Bought By Penske Media
Variety
Penske Media Corp., the owner of the snarky entertainment website Deadline, has purchased venerable show business publication Variety for $25 million.
Variety has covered Hollywood since 1905 and is still considered a prominent entertainment news source. But publication has struggled to compete with websites such as Deadline and The Wrap while continuing its longtime rivalry with The Hollywood Reporter, which was revamped in 2010 under new ownership.
Faced with the onslaught of Web-based news outlets, Variety put its online content behind a "pay wall" in early 2010, ending an experiment with free online content that it began in late 2006. It has about 17,000 subscribers, according to Reed spokesman Paul Abrahams.
Penske Media was founded in 2004 by its CEO, Jay Penske, the son of auto racing team owner Roger Penske. Debt and equity financing for the transaction was provided by Third Point LLC, a hedge fund run by Daniel Loeb. Loeb gained notoriety earlier this year as an activist investor who lobbied for a management change at Yahoo Inc.

Visits Julian Assange At Ecuadorean Embassy
Lady Gaga
Ecuador's Embassy in London says WikiLeaks boss and would-be refugee Julian Assange has had a celebrity visitor: Lady Gaga.
On Monday the 26-year-old American superstar singer posted a photograph of herself standing next to the 41-year-old Australian to her littlemonsters.com website with the caption: "No headline."
The embassy confirmed Lady Gaga's visit Tuesday but gave few other details. An embassy visit would've been convenient: The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was just down the street at Harrods department store to promote her new perfume, "Lady Gaga Fame."
On Tuesday Germanotta was in Iceland, where she received a Lenon Ono Grant for Peace in Reykjavik.

Delays 4th Season Until 2014
Louis C.K.
FX network says it's delaying the return of its hit comedy "Louie" until spring 2014.
The network said Tuesday it had granted the request by the series' Emmy-winning star, Louis C.K., for what he called "a little breathing room." Along with performing in the show, he serves as producer, writer and editor, and also created it.
"Louie" recently concluded its third season. Until the extended hiatus was announced, its return for a fourth season was expected next summer.
During a teleconference, Louis C.K. said he gets "irritated" when he's not working but that he sought a break from the show "to feel hungry" again.

Cancels New Orleans Performance
Green Day
The Grammy-winning rock band Green Day has canceled its upcoming performance in New Orleans.
The band was scheduled to headline the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience at City Park on Oct. 27. But a spokesman for the group said Tuesday the performance has been canceled.
The announcement comes less than a month after the band's front man Billie Joe Armstrong headed into treatment for substance abuse.
Voodoo is scheduled for Oct. 26-28 and includes such acts as Neil Young, the Avett Brothers, Skrillex, Nas and Jack White.

Four Decades At BBC
Jimmy Savile
Jimmy Savile, the late BBC TV star at the centre of a child sex scandal that has shaken Britain's state-funded broadcaster, may have abused up to 25 victims some as young as 13 over four decades, police said on Tuesday.
Detectives said they were looking into 120 lines of inquiry about Savile, the eccentric children's presenter who was a British household name for both his TV and charity work, since allegations against him were first aired just over a week ago.
A number of the alleged victims have gone public, triggering a media storm that has raised awkward questions for the BBC including suggestions the broadcaster covered up Savile's crimes, some of which were said to have taken place on BBC premises.
Eight women have already made criminal complaints against Savile, two of rape and six of indecent assault. Commander Peter Spindler, who is heading the police inquiry, said he expected more to follow as other victims came forward.
"We think we will come up with between 20 and 25 victims," he told reporters, adding the eight who had already come forward had mostly been aged 13 to 16 at the time of the alleged abuse.

Responds To Mike Love's Letter
Brian Wilson
Brian Wilson says he felt blindsided by a news release from his Beach Boys band mate Mike Love that ended the good vibrations on the band's 50th anniversary tour.
Wilson answered Mike Love's recent explanation in The Los Angeles Times with a response in the newspaper Tuesday. Love says he was simply trying to clear up confusion about post-50th anniversary dates when he issued the news release, but many - including band members Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks - took the release as news of a firing.
"As far as I know I can't be fired - that wouldn't be cool," Wilson wrote in the Times. "The negativity surrounding all the comments bummed me out. What's confusing is that by Mike not wanting or letting Al, David and me tour with the band, it sort of feels like we're being fired."
The dueling newspaper notes are the latest turn in what's been an off-and-on again relationship for decades. Wilson and Love are cousins and founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band that helped crystalize the California sound of the 1960s. Wilson stopped touring regularly in 1964, notes Love, who has led a version of the band on the road for the last 13 years.

Regroups Under Comcast
NBC
NBC slashes Jay Leno's "Tonight" pay in half, but forks out more than $8 billion to renew its broadcast rights to Sunday Night Football.
Rumors swirl about a salary cut for Matt Lauer and Alec Baldwin tweets an offer to cut his salary, even as the network gambles on a $4.4 billion bid for the Olympics.
Is this any way to run a network that's been stuck at No. 4 in the prime-time ratings for eight seasons?
But steps including Leno's pay cut (to a still-enviable $15 million) and "Tonight" staff reductions raised eyebrows and this question: Is NBC returning to the chokehold on costs that was in place under previous CEO Jeff Zucker, when viewership spiraled downward?
Another key NBC franchise, "Today," is finding itself on shaky ratings ground after 15 years at the top. Since the beginning of July, "Today" has lost each week in the ratings to "Good Morning America," with the exception of the two weeks NBC was in London for the Olympics.

Writing Book
Samantha Geimer
The former teen whom Roman Polanski was convicted of having sex with - leading to one of Hollywood's most notorious scandals and the director's flight from the U.S. - is writing a memoir.
Samantha Geimer, now 47, has a deal with Atria Books for "The Girl: Emerging from the Shadow of Roman Polanski." Atria, a Simon & Schuster imprint, announced Tuesday that the book will come out next fall. According to Atria, Geimer will provide "insight into many dimensions of the story that have never previously been revealed."
"I am more than 'Sex Victim Girl,' a tag the media pinned on me," Geimer, who long ago identified herself as Polanski's victim, said in a statement released through Atria. "My friends in junior high, scolded by their parents to stay away from that girl, also labeled me. I offer my story now without rage, but with purpose - to share a tale that in its detail will reclaim my identity. I have been dogged by tired thinking and easy tags nearly my entire life. I am not a stick figure. I know what it is like to be a woman and a victim in the realest possible way."
Geimer sued Polanski in December 1988, alleging sexual assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress and seduction. In 1993, Polanski agreed to pay her $500,000 to settle the lawsuit, although years later it was unclear if he actually paid. She has said that she forgives him and has joined his bid for dismissal.

Lose Majority Status In US
Protestants
For the first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority, according to a new study. One reason: The number of Americans with no religious affiliation is on the rise.
The percentage of Protestant adults in the U.S. has reached a low of 48 percent, the first time that Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life has reported with certainty that the number has fallen below 50 percent. The drop has long been anticipated and comes at a time when no Protestants are on the U.S. Supreme Court and the Republicans have their first presidential ticket with no Protestant nominees.
Among the reasons for the change a spike in the number of American adults who say they have no religion. The Pew study, released Tuesday, found that about 20 percent of Americans say they have no religious affiliation, an increase from 15 percent in the last five years.
Growth among those with no religion has been a major preoccupation of American faith leaders who worry that the United States, a highly religious country, would go the way of Western Europe, where church attendance has plummeted. Pope Benedict XVI, Protector of Pedophiles, has partly dedicated his pontificate to combating secularism in the West. This week in Rome, he is convening a three-week synod, or assembly, of bishops from around the world aimed at bringing back Roman Catholics who have left the church.

NY College Gets Photos
Ansel Adams
A small New York college has been given a rare collection of 75 signed Ansel Adams photographs, selected as a set by the artist himself, the college announced Tuesday.
Among the images is the famous "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico" as well as several well-known scenes of Yosemite National Park and photographs of artist Georgia O'Keeffe and photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
The College of New Rochelle said that the gift, worth $2.5 million, is from Caryl Horwitz, former director of its graduate art department. Her late husband acquired the collection in the 1980s.
The 75 photographs make up what is known as Adams' Museum Set Edition of Fine Prints, a selection he made beginning in the late 1970s. He created several Museum Sets before his death in 1984.

Eric Lomax
Eric Lomax, a former British prisoner of war whose moving tale of wartime torture and forgiveness is being turned into a film, died Monday in Berwick-upon-Tweed in northern England, his publisher, Vintage Books, reported. Lomax was 93.
Lomax was a British army officer when he was captured by Japanese forces as they overran Singapore in 1942. Lomax endured horrific conditions and savage beatings as he and thousands of others were put to work building the infamous Burma to Siam railroad.
Lomax endured years of suppressed rage at the torture he suffered at the hands of his Japanese captors, but when he tracked his interrogator down, it set the stage for a dramatic act of forgiveness that formed the heart of his celebrated 1996 memoir, "The Railway Man."
The book is currently being made into a film starring Academy Award-winners Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.
Lomax was born May 30, 1919, in Edinburgh. He returned there in 1945 after more than three years of interrogation and torture at the hands of the Japanese after his capture in Singapore.
Lomax later wrote of his own skepticism ahead of meeting with Nagase Takashi, who he had tracked down following his retirement in 1982.
"I strongly suspected that if I were to meet him I'd put my hands round his neck and do him in," Lomax wrote on the website of U.K.-based reconciliation charity The Forgiveness Project. "After our meeting, I felt I'd come to some kind of peace and resolution. Forgiveness is possible when someone is ready to accept forgiveness. Some time the hating has to stop."
Lomax is survived by his wife Patti, his daughter from his first marriage, Charmaine, and his step-children, Graeme, Nicholas, Mark and Jennifer.

Turhan Bey
Turhan Bey, an actor whose exotic good looks earned him the nickname of "Turkish Delight" in films with Errol Flynn and Katherine Hepburn before he left Hollywood for a quieter life in Vienna, has died. He was 90.
Marita Ruiter, who exhibited Bey's photos in her Luxembourg gallery, told the Austria Press Agency on Tuesday that Bey died in the Austrian capital on Sept. 30 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease and was cremated on Monday.
While celebrated for supporting roles alongside Flynn, Hepburn, John Wayne, Peter Lorre and other film greats of the 1940s, friends described Bey as a modest, unassuming man who never bragged of his ties with the stars of the era.
Born in Austria as Gilbert Selahettin Schultavey, the son of a Moslem Turkish diplomat, Bey assumed his stage name shortly after moving to the United States with his Jewish Czech mother from Vienna to escape the Nazis and being discovered by talent scouts from Warner Bros. studios.
His popular name was "Turkish Delight" - a reference to his suave good looks that made him an ideal partner to exotics like Maria Montez in escapist Technicolor adventure fantasies set in faraway places.
He starred or had major roles alongside the big stars of the era in films such as "A Night in Paradise," "Out of the Blue," and "The Amazing Mr. X" until the popularity of the genre faded in the 1950s.
Moving back to Vienna, he made living as a photographer and occasional stage director, again returning after a brief film and television comeback in the 1990s that earned him an Emmy nomination for his performance as the venerable Turval in the "Babylon 5" space fantasy TV series.
