a gun, causing it to explode, the station reported.
Dale, who said he is fighting cancer and other illnesses, added that his medical expenses make it impossible for him to provide bail for his son and ex-wife.

Reelected At Subdued Meeting
Rupert
Rupert Murdoch survived yet another attempt to oust him as chairman of his News Corp media empire on Tuesday, the second straight year he has defeated critics who say his family wields too much control over the company.
Shareholders re-elected Murdoch, his two sons, Lachlan and James, and the rest of the company's returning board members during a 75-minute meeting in Los Angeles. They also voted against proposals that would have separated the chairman and CEO roles held by Murdoch and eliminated News Corp's dual class stock structure, which gives the Murdoch family voting control of the company.
Only 5 percent of investors voted against re-electing Murdoch during this year's meeting. James, who was seated in the front row, received a 17 percent against reelection vote, while 21 percent of shareholders voted against reelecting Lachlan, who did not attend the event.
A year ago, about 16 percent of investors voted against Murdoch. James and Lachlan fared worse, with about 35 percent of shareholders voting against their re-election to the board. But the Murdochs were still reelected because they control 40 percent of the voting rights.
In addition to the Murdochs, News Corp's 14-member board includes News Corp president and chief operating officer, Chase Carey, and former assistant attorney general Viet Dinh, who spearheaded internal investigations of the hacking scandal. Investors also voted to elect new board additions: Elaine "Mrs. Mitch McConnell" Chao, former U.S. labor secretary, and former Colombia Prime Minister Alvaro Uribe.

Charm Fall Flat
Paul Ryan
In the land of his ancestors, Paul Ryan's Irish charm is failing him.
"He doesn't have the charisma, he hasn't connected with the people," said Pat Nolan as he strolled passed the 13th century stone church in the village of Graiguenamanagh where Ryan's great-great grandparents were married.
A straw poll of 20 people on a recent afternoon found 12 Obama supporters and none for Ryan and running mate Mitt Romney.
Ninety-six percent of people in Ireland who have decided would back Obama and Irish Catholic running mate Joe Biden if they had a vote, according to a September poll of 1,000 people by Gallup International.
"He's too far right-wing for this part of the world," said Martin Brett, the former mayor of the county's capital Kilkenny, who hosted Ryan's uncle when he came to trace his roots in the region a few years ago.

Closing 115 Locations
University of Phoenix
Apollo Group Inc. said Tuesday that its fiscal fourth-quarter net income tumbled 60 percent, hurt by higher costs and declining enrollment at the University of Phoenix. To cope, the for-profit education company plans to close 115 of the university's mostly smaller locations, a move that will affect 13,000 students.
Shares in the Phoenix-based company tumbled nearly 9 percent in after-hours trading.
The closings include 25 main campuses and 90 smaller satellite learning centers. At least one location in 30 states is slated to be shuttered.
University of Phoenix currently has about 328,000 students, down from a peak of more than 400,000. Following the closures, it will be left with 112 locations in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The announcement comes as enrollments overall in the for-profit sector are declining after years of rapid growth, even as enrollment in other sectors of higher education rises. Recent federal figures showed enrollment in for-profits fell 2.9 percent in 2011. The sector has faced tighter regulations and more pressure to enroll students who have a better chance of graduating.

In Memory
Jackie Guthrie
Folk singer Arlo Guthrie has announced the death of his wife, Jackie, at age 68.
Jackie Guthrie had inoperable cancer and died Sunday at the couple's winter home in Sebastian, Fla., according to an obituary released by Arlo Guthrie's record label. The couple had recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.
Jackie Guthrie was from Salt Lake City and grew up in Malibu, Calif. She met Arlo Guthrie in 1968 while working as a cashier at the Troubadour, the Hollywood nightclub that was an epicenter for folk music at the time. Before they'd even met, Jackie walked into the dressing room and told Arlo's step brother that she would marry Arlo, according to the obituary, released Monday by Guthrie's label, Rising Son Records.
The next year, the couple purchased a 250-acre property called "The Farm" that the family still owns in Washington, in western Massachusetts. They were married on the front lawn in October of that year.
The couple raised four children, and in recent years the family toured together, with Jackie Guthrie working as the videographer. This past summer, the family toured to celebrate the centennial birthday of Arlo's father, folk singer Woody Guthrie, and Jackie became so weak she could barely hold up the camera, according to the obituary. In early September, she was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer.
On his Facebook page, Arlo Guthrie said he's cancelling or postponing some upcoming shows and will begin a planned tour in Canada next week.
Jackie Guthrie is survived by her four children with Arlo Guthrie; her daughter with singer David Crosby; and 10 grandchildren.
