• King Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor, Thomas More, had some novel ideas that he wrote about in his book Utopia. For example, he thought that couples about to be married should see each other naked. In real life, when a lawyer called on him and asked to be married to Megg (Mr. More’s daughter), Mr. More took him to her bedroom, where she was asleep, then swept the covers back and her nightgown up. Rudely awakened, Megg immediately turned over on her stomach. The delighted lawyer said, “I have seen both sides,” then he patted her butt and added, “Thou art mine.”
• Eve Arden became friends with humorist Robert Benchley and even appeared in a movie with him: Pan-Americana. While in Romanoff’s restaurant, Ms. Arden was heading to the ladies room when Mr. Benchley saw her and gave her a note, saying, “Read this later.” She did, and the note said, “Why don’t you give all this up and marry me?” It was only a joke, but it revealed his affection for her.
• Film critic Stuart Klawans, author of Film Follies: The Cinema Out of Order, and his fiancée were out walking when they ran across a street person named “Sarge” whom Mr. Klawans knew. Sarge looked at the fiancée, then told Mr. Klawans, “You’re with a beautiful woman. You got good taste.” Then he told Mr. Klawans’ fiancée, “You got good taste, too. But his is better.”
• Humorous poet Oliver Herford enjoyed having his wife read out loud to him, but he disliked bad things happening to the characters in the writings she read. Therefore, if Mrs. Herford discovered bad things happening to the characters, she would make up a new plot as she read out loud and give the story a happy ending.
• J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, has been married more than once. An in-joke in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban occurs when Professor Trelawny is not looking forward to something that will occur on Friday, October 16 — the date when Ms. Rowling married her first husband in 1992.
• When Walter Tevis, author of the novel The Hustler, first met Jamie, the woman who would become his ex-wife, he showed her some poems that he had written to his former girlfriends. She says that after they were married, these poems became lost — and not by accident.
• When Margaret Mitchell attended the premiere of the movie version of her novel Gone with the Wind, the master of ceremonies asked her husband, “Aren’t you proud of your wife?” He replied, “I was proud of her even before she wrote a book.”
• When Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1816, she was only 18 years old. She was married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and after he died at an early age, she kept his heart, which she wrapped in a piece of linen.
• Queen Margaret of Scotland, aka Saint Margaret, was much loved by her husband, Malcolm. Although he himself was illiterate, he knew that she loved her books, so he used to have their bindings covered with jewels as a gift to her.
Influences and Inspiration
• Children’s book author/illustrator David McPhail believes in taking advantage of inspiration when it strikes. He was awaiting some friends whom he had invited to his house when he was struck by inspiration and began writing Henry Bear’s Park. In the middle of writing the children’s book, he heard a knock at the door. He threw it open, saw his friends, and told them, “I’m in the middle of writing something. Go to the beach and come back in an hour!” An hour later, when they came back, he had finished the children’s book.
This sunshine pop song, written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by the 5th Dimension, cleaned up at the 10th Annual Grammy Awards in 1968, winning for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best Performance by a Vocal Group, Best Performance by a Chorus and Best Contemporary Song. What is the title of this chart topper?
A glass harp (also called musical glasses, singing glasses, angelic organ, verrillon or ghost fiddle) is a musical instrument made of upright wine glasses.
It is played by running moistened or chalked fingers around the rim of the glasses. Each glass is tuned to a different pitch, either by grinding each goblet to the specified pitch, in which case the tuning is invariable, or by filling the glass with water until the desired pitch is achieved.
Musical glasses were documented in Persia in the 14th century. The glass harp was created in 1741 by Irishman Richard Pockrich, who is known as the first virtuoso of the musical glasses. Pockrich called his instrument the "angelic organ" and it was played with sticks, rather than by rubbing the glasses with a moistened finger. It was reported in 1760 that, "Pockrich played Handel's Water Music on the glasses." His successful concert career was brought to a premature end by a fire in which both the inventor and instrument perished in 1759.

A glass harp is made of upright wine glasses, and played by moistening the fingers and running them around the edges. We’ve played with wine glasses occasionally, but our glasses have wine in them, so our music is quite different. Especially after some of that wine has been drunk.
Shoot, I forgot to answer Monday’s TQ, and I knew the answer. When we lived in Lompoc we took a late-night trip to a beach in Santa Barbara and showed the kids what a grunion run was all about. It was a mini Marlin Perkins event, seeing them flip and flop live on the beach in the moonlight. It was very cool.

Wine glasses. I know this because I played the "glass harp" back in high school. My Mom had those wine glasses for years after.

Stevie Wonder released two new songs Tuesday reflecting the current times that he hopes inspires change.
The piano-playing icon dropped the tracks “Where Is Our Love Song” and “Can’t Put It In the Hands of Fate,” which he also announced would be released through his new label So What the Fuss Music, distributed through Universal Music Group’s Republic Records (Wonder was signed to Motown Records for the majority of his career).
The 70-year-old made the announcement during a virtual press conference Tuesday and also gave an update on his health, saying he “was blessed with a new kidney” last December.
All proceeds from “Where Is Our Love Song” — which features Grammy-winning guitarist Gary Clark Jr. — will benefit Feeding America.
“I want everyone to be well," he continued. “I don’t care what color you are because actually I don’t see your color. You see color, don’t act like you don’t see color, you do. But I don’t see your visual color. But I do feel your soul. I do feel your spirit. I see the color of your spirit and soul, and I’m seeing too many spirts and souls that are not about the love that we’re supposed to have and feel for one another."
The teaser kicks off with Homer Simpson rushing to fill out his ballot. But before he can turn it in, he reaches an impasse.
“I know who I want for all the judges and propositions, but president – that’s a stumper. Can I write in Judge Judy?” he asks.
Before writing in the television personality, a mask-wearing Lisa Simpson steps into her indecisive father’s voting booth, hoping to inform his decision for president.
“Dad, by all that’s decent how could you forget all that’s happened in the last four years?” Lisa says, encouraging him to reflect.
Even Mark Hamill knows the "Star Wars Holiday Special" was bad.
"The 'Star Wars Holiday Special' is so notorious [creator] George [Lucas] once asked us, 'Please, never mention it again,'" Hamill said during a conversation with the Dean of the University of Southern California's USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Willow Bay Tuesday evening. The virtual event was part of the school's Amplified series.
The infamous 1978 special only aired once on CBS and was never released on video. It's not even available to stream on Disney Plus. It's supposed to be about Chewbacca's journey home to spend a Wookiee holiday with his family. Bloated with celebrity cameos and segments which make little sense, it's quite painful to get through.
"[Lucas] had to call me and say, 'Please, do this,'" Hamill said. "You've got to remember. This was the Christmas of '78, a year and a half after ['Star Wars: A New Hope'] came out. When he called me and he said, 'Well, I heard you don't want to do it,' I said, 'It's terrible! It's not 'Star Wars.' It's like a Bob Hope special."
"He said, 'Well, we really need to do this for the merchandisers and keep the product alive in people's minds. Do me a favor,'" Hamill continued. "And, of course, I'd do anything for George."
In another historic COVID first, the New York Philharmonic said Tuesday it won’t be resuming live concerts in January as hoped but will return in June, skipping an entire season.
It’s a shock but not a surprise. The news follows the Metropolitan Opera last month canceling its entire season. It won’t open until next September.
NY Phil CEO Deborah Borda said the shift was due to mandatory state and city government health regulations. “With deep regret, all previously scheduled concerts from January 6 to June 13, 2021, must now be cancelled,” she said, noting that shutting down an entire season is a first in the organization’s 178-year history.
The NY Phil is in the process of developing an expanded orchestral live streaming series to be launched in the winter if the authorities allow it. Details should be announced shortly, she said.
Far more Americans have died as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic than have been counted and reported, according to new research published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
"For every two Americans that we know of who are dying of Covid-19, another American is dying," said Dr. Steven Woolf, author of the new research and director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Woolf's study looked at death statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the Census Bureau.
The study found that from March through July, there were 225,530 "excess" deaths — a 20 percent increase over the average number of deaths expected for those months. (Excess deaths refer to the number of fatalities above what would be expected in a typical time period.)
Deaths directly linked to Covid-19 account for 67 percent of those excess deaths, the study found, leaving the remaining 33 percent without a clear explanation.
Two private groups focused on U.S. government ethics on Monday accused Attorney General William Barr (R-Opus Dei) of misusing his office to support President Donald Trump (R-Corrupt)'s political goals and called on the House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against him.
The University of Pennsylvania's Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law and Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said Barr could not be trusted to represent the work of his department accurately and that there were problems with the truthfulness of Barr's public statements.
The groups in a 267-page research paper alleged that Barr's "authoritarian worldview limits the degree to which ... (he) regards himself as bound by the rule of law and makes him see himself as entitled to ignore the laws, ethics and historical practices" at the Justice Department.
The paper highlighted several Barr actions, including what it described as his intentional mischaracterization of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election as well as Barr's move to assign U.S. Attorney John Durham to conduct his own investigation of the Mueller probe.
While Trump has long bristled at the suggestion that foreign interference helped his 2016 upset victory, multiple reviews by U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia acted to undercut his rival Hillary Clinton's chances in that election.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his Democratic challenger, Amy McGrath, faced off in their first and perhaps only debate Monday night. McGrath, a retired Marine combat pilot, criticized McConnell for blocking a new round of COVID-19 economic support, calling it a "dereliction of duty" and failure of leadership. McConnell, oddly, laughed.
McConnell blamed congressional Democrats for blocking another coronavirus relief package, even though he publicly shot down negotiations between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the White House. He also noted that he brings home the bacon in a way McGrath could not from the "back bench" of the Senate. "I allow Kentucky to punch above its weight," McConnell said. "My last term $17.5 billion for the commonwealth that would not have been there had I not been the majority leader of the Senate."
"I think her entire campaign is: she's a Marine, she's a mom, and I've been there (the Senate) too long," McConnell said. McGrath didn't disagree: "Senator, you've been there for 36 years. How's it looking, Kentucky?" McConnell's "one job is to help America through this crisis right now in passing legislation to keep our economy afloat so that people can make ends meet," she added. "And instead of doing that, he is trying to ram through a Supreme Court nominee right now, instead of negotiating, which is what he should have been doing all summer long to make that happen."
McConnell also took several shots at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — and also President Trump, perhaps, who is famously from New York as well.
The biggest World War Two bomb ever found in Poland exploded under water on Tuesday as navy divers tried to defuse it.
More than 750 people had been evacuated from the area near the Piast Canal outside the town of Swinoujscie where the Tallboy bomb used by Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) was found. It weighed nearly 5,400 kg, including 2,400 kg of explosive.
"The deflagration process turned into detonation. The object can be considered as neutralised, it will not pose any more threat," Second-Lieutenant Grzegorz Lewandowski, the spokesman of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, was quoted as saying by state-run news agency PAP.
"All mine divers were outside the danger zone."
The Piast Canal connects the Baltic Sea with the Oder River on Poland's border with Germany. The bomb was dropped by the RAF in 1945 in an attack on the German cruiser Lutzow.
