M Is FOR MASHUP - September 8th, 2010
September 2010 Mashup Albums
By DJ Useo & Others
Hey everybody, I got a new guitar & strings when I've been without one for quite a while. I can't stand to put it down for long, so I'm going to adopt some text from the mashers own words for this article. Let's take a look at some great new collections that'll rock your world.
First up is S.I.R.'s new mashup album 'Strictly Sensual'. I'm always impressed with S.I.R.'s mixing & this record is finestkind. He is able to make an alternative-leaning person like me enjoy very mainstream artists through his creative combinations. In his own words -
' "Strictly Sensual" continues the "Strictly ..." series of S.I.R. albums and comes up with a pretty obvious concept: It's an album for those certain hours when you are alone with your girlfriend or boyfriend and enjoy your time together.
Among the tracks are new renditions of old classics such as the much loved Motown tune "Sexual Healing" by soul legend Marvin Gaye and more recent songs like "Touch my Body" by pop diva Mariah Carey and the hip hop track "Lollipop" by Lil Wayne & Static Major that got a totally new vibe on here. Jazz friends get their money's worth with a special version of the late Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat". Instrumentals that are used include artists like Usher, Nelly Furtado and the unforgettable Lynden David Hall. The album closes with a brand new duet by US rapper Nelly and German band Monrose who show their mutual attraction to each other in their music video to "Hot in Herre (It's Strictly Physical)".
If you like smooth r'n'b and soul love jams with a hip hop and jazz influence here and there, you should definitely have a listen to "Strictly Sensual"!

Next we confront Kai & his new gem of a collection called 'Sounds For The Neighborhood Watch Pt.2' A mixtape of unwanted mashups'. Kai has a way with mashups that compels listening. He tells us more now -
'
"SFTNW Pt.2" began in 2007 as a follow up to an earlier, mostly non-mashup based mix I had released in 2006: "Sounds For The Neighbourhood Watch". Work on SFTNW Pt.2 gradually slowed and eventually halted altogether due to other commitments. Three years later, neglected and unreleased, these 40 mashful minutes popped up on my iPod by way of the shuffle setting, and immediately I felt compelled to open up the laptop, tidy up around the edges and finally upload this thing. What you'll hear are ten spontaneous mashups that occurred through the gradual progress I made on the mix (and one track ('Her Majesty's...') previously released on my 2009 album, "Recycle Your Recycled"). Mainly b-side material here; but it's all good fun really and there's a couple of true faves to my ears in there too (you'll even hear a mashup which uses one of my very early attempts at an original house track as it's backing)!'

Mash2Mix has assembled one fine collection of only Dutch bootleggers' tracks called 'The Lowlands Mashup Bootleg 2010'. He tells us 'Tomorrow the Lowlands festival starts in the Netherlands. For the occasion of this a compilation bootleg with mashups.....only Dutch mashupproducers mixing some Lowlands 2010 artists.G3rst,who appears on the record sez 'I just got back from the Dutch Lowlands festival, and needless to say this album deffo is my cup a joe. Plus of course the fact that I'm on it helps greatly. Hehehe...'

Not leastwise we reach my favorite of all these, the latest Beatles Remixers Group collection called 'Beatle Blends'. They said of it 'The reason I wanted put this project up to the Remixers Forum is that you guys seem to be very fast with your mixes and mash ups, also with your song of the month challenge you may already have what I'm looking for.
I want this album to be the fastest BRG release ever, announce today, release by the end of the month! The main rule for "Blends" is that they have a Beatle lead vocal.'

Pakistan Visit
Angelina Jolie
American movie star Angelina Jolie met flood victims in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday and appealed to the international community to provide aid needed to help the country recover from its worst natural disaster.
The flow of aid money has stalled in recent days, and officials expressed hope the two-day visit by Jolie - who serves as a "goodwill ambassador" for the U.N.'s refugee agency - will convince foreign countries and individuals to open their wallets.
The 35-year-old actress said she met with many people whose lives have been devastated by the floods, including mothers who lost their children and an elderly Pakistani couple who feared they would never be able to rebuild the home they lost.
She toured the area wearing a long black robe and a black headscarf adorned with a thin red stripe - the kind of conservative clothing worn by many Muslim women in Pakistan.

May Attend Oscars After All
Jean-Luc Godard
Jean-Luc Godard may, indeed, make it to Hollywood in November to pick up his honorary Oscar, despite an earlier report indicating the French director was too old to travel and a little disgruntled about the award.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday it had received "a cordial, handwritten note" from 79-year-old Godard in response to its notification that he would receive a statuette.
"In it," the academy said, "Godard graciously thanked the organization for the honor and referred to himself as 'the fourth musketeer,' in acknowledgment of the fact that three others (film historian Kevin Brownlow, Francis Ford Coppola and Eli Wallach) are among the year's honorees. His note, relayed to the Academy late last week via an assistant to Godard, indicated that, schedule permitting, he would come to Los Angeles for the November 13 Governors Awards event."
The latest twist in the academy's effort to honor the elusive Godard contradicts a report in The Australian newspaper over the weekend, in which his companion and producing partner Anne-Marie Mieville cited the director's age as the reason for his not wanting to make the trip.

CNN Christens New Talk Show
'Parker Spitzer'
CNN is unveiling the title and premiere date of its new prime-time talk show pairing former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and conservative columnist Kathleen Parker.
The name is, simply, "Parker Spitzer." CNN said Tuesday the show will premiere Oct. 4, airing weeknights at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
The second-billed Spitzer will begin the show perhaps best known for having resigned as governor in disgrace two years ago following a prostitution scandal. Parker has been a Southern-based newspaper columnist for much of her life and won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary.
"Parker Spitzer" will face tough competition on rival cable news networks: Bill O'Reilly (R-Loofah Lover) on Fox News Channel and Keith Olbermann at MSNBC.

Amy Poehler
Comic actress Amy Poehler returns later this month to the set of "Saturday Night Live," this time as guest host for the launch of the show's 36th season on NBC.
NBC's "Parks and Recreation" star and former "SNL" regular takes over hosting duties September 25 with Katy Perry tagging along as musical guest.
Joining Poehler -- a three-time Emmy nominee -- as "SNL" hosts this fall are Bryan Cranston of the AMC series "Breaking Bad" and Jane Lynch from Fox television's musical hit "Glee." Both stars will appear on the late-night NBC sketch comedy show in October.
Four new comics also are joining the "Saturday Night Live" ensemble as regular players this season -- Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah.

N.Zealand Lets In Riff Raff
Richard O'Brien
Riff Raff has been granted residency in New Zealand after The Rocky Horror Show creator waged a lengthy battle to move to the country where he came of age, his immigration adviser said Tuesday.
Richard O'Brien, the 68-year-old British-born creator of the cult musical, wanted to retire to New Zealand but was told in June he did not fit the criteria for citizenship or permanent residency.
O'Brien's immigration adviser Dion Smart said authorities in Wellington had overturned the decision, clearing the way for him to move to New Zealand.
"They've given him residency. His passport will be stamped this week," Smart told AFP.

Returning To A&E
"Steven Seagal Lawman"
Steven Seagal is back on patrol for a second season of his reality show "Lawman."
Production of the suburban New Orleans-based law enforcement show was shut down in April after the martial-arts star was accused of sexual harassment. The suspension order was given by deputy Seagal's boss, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff, who ruled the accusations would be a "distraction." After all, nobody is above the law.
But then the accuser dropped the lawsuit in July.
The eight episodes airing this fall were all previously shot. There's no decision on whether A&E will order additional episodes, and it's unclear if the sheriff's production ban is still in place.

Denied Parole
John Lennon's Killer
John Lennon's killer was again denied parole in New York, nearly 30 years after gunning down the ex-Beatle outside the musician's New York City apartment building.
A parole board decided not to release Mark David Chapman after interviewing him Tuesday by teleconference at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York.
It was Chapman's sixth appearance before the board since becoming eligible for parole in 2000. He will be eligible again in 2012.
Chapman, 55, had been scheduled to appear last month, but the hearing was postponed by parole officials, who said at the time they were awaiting additional information. They did not elaborate.

Deputy Who Arrested Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson
James Mee
The Los Angeles sheriff's deputy who arrested Mel "sugar Tits" Gibson for drunken driving in 2006 sued his department on Tuesday, claiming he has since been ostracized and passed over for promotions by the agency.
Deputy James Mee's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for loss of income, benefits, medical expenses and for emotional distress and mental suffering. Mee, who is Jewish, claims he was forced by his superiors to remove references to anti-Semitic slurs uttered by the actor-director during the arrest. Part of that report containing the slurs was leaked to the celebrity website TMZ.com, which also first reported the lawsuit.
Mee claims he was transferred after Gibson's arrest and has not been awarded promotions to a traffic investigator or motorcycle deputy position because of the alleged discrimination. The lawsuit claims the department violated its policies by taking four years to investigate the leak and that has hurt Mee's ability to be promoted.
In addition to stating that he was forced to alter his report on Gibson's arrest, the lawsuit claims one of his sergeants erased a videotape taken of Gibson in a booking area.

Jaguar Dumps Swimmer
Stephanie Rice
Luxury car maker Jaguar has cut its sponsorship of star Australia swimmer Stephanie Rice, a triple Olympic gold medalist, after she sent a tweet using an anti-gay slur.
Rice, 22, tweeted "Suck on that f--gots" after Australia's rugby union team, the Wallabies, defeated South Africa's Springboks on Saturday.
The swimmer, who won both individual medleys at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was part of Australia's victorious 4x200 freestyle team, later apologized and removed the comment.
A company spokeswoman confirmed the statement but declined to give any further details on the terms of Rice's agreement. Local media reported that Rice would be losing the late-model A$100,000-plus Jaguar that she has been driving since striking the deal.

Stephen Harper
The media furor over Fox News North has received new fuel from the revelation that Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper lunched in New York City with News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and Fox News president Roger Ailes.
Montreal-based Quebecor has faced a drum-beat of opposition since it proposed launching a right wing 24/7 news channel Sun TV News from January 1, 2011 to compete with existing local news channels run by the CTV and CBC networks.
But evidence of the secret March 2009 lunch -- uncovered by the Canadian Press newswire service through filings with the U.S. Justice Department in Washington -- has divided pundits here.
Also present at the Manhattan lunch was Kory Teneycke, a former communications chief for Harper, and now vp of development at Quebecor, spear-heading the drive to secure a broadcast license for Sun TV News.

Judge Orders Filmmaker Deposed
Joseph Berlinger
A judge ordered a documentary filmmaker Tuesday to face questions from Chevron lawyers to see if he can provide further inside information regarding a legal fight between Chevron and Ecuadoreans over oil contamination.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said in a written opinion that it was likely that filmmaker Joseph Berlinger and his associates have information that is highly relevant to the legal tussle. He ordered him deposed, along with his associates.
He said Chevron's lawyers can question Berlinger about discrepancies they claim occurred in statements he has made regarding 520 outtakes of his documentary "Crude," along with observations he made and communications he had with others when the cameras weren't rolling. The judge earlier this year ordered Berlinger to turn over outtakes, though a federal appeals panel later narrowed the list of outtakes Chevron could pursue.
The dispute over conduct in the case arises in a 17-year-old legal fight that began when Ecuadoreans said their land was contaminated during three decades of oil exploration and extraction by Texaco Inc. Texaco became a wholly owned subsidiary of San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron Corp. in 2001.

Resigning As News Head
David Westin
ABC News President David Westin said on Monday he was resigning after 13 years, according to a memo he sent to employees that was released on the network's website.
"I've always admired those few who know when it's time to move on. This is the right time for me," said Westin, who added he would remain in his post through the end of the year.
The New York Times quoted an ABC staff member as saying the decision was tied partly to a long-standing conflict between Westin and ABC management, including parent Walt Disney Co, over the news division's financial situation.
The staff member was quoted as saying that managers at ABC and Disney had pressed Westin to increase profits at the news division and were unhappy with his efforts to reach that goal.

Man Gets 4 Years For Handbag Heist
Kirsten Dunst
A man convicted of stealing Kirsten Dunst's designer purse from a New York City hotel suite has been sentenced to four years in prison.
James Jimenez was convicted of burglary in June. He was sentenced Tuesday.
A jury had found him guilty of stealing Dunst's $2,000 designer purse. Actor Simon Pegg's cell phone and other items also were taken from the chic hotel in 2007.
The actors were staying at the hotel while filming "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People."

Monte Carlo Replaces
Lance Burton
The Monte Carlo casino-resort has replaced longtime Las Vegas Strip headline magician Lance Burton with a hip-hop dance crew that shot to fame through a reality television competition, hotel officials announced Tuesday.
Burton ended a 14-year run at the Monte Carlo on Saturday. He and the Monte Carlo announced their split in April, less than a year after he signed a six-year contract extension.
Jabbawockeez, the first-season winner of MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" competition, will replace Burton in October.
Burton, 50, has not announced his next plans beyond a vacation. He had performed at the Monte Carlo since the day it opened in 1996. Neither he, nor hotel officials, have given a specific reason for parting ways, but Burton in an April interview compared the split to a divorce for "irreconcilable differences."

Animated Doodle Mystery
Google
For a dozen years, Google Inc. has been occasionally swapping its everyday logo for a "doodle," a sketch celebrating holidays, inventions, artists and sporting events, and showcasing designs from contest-winning students.
Usually, Google makes it clear what's being celebrated, using the doodle as a lure to teach Web surfers more about the topic - artist Nam June Paik on his birthday, for example, or the history of China's lantern festival, to pick just two of more than 300 past designs.
But Google has so far left Tuesday's doodle a mystery, prompting people to speculate about the meaning of this mass of blue, red, yellow and green bouncing balls that skitter across Google.com as if allergic to the mouse pointer before settling into the familiar logo pattern.
Online, some folks speculate that the doodle marks a celebration of Google's September birthday. Others believe it's a way to show off emerging Web coding technology that, among other things, will speed up animations like this one. Yet more curious searchers note that Tuesday marks the day a television pioneer transmitted an image electronically for the first time.

Hostage Tricked Captors
Kosuke Tsuneoka
A Japanese journalist held hostage in Afghanistan for five months managed to send out a message via Twitter that he was alive when his captors asked him how to use a cell phone.
Just days before he was freed, Kosuke Tsuneoka said one of the militants brought him his new cell phone and asked the prisoner to set it up.
The younger militants were more interested in accessing Al-Jazeera on the phone, but Tsuneoka managed to shift their attention to Twitter, successfully getting them to ask him to demonstrate how it worked.
A couple of days later, the militants - whom Tsuneoka said identified themselves as members of Hizb-e-Islami but posed as Taliban to the Japanese government - set him free in part because he is a Muslim. He had converted to Islam in 2000.

David Dortort
David Dortort, who created "Bonanza," the top-rated western that aired for 14 years on the NBC television network, died September 5 at his Los Angeles home. He was 93.
Dortort also created "The High Chaparral," which originally followed "Bonanza" on Sunday nights on NBC and ran for three seasons.
Dortort pitched "Bonanza" in 1959 as a way of helping to promote the sale of color television sets manufactured by the U.S. electronics company RCA, then the parent company of NBC.
"Bonanza" would be filmed in color in scenic Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and feature a cast of relative unknowns -- Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Dan Blocker and Pernell Roberts -- as members of the fictional Cartwright family.
Departing from the typical TV western formula of the day that focused on lone gunslingers and drifters, Dortort chose instead to depict the lives and adventures of a widowed rancher and his three sons living together on the Ponderosa Ranch.
"Bonanza" was canceled in 1973, a year after the beloved Blocker, who played Eric "Hoss" Cartwright, died unexpectedly after complications from gall bladder surgery.
Dortort went on to produce several "Bonanza" spinoffs including "Bonanza: The Next Generation" (1988), a prequel for cable network Pax TV and other Old West-based projects.
Before "Bonanza," Dortort wrote episodes for such series as "Lassie," "The Restless Gun," "Climax!" and "Waterfront" and contributed to the screenplay for the 1952 Nicholas Ray film "The Lusty Men."

Clive Donner
Clive Donner, the British film director whose movies helped set the tone for the swinging sixties, died Tuesday at the age of 84, his family said.
He had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease and died in London.
Donner's career began at Pinewood Studios outside London when he was 15, his cousin Gavin Asher said.
"One of the things he was most proud of was what he did for the careers of quite a lot of British actors including Alan Bates, David Hemmings and Ian McKellen," he said.
Donner directed "Nothing But The Best", a 1964 comedy featuring Bates and Denholm Elliott.
He directed 1965 comedy "What's New Pussycat?", starring Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Woody Allen, and Ursula Andress, and "Luv" (1967), featuring Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk.
Coming of age film "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" (1968) captured the spirit of the times.
Donner later moved to Los Angeles to work in television.
He and his late wife had no children.

Glenn Shadix
Glenn Shadix, the actor best remembered for his portrayal of a portly, pretentious designer in the comedy "Beetlejuice," has died. He was 58.
Personal manager Juliet Green told The Associated Press that the Alabama native died in his Birmingham home Tuesday morning.
Green did not immediately know the cause of death. The actor's sister, Susan Gagne, told The Birmingham News he had been using a wheelchair to get around and he appeared to have fallen in his kitchen and hit his head.
Shadix starred in the popular 1988 Tim Burton film as a droll interior designer who dabbled in voodoo. He also was a voice actor in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and appeared in dozens of TV shows.
