GET YOUR RED HOT MASHUP COMPS!
By DJ Useo
Sure 'n we all like mashups, but there's generally the one drawback. You have to go pursue them & right-click & save them one at a time. Not entirely a bad deal, but the gold mine of mashups is the mashup compilation. Despite a few naysayers saying 'nay,' the collections do continue & the selection gets better & better! Many of you read of the new comp (theinstituteofbootleggers.blogspot.com/ ) or perhaps you chose to expose yourself to the Austrian Legend DJ Morgoth's new record DJ Morgoth - Mash-Up Your Bootz Vol. 4 (www.djmorgoth.de/index.php?id=27 ) Believe you me, there's going to be a new bootleg album out just about every week. As proof of the inherent truth of that statement, here's a review of 3 new collections that will float your boat!
We begin with DJ Mashup & his new release of his best tracks called DJ MASHUP SUMMER SMASH '09 COMPILATION (djmashupxdv.blogspot.com/2009/05/summer-smash-09-compilation.html ) The assortment is a great collection of DJ Mashup's finest tracks along with 3 unreleased exclusives to add spice. At first, I thought this was the same DJ Mashup I knew from www.multiply.com, but it seems this is another fellow entirely. Well, I wish them both well & in the meantime will continue to savor the splendid releases from this new mixer. He comes across as quite a prolific & talented bootlegger with a large selection of tracks beyond the comp. He mixes tracks like 'Beautiful Journey' (Akon feat. Colby O'Donis vs Journey), 'WonderHalo' (Oasis vs Beyonce) and 'Smack Cinderella Up Under My Umbrella' (Rihanna feat. Chris Brown vs Prodigy), all tracks found on the collection. There's plenty more besides at his blog, & I see he has added KyteTV - A Dj MashUP Channel to his site so you can enjoy his vids as well. Good 1.
Next up is MAXXHITS BOOTLEGS Presents FOOLKLEGS II AROUND THE WORLD (www.maxxhitsbootlegs.com/spip.php?article145 ). It's a splendid comp with mashups crafted from various world music styles. You'll hear tunes from Poland, Russia, South-America, Africa & even the Middle East, all mixed with modern artists like Daft Punk, Thievery Corporation, Lily Allen & Ludacris, among many others. The contributors lineup is a stunner with DJ Zebra, Grandpamini, DJ Y alias JY, Overdub, DJ Le Clown, Funky Belek, ToToM, Fissunix, Elocnep, The Bootleague, Sebwax and Michmash. The first FOOLKLEGS comp was mighty popular, so you can see why another has emerged. It ain't often that you hear a track like Fissunix's 'Womanizer In Madrid' (Espagne / Armik vs. Britney Spears) or Grandpamini's 'Russians Like To Move It Too' (Ukraine / VV vs. Reel 2 Real). If you have ever felt that mashups were too mainstream-sounding, this collection is for you.
One more collection you will want to hear is RIAA's SOUNDS FOR THE SWING-SET (www.m-1.us/soundsfortheswingset.html ) If you are familiar with RIAA, then you will know the joy & wonderment of his collections & tracks. I firmly believe RIAA is the most creative bootlegger posting. When you hear tracks from this comp like 'Bring The Strippers' (Public Enemy vs Sandy Nelson), 'Music For Creeps To Watch Girls By' (Radiohead vs The Bob Crewe Generation vs Afrika Bambattaa), & 'Hookers For Liberace' (NPR Radio vs Liberace vs George Liberace vs Da Lata) you'll instantly realize these aren't your parents' mashups! From the great pun of the title to the fascinating workings of his inventive musical arrangements, RIAA has dropped another tunebucket that will have you after his past releases.
I see more mashup collections are being readied, so please to be enjoying these before more come down the pike. (I told you so! This one just got posted (www.maxxhitsbootlegs.com/spip.php?article168 ) a minute ago! Looks good, too!)
Mix Of The Week - I normally play alt mashups when I do a radio show, but I got the chance to play 2 hours of great unreleased house music mixing with my DJ Useo White Label Dance Special (groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2009/05/dj-useo-white-label-dance-special.html ) It's from just last week on Sound-Unsound WADIO (www.sound-unsound.com ) & contains 2 unrelenting hours of white label mixes done up the best I can. I droppin some classic surf tunes every so often & I've already heard other dj's doing that now. Get yours before the fad passes. lol

I got a very nice e-mail from B.A. in Anchorage yesterday. Actually, it wasn't very nice. She (I think it's a she, but I don't know for sure) thinks I'm completely clueless and worse. But that's OK. She doesn't think I should be killed or strung up because I disagree with her. Reading the e-mail wasn't so scary that I had to forward it to the campus police and wonder why I bother. As far as I could tell, B.A. was actually trying to have a civil conversation with me about why she thought I was wrong.

Chess Legends Face Off Again
Kasparov & Karpov
Chess legends Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov reignite one of the greatest rivalries in the history of chess this week with a re-match of their classic 1984 world championship contest.
The two Russian grand masters, who are widely considered the greatest chess players ever, will play the first of a 12-game re-match in Valencia, Spain, starting on Tuesday, 25 years after the pair first competed for the world title.
The event will be broadcast live on Valencia's regional government website (www.gva.es) with organizers expecting up to 10 million chess fans to follow the matches.
The epic 1984 duel ended in controversy and without a clear winner when the World Chess Federation unexpectedly called off the match after five months of play, citing health concerns for the players who were both representing the Soviet Union.

Banksy & Radiohead
Two of Britain's most recognisable icons have joined together in a unique collaboration.
Media artist and experimental filmmaker Raymond Salvatore Harmon has used a montage of Banksy images for Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke's new music video.
The Hollow Earth shows blindingly fast Banksy images superimposed with time-lapse shots of London.
The video is now available on the Radiohead website and the single will be available for download on October 6.

2.25 Million Albums In 5 Days
Beatles
Nearly 40 years after breaking up, The Beatles are still breaking records for album sales.
EMI Group PLC says consumers in North America, Japan and the U.K. bought more than 2.25 million copies of the Fab Four's re-mastered albums in the first five days after their Sept. 9 release.
Most of the records were broken for most simultaneous titles in the top-selling charts by a single artist.
On Billboard magazine's pop catalog chart, for example, the band had 16 titles in the top 50, including all 14 re-mastered CDs and two box sets.

Afghan Idol Host Flees
Daoud Sediqi
Back in Afghanistan, Daoud Sediqi recalls, he could rarely walk the streets without fans cheering him on, grateful he brought some hope back to the country with his blockbuster "Afghan Idol" show.
But the 29-year-old's own sense of hope is now slipping away. He has left behind stardom -- both his own and of the reality show's contestants -- for a new life in the United States, which granted him asylum due to Taliban threats.
In his stylish checkered shirt and blue jeans, Sediqi has started a new job as a radio announcer for Voice of America, the US-funded broadcaster. On a call-in show during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Sediqi eschewed music and took questions from Afghanistan on spiritual matters.
Sediqi went overseas for the first time in January for the Sundance Film Festival, which screened a British documentary on "Afghan Idol" and its soaring popularity in a nation where entertainment was forbidden under Taliban rule.
As he prepared to fly back, Sediqi was overcome with second thoughts. He still wrestles with his decision to stay, which triggered furious criticism by some Afghans who accused him of turning his back on the country.

Heirs Seek Rights To Marvel Characters
Jack Kirby
Some of the most cherished names in comic book history, from Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, have found themselves locked in a new battle over who owns their copyright.
The superheroes have been invoked by the heirs of the comic-strip artist Jack Kirby, who died in 1994 after being involved in the creation of dozens of popular characters. Kirby's four children have lodged 45 notices of termination of copyright by which they would acquire their father's share when it comes up.
Under America's complicated copyright laws, the rights for the Fantastic Four, for example, would come up in 2017, the Hulk in 2018 and X-Men in 2019.
The lawsuit has been brought on behalf of the Kirby children by Toberoff & Associates, a company based in Los Angeles that has a track record in this field. Recently, it successfully acted for Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman, against Warner Bros.

Another 'Do As I Say, Not As I Do' Republican
Linda McMahon
Linda McMahon's wrestling empire urged young adults to vote in 2008, but the former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO didn't always follow suit.
McMahon, who has stepped down from her job to seek the Republican nomination in Connecticut for the U.S. Senate, acknowledges on her campaign blog that she didn't vote in the 2008 presidential primary after Sen. John McCain became the presumptive GOP nominee.
In a Sept. 16 blog entry titled "One of My Regrets," McMahon said she also missed a general election in 2006 and several local elections.
State records show McMahon voting twice in Connecticut, in the 2002 and 2008 general elections.

Gulf of Mexico
Giant Squid
U.S. scientists in the Gulf of Mexico unexpectedly netted a 19.5-foot (5.9-meter) giant squid off the coast of Louisiana, the Interior Department said on Monday, showing how little is known about life in the deep waters of the Gulf.
Not since 1954, when a giant squid was found floating dead off the Mississippi Delta, has the rare species been spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.
The squid, weighing in at 103 pounds (46.7 kg), was caught July 30 in a trawl net more than 1,500 feet underwater as it was pulled by a research vessel.
The giant squid, which did not survive the rapid change in water depth when brought to the surface, was preserved and sent to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History for further study.

Canada's Polaris Prize
'Fucked Up'
A punk-rock band with an unprintable name and a 300-pound frontman who's known to strip down to his underwear during performances has won the C$20,000 ($19,000) Polaris Music Prize for the best Canadian album.
Hardcore sextet F---ed Up took home the award, Canada's equivalent of Britain's Mercury Prize, after a jury of music journalists picked their 2008 album "The Chemistry of Common Life" at a gala on Monday night.
The win was announced minutes after the group had closed the show with a typically ferocious performance that saw lead singer Damian Abraham smash a glass on his forehead and remove most of his clothes. It surprised many industry observers, who pegged one of the more mainstream nominees, such as fan favorites Metric or rising rapper K'naan, to take the prize.
The band, which has been recording since 2001, was temporarily banned from MTV after destroying a bathroom and causing a near-riot during a taping last year.
The group will use the C$20,000 prize money to fund a benefit album to raise awareness about the plight of hundreds of missing aboriginal women in Canada, Abraham said at a press conference following the gala.
