National Toy Hall of Fame
The pings of pinball machines, squeaks of swings and the smack of punches between fighting robots have occupied arcades, living rooms and playgrounds for decades as toy-lovers devoted hours to battling for the win.
Now a dozen novelties and games including Care Bears, Uno cards and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots will compete for a place in the National Toy Hall of Fame after organizers unveiled the list of finalists on Tuesday.
After evaluating each on criteria including innovation, longevity, educational qualities and iconic status, judges at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, will announce just two or three toys on Nov. 10 that have been chosen for a place in the hall.
Nominated by people from around the world, this year's list includes toys and pastimes such as Transformers action figures, Nerf products and the murder mystery board game Clue made by Hasbro Inc. HAS.O It also features an unexpected diversion: bubble wrap.
"A toy can be whatever people make of everyday objects," said Shane Rhinewald, a spokesman for the museum. "In the past we've had a cardboard box and it was actually inducted into The Hall of Fame."

To Receive Treatment
Chelsea Manning
U.S. soldier Chelsea Manning, serving a 35-year prison term for passing classified files to WikiLeaks, ended her hunger strike on Tuesday after the Army said she would be allowed to receive gender transition surgery, the American Civil Liberties Union said.
The 28-year-old Army private, who was born male but revealed after being convicted of espionage that she identifies as a woman, announced the hunger strike on Friday.
Manning's treatment will begin with the surgery that was recommended by her psychologist in April, the ACLU, which represented Manning, said in a statement. Manning is held in Kansas.
According to Manning's representatives, doctors have recommended that as part of her treatment for gender dysphoria the soldier, who began hormone therapy in 2015, be allowed to follow "female hair grooming standards."
ACLU staff attorney Chase Strangio said in Tuesday's statement that the government plans to still enforce the male hair standards.

Caribbean Coral
Fabien Cousteau
Vast coral reefs surrounding this island are considered by many experts to be the healthiest and best-protected in the Caribbean, and that makes Bonaire an ideal spot to test whether 3D printing technology can help preserve these vital marine habitats around the world.
A partnership that includes the foundation of ocean explorer Fabien Cousteau will be using the rapidly developing layered printing technology to design structures that are virtually identical to the ornate natural coral formations that have long made the southern Caribbean island a top diving destination. They hope their artificial creations will foster natural growth of the reef faster than other methods.
The artificial coral will be made of sandstone and limestone and will be deployed just offshore from the Harbour Village Beach Club, a Bonaire resort that is active in conservation efforts and is a partner with Cousteau's Ocean Learning Center in the project.
Reef-building coral is a tiny polyp-like animal that builds a calcium-carbonate shell around itself and survives in a symbiotic relationship with certain types of algae. Its reefs serve as vital spawning and feeding grounds for numerous marine creatures. It comes in some 1,500 known species, ranging from soft, undulating fans to those with hard skeletons that form reef bases.
The partners will monitor the progress of the artificial structures with underwater cameras already in place, capturing images of the vibrant reefs that are a feature of the Bonaire National Marine Park.

Calls For Suspending Congressional Pay In Stalemates
Evan Bayh
U.S. Senate candidate Evan Bayh said on Tuesday that he wants Congress to prohibit lawmakers from promoting themselves with taxpayer-funded mailings while also barring them from collecting a paycheck during a government shutdown or prolonged budget stalemate.
The Democratic former Indiana governor and U.S. Senator labeled them "common sense" proposals, but also used them to criticize his opponent, U.S. Rep. Todd Young.
"It is true that he is one of the top users of (taxpayer-funded) mail. It's also true that he voted to close the government," Bayh said in an interview with the Associated Press.
Until now, Bayh has tried to avoid direct mention of his opponent, relying instead on a well-financed series of negative ads targeting Young.
In contrast, Young has repeatedly launched personal attacks, going so far as to call Bayh "a fundamentally flawed person" during a recent news conference. On Monday, shortly before former resident George W. Bush (R-Failure) headlined a fundraiser on his behalf, Young said the race was tightening and declared that he has "momentum."

Swedish Appeals Court To Rule On Friday
Assange
A Swedish appeals court said Monday that it would rule at week's end on whether to rescind the detention order against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Later in the day, the prosecutor's office in Ecuador said Assange would be questioned next month at his country's embassy in London, where Assange sought shelter four years ago.
Assange is wanted by Swedish prosecutors in a rape investigation that stems from his visit to the country in 2010. He denies the allegations and has asked Swedish courts to repeal the detention order with which prosecutors sought his extradition from Britain.
A lower court dismissed his request in May. The Svea Appeals court said it will issue its ruling on Assange's appeal on Friday.
In Ecuador's capital, the prosecutor's office issued a statement saying Ecuadorean prosecutor Wilson Toainga would question Assange at the embassy on Oct. 17 on behalf of Swedish prosecutors. He will interrogate Assange based on questions submitted by Swedish prosecutors and will seek to take "body fluid samples," which under Ecuadorean law can only take place with Assange's consent.

Protections Rejected
American Pika
Federal officials on Tuesday rejected greater protections for four species including the rabbit-like American pika, which researchers warn is disappearing from areas of the Western U.S. as climate change alters its mountain habitat.
The pika's range is shrinking across southern Utah, northeastern California and in the Great Basin that covers most of Nevada and parts of Utah, Oregon, Idaho and California, according to a U.S. Geological Survey study released last month.
Exposure to ambient temperatures of 78 degrees or higher can kill the mountain-dwelling mammals, wildlife officials say.
But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in documents released Tuesday that pika adapt to warmer temperatures by seeking refuge beneath rock fields in the summer. As a result, surface temperatures may not be the best predictor of population declines, the agency said.
The agency also said the most severe effects of climate change are felt at elevations below 8,200 feet (2,499 meters), which is near the lower limit of the pika's range in the West. That suggests pika habitat "has not experienced the more substantial changes" of reduced snowpack due to climate change, the wildlife service said.

Extracted From Hole In Argentina
Gancedo Meteorite
Some meteorites are so big they need a name. Meet the Gancedo meteorite, a gigantic space rock extracted from the ground over the weekend using heavy machinery. It was found near the village of Gancedo in Argentina in an area known as Campo del Cielo ("Field of Heaven").
Campo del Cielo is rife with iron meteorites estimated to have fallen around 4,000 years ago. What makes Gancedo unusual is its massive size, with a weight estimated at around 68,000 pounds (31,000 kilograms).
News organization Compacto Nea posted a video of the meteorite extraction on YouTube Monday. It was a complicated affair requiring excavation equipment, chains, cables and plenty of heavy lifting to remove it from its impact crater. Parts of the iron meteorite have a rusty orange hue.
The largest meteorite ever uncovered sits in southern Africa. The Hoba meteorite is estimated to weigh more than 132,000 pounds (60,000 kilograms). It's so big, it hasn't been moved and is now a tourist site. Argentinian news source Norte says the Gancedo meteorite is the second largest ever discovered.
