Written for the film Sun Valley Serenade (1941), this song was originally recorded by Glenn Miller. Even though Celine Dion and Beyoncé had chart successes with this hit, it's considered Etta James's signature song. What is the title of this timely song?
Crater Lake (Klamath: giiwas) is a crater lake in south-central Oregon in the western United States. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot (655 m)-deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 (± 150) years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama. There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. With a depth of 1,949 feet (594 m), the lake is the deepest in the United States. In the world, it ranks ninth for maximum depth, and third for mean (average) depth.
Crater Lake features two small islands. Wizard Island, located near the western shore of the lake, is a cinder cone approximately 316 acres (128 ha) in size. Phantom Ship, a natural rock pillar, is located near the southern shore.

I think it's either Lake Tahoe or Crater Lake. I'll go with Crater Lake, just because. We were there for our son's 10th birthday, June 20, 1996. There was so much snow that our campground was still closed (we rented a cabin and it was fine). Our son was disappointed that he wasn't having a party, but we made snowmen and snow angels while wearing shorts and t-shirts; it was actually a lot of fun and also a beautiful place to visit.

CONAN Highlight: Rachel Maddow couldn't contain herself while reporting on the formal impeachment inquiry against Trump.
Monologue:
Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump over his inappropriate conduct with Ukraine. Trump was furious and said, "This is nuts, I've done way worse things."
TAG: This? I've killed people!
This all started when a whistleblower lodged a complaint over Trump's phone call with the leader of Ukraine. We don't know who the whistleblower is yet, but we do know they'll end up on "Dancing with the Stars."
Earlier this morning at the United Nations, President Trump railed against illegal immigration. There was an awkward moment when Trump said to the UN delegates, "Look around, how did you people even get in here?"
President Trump's adult children, including Tiffany, watched their dad's speech at the UN today. Afterwards, Ivanka, Don Jr and Eric said, "Hey Dad, great speech," and Tiffany said, "Hey Dad, I'm Tiffany."
• Sassy, a magazine for North American teenagers, once mentioned the deodorant Teen Spirit, which it liked, but about which the Sassywriter also wrote the phrase "gag on the name." Supposedly, Kathleen Hanna, lead singer for the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, read Sassyand then spray-painted "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on a wall at Kurt Cobain's dwelling. Of course, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became the lead song off Nevermind, an album by Kurt's band, Nirvana. Also, of course, Kurt also married Courtney Love, and they were very much in love. Courtney once apologized to Kurt because she had a zit, and Kurt replied, "Zits are beauty marks."
• Larry Parnes was an early British rock-star manager. He often discovered talent and gave the performers new, more exciting names. Often, the first name was homey, and the second name was dynamic: Vince Eager, Georgie Fame, Johnny Goode, Dickie Pride, and Marty Wilde. Of course, some names were better than others. Vince Eager complained about another name that Mr. Parnes had thought up after giving Mr. Eager his name: "Why couldn't Larry have christened meBilly Fury?"
• Rap stars can be interesting people. Two examples: 1) When he was growing up, Jay "Jam Master Jay" Mizell wore shoelaces in his sneakers that matched the color of his clothing. Why did he stop wearing laces in his sneakers? He explains, "It took too long to put them in." 2) Rap star L.L. Cool J can't be accused of being humble. His initials "L.L." stand for "Ladies Love," so his full stage name is "Ladies Love Cool J."

• Musician Mirah Zeitlyn spent time in the early '90s in Olympia, Washington. While she was at Evergreen State College, she organized her record collection according to gender. Why? She explains, "Sometimes I want to listen to this stuff that men make, and sometimes I want to listen to this stuff that women make." Olympia is one of the places where riot grrrl music - which was influenced by punk music and feminism - started. In 1981, Sharon Cheslow was a founding member of Chalk Circle, the first all-female punk group in Washington, D.C. At a concert featuring the Mo-dettes, an all-female punk band from London, she had asked singer Romana Carlier for advice. Ms. Cheslow says, "I'll never forget the music she gave me. She said, 'You can't deny the fact that you're a woman, but the most important thing is to focus on creating music.'" Creating music is the most important thing, but another important thing is being free to create the music. Ms. Cheslow says, "I wasn't interested in joining some other culture. I wanted to create my own culture. That's what punk had taught me, that I should be free to create as a girl." By the way, some of the riot grrrls were adored. One fan wrote in a riot grrrl zine titled MTM, "I am considering calling the man/boy/guy/male who gave it to me a god." The "it" was a lock of the hair of Kathleen Hanna, who became one of the musicians who founded Bikini Kill in Olympia in 1990.
• Ken Nordine is most famous for a series of Word Jazz albums. As a creative person, he leads a life of wit and originality. When he was a boy, he was bothered because his minister would not get wet during baptisms because he wore thigh-high boots. Therefore, young Ken secretly made a hole in one of the boots. He remembers that at the next baptism he "could seethe Christian anger arise in [the minister's] reddening face. He walked out with a big boot full of water, and when he got to his study, he released a small flood!" Sometimes, the people around Ken are the original ones. For example, a man once stripped to his shorts and then painted himself white in Ken's garden. Ken called 911 and told the police about the man. The police arrived, thinking that Ken might be kidding them, but they found the man's pants and a bucket and paintbrush that the man had used to paint himself white. They then took off after the man, first radioing the police station to say, "The guy who painted himself white is heading north, and we've got his pants." Ken says, "If I were to think of something like that, people would say, 'Man, you are really sick.'" By the way, Ken's wife is also original. She once held a party, and it took Ken two hours to realize what was unusual about the party: Every man whom she had invited was named John. (She also thought about having a "Mary" party.)

Tom Hanks, decorated actor, Mr. Rogers lookalike and America's dad, is set to be honored at next year's Golden Globe Awards.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday morning that Hanks, 63, will be the next recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an annual honor given to a "talented individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry." The award show is set to air live Jan. 5, 2020.
Past recipients of the award include Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Denzel Washington, Martin Scorsese and Audrey Hepburn.
Hanks, a 2-time Oscar winner, 7-time Emmy winner and 4-time Golden Globe winner, is known and celebrated for a myriad of comedic and dramatic roles since the 1980s, including "Big," "Sleepless in Seattle," "Cast Away," "A League of Their Own," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Toy Story." He is also a 2009 American Film Institute lifetime achievement award recipient, 2014 Kennedy Center Honoree and 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.
Vox Media has acquired New York Media, the parent company of New York Magazine, it was announced Tuesday. In addition to the 50-year-old biweekly magazine, Vox also adds fashion site The Cut, food site Grub Street, politics site Intelligencer, shopping site The Strategist, and pop culture site Vulture.
The acquisition is an all-stock deal. The value of the deal, which is expected to close this fall, was not disclosed.
The most obvious overlaps between the two companies is their two food sites: Eater and Grub Street, and between news publications New York Magazine and Vox.
Prior to the acquisition, Vox's network also included real estate site Curbed, gaming site Polygon, technology business Recode, sports site SB Nation, tech site The Verge, and the flagship site Vox.
Showtime has acquired the rights to the weekly "Vice" docuseries and ordered a new 13-episode season, the network announced Tuesday. It will premiere in the spring of 2020.
"As so much of television news has moved in a direction of partisan coverage and talking heads, the team behind Vice continues to delve deep into the global issues, conflicts and newsmakers affecting our everyday lives," said Vinnie Malhotra, Executive Vice President of Showtime's nonfiction programming. "They also do it with an incredibly diverse cadre of journalists - both in front of and behind the camera. Their dogged pursuit of award-winning journalism, is matched by stellar filmmaking and craft in this weekly documentary series. We're honored and excited to partner with them moving forward."
HBO did not renew the weekly "Vice" after its sixth season in 2018, then cancelled the daily "Vice News Tonight" earlier this year. "Vice News Tonight" found a new home at Viceland.
In the release announcing the pickup of the weekly docuseries, Showtime pointed out it was already nominated for 12 Primetime Emmys during the six-season HBO run and got two wins including Outstanding Informational Series or Special.
A rare painting from the Italian master Cimabue was found hanging in the kitchen of a woman outside Paris, local media reported.
"Christ Mocked," a work by the 13th century pre-Renaissance painter, was part of a larger display and could be valued between $4.4 to 6.6 million, art expert Éric Turquin told French newspaper Le Figaro.
The painting was found in the town of Compiègne after an auctioneer saw the work, which the woman had hung directly above a hotplate, and told her to have it appraised, said Stephane Pinta, a painting specialist with the Turquin gallery in Paris. The woman had thought the work was just an old religious work, the French news agency AFP reported.
The painting, about 8 inches by 11 inches, was part of a diptych that was broken up and included eight scenes from the Passsion of the Christ, Le Figaro reported. Two other sections, painted around 1280, are displayed at the Frick Collection in New York and the National Gallery in London.
The Florentine painter, also known as Cenni di Pepo, was hugely influential just before the Italian Renaissance began, and art journal The Art Newspaper described him as "the father of Western painting."
The federal government is still investigating the brutal slaying of black teenager Emmett Till, whose death in 1955 helped spur the civil rights movement. A Justice Department report issued to Congress about civil rights cold case investigations lists Till's killing as being among the unit's active cases.
The inquiry was reopened two years after a book indicated a key witness had lied. "The Blood of Emmett Till," by Timothy B. Tyson, quotes a white woman, Carolyn Donham, as acknowledging during a 2008 interview that she wasn't truthful when she testified that Till grabbed her, whistled and made sexual advances at a store in 1955.
Two white men - Donham's then-husband Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam - were charged with murder but acquitted in the slaying of Till, who had been staying with relatives in northern Mississippi at the time. The men later confessed to the crime in a magazine interview, but weren't retried. Both are now dead.
Relatives of Till say they're encouraged that the case remains open but they're eager for a resolution, according to a Justice Department report.
The department has closed its review of six other slayings dating from 1940 through 1973 without filing any charges.
If you want your past to be forgotten on the internet, it might be best to move to Europe.
Google will not have to apply Europe's "right to be forgotten" law globally, the continent's top court ruled on Tuesday in a landmark case that has pitted personal privacy rights against freedom of speech.
The victory for the U.S. tech titan means that, while it must remove links to sensitive personal data from its internet search results in Europe when required, it does not have to scrap them from searches elsewhere in the world.
The case has been viewed as a landmark test, in an age of an internet that knows no borders, of whether people can demand a blanket removal of information about themselves from searches without stifling free speech and legitimate public interest.
It has also been seen by policymakers and companies around the world as a test of whether the European Union can extend its laws beyond its own territory. The ruling, which applies to all search engines, is rare positive news for big tech companies under intense official scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic over their dominant positions and gathering of vast amounts of data.
A threat by Don-Old Trump (R-Crooked) to pull the United States out of the global postal system could lead to a "nightmare scenario" of mail going undelivered, packages piling up and American stamps no longer being recognized abroad, the U.N. postal agency said.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has been holding an emergency meeting in Geneva to persuade Washington not to follow through on a threat to quit the agency, which sets rules to ensure mail gets delivered around the globe.
The Trump administration says it wants to charge other countries more than UPU rules now permit to have letters and packages delivered in the United States. It has set a deadline of next month for rates to be raised or it will quit.
"It is really a nightmare scenario," the UPU's secretary-general, Bishar Hussein, told a news conference, noting that no country had ever left since the agency was founded nearly 150 years ago. It now has 192 members.
Were the United States to quit the UPU, U.S. stamps would no longer be valid abroad, he said. He said he was "very optimistic" that a compromise could be reached.
Humans have long known that it's inadvisable to mess with Mother Nature. And, as a group of researchers from the Russian Geographical Society just learned, it's also apparently inadvisable to mess with a mother walrus.
The scientists were aboard a Russian Navy tugboat known as the Altai on an expedition to the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean this week right before the unusual human-animal interaction occurred. They boarded a small rubber landing craft and were en route to the shore to study its flora and fauna when a female walrus attacked, sinking the vessel.
"During the landing at Cape Heller, a group of researchers had to flee from a female walrus, which, protecting its cubs, attacked an expedition boat," the Russian Military's Northern Fleet said in a press release.
The Russian military appeared to be flying a drone above a group of walruses on a nearby beach to take scientific photographs, which may have spooked the animal, igniting its maternal defense instincts. A gallery posted by the Northern Fleet following the incident shows images of walruses gathered on the Franz Josef Land.
And, while the attached report makes no mention of a navy boat sinking, it does note that "serious troubles were avoided thanks to the clear and well-coordinated actions of the Northern Fleet servicemen, who were able to take the boat away from the animals without harming them."
