The Buddha says not to dwell on the past, or dream of the future, but concentrate on the moment. Or maybe that was Dr. Oz. Either way, I don't like to look back at the 2000s, when I can help it, because my memories of the first decade of the 21st century are all tied up with George W. Bush.

The directors' statement for the upcoming documentary After Tiller, which follows the four remaining doctors in the country who perform third trimester abortions after the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in 2009, drives home how high the stakes are for the film's subjects: "They thought that if more Americans could meet them, and hear where they were coming from-even if they still disagreed with the work that they did-they at least might not want to kill them."

This system keeps me organized, but it's not as sophisticated as Ryder Carroll's Bullet Journal system. Mr. Carroll uses a simple blank journal every month. He builds in a calendar and index page and manages his task list with shape-coded bullets.
Obituary for William Freddie McCullough (Savannah Morning News)
Freddie adored the ladies. And they adored him. There isn't enough space here to list all of the women from Freddie's past. There isn't enough space in the Bloomingdale phone book. A few of the more colorful ones were Momma Margie, Crazy Pam, Big Tittie Wanda, Spacy Stacy and Sweet Melissa (he explained that nickname had nothing to do with her attitude). He attracted more women than a shoe sale at Macy's. He got married when he was 18, but it didn't last. Freddie was no quitter, however, so he gave it a shot two more times. It didn't work out with any of the wives, but he managed to stay friends with them and their parents.

Kris Ashman Cypress is very tall, as was her mother. When Kris was a teenager and self-conscious about her height, she asked her mother if she could have an operation to shorten the bones in her arms and legs. Her mother replied, "Yes, but we can only afford to do your legs. So I guess your arms will drag beside you when you walk." Kris writes, "When I finally got the joke, she grabbed me and told me how beautiful I was and how much she loved me. It was her humor and way of looking at life that shocked me out of my teenage bubble of insecurity."

Mass. Democrat
Carl Sciortino Jr.
Carl Sciortino Jr., a Democratic candidate in the special election for Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District, released a campaign ad Tuesday featuring his conservative father who describes the moment his son told him he was running for Congress.
"It was bad enough he went after the big banks and corporations in the legislature," Carl Sciortino Sr. says in the 60-second spot. "He wants to go to Congress to take on the NRA and the tea party." Sciortino Sr. is a member of the tea party.
"I won't give up on an assault weapons ban," Sciortino Jr. says.
"Also the right to choose, equal pay for women and equal rights for, well, everybody," the progressive candidate, one of the few openly gay members of Massachusetts House, continues.
"He's been like this for 35 years," an exasperated Sciortino Sr. says.

That's Entertainment
Fox News Channel is shuffling its prime-time lineup for the first time in more than a decade, adding a show with Megyn Kelly and giving Sean Hannity and Greta Van Susteren new time slots.
Fox Rupert News
Fox had already announced that Kelly, a daytime star out on maternity leave, would return with a prime-time show but wouldn't say when it would air. On Tuesday, Fox said that her new show, "The Kelly File," would displace Hannity at 9 p.m. Eastern and move him to 10. Van Susteren, whose show currently airs at 10 p.m., will be switched to 7 p.m.
Fox News' lineup has been remarkably stable. With the exception of Hannity dropping his former liberal partner, Alan Colmes, the lineup has been the same since 2002 after Van Susteren moved over from CNN. Fox News usually beats its cable news rivals in the ratings by a large margin in prime time.
Left untouched on the schedule is Bill O'Reilly's 8 p.m. ET time slot. He has long had the top-rated program in cable news.

Stephen Hawking
Physicist Stephen Hawking says he thinks terminally ill patients should have access to assisted suicide, as long as there are checks to prevent abuse.
"I think those who have a terminal illness and are in great pain should have the right to choose to end their lives, and those who help them should be free from prosecution," Hawking told the BBC.
In the interview, which the Cambridge University professor gave in advance of the release of a documentary about his life, Hawking recalled his experience being on life support after pneumonia. His wife had the option of turning off the life support, but he wanted to continue living.
Assisted suicide is one of the most divisive issues around the globe. It is legal in Oregon, Washington and Vermont, as well as several European countries - but not in the United Kingdom, where Hawking comes from.
Proponents argue that allowing people who are terminally ill and in incredible pain to end their lives is compassionate. Opponents argue that legalizing assisted suicide will allow caregivers to pressure or trick the disabled, the elderly and the financially insolvent into consenting in order to avoid becoming burdens.

Ballet Director Returns
Bolshoi
Wearing dark glasses over his damaged eyes, artistic director Sergei Filin returned to the Bolshoi Ballet on Tuesday to guide its troupe through a new season, eight months after he was nearly blinded in an acid attack.
The attack on Filin, who returned to Russia at the weekend after seven months of treatment at a clinic in Germany, exposed bitter rivalries at Russia's premier cultural institution, where Filin had the power to make or break careers.
Blinking through dark glasses under the theatre's bright lights in the gold-encrusted main hall, the 42-year-old thanked his fans for their support.
Bolshoi spokeswoman Katerina Novikova said Filin had undergone at least 22 operations on his eyes and face since the attack, and he said more were in the pipeline in Germany.
Novikova said it remained to be seen how many duties Filin could carry out with more operations planned.

Former Miami Mansion Sold
Versace
One of America's landmark homes, the Miami Beach mansion that once belonged to Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace, was sold at an auction on Tuesday for $41.5 million to a business group that includes the owners of the Jordache jeans brand.
The 1930s-era Mediterranean-style estate, which has 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and a pool inlaid with 24-karat gold, was auctioned off as part of a bankruptcy proceeding by its current owner, telecom magnate Peter Loftin.
Bidding opened at $25.5 million and the winning offer was made by the current mortgage holders of the property, VM South Beach, a company affiliated with New York's Nakash family, which controls Jordache Enterprises.
The group beat out two other bidders, including billionaire Donald Trump (R-Opportunist) and a Florida developer who owns the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club.

Century-Old Mystery
Message In A Bottle
A Canadian has found a message in a bottle that was plopped into the ocean nearly 107 years ago, but he still doesn't know what its early twentieth century author had to say.
Steve Thurber from Courtenay was walking at Schooner's Cove in Tofino, B.C. last week when he found a sealed bottle with a message inside, according to Global News. Peeking through the glass he could make out the date, 1906, and a name - Earl Willard, a passenger on the Steamer Rainier travelling from San Francisco to Bellingham, Global reported.
However, Thurber told the Victoria Times-Colonist he doesn't want to open the bottle yet, because he doesn't want to damage the bottle or its contents.
A bottle sent adrift in 1914 as part of a scientific study on water currents holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest ever found, but if the date on Thurber's bottle is confirmed, it would beat that record.

14th Wife
King Mswati III
Swaziland's King Mswati III has chosen an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant as his 14th wife, a palace spokesman said Tuesday, days before a much-criticised parliamentary vote.
"I can confirm that the king has introduced to the nation a new liphovela (royal fiancee)," said Ludzidzini palace governor Timothy Mtetwa.
Mswati, a 45-year-old who is sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch, introduced Sindiswa Dlamini at a Reed Dance celebration over the weekend, Mtetwa told AFP.
The young woman graduated from Mbabane's St. Francis High School last year and is a finalist in the Miss Cultural Heritage beauty pageant. The winner will be announced on September 28.
The wedding only takes place once the fiancee falls pregnant. Dlamini will then become Mswati's 14th wife.
The monarch's colourful private life is off-limits in local media, but has drawn a lot of international interest.

Justifiable Homicides
Killings deemed justifiable rose sharply in states where Stand Your Ground self-defense laws allow individuals who claim to be in fear of their lives to use lethal force rather than retreat, according to a new study by a coalition of groups who favor greater gun control.
The overall justifiable homicide rate jumped 53 percent in 22 states that adopted Stand Your Ground laws between 2005 and 2007, according to the study sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the National Urban League and Vote Vets.
By contrast, states without Stand Your Ground laws saw an average 5 per cent drop in justifiable homicides, the study found.
The 28-page report, published on Monday, compared the number of justifiable homicides committed in the five-year periods before and after enactment of the laws. It concludes that Stand Your Ground laws have undermined public safety and tied the hands of law enforcement officers.

In Memory
Slawomir Mrozek
Dissident playwright Slawomir Mrozek, considered by many to be one of Poland's greatest writers for the stage, was buried during a state ceremony on Tuesday.
People waited in the rain in the southern historic city of Krakow, where Mrozek's career began, to sign a condolence book. Then a hearse drawn by two black horses took the metal urn to its resting place at St. Peter and Paul church. The funeral Mass was conducted by Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, who served as a personal secretary of the late Pope John Paul II.
Poland completed its transformation from a communist to a democratic country in 1989. Long before then, Mrozek made his name with surrealistic, satirical plays, notably the 1964 "Tango," which slyly ridiculed communism.
He also made pointed but skeptical observations about human nature. That convoluted form protected Mrozek from censorship and allowed for his works to be staged in Poland.
"Tango" and some of his other plays, including one-act pieces such as "Striptease" and "Out at Sea," were staged in London and Off Broadway, and were ranked along with the works of French dramatist Eugene Ionesco. Both deal with the individual sense of freedom and with a group's power of manipulation.
Born in 1930 in Borzecin, near Krakow, Mrozek tried studying art and architecture but did finish his studies. Instead, he became a cartoonist and a reporter, but soon switched to writing short stories and plays, gaining critical acclaim, especially with "Tango."
A communist party member at first, he was stripped of his passport after criticizing Poland's participation in the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia to crush its Prague Spring reforms. He remained in France, where he was at the time.
Mrozek also lived in Italy, Mexico and the United States before returning to Poland for a few years in 1996.
He died on Aug. 15 in Nice, France, where he had moved in 2008.
