M Is FOR MASHUP - September 19th, 2012
Mashups For De-Evolution Purposes Only
By DJ Useo
...& now comes the moment I told you would arrive. The moment when I reveal what my new monthly mashup album is. It's '
ARE WE NOT MASHED?' (A Mashup Tribute To Devo)
( www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/09/are-we-not-mashed-devo-tribute.html ) . For most of you, Devo are not an unknown commodity, with over 28 albums released, although for a few of you, Devo are that new band that does
the song about Mitt Romneys' dog
( www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXunulTYpU ) . I'm a huge Devo fan, so for me they're the group that were just here in Austin with Blondie.
Certainly, there's a lot of music available nowadays, but when I'm feeling low, no ones tunes pick me up faster than Devos. For a big Devo fan like me, there's never enough new Devo tunes, so it's no wonder I regularly dip into their catalog & work up something on my own that's 'new'. When I was asked to do a track for Envision's annual '
Smash The Genre' compilation
( www.envisiondesign.com.au/ ) awhile back, nothing struck me as being such strong opposites as Devo's 'Whip It' & Creedance Clearwater Revival's 'Bad Moon Rising'. When I was called upon to do a track for '
2012 SUMMER BOOTY - The Summer Mashup Album'
( www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-booty-2012-summer-mashup-album.html ) , the tunes that had that eternal Summer vibe together for me were Devo's 'Through Being Cool' and The Godfathers' ' She Gives Me Love'. It's only natural for me to ponder how Devo would sound paired with some other cool music.
Similar circumstances appeared during my years of making mashups until I had a swell batch of them using Devo. I applied a bit of effort over the last few months & came up with enough new Devo mashups so I can now release them all as a full disc collection. Among the new tracks are 'Roof Rack Hadron Collider' (Devo vs Mokushi), 'Peek-A-Bop' (Devo vs The Ramones), & 'Experienced Jeepster' (Devo vs T.Rex). I even included a trio of remixes represented by 'Snowball', 'Pity You', & 'Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA'. Devo might not be the most well-known band about, but whenever I make a mashup with them, a significant amount of their fans emerge to enjoy them.
I was speaking to a pal from the far north of Europe who'd never heard of Devo. Apparently, the only song they'd ever hit big with in his part of the world was 1990's '
Post Post-Modern Man'
( www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgNdSTV-aRg ) , a representative track from the group who brought us synthed-up rock & roll with a de-evolutiionized sound, yet one that he'd missed. I hope those of you who already love the Devo brand dig this collection, but I hope even more that many of you will discover an exciting band with a rich discography. I figure the more of us listening, the more music they'll give us.
So, whether you know Devo or not, on this mashup tribute record you'll find exciting Devo music paired up with other music you're sure to be familiar with. Regular Bartcop E contributor Podgornio, The Mashup Pyschic told me you'll all love it, each & every one.
Mix Of The Week
Mr Lovley has released '1990 909 Side B - Oscillations & Reflections' as his latest excellent long piece on the ever-popular mix site
BMBX
( www.bmbx.org/2012/09/1990-909-side-b-oscillations-reflections/ ). Mr Lovley says "Earlier this year I posted a bleepy mix of early 1990s electronica (1990 909) that went down well on bmbx, and so I was encouraged to do side B. Instead of just more of the same, I opted to do a Side B consisting of a selection of electronica and chillout tracks that I used to listen to at the same time, cut with a few samples from some of the artists involved. I was a bit hampered by my vinyl being in a loft a few thousand miles away, so there may be a sequel at a later date! This mix is dedicated to anyone who ever went to the legendary Oscillate club nights in Birmingham, where I was fortunate enough to hear many of these tracks for the first time in the perfect setting."
Mashup Tip
Don't take making mashups too seriously. It's only monging.
Latest Useo Thing
To make my regular contributions to the

& the latter is 'Its All Too Much Machines' (The Beatles vs Mark Reeve & Dean Demanuele And Pig & Dan)
( www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/09/its-all-too-much-machines-beatles-vs.html ) . So you go from Classic Rock vs Punk to Classic Rock vs South Florida underground club. Stream or download today.

Chris Francescani: Boy Scouts Face Release Of Damaging Child Sex Abuse Files (Reuters)
The Boy Scouts of America could face a wave of bad publicity as decades of records of confirmed or alleged child molesters within the U.S. organization are expected to be released in coming weeks. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported the organization failed to report allegations of sex abuse of scouts by adult leaders and volunteers to police in hundreds of cases from 1970 to 1991. In some cases, the Boy Scouts helped the accused "cover their tracks," the paper said.

I honestly can't believe that there are 18 (if I counted right and didn't miss one) added chemical preservatives to this sandwich. The FDA allows food companies to add these preservatives in limited quantities, however, they do not prohibit companies from adding different preservatives all together by letting them combine different food items that make one big whopping dose.

Charles Schulz said that his children had given him a total of three lines that he had used in "Peanuts." At dinner, Amy, his daughter, was talking quite a lot, and Mr. Schulz asked her, "Couldn't you be quiet for just a little while?" Shortly afterward, she was buttering a piece of bread and asked, "Am I buttering too loud for you?" Craig, his son, often had dirty fingernails. One day, they were clean and his parents asked how he had gotten them so clean. Craig answered, "I used toothpaste." And when Monty, another son, was in kindergarten, Mr. Schulz read him a bedtime story and tried to get him to go to sleep, and Monty said that he didn't want to close his eyes. Why? "Because it's dark in there."

"I'm Dreaming"
Randy Newman
Randy Newman is weighing in on the presidential election, and he's playing the race card through a song he wrote called "I'm Dreaming."
The piano tune features the refrain: "I'm dreaming of a white president." It is full of satirical, sarcastic - and signature - Newman anecdotes about someone who votes for the president because he is white.
Newman, who is white, is openly supporting President Barack Obama. He says he wants the public to find comedic relief in the song, but to also know he's serious about his thoughts that racism is well and alive in the world - and in the current presidential race. He called racism "the great issue of this country."
The song will be released as a free download Tuesday and Newman is encouraging listeners to donate to the United Negro College Fund.
"I'm Dreaming" features lyrics like: "He won't be the brightest, perhaps, but he'll be the whitest, and I'll vote for that." He said as he wrote the song the lyrics "didn't come that easy."
Newman believes Obama will be re-elected in November and feels that Republican contender Mitt Romney isn't a "serious candidate for president."

Orthodox Russian Deacon Stands Up For
Pussy Riot
Sergei Baranov keeps his clerical robes hanging neatly in his closet, but he believes he will never again wear them inside a Russian Orthodox Church.
Baranov, who had led a quiet life as a deacon in the small city of Tambov, became an Internet celebrity last month when he asked to be defrocked in an open letter to the Moscow patriarchate, saying he was outraged by the church's stance against three members of the punk band Pussy Riot.
The feminist rockers were sentenced to two years in prison after singing a "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral, a stunt that divided Russians.
Even some of the devout who did not approve of the women's high kicks at the cathedral's pulpit in February spoke out against the trial and what appeared to be the church's heavy-handed involvement. Baranov gave them a strong public voice - and gave up his calling in order to back up his beliefs.
"Everyone prays as they can," Baranov said of the Pussy Riot members. "And with their act they exposed the ills and blisters of society. We should have done that a long time ago."

In a statement, Stewart quipped that "The Rumble" will be entertaining for all, including "people who just enjoy yelling."

Sued Over Sammy Davis Biopic
Byron Allen
Byron Allen's plan to make a biographical movie out of Sammy Davis, Jr.'s life has hit a bum note with a man claiming to already own the rights to the story, and now Allen is being sued to the tune of $35 million.
In a complaint filed at Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, Rick Appling claims that he had acquired the rights to make a movie out of "The Candy Man" singer Davis' life from his daughter,Tracey Davis, in Feb 2011.
According to Appling, he paid to maintain the rights to the story for three years, and teamed with Invasion TV and Ampersand Media to develop the project, even attracting the interest of Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way.
However, in December of that year, Appling read that Allen's Entertainment Studios had acquired the rights to the story from Davis in order to make a movie as well, and since then Appling's partners have cooled on the project, saying that two different companies claiming ownership of the rights to Davis' life would be a deal-breaker.
Appling claims that, during a phone call, Byron acknowledged to Appling that Davis told him that she had already sold the rights to Appling when she and Allen executed their own agreement.

Transparency In Government
Prince Charles
The British government must hand over confidential letters to ministers from Prince Charles, judges ruled Tuesday - a decision that could shed light on the opinionated heir to the throne's attempts to lobby politicians.
Three judges on a freedom of information tribunal decided that it is in the public interest "for there to be transparency as to how and when Prince Charles seeks to influence government."
The ruling comes in response to requests by The Guardian newspaper, which has been asking for seven years for the letters to be released.
Several government departments had refused to divulge them, arguing it might breach unwritten constitutional rules on the relationship between the monarchy and the government, and that it would discourage the prince from speaking frankly.
But critics accuse Charles of overstepping boundaries and meddling in political decisions. The 63-year-old prince has strong views on issues including ecology, alternative medicine - both of which he supports- and modern architecture, of which he takes a dim view.

Pizza Museum
Philly
How much does Brian Dwyer love pizza?
Let us count the ways: He holds the Guinness World Record for largest collection of pizza memorabilia; he has a caricature of himself, eating pizza, tattooed on his back with the phrase "Totally saucesome!"; and he is the driving force behind Pizza Brain, which he describes as the nation's first pizza museum.
The quirky but unassuming establishment that Dwyer just opened with three partners in Philadelphia is part art gallery, part eatery. It's a place to enjoy a slice or two of artisan pie while gawking at pizza-related photos, records, knickknacks and videos.
"We thought it was a funny idea, and we started doing some research," Dwyer said. "And when we discovered that nowhere on earth was there a physical place, a monument built to pizza, we said, 'This is going to be huge.'"
One wall is covered with framed pizza-related photos and magazine covers; another boasts dozens of vinyl records, like the soundtrack to "Mystic Pizza" and a holiday album from Domino's. Display boxes are scattered throughout the eclectic space - including built into the floor - to show off pizza-bearing figurines from Homer Simpson and Spider-Man to the Tasmanian Devil and Pillsbury Doughboy. A cluster of small TVs plays pizza-related shows, while a huge pizza mural surrounds the back patio.

In Memory
Steve Sabol
NFL Films President Steve Sabol, half of the father-son team that revolutionized sports broadcasting and mythologized pro football into the country's favorite sport, died Tuesday from brain cancer. He was 69.
In March 2011, Sabol was diagnosed with a tumor on the left side of his brain after being hospitalized for a seizure.
His father, Ed, founded NFL Films, and Steve was there working beside him right from the start in 1964. They introduced a series of innovations now taken for granted today, from slow-motion replays to blooper reels to sticking microphones on coaches and players. And they hired the "Voice of God," John Facenda, to read lyrical descriptions in solemn tones.
Ed Sabol was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year. The two received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2003.
Steve Sabol received 35 Emmys for writing, cinematography, editing, directing and producing. No one else had ever earned that many in as many different categories.
He began his career as a cinematographer under his father. Steve was the perfect fit for the job: an all-Rocky Mountain Conference running back at Colorado College majoring in art history.
The Sabols' advances included everything from reverse angle replays to filming pregame locker room speeches to setting highlights to pop music.
An accomplished collage artist, Sabol exhibited at the ArtExpo in New York, the Avant Gallery in Miami, the Govinda Gallery in Washington, the Milan Gallery in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Garth Davidson Gallery in Moorestown, N.J.
It was Steve's high school football games in Philadelphia that gave Ed his only experience filming sports before he won the rights to chronicle the 1962 NFL championship game.
