M Is FOR MASHUP - October 3rd, 2012 (The Year of the Mashup Album)
13 Halloween Mashups ( + Gigantor vs Godzilla)
By DJ Useo
Halloween can be one of the most fun holidays. It's social, creative, & if you play your cards right you get free goodies! I have free goodies for you right now, so don't be tricking me none! These are first-rate goodies, too. It's my 5th annual 'Halloween ep' album! '
DJ Useo-Halloween ep 2012'
follows the uncanny pattern of the previous four. It has 13 (14 if you count the unlisted bonus track) Halloween mashups of varying musical styles. You get your 'cheesy' mashup, like 'the purple people eater'-type. You get your spookier-type tracks like 'the theme from Friday the 13th'. All mashed into new arrangements.
Don't look for those two on this new collection, though, I found lots of other tracks to mix. I actually made way more than 13! Many of the others that aren't on here will appear shortly on other Halloween mashup collections, and a new podcast. (A teaser) Still, even after I contributed some to others upcoming spooky collections, I had a large batch left to pick these 13 from. After all, I'd been making Halloween mashups on & off since last Halloween. I even made some for a
Halloween/Christmas mashup album
( creepmas.blogspot.com/p/what-is-creepmas.html ) that appeared.
It sure would be nice if people remembered me for a Halloween mashup after I'm gone. I don't mean dead, I mean gone to another Halloween party.
I'll also be updating all my Halloween-related posts at my blog & linking them all in one new post. For years now, I've had people writing me around Halloween asking for new working links for the various tracks, podcasts, radio shows, & long mixes I've done to celebrate the season. This year I plan to take proactive action so the links will already be properly active. I've had a lot of chances to play my Halloween mashups, & everyone elses in the past. I did one hundred episodes of 'The Qradips Show w/ DJ Useo' & I bet there's 4 or 5 of them devoted to nawt but scary mashups. I can recall off the top of my head two podcasts, & three long mixes of Halloween stuff. I enjoy the genre & it's clear tons of you do as well. I know I'm not the only online DJ who does a Halloween project every year. Check the mashup forums like
SoundUnsound
( sound-unsound.com/ ) , or
Mashstix
( mashstix.com ) , you'll see I speak the truth.
This year I gathered together a small batch of Halloween mashups I posted as singles last year. (The old links are long gone. Dead, you might say. Lol) Then I had a large batch of tracks made new just for this project. & lastly, but most unexpectedly, I have a group of tracks that were rejected for other Halloween albums, mainly because they were 'cheesy' Halloween, not 'scary' Halloween. No worries, I thought, as they made this collection of mine stronger, albeit 'cheesier'. ;) I understand their decisions, actually. After all, how many times have we heard 'The Monster Mash' by Bobby "Boris" Pickett mashed? So they didn't want my mix of Mr. Pickett singing over the Beatles ' A Hard Days' Night'. One comp guy even told us all up front, "No monster mash, or thriller, or ghostbusters mashups!" Lol. I hope you try my version of the monster mash out, though, it sounds really amazing & melodic this way withe the Beatles rocking underneath. btw-I included a pdf with working links to the previous four Useo Halloween ep's. That's seventy halloween mashups altogether if my adding is up to snuff ( & counting the unlisted bonus tracks) . Here's a
Preview link for track 13-Run For Your Life Dragula (The Beatles vs Rob Zombie)(Album Version)
( soundcloud.com/dj-useo/13-run-for-your-life-dragula )
Well, this is only the beginning of the Halloween mashup season. There's major collections coming out every week all month! So gird your loins & stock up on sweeties to ward off the costumed soap-welding goblins! Make sure you leave me some feedback on this collection, or I'll be around waxing your windows & T-P'ing your porch! useo8@yahoo.com
Mix Of The Week
There's so many Halloween mixes already! Youtube is stocked to the gills with them. But here's a very nice 23 minute mix from
Lazerbehm. It captures the spirit of the season right well & is great for personal or party playing.

Add lots of scary sound effects to your Halloween mashups. People expect that.
Latest Useo Thing
I've been slowly updating the links at my blog starting with the oldest singles. So for the first time in ages, you can get tracks like '
Simon Says Bagpipe' (Pharoah Monche vs Tate)
'Magic Carpet House' (Chus & Penn Pres. Soulground vs London Residents vs Mighty Dub Cats)

Rian Johnson's "Looper," a smart and tricky sci-fi story, sidesteps the paradoxes of time travel by embracing them. Musical Duet Demo
LOLA
Technology that allows musicians in different places to perform together in real-time was dramatically demonstrated Tuesday in Philadelphia, where a violinist and cellist hundreds of miles apart played a duet as if they were on the same stage.
More than 600 engineers, researchers and scientists jumped to their feet and cheered after the performance at the Internet2 fall member meeting at a downtown hotel.
Violinist Marjorie Bagley, on stage in Philadelphia, and cellist Cheng-Hou Lee, projected on a video screen in DeKalb, Ill., performed the tricky Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for cello and violin to show off LOLA. That's the nickname for the low-latency audio and videoconferencing software developed by researchers from the G. Tartini Music Conservatory in Trieste, Italy, and the Italian Research & Education Network.
LOLA reduces transmission delays, or latency, to roughly 35 milliseconds. To the musicians' ears, that's like being on the same stage. Typical delays on current audiovisual networks can be more than 200 milliseconds - far too long for collaborations that need to be in perfect sync with the most subtle aspects of a musical performance.
Anyone hoping to use LOLA for jam sessions with their buddies across town, take note: This technology only operates on Internet2, a university-backed network providing high-speed bandwidth to research and educational institutions in the United States.

Celebrates 20 Years
Cartoon Network
It's been a long, strange 20 years for the Cartoon Network, which has flourished during a time when animation traced its way from the likes of "Scooby-Doo" to the racy, trippy fare now shown on Adult Swim.
The network is celebrating itself all month with on-air tributes, starting with a video released Monday that features more than 100 characters that have appeared on the channel coming together in a rave-like dance party.
When the network launched on Oct. 1, 1992, it aired around-the-clock cartoons including those from the Hanna-Barbera library - which includes "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons" - at a time when ratings for morning cartoons were dropping and "The Simpsons" was making its mark in prime time.
But Ted Turner believed Cartoon Network could fill a void and cater to both children and adults. Original productions began in 1994 with "Space Ghost Coast to Coast," which led to several other original series that became popular including "The Powerpuff Girls," ''Dexter's Laboratory," ''Courage the Cowardly Dog" and "Johnny Bravo."

Piano On Loan To Louisville Museum
Stevie Wonder
A piano used by Stevie Wonder when he was a student in Michigan has been loaned to the Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville, Ky., and will be on display starting next week.
The 1922 Steinway grand piano was long used by students at the Michigan School for the Blind, where Wonder, a child prodigy, studied in the mid-1960s. Wonder signed with Motown at age 11 and went on to become a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
Museum spokeswoman Roberta Williams told The Courier-Journal the piano will be on loan indefinitely. It goes on display starting Oct. 11.

"The Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium"
Stewart v. O'Really
One is from Fox News, the other Comedy Central. They might as well be the Capulets and the Montagues.
But despite their opposing sides on the political spectrum, something almost like - gasp! - friendship has evolved between Bill O'Reilly and Jon Stewart. The two have frequently appeared on each other's shows, exhibiting actual respect for the other's views.
On Saturday, Stewart and O'Reilly will square off in a mock debate in Washington, D.C., to be streamed online for $4.95, with half the proceeds going to charity. As the two prepare for the clash in their respective corners - the event has been dubbed "The Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium" - Stewart and O'Reilly took a moment to reflect on their unique relationship.
Their 90-minute debate, which will follow Wednesday's showdown between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, will be conducted like a presidential debate (albeit with less strict time restraints) and moderated by CNN's E.D. Hill. The sold-out event at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium will be live-streamed at TheRumble2012.com.

Renewed For Season 4
Boardwalk Empire
At the rate "Boardwalk Empire" is going, it may not have any living characters by the end of this season. But HBO is renewing it anyway.
The show, now in its third season, will be back for a fourth, HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo announced Tuesday. The Prohibition-era drama stars Steve Buscemi as Atlantic City power broker Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who bounces between the underworld and sober society despite his insistence that "you can't be half a gangster." Its executive producers include Martin Scorsese and showrunner Terry Winter.
The second season of the show averaged 8.6 million viewers an episode. The premiere of the current season had 7.2 million and will gain more in additional airings and on-demand.
The show recently won four Emmy Awards, including for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Tim Van Patten), Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series (in a tie with "Game of Thrones"), Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, and Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role.

3 Full-Season Pickups
NBC
NBC has given an early sign of approval to three of its new series, handing each a full-season commitment.
The network announced Tuesday it is picking up for a full-season order the adventure-drama "Revolution" and the comedies "Go On" and "The New Normal."
The network said "Revolution," from producer J.J. Abrams, has averaged a healthy 9.8 million viewers in its first three airings. "Go On," which stars Matthew Perry, is averaging 8.6 million viewers thus far.
"The New Normal," from producer Ryan Murphy, is averaging 6 million viewers.

Getting Facelift
Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood sign is undergoing a show business inevitability - a facelift.
Thirty-five years after it was rebuilt, the sign's letters will be stripped down to sheet metal, primed and given a new coat of white paint.
The 10-week project begins Tuesday. The sign celebrates its 90th anniversary next year.
It went up in the hills in 1923 at a cost of $21,000 to promote a Hollywoodland Real Estate Group development.

Fraud Growing
Scientific Research Papers
Fraud in scientific research, while still rare, is growing at a troubling pace, a new study finds.
A review of retractions in medical and biological peer-reviewed journals finds the percentage of studies withdrawn because of fraud or suspected fraud has jumped substantially since the mid-1970s. In 1976, there were fewer than 10 fraud retractions for every 1 million studies published, compared with 96 retractions per million in 2007.
The study authors aren't quite sure why this is happening. But they and outside experts point to pressure to hit it big in science, both for funding and attention, and to what seems to be a subtle increase in deception in overall society that science may simply be mirroring.
Fraud in life sciences research is still minuscule and committed by only a few dozen scientific scofflaws. However, it causes big problems, said Arturo Casadevall, a professor of microbiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Casadevall is the lead author of the study which looked at the reasons for 2,047 retractions among many millions of studies published in journals and kept in a government database for medically focused research.
Fraud was the No. 1 cause of retractions, accounting for 43 percent of them. When fraud was combined with other areas of misconduct, such as plagiarism, it explained about 2 out of 3 retractions, the study found.

Smithsonian Exhibition
Charley Pride
Growing up the son of sharecroppers in Mississippi, Charley Pride developed a love of country music that propelled him into a legendary career as one of its biggest stars.
Now, items donated by Pride from throughout his life will become part of the Smithsonian's upcoming National Museum of African American History and Culture, set to open in 2015. A gala reception will be held Wednesday in Pride's hometown of Dallas to celebrate the museum gift, which includes a pair of Pride's boots, one of his guitars and his Country Music Association male vocalist of the year award from 1971.
Pride said that while it was difficult to part with some of the items, it's nice to know that they will be in the museum where he can always go visit.
Pride, who at 78 is still touring and heads to Ireland this month and the United Kingdom next month, said he never had trouble from audiences over his race. "I never had one iota of hoot calls from the audience," Pride said.

Art Show
"Deadhouse"
Above ground Somerset House boasts one of London's most famous courtyards, a neo-classical gem used for film sets, fashion shows and a glamorous skating venue in the winter.
Beneath the spectacular square are little-known underground passageways called the "Deadhouse", which this week open to the public for the first exhibition of paintings ever to be held there.
Somerset House's resident artist Paul Benney is exhibiting his paintings in a free show running from October 4 to December 9, and in the dingy subterranean chambers they hang alongside the headstones of French courtiers buried there in the 17th century.
The headstones date back to 1637, when Henrietta Maria of France, who married Charles I, used what was then called Denmark House and had a Roman Catholic chapel built - a deeply unpopular move at the time.
Henrietta fled to France during the English Civil War in which her husband Charles I was executed, but returned to Denmark House as Dowager Queen after the restoration of Charles II in 1660, and launched a new phase of expansion.

Michael Henry Heim
Michael Henry Heim, an internationally known translator who created highly praised English versions of such masterpieces as "Death in Venice" and "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," has died. He was 69.
Heim who taught Slavic languages and literature at the University of California, Los Angeles for 40 years, died Saturday at his West Los Angeles home from complications of melanoma, the school said in an obituary.
Heim won numerous awards for his work translating Eastern European, Russian and German authors. He spoke or read a dozen languages.
"He put himself to sleep at night by learning vocabulary words in whatever language he was studying," said his wife, Priscilla Heim.
Heim translated Czech novelist Milan Kundera's bestselling "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting."
His German translations included Günter Grass's "My Century" and "Peeling the Onion," the first volume of Grass's two-volume memoir.
His translation of Thomas Mann's classic "Death in Venice" from German won the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Prize in 2005.
He also translated works by Anton Chekhov and Bertold Brecht. His 1975 translation of Chekhov's letters was praised in the New York Review of Books.
Although he was praised for his translations, Heim said he disagreed with the view that translators effectively were creating new works and didn't consider himself a novelist.
"As long as there are people I can translate who are better fiction writers than I am, I'll translate them," he told UCLA Today in 2006.
In addition to his wife, Heim is survived by three stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
