Astro Mashups From The Institute of Bootleggers
By DJ Useo
Here you go with more nifty blends. This time it's a smart disc of 19 newly posted audio gems from 19 popular mashup producers. There's all kinds of styles contained, & all display the bootlegger in a finest kind light. Everyone dips into the sounds they love, & the results are most telling.
Currently, I think I'm the most familiar with this set of tunes, after compiling, & mastering them, I've enjoyed them all many times. This places me in a strong position of confidence in stating that this lives up to the promise of earlier IOB comps.
In my mind, the source artists used are important choices, but the mixer is of paramount importance. Featured on this discs worth of delights are folk like DJ's From Mars, MightyMike, SkiBiLiBoP, XaM, & many more. Everybody is refined in their approach with many years of honed skills on display.
On top of who mixed, there's also the lure of who they mixed, artists like Bruno Mars, Ke$ha, The Weeknd, all pared with stars like Chicago, The Beastie Boys, Bob Marley, James Brown, & Die Antwoord. It's like putting all your faves in a blender that makes the world's greatest beverage.
In the flood of the modern mashup scene, this collection allows a swell overview of whats occurring right now, & those who are doing it. The collection comes with animated gif cover, single covers of each cut, full text & mastering from me, which I think is pretty good. I thought I was doing a fine job of mastering already, but recent advances in production software affords me an even better chance of giving you only the best listening experience. Personally, I saved the uncompressed files for my personal listening, but I think you'll find these among the best mp3's available.

There's also many other mashup collections still available on the blog, if
you want to stock up for winter. Current plans call for the next IOB comp
to appear in December. As always, they come gratis to all. Tips are welcome.

Paul Krugman: God Is Now Trump's Co-Conspirator (NY Times Column)
Listening to the speech William Barr, the attorney general, gave last week at the University of Notre Dame Law School, I found myself thinking of the title of an old movie: "God Is My Co-Pilot." What I realized is that Donald Trump's minions have now gone that title one better: If Barr's speech is any indication, their strategy is to make God their boss's co-conspirator.

And as for the "blurred lines" lyric? The lines here aren't between rape and consensual sex. As others have pointed out-and as Thicke mentioned in an interview with Billboard-it could definitely refer to the tired, overused good-girl-with-a-freaky-streak fantasy. Or, perhaps it really is about getting mixed signals from a lady who you think might be interested in doing the deed-and then letting her know exactly where you stand so she can make the next move-if she wants.

2020 Nominees
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The 16 nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2020 were announced Tuesday, and a whopping nine of them - most notably two of the only three female artists on the ballot, Whitney Houston and Pat Benatar - are first-time nominees.
It's shocking that Houston - the most awarded female artist ever by Guinness World Records, one of music's best-selling artists, a six-time Grammy-winner, and one of the greatest singers of all time - has never been up for the Hall before, and that she wasn't inducted during her lifetime. (She became eligible in 2010, two years before her death.) It is possible that her lack of previous recognition was due to a lack of songwriting credits, or because her music was not "rock." But considering that powerhouse soul divas like Aretha Franklin and Donna Summer and Houston's '80s pop contemporaries Madonna and Janet Jackson are in the Hall, Houston's nomination is well-deserved and long overdue.
The fact that Benatar - another one of the most successful female artists of the 1980s, and most definitely a rock artist - has never been nominated before has been a subject of yearly Hall protest, so she will likely do well in the fan vote. The other first-time nominees this year are the Notorious B.I.G., the Dave Matthews Band, the Doobie Brothers, Motörhead, Soundgarden, T. Rex, and Thin Lizzy.
The next batch of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in January after more than 1,000 members cast their votes; fans also can vote on the Rock Hall's website. The 2020 induction ceremony will take place May 2 in Cleveland, where the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is located.

HBO Max To Stream
'The West Wing'
HBO Max is set to stream The West Wing when the service launches next year. Bob Greenblatt, Chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer, revealed that the Martin Sheen-fronted political drama will be the latest high-profile series to move to the streaming service. It currently airs on Netflix in the U.S.
It comes after the AT&T-owned digital platform picked up classic sitcoms Friends and The Big Bang Theory.
The Aaron Sorkin-created series ran from September 1999-May 2006 on NBC with over 150 episodes. It won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for each of its first four seasons from 2000-03.
Greenblatt, speaking at a Mipcom keynote in Cannes, said that mining the Warner Bros library for titles for the service was a big part of the HBO Max plan.

The Matrix 4
Neil Patrick Harris
The digital world of the Matrix has added another surprising name to its new cast.
Variety reports (and THR has since also posted) that A Series of Unfortunate Events and How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris is the fourth cast member to join the recently announced Matrix continuation.
No details about his character are available, but Patrick will be joining fellow series newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, alongside Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss, reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
Lana Wachowski will direct the picture-intriguingly a solo project for now without her sister Lily, who she collaborated with on the original Matrix trilogy, and co-wrote the script alongside Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, ahead of a planned 2020 production start.

Pulled From Schedule
'Sunnyside'
This week's upcoming fourth episode of new NBC comedy Sunnyside will be the last on the linear network. Staring the following Thursday, October 24, NBC will debut the 11th and final season of Will & Grace in Sunnyside's Thursday 9:30 PM slot.
NBC has ordered an additional episode of Sunnyside, bringing its order from 10 to 11. The remaining seven episodes will air weekly on the NBC app, other digital platforms and NBC.com. The series currently is in production on Episode 9 and will compete all 11 episodes.
Sunnyside opened to a 0.4 18-49 rating and 1.78 million viewers in L+SD, numbers that never been seen for a Big 4 in-season scripted series debut.
While its linear performance has been soft, possibly hurting its 10 p.m. lead-out, veteran drama Law & Order: SVU, the comedy starring Kal Penn has generated enough of an increase through digital and linear delayed viewing to warrant a digital play of the remaining episodes. The 18-49 rating for its premiere has grown by 150% versus Live+Same Day (though off a very small base), from a 0.4 to a 1.0. The Sunnyside opener also was the second-most social broadcast comedy premiere by Total Activity during Premiere Week and was NBC's most social broadcast comedy premiere in two years, according to the network. Additionally, Sunnyside has the No. 4 most affluent and the No. 3 most educated audience among broadcast series, also per NBC.
Last season Will & Grace averaged a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers in Live+7, building on its lead-in by double-digits. After 35 days of digital and linear delayed viewing, those Will & Grace season averages grew to 2.3 rating in 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers overall.

Gary Glitter
Joker
Joker, a boring movie we've spent entirely too much time talking about at this point, has rightfully come under fire for prominently featuring "Rock n' Roll Part 2," a song performed by sex offender Gary Glitter.
Glitter (real name Paul Gadd) is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence for "attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under 13." Glitter's convicted sex offenses (which are numerous) date back to 1997. Warner Bros. could have easily avoided this bit of controversy by simply not including the song in the film, but apparently, someone felt as if it was absolutely necessary, and so here we are.
Initially, there were concerns that Glitter would profit from the song's inclusion in the film, which continues to dominate at the box office. The chatter has now prompted Snapper Music, the label that owns the rights to "Rock n' Roll Part 2," to issue a statement making clear that Glitter himself isn't making any money courtesy of the clown movie. What's important to understand is that Glitter sold the rights to his discography to Snapper a number of years ago, and thus the label is now responsible for how-if at all-the music is ever used. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, a representative from Snapper Music stated:
"Gary Glitter does not get paid. We've had no contact with him."
Here in the U.S., any money generated from the use of Glitter's music goes to the Universal Music Publishing group, which echoed Snapper's sentiments and made a point of stating that it doesn't pay him any royalties.

Gambling Bosses Move To Bar
Nevada
Nevada's gambling regulators have filed a complaint against former casino magnate Steve Wynn that could bar him from ever working in the industry in the state.
The complaint filed Monday by the state's Gaming Control Board lists sexual misconduct allegations that have been lodged against the mogul since January 2018. The complaint asks Nevada's Gaming Commission, which acts on the board's recommendations and has final say on licensing, to fine Wynn and revoke his status as being found suitable to be licensed in the industry.
Gambling licenses are considered a revocable privilege that can be denied or revoked for those who aren't found suitable. Suitability findings can hinge on a background check and any other action deemed "inimical to the public health, safety, morals, good order and general welfare" of Nevada residents or discrediting of the state and its gambling industry.
It's unclear if Wynn had plans to return to the industry after stepping down from his company, Wynn Resorts, in 2018 and selling his company shares.
An investigation by the Nevada gaming control board detailed an allegation that Wynn in 2005 paid $7.5 million to a former salon employee who alleged he raped her and that she became pregnant. The investigation also said a former cocktail server alleged that Wynn pressured her into a nonconsensual sexual relationship from 2005 to 2006 that resulted in the woman and her parents receiving a $975,000 private settlement.

Tribal Map
America
As more and more communities rightfully recognize October 8th as Indigenous People's Day, the question of how best to celebrate indigenous people arises. A good first step is learning about which tribes resided in your specific part of the country before vicious settler colonialism uprooted them or likely worse. Thanks to a mapping company's clever approach to Google Maps, it's possible to learn which native tribes once inhabited your neighborhood.
It's called Native-Land, and it's run by Canadian developer Victor G Temprano. Temprano also runs the company Mapster, which helps to create maps for a wide variety of uses.
"Native-Land.ca started in early 2015," he says on the site's About page, "during a time of a lot of resource development projects in British Columbia. While mapping out pipeline projects and learning more about them for the sake of public awareness, I started to ask myself whose territories all these projects were happening on. Once I started finding the geographic data and mapping… well, it just kind of expanded from there."
From the Trans Mountain pipeline to Dakota Access, oil pipelines are often flashpoints of technological controversy. With Native-Lands, Temprano was able to use cutting-edge mapping to explore the legacy of a wide variety of borders not often seen in the mainstream.
"I feel that Western maps of Indigenous nations are very often inherently colonial," he says on the site, "in that they delegate power according to imposed borders that don't really exist in many nations throughout history. They were rarely created in good faith, and are often used in wrong ways."

Yellow Cardinal
'Sunny'
An exceptionally rare yellow northern cardinal with a genetic color mutation was spotted and photographed in Port St. Lucie on Saturday morning.
Tracy Workman, who teaches photography at a homeschooling organization, said she first spotted the bird in her backyard on Oct. 3.
Nine days later, Workman saw the bird again; this time, she followed it for five minutes with her Canon T5i camera before finally capturing some photographs.
Geoffrey Hill, a professor and curator of birds at Auburn University and an expert on bird coloration, said the bird in Workman's photographs is an adult male northern cardinal with a rare genetic mutation found in the species.
The mutation is analogous to albinism found in humans, Hill said. Like humans, all birds have DNA that is subject to mutations.
