War Stories Honored
News Emmys
The war in Iraq may seem like it's mostly out of the headlines these days, but it was on the minds of the voters Monday night at the News and Documentary Emmys.
Stories that were honored centered on wounded veterans and their plight back home, a Marine veteran who videotaped the war in Iraq, family members from an infantry unit of the Iowa National Guard and the battle to get body armor on more troops. A "Bill Moyers Journal" installment about how the Iraq war was marketed and the annual "Iraq: Where Things Stand" on ABC News also won awards.
PBS won 10 awards, including best documentary for the Independent Lens production "Billy Strahorn: Lush Life." CBS took home five, including three for "60 Minutes" and two for "Sunday Morning." ABC News won four, including two for "20/20" and two for "World News With Charles Gibson." National Geographic won three, and Freep.com, Free Press, History Channel and NBC News' "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" each won two. One award each went to CFR.org , Discovery Channel, HBO/Cinemax, HDNet/Dan Rather Reports, MercuryNews.com and Smithsonian Channel.
Receiving lifetime achievement awards were CBS News veteran Bob Schieffer and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, as well as the late Tim Russert.

Donates Money
The Spielbergs
Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, are the latest celebrity donors to the fight against California's November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.
Spielberg and Capshaw have donated $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, they announced in a statement Monday.
"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation," the statement said. "Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."
Brad Pitt gave the same amount to the cause last week.

'Slacker Uprising'
Michael Moore
Filmmaker Michael Moore released his latest documentary for free on the Internet on Tuesday, marking a first for the maverick director who aims to encourage young people to vote -- preferably for Democrats -- in November's U.S. presidential election.
"Slacker Uprising," a feature-length film documenting Moore's tour of swing states during the 2004 presidential election year, was made available for a free download instead of being released in movie theaters.
The maker of the award-winning anti-Iraq war blockbuster "Fahrenheit 9/11," said in a statement the gesture was "entirely as a gift to my fans."
Although "Slacker Uprising" chronicles the director's efforts to get young people on either side of the political spectrum to vote, he said the documentary was also a "tribute to the young voters who are going to save this country from four more years of Republican rule."

Shocking!
Clay Aiken
Clay Aiken is finally confirming what many people already knew: He's gay.
The cover of the latest People magazine shows Aiken holding his infant son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline: "Yes, I'm Gay." The cover also has the quote: "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things."
Aiken, who gained fame as the runner-up on "American Idol" in 2003, rarely addressed the frequent rumors about his sexuality. In an interview with The Associated Press two years ago, he said: "I don't really feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and the people I love."

Loses Custody Of Son
Sharon Stone
Actress Sharon Stone has lost another round of custody proceedings over her oldest son.
A San Francisco judge denied her request for primary custody of 8-year-old Roan, who's been living with his father, newspaper executive Phil Bronstein. The couple divorced in 2004 after six years of marriage.
The judge ruled Sept. 12 that Bronstein's home is more stable and structured, reaffirming a 2007 court order that the executive vice president of the San Francisco Chronicle has permanent sole custody of Roan.
Stone retains visitation rights.

Part Of CBS Lawsuit To Proceed
Dan Rather
A New York City judge says news anchor Dan Rather can proceed with his $70 million lawsuit accusing CBS of violating its contract with him when the network fired him.
Judicial Hearing Officer Ira Gammerman dismissed a fraud complaint against CBS Corp. on Monday and a business interference complaint against CBS and former parent company Viacom Inc. No causes of action remain in the lawsuit against Viacom.
The judge also let Rather's breach of fiduciary duty complaint against CBS continue.

Judge Rules In Favor
Ed McMahon
Ed McMahon's lawsuit against a hospital and doctors he claims failed to properly diagnose and repair his broken neck has passed a key legal hurdle.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled last week that McMahon's lawsuit against Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and two physicians lays out adequate legal ground to pursue claims that include negligence, elder abuse, battery, fraud and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
According to his lawsuit, doctors at Cedars-Sinai failed to perform an X-ray and determine that he had a broken neck when he was brought into the emergency room. The suit also claims that a doctor at the hospital's spinal-care center improperly performed two surgeries.
McMahon is seeking a jury trial; a date has not yet been set.

When Lobbyists Write The Rules
EPA
The Environmental Protection Agency has decided there's no need to rid drinking water of a toxic rocket fuel ingredient that has fouled public water supplies around the country.
The ingredient, perchlorate, has been found in at least 395 sites in 35 states at levels high enough to interfere with thyroid function and pose developmental health risks, particularly for babies and fetuses, according to some scientists.
The EPA document says that mandating a clean-up level for perchlorate would not result in a "meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction for persons served by public-water systems."
The conclusion, which caps years of dispute over the issue, was denounced by Democrats and environmentalists who accused EPA of caving to pressure from the Pentagon.

Age Is Not An Issue
The Zimmers
If anyone thought the Rolling Stones were beginning to get on in years, another British band are proving age is not an issue when it comes to rock 'n' roll.
The Zimmers, whose lead singer is 91, has just celebrated the launch of its 14-song debut album "Lust for Life" in a Berlin shopping center, a rock show that made the front page of many German newspapers at the weekend.
Their new CD features cover versions of songs by Eric Clapton, The Beatles and Frank Sinatra. Also included is their now famous rendition of The Who's "My Generation," which The Zimmers recorded in 2007 when their average age was 78.
Their manager, Dave Palmer, said his group, whose average age is over 80, chose Germany for the launch of its new album because the audience in Germany often show more respect for the elderly than at home in Britain.
