William Kosh: 6 Insane (but Convincing) 'Game of Thrones' Fan Theories (Cracked)
Fans of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series have had to wait a very, very long time in between each installment, because writing 1,000-page fantasy books is time-consuming and Martin could give two honey-glazed ham-shits about the fans who are demanding he rush the job. So, devotees of the novels and the Game of Thrones TV series are forced to sit around for years, coming up with their own theories about what bizarre twists are still waiting to be unleashed on our fragile brains.
George Orwell 'mediocre'? Should we send Will Self to Room 101? (Guardian)
Self has called the revered author England's 'Supreme Mediocrity' for prescribing the use of short words and everyday English. Could Self have a new book out, by any chance?
Andrew Johnson: "Will Self: 'I like Orwell's writing as much as the next talented mediocrity'" (Independent)
In what is perhaps the first literary spat between a living and dead author, Will Self has infuriated the followers of George Orwell by describing the writer of the political classics Animal Farm and 1984 as a "supreme mediocrity".

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
So, last month I got an email from paypal about adding a new bank account. The letter didn't read quite right, so on paypal's FAQ page they said to send them anything suspicious.
A day later I got 2 emails from them - one from a tech, and another 'official' one stating that the mail I forwarded was indeed bogus, and an example of phishing.
Got another version of the 1st email about 10 days later, and once again, I forwarded it, and got the same 2-letter response.
Sunday I got another email from paypal saying they suspected some funny business and to check into my account.
When I tried to log in, I was locked out.
It was late, decided to try Monday, but paypal was closed for the holiday.
This morning I was still locked out, and their website was about as useful as a pimple on my ass, so had to resort to the phone.
Well, it seems the original email, the one that I had forwarded, wasn't bogus. And neither was the 2nd one.
And somehow a nefarious bastard was able to add his bank account to my paypal account and drain it.
The paypal agent restored the 'lost' money and my account is 'mine' again, but, jeez.
Kinda wonder why they called their own emails bogus, twice.

Wall Street
Former US House majority leader Eric Cantor (R-Gonif) is going to work on Wall Street, his new employer said Tuesday.
The Republican Cantor, 51, will be vice chairman and managing director at Moelis & Company, a boutique investment bank. He will also be elected to its board of directors, the bank said in a statement.
Cantor, an establishment heavyweight, shocked the US political world back in June when he lost to a more conservative but virtually unknown Tea Party-backed challenger, Dave Brat, in a primary election in the state of Virginia.
Cantor resigned his congressional seat on August 18 but quickly found his feet with the high-paying Wall Street position, a role in which his vast connections and knowledge of the workings of Capitol Hill could be a boon to clients as they navigate Washington.

Buys Two Ex-Senators
Gazprombank
Gazprombank, Russia's third largest bank and the target of Western sanctions, has hired two former U.S. senators to lobby on its behalf in Washington, according to a disclosure form.
Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Cha-Ching) and former Senator John Breaux (D-Cha-Ching) were listed as lobbyists for a subsidiary of the bank, according to a filing in the Senate last week by Squire Patton Boggs, a law and lobbying firm.
The disclosure form said Lott and Breaux would focus their efforts on banking laws and regulations, "including applicable sanctions." The disclosure was first reported by the watchdog group Center for Public Integrity.
Lott, a Republican from Mississippi, spent 34 years in Congress before retiring in 2007. Lott and Breaux, a Democrat from Louisiana, founded their own lobbying firm, Breaux Lott Leadership Group, which Patton Boggs acquired in 2010.

Lighthouse Sells For $78,000
Maine
New England's tallest lighthouse has been sold for $78,000.
A federal government spokeswoman says the General Services Administration has accepted a bid for the Boon Island Light Station off York, Maine. The winning bidder is Portland, Maine, resident Art Girard.
The Administration closed out an auction of the 133-foot-tall lighthouse tower on Aug. 17. More than a dozen bidders vied for it. The government had to approve Girard's bid, which was the highest of the bunch.
The lighthouse was built in 1855 and is located on a tiny rocky island 6 miles off the Maine coast. It's still active as a navigational aid.

Lost A Humvee?
Police
One freezing day last December in the tiny town of Palestine, Ark., a young man climbed into the police department's Humvee, turned it on, and drove off on a joy ride.
"It never crossed my mind" that anyone would do that, Palestine Police Chief Stanley Barnes said Wednesday of the incident. The Humvee, which the town of fewer than 700 people got for free through a controversial Pentagon program that gives old military equipment to local police departments, doesn't have keys. But it's easy to look up how to start one.
The possibility that the 5,000-pound Humvee might be stolen was so far from Barnes' mind that it took a week before anyone on the small force noticed it was missing from the police station's parking lot.
A hunter reported seeing the vehicle, which was emblazoned with the police department's logo, in the woods a county over. The thief had driven into a tree and completely wrecked it. Barnes sent a truck over to pick up the Humvee and tow it back to the station.
As odd as it may seem that a hulking armored personnel carrier could go missing from a police department, it's not that uncommon an occurrence.

Chump Change Gulf Oil Spill Settlement
Halliburton
Halliburton agreed to pay $1.1 billion to settle what it calls "a substantial portion" of plaintiff claims arising from the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The settlement, if approved by a federal court, would allow businesses and property owners who were hurt by the oil spill to collect punitive damages from Halliburton through a fund to be administered by a court-appointed representative. These plaintiffs will receive or have already received compensation for their economic loss through a separate settlement with BP.
Halliburton and the plaintiffs had been waiting on the court to decide to what extent Halliburton was responsible for the blowout of the Macondo well and the subsequent explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Halliburton was BP PLC's cement contractor on the project. The accident killed 11 workers and led to the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.
The deal is contingent upon a minimum number of plaintiffs signing on. If a federal judge decides that gross negligence on the part of Halliburton was a major factor in the accident, plaintiffs could decide instead to hold out for a larger award. Halliburton would likely then challenge that ruling, leading to further delays in payments of punitive damages.

British Police Apologise
Cliff Richard
British police apologised to veteran singer Cliff Richard on Tuesday over the handling of a search of his property during an investigation into a sex crime allegation.
The BBC filmed the search by helicopter after police informed them in advance when it was due to take place.
The coverage sparked widespread criticism that it had violated the privacy of the 73-year-old star and damaged his reputation before he was charged with a crime.
The police denied they had sought to generate publicity for their investigation, saying they believed the broadcaster had been leaked detailed information and would publish it unless they cooperated, impeding their investigation.

Charged With Assault
Biebs
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber faces new charges after he was arrested for dangerous driving and assault following a collision between a minivan and an ATV that led to a physical altercation involving a photographer, his lawyer said Tuesday.
Ontario Provincial Police would only say the driver of the ATV and an occupant of the minivan "engaged in a physical altercation," Friday afternoon near Bieber's hometown of Stratford.
Bieber, 20, went to a police station and was arrested, then released on a promise to appear in court Sept. 29, a police spokesman said.
Constable Kees Wijnands would not say whether Bieber was driving the ATV, but Bieber was photographed recently riding on an ATV vehicle with on-and-off again girlfriend actress and singer Selena Gomez.

Pleads Guilty
Chris Brown
Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Tuesday to punching a man in the face outside a Washington hotel, an assault that occurred while the singer was on probation for attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna.
Brown pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to time served. He spent two days in a District of Columbia jail in the case, one that further tarnished the image of the Grammy-winning singer.
Brown, 25, admitted that he hit a man who tried to get in a picture the singer was taking with two women outside the W hotel a few blocks from the White House last October. The victim, Parker Adams, suffered a broken nose.
At the time of the arrest, Brown was on probation in a felony assault case for attacking pop star Rihanna hours before the 2009 Grammy awards. The arrest led a judge in California to revoke his probation, and he was ordered in May to serve an additional 131 days in jail. He was released in June.

Land Grab
Israel
Finance Minister Yair Lapid warned Tuesday that Israel was eroding its international support, as criticism abroad mounted of its biggest grab of Palestinian land since the 1980s.
Lapid complained the security cabinet had not been consulted about Sunday's announcement of the confiscation of 400 hectares (988 acres) of land in the occupied West Bank to pave the way for further settlement building.
"The announcement, which wasn't brought to the security cabinet, regarding 900 acres of land for building in Gush Etzion (between Jerusalem and Hebron) harms the State of Israel," Lapid told an economic conference in Tel Aviv.
"Maintaining the support of the world was already challenging, so why was it so urgent to create another crisis with the United States and the world?" he asked.
Lapid, a centrist within the governing coalition, was alluding to widespread international condemnation of the high Palestinian civilian death toll during Israel's 50-day war in Gaza.

Found In U.S.
'Fake' Cellphone Towers
Seventeen mysterious cellphone towers have been found in America which look like ordinary towers, and can only be identified by a heavily customized handset built for Android security - but have a much more malicious purpose, according to Popular Science.
The fake 'towers' - computers which wirelessly attack cellphones via the "baseband" chips built to allow them to communicate with their networks, can eavesdrop and even install spyware, ESD claims. They are a known technology - but the surprise is that they are in active use.
The towers were found by users of the CryptoPhone 500, one of several ultra-secure handsets that have come to market in the last couple of years, after an executive noticed his handset was "leaking" data regularly.
The leaks were traced to the mysterious towers. Despite having some of the functions of normal cellphone towers, Goldsmith says their function is rather different. He describes them as "interceptors" and says that various models can eavesdrop and even push spyware to devices. Normal cellphones cannot detect them - only specialized hardware such as ESD's Android security handsets.
"Interceptor use in the U.S. is much higher than people had anticipated," Goldsmith says. "One of our customers took a road trip from Florida to North Carolina and he found eight different interceptors on that trip. We even found one at South Point Casino in Las Vegas."

Radioactive Wild Boar
Germany
If you've going to Germany to experience Oktoberfest for beer and sausages this fall, chances are you might want to stay away from the boar while you're there. A new study from the German government, reported by The Telegraph, shows that more than one in three wild boar killed by hunters in the region are too radioactive to be safe for humans to eat.
Since 2012, hunters in the Saxony region of Germany have had to get any wild boar they kill tested for radiation. In one year, the state reports that 297 of 752 boar tested contained more than the safe limit of 600 becquerels of radioactive material caesium-137 per kilogram for human consumption. Some boar tested had radiation levels dozens of times higher than the safe limit.
Saxony is 700 miles from Chernobyl, where a 1986 explosion at a nuclear plant sent radioactive material into the atmosphere. Subsequent rain and wind carried the radioactive material far and wide across Europe.
It's thought that boar are more susceptible to radiation contamination because their diet consists of mushrooms and truffles that are buried in the ground and hold radiation longer than other vegetation. As a result of the contaminated meat, the German government has paid out thousands of euros in compensation to hunters, which have to destroy anything that tests as unsafe and cannot sell it for profit.
