M Is FOR MASHUP - September 7th, 2011
September Brought Me Mashups
By DJ Useo
Ok, after last weeks' column with only six mashups, I got a few emails asking for more tracks next time. Luckily, for those who wrote, there are immediately available some great new mashup collections as well as a large batch of new individual tracks. I'll leave it to y'all to locate the solo mixes (try any mashup forum, or the contact links at any good bootleggers' site), & instead focus on some swell new collections. A quick reminder, mashup bootleg albums are always FREE! Whoopee!
01 - First up we have S.I.R.'s 'Back in the Day Today - The Aaliyah MashUp Tribute'. In the words of S.I.R. himself
"Back in the Day Today - The Aaliyah MashUp Tribute comes up with some of Aaliyah's greatest hits in all brand-new versions. From new renditions of her smash songs "Try Again" and "Rock the Boat" to Jazz remixes of her classic tunes such as 'Are You That Somebody', this album also includes cover versions by aspiring upcoming artists.
Furthermore, today's greatest artists of the likes of Usher, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga take over Lili's work and re-interprete her tracks in a new individual way. The most touching track however obviously is the first entry by Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men & Aaliyah herself which still holds the record for the longest run on #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 charts with 16 consecutive weeks. I'd like to take the opportunity and dedicate this song to my friend André Porzel who untimely passed away in March 2010.
We, the people who created these songs in memory of the late Aaliyah for the 10th anniversary of her passing hope you will enjoy this album.
- S.I.R."
No worries there,S.I.R., after thoroughly playing this collection I can safely assure fans of either AAliyah, mashups,or both, you'll enjoy this collection. Most tracks are mixed by S.I.R. himself (which makes sense, who else is better suited for this style?) with a good batch by guest mixers like DJ Rick Lee, Athom, & Xtreme. If you frequent mashups on Youtube, you'll be familiar with S.I.R.'s enormously popular bootleg videos of his mixes.Join in the fun

02 - Hahnstudios has been making great long mixes for a few years now, & has slowly been branching out to making great mashups. Recently, in his own words, he
"Took some cheesy German pop songs and placed a number of different German vocal over them. The result: 'Die Mashup Schlager Party' ".
The twelve tracks on this collection all thrilled me to no end. Frankly, I would've made this album if I could've. It's corny, kitchy,& catchy as all get out. Despite the genre clash performed throughout, it plays like some great lost label release. Perhaps if you know German artists like Juliane Werding, Tony Holiday, Culcha Candela, Rammstein, & Jan Delay, you'd realize the bootleg nature of these tunes, but even if you did, you'd be delighted by the way Hahnstudios plays them off each other. For a fun play with plenty of melodic grab obtain your copy

03 - Now for one AWESOME bootleg collection. Allow me to copy & paste the words of mixer Black Sand.
"Depeche Mode: Elementals is a massive 4 disc, 40 track compilation featuring brand new fan made remixes based on tracks from the 30 year back catalogue of Depeche Mode.
Bringing together some fantastic talent this is intended as a companion piece to the officially released album from Mute, which I'd highly recommend you seek out and purchase.
This album is done for the love of it. There is no financial incentive to this and if anybody tries to sell it they will be going against the very spirit of how it was conceived. Music BY the Masses FOR the Masses."
In all honesty, I'm only through listening to the first 3 discs, but holy moocow, is this ever a splendid collection. There's like 40 different mixers on this sucker, & there's even an extended play 5th disc with more that missed the initial deadline.
Head over quickly & download it for a listen, you never know how long bootleg links last.

04 - For a strong mainstream mashup experience, check out DJ Darkz' 'Mashups,Vol.1'. It collects all the tracks he's made so far. Judging from the reactions of people I've seen comment in posts to the individual tracks, I think we can safely assume this is one pleasing assortment. The artists employed all maintain a mainstream presence, making this a most accessible collection. If well-known label artists like Flo Rida, Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Usher, J Lo, LMFAO,, AC/DC & Black Eyed Peas appeal to you, you'll savor the contrasts DJ Darkz places them in.

05 - Last, but not least is the longest-running mashup series ever! DJ Morgoth has again assembled a finestkind collection for '
Mash-Up Your Bootz Party Sampler Vol. 51: The new Bastard Pop Party Sampler'
( www.mashupyourbootz.com/ ) . There's sixteen of the best of recent mashups. The mixers featured are among the best, too, with dj's like DJ's From Mars, DJ Topcat, GHP, & Mashup-Germany. I advise pursuing all 51 volumes. It'll put a permanent smile on your puss.

That ought to hold you till next week when I have a feature article on DJ Maez from Germany. I hope you enjoy them as much or more than I did.
Mix Of The Week
Italian-Belgian producer Aeroplane's 'August 2011 Promo Mix' is one fine party-starter of a mix. From Cassius to Joe Goddard to The Opiates, this set maintains excellent tunage with powerfuul sound & passage.
Aeroplane actually has a debut album available for sale, so you will want that too, no doubt.

Mashup Tip : Make a Rick Perry mashup now before he's out of the presidential race.
Latest Useo Thing
I took one of my all-time favorite albums, Frank Zappa's 'One Size Fits All'& remixed the entire collection down to 12 minutes. At first I expected it only to appeal to other Zappa fans, but a major Zappa-hater heard it & loved it! I am still surprised. This remix is an exclusive to BARTCOP ENTERTAINMENT. Hear it

Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy is hosting the Oscars.
The actor and comedian will host the 84th annual Academy Awards, producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer said Tuesday.
Ratner called the 50-year-old entertainer "a comedic genius; one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever."
"With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances - especially on stage - I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February," Ratner said.

Sets Final Day
Regis Philbin
Television talk show host Regis Philbin on Tuesday announced the final day, November 18, for taping his "Live! with Regis and Kelly," ending his run on the popular program after nearly 28 years.
Philbin, who turned 80 years-old on August 25, said in January that this current season would be his last on the program, and on Tuesday he finally put a hard date on the end.
"Friday, November 18 is my last day," he told viewers of the program. "But don't worry, the show goes on."
There was no word on who will replace the popular octogenarian, but Philbin joked that co-host Kelly Ripa "will be trying out new" men and seeking a "new young hot" one to sit by her side.

Raises More Than $1M For Minot
Benefit Concert
Preliminary figures show a concert featuring The Black Eyed Peas as the headliner raised at least $1.3 million to help with flood recovery efforts in the North Dakota town of Minot.
Minot Area Community Foundation president Ken Kitzman said in a news release that Saturday night's initial count of 15,800 people in attendance at the benefit concert breaks a previous record set for a KISS concert in 2010.
Kitzman said concert officials are still adding up donations, but at least $1.3 million has been raised so far.
Hollywood actor and Minot native Josh Duhamel spoke at the concert, which also featured Minneapolis-based rockers Charlz Newman. Duhamel is married to Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie.

Son In Iran
Oliver Stone
The son of film director Oliver Stone -- who angered some Americans with a recent movie about anti-U.S. Latin American leaders -- is in Iran doing the groundwork for a documentary, Iranian media reported on Tuesday.
"Sean Stone has come to Iran and wants to prepare the ground for making a documentary," Mehrdad Hojjati, an Iranian film producer, was quoted as saying by the ILNA news agency.
Another news agency, Mehr, reported that Oliver Stone, whom it described as an "anti-American system" director, would join his son on September 26 to help out.
The reports did not say what the film would be about.

Former Executives Challenge Testimony
Rupert
Four former News International executives challenged statements made to Parliament by their bosses - Rupert and James Murdoch - with one saying Tuesday that the media mogul wrongly blamed outside lawyers for improperly investigating his company's phone hacking scandal.
Jonathan Chapman, the former director of legal affairs with News International, said the elder Murdoch made a mistake when he blamed the London law firm Harbottle & Lewis for failing to uncover the scope of the hacking scandal back in 2007. News International is the British arm of Murdoch's News Corp.
Chapman was one of four executives fielding questions Tuesday from Parliament's media committee about what they knew and when. All cast doubt on key aspects of the testimony given by Rupert Murdoch and his son James earlier this summer.
The hacking scandal has devastated the family's British newspaper arm, leading to the closure of the News of the World tabloid and the arrests of more than a dozen of its former journalists. On Tuesday, News International announced 110 job cuts across its surviving titles.
Revelations of systematic wrongdoing at the top-selling Sunday newspaper have also rocked British police and politicians, both of whom are accused of turning a blind eye to shady practices for fear of antagonizing the Murdochs' powerful media empire.

Edited Clip PO's Baggers
James Hoffa
A fiery speech delivered by James Hoffa at a Detroit Labor Day rally for President Obama sparked criticism from conservative critics who say Hoffa was inciting violence against the tea party. But it appears that a selectively edited version of Hoffa's speech, aired by media outlets including on Fox News and ABC on Monday, helped incite the fury.
During his speech before Obama's appearance, Hoffa called on Teamsters to vote the tea party out of office. "Everybody here has got a vote," Hoffa said. "If we go back and we keep the eye on the prize. Let's take these son-of-a-bitches out and give America back to America where we belong."
Hoffa likened union fights to a "war" and a "battle" between union workers and tea partiers, and described union supporters as Obama's "army."
But the clip that aired on Fox News and ABC omitted the call for a vote, taking Hoffa's "take these son-of-a-bitches out" out of context.

Mrs. Bachmann
Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann (R-Submissive)'s campaign manager, Ed Rollins (R-Geppetto), and his deputy are leaving their roles, Bachmann's campaign said on Monday, adding Rollins would remain in a less physically demanding senior advisory position.
Bachmann, a representative from Minnesota, moved into the top tier of candidates for the Republican presidential nomination last month with her win in the Iowa straw poll, an early test of strength in the 2012 race.
"I have great affection for her. I'll do anything I can to help her," Rollins, 68, a veteran of many political campaigns told CNN. "I just don't have the endurance to do 14-hour days, seven days a week anymore."
As part of a "restructuring strategy," current campaign strategist Keith Nahigian will assume the role of interim campaign manager, Bachmann said in her statement.

11th Circuit Rejects Appeal
Wesley Snipes
The federal appeals court in Atlanta on Tuesday turned away the latest attempt by actor Wesley Snipes to get his conviction and prison sentence on tax charges overturned.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the appeal by Snipes, who was convicted in 2008 on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file income tax returns.
His defense lawyers contended they received emails from former jurors reporting misconduct among other members of the panel. One of the former jurors said in the email that three other jurors acknowledged they had determined Snipes was guilty before the trial began.
A federal court rejected the request for a new trial and noted that there were reasons to question the veracity of the allegations made in the emails. The 11th Circuit upheld the ruling on Tuesday, finding that there wasn't "strong, substantial and incontrovertible evidence" that would warrant a new trial.

'Brat Pack' Actor Arrested
Anthony Michael Hall
Perhaps Anthony Michael Hall was attempting to re-assert his status as a member of the Brat Pack over Labor Day weekend.
The actor -- perhaps best known for such '80s John Hughes fare as "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" -- was arrested on suspicion of disturbing the peace and taken into custody Monday night, after allegedly engaging in a disturbance at his Playa del Rey, Calif., condominium complex, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The actor, 43, was arrested at approximately 9:50 p.m. after Los Angeles Police Department officers were called to the residence. Hall's neighbor told police that the actor had torn up plants in the common area of the condominium. When confronted, the neighbor claimed, Hall hurled an obscenity and threatened to beat the neighbor "to a pulp."
Hall was transported to the LAPD Pacific Division Jail, where he posted $500 bail and was released.

Journalist Not Allowed To Film Texas High School Football Game
Al Jazeera
Gabriel Elizondo, a Brazil-based correspondent for Al Jazeera, is in the middle of a road trip across the United States, talking to people about the effects of 9/11 on American life. In Texas, Elizondo says he just experienced part of the impact firsthand.
"Ten miles," he wrote Sunday in a blog post. "That's how deep I got into Texas before being asked to leave."
On Friday, Elizondo says, he decided to stop at a high school football game in Booker, Texas, near the Oklahoma border. "What better a setting to immerse one's self into Texas rural life than high school football," he wrote. "I easily imagine sitting in the bleachers, eating a hot dog (or three) and drinking a Coke, talking football (the American kind) with parents and maybe slipping in a little 9/11 if they allow me. It's a no brainer for me. I love this stuff. I'll take this over sitting in a White House press briefing any day of the week."
But after Elizondo introduced himself as a member of Al Jazeera to Booker High's principal, a warm Texas welcome apparently turned cold.
"I don't think anything can wipe that double-wide smile off Mrs. Yauck's face," he wrote. "But my Al Jazeera business card does the job pretty quick."

Founder Asks AOL To Sell Blog
TechCrunch
TechCrunch's founder and former editor Michael Arrington wants his company back.
In a post written on the site today, Arrington says that AOL faces two options (as dictated by him): give the site its editorial independence back, or sell the shares it bought a year ago back to the original shareholders.
This is the latest in a string of stories penned by writers and editors for the powerful technology blog intended to fight back against their critics and correct the supposed fallacies being reported about the company.
Both Arrington and AOL have been under intense scrutiny since last Thursday, when Arrington announced he was launching a $20 million venture capital fund that would invest in companies his newsroom reports on.
The fund's biggest backer is none other than AOL, which reportedly plunged $10 million into the venture.

'Most Wanted' To Lifetime
John Walsh
"America's Most Wanted" is resuming its decades-long run on a new network, Lifetime, host John Walsh and the network said Tuesday.
The deal will restore to the air Walsh's weekly criminal roundup, which since 1988 has helped bring almost 1,200 fugitives to justice.
The series will return for its 25th season later this year.
In May, Fox announced it was axing the series, citing high production costs, though the network said it would air four quarterly specials in the coming season. The first of those specials will air in October.
