Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger's signing of the bill establishing "Harvey Milk Day" each May 22, Milk's birthday, was announced Monday.
The Republican governor vetoed similar legislation a year ago. In the interim, Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in August and was the subject of a movie for which Sean Penn won the Academy Award for best actor.
In his veto message a year ago, the Republican governor said Milk should be honored locally by those who were most impacted by his contributions. He did not write a signing message this year saying why he flip-flopped.
Hey, he's just suckin' on that electoral tube-steak while looking towards that next questionably democratic contest. In this context, nearly ALL politicians are "gay."

Birgit Nilsson Prize
Placido Domingo
Spanish tenor Placido Domingo on Tuesday received the first ever US$1-million Birgit Nilsson award at a formal award ceremony in Stockholm.
Domingo, who won the prize for his "unrivalled" contributions to the world of opera, accepted the award from King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Swedish Opera.
Late Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson chose Domingo as the inaugural winner of the prize nearly a decade ago, demanding the name would be kept secret until after her death. She died at age 87 on Dec. 25, 2005.
During the award ceremony, Domingo said he would use the prize money to set up a specific Birgit Nilsson category for Wagnerian singers within the framework of his opera competition Operalia.

Ratings Tanking
Leno
If it was measured in traditional TV terms, "The Jay Leno Show" wouldn't be long for this world.
NBC's bold experiment faltered in the third week of television's new season, with none of its five editions scoring higher than No. 60 in the Nielsen Co.'s ranking of most popular programs. The shows ranged from a low of 4.5 million to a high of 6.2 million viewers.
All of CBS's 10 p.m. dramas last week had more than twice as many viewers as Leno. ABC's "Eastwick" was the only major network show beaten by Leno (Fox turns 10 p.m. over to local news).
NBC, however, says Leno's show must be viewed over the long haul. While the network says Leno's show is much cheaper to produce than scripted programming, it's unclear whether those savings can compensate for the low ratings. NBC concentrates on the ratings for 18-to-49-year-old viewers, and by that measure Leno is precariously close to the 1.5 rating the network says it has promised to advertisers. Last Monday, the show had a 1.5 rating, and on Friday it was 1.4, Nielsen said.

ABC Gives Full Season
'FlashForward'
ABC has given a full-season pickup to "FlashForward," days after doing the same to the rookie comedies "Modern Family," "The Middle" and "Cougar Town."
The mystery-drama has performed admirably for the network in its competitive Thursday-night time period and has been well-liked by critics. Its premiere was the first regular scripted series since "Friends" to beat CBS' "Survivor" in its time slot.

Healthier Diet
Water Drinkers
People who get much of their daily liquids from plain water rather than other beverages may have healthier diets overall, a study suggests.
Using data from a national health survey of more than 12,000 Americans, researchers found that people who drank more "plain water" tended to eat more fiber, less sugar and fewer calorie-dense foods.
The reverse was true of people who got much of their fluids from other beverages, according to a report of the study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
In general, the more water people drank, the more fiber and the less sugar they consumed. They also had a lower intake of calorie-dense foods -- a general marker of a healthier diet. Calorie density refers to the amount of calories in a food in relation to its weight; fruits and vegetables, for instance, tend to have a low calorie density.

Court Rules Against Grandson
Josef Stalin
A Russian court ruled against Josef Stalin's grandson Tuesday in a libel suit over a newspaper article that said the Soviet dictator sent thousands of people to their deaths.
A judge at a Moscow district court rejected Yevgeny Dzhugashvili's claim that Novaya Gazeta damaged Stalin's honor and dignity in an April article that referred to him as a "bloodthirsty cannibal."
The case essentially put Stalin on trial more than 50 years after his death. A ruling against the newspaper would have been seen as an exoneration one of the 20th century's most notorious autocrats.
The late-evening ruling was a rare victory for Stalin's critics in their fight against efforts to rehabilitate the dictator, who according to the rights group Memorial ordered the deaths of at least 724,000 people during a series of purges that peaked in the late 1930s. But defendants said that having the case even make it to court was evidence of a chilling tendency to question the dark side of Soviet history.

Creep Conned
Joseph Brooks
The Oscar-winning songwriter behind "You Light Up My Life" says his former fiancee did just that to him - but hid the fact that she already was married.
Joseph Brooks filed a fraud suit Tuesday in New York. He's seeking at least $2 million in damages and the return of a $550,000 bank account, a $60,000 engagement ring and other presents he says he gave to Joaly Gomez.
The lawsuit says the 71-year-old Brooks met the then-21-year-old Gomez more than 18 months ago and proposed in May. The suit says he was stunned this month to find a 2007 marriage certificate listing her as already married.
Separately, Brooks pleaded not guilty in June to raping 11 women seeking movie roles.

Starbucks Suit
Carly Simon
Carly Simon has filed a lawsuit against Starbucks for withdrawing involvement in the company's music label, Hear Music, just five days before the singer's album was due to come out last year.
The lawsuit claims that Hear Music delivered a marketing plan to Simon that confirmed that her album, "This Kind of Love," would be extensively marketed and distributed at Starbucks locations in the United States and in Canada. But Simon says Starbucks decided to withdraw from Hear Music with no prior notice to her.
As a result of Starbucks' withdrawal, all of the executives responsible for promoting Simon's album were fired and Simon became signed to jazz label Concord Music, which "had none of the assets that constituted the reason for Ms. Simon's decision" to sign with Hear Music.
The singer is suing for deceit, tortious interference and unfair business practices.

All-Time Low Approval
$chwarzenegger
California Governor Arnold $chwarzenegger's popularity has slumped to an all-time low after a budget crisis that has left the state near bankruptcy, a new poll showed Tuesday.
The Field Poll showed the former steroid ingesting, Hollywood action hero turned Republican politician's approval rating had dipped below 30 percent for the first time in his six-year reign, plunging to 27 percent from 33 percent in April.
Some 65 percent of those surveyed voiced disapproval with $chwarzenegger's governorship. The latest ratings were in stark contrast to September 2004, when 65 percent approved of $chwarzenegger and only 22 percent disapproved.
The Field poll was based on a sample of 1,005 registered voters in California between September 18 and October 5.

Another Twitter Quitter
Courtney Love
Alas, the reigning champ of Twitter vitriol has decided to hang up her boxing gloves.
Courtney Love has closed down her Twitter account just days after her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, went after Ali Lohan -- Lindsay's sister -- on the micro-blogging service. Mother and daughter are both tweet-obsolete for the moment.
The development occurs as Miley Cyrus raps a good-bye ode to Twitter on YouTube and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, tries to guilt her into staying on Twitter.
Despite its popularity for public figures looking to control the conversation with their fans, Twitter hasn't been all fun and games. Love is dealing with a defamation claim after tweeting disgust at a fashion designer, and Demi Moore and Perez Hilton were also exploring legal action after their war of 140 characters or less with each other last month.

Reduces Minimum Wage
Colorado
Colorado will become the first state to reduce its minimum wage because of a falling cost of living.
The state Department of Labor and Employment ordered the wage down to $7.24 from $7.28. That's lower than the federal minimum wage of $7.25, so most minimum wage workers would lose only 3 cents an hour.
Colorado is one of 10 states where the minimum wage is tied to inflation. The indexing is thought to protect low-wage workers from having flat wages as the cost of living goes up.
But because Colorado's provision allows wage declines, the minimum wage will drop because of a falling consumer price index. It will be the first decrease in any state since the federal minimum wage law was passed in 1938.
