Andrew Tobias: I Don't Get It (andrewtobias.com)

Scott Burns: Examining the Health Care Elephant (assetbuilder.com)
The health care discussion, if it can be called that, is the closest thing I've seen to public hysteria in years. It is a coupling of pure emotion with a remarkable lack of knowledge about medical care in America. The knowledge deficiency...
"Wonderful World" by Javier Calvo: A review by Brian Evenson
Javier Calvo's 'Wonderful World' -- his fourth book published in his native Spain, but his first to be translated into English -- plows through all sorts of genre lines. This lush, complex novel is part-thriller, part-comic book (without pictures), part-horror story, part-postmodern mash-up.
CYRUS FARD: Everything Is for Sale (popmatters.com)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer's lasting success tells us that demographic targeting is a complex process that requires both fan participation and forms of merchandising that literally allow everything to be for sale.
David Bruce: Wise Up! Death (athensnews.com)
* Rabbi Daniel Smith witnessed two deaths that were very different from each other. He was called out in the middle of the night to see a dying woman, who told him, "Rabbi, they tell me I am dying, and I want you to make sure that my daughter does not get my mink coat." The woman also told him about her other valuables, including jewelry, and she told him that she did not want her daughter to get those, either. ...

Soupy Sales (born Milton Supman on January 8, 1926) is an American comedian and actor.
Sales got his unusual nickname from his family. His older brothers had been nicknamed "Hambone" and "Chicken Bone"; Milton was dubbed "Soup Bone," which was later shortened to "Soupy." When he became a disc jockey, he began using the stage name "Soupy Hines." After he became established, it was decided that "Hines" was too close to the Heinz soup company, so Soupy chose the surname "Sales," after comedian Chic Sale.

My parents hated him
Soupy Sales of
"White Fang, how come every time I say F, you see K?" fame.
"My girl friend can't cook, but, boy, can she make a banana cream."
"I took my girl to a baseball game. I kissed her between the strikes and she kissed me between the balls."
and
"Kids, go into your dad's pocket and send me one of the pieces of dirty green paper." fame. I think all of those sent him to the wood shed at one time or another.

Comic, Soupy Sales was born with the handle, Milton Supman. Who of us of, that certain age, could forget Sales' receiving a pie or two in the face, EVERYDAY until it became his trademark! If you were a slapstick fan, Soupy was your guy... The Soupy Sales Show," peaked in popularity during my college years. We (the intellectually elite) considered any student devotee of Sales with utter contempt in those days. Then, in 1964, after he had been dropped by national networks, and found a home on our local station, WNEW (channel 5) he became so good that his new show became syndicated - suddenly he became the campus hero! I do remember that Sales pulled many "stunts" though-out the years, and somewhere along the line incurred the wrath of Don Imus - whom I myself despise. Thereafter, I decided that Soupy must have been doing something right all along!!
PS: Yes, B2BB, you are irking me by delaying the Poll for an entire week - you KNOW how much I love your polls - though I do toss you a bitch or two now and again...
PPS: The 'Wildfire' is a 'personal' unknown to me, even in the 33 years I lived in the outskirts of Denver, CO. Yes, we had fires, but they were confined in the hinterlands. But now that my son and a dear friend are living in the San Francisco area of CA, and another dear friend in San Diego (plus you, Marty) I watch the fires from a whole new perspective. Add to this our friend, Barbara (the fish Lady) bravely battling for her very home, I am wondering if this is a new phenomenon raising its ugly head only after Bush sent the airplanes that sprayed water to control these fires over the Iraq? I've read of such dangerous and vicious fires all over the southwestern state these past few years - as I've said, I can't imagine how terrifying for folks like Barbara who may lose everything. God bless her little heart... We are standing with you Barbara!!

Baron Dave's Mini Response to Purple Gene's Mini Review
Disagreeing With Baron Dave's Review of Taking Woodstock
Purple Gene and I have different takes on Taking Woodstock. I
don't expect everyone to agree with
me (that would make the world too simple), but we're usually in
similar grooves and it's rare when we're far apart. So... a little
forensic examination is in order.
Ah, but Taking Woodstock isn't about the performances any
more than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is about jungle
animals. To get his head into the proper space, Purple Gene should
see a different range of movies. To get a small feel of the Catskill
resort area and how the younger generation likes music and sex
despite the stogy older generation, tune in Dirty Dancing and Footloose. To
prepare for a Jewish coming of age story, turn on The Apprenticeship of
Duddy Kravitz or You're A Big Boy Now.
To wallow in sphincter conservatives' reaction to city fo'k, drop out
Deliverance;
Georgia crackers are more into butt sex than New York rednecks, but
you'll get the idea. It probably couldn't hurt to fill in some
background and see Hester Street and Shindler's List or
see how events are larger than the concert with A Hard Day's
Night.
Director Ang Lee pays homage to many movies, including
Woodstock, but Taking Woodstock is an historical set
piece about people being caught up in events larger than themselves.
Not, alas, about the music.

I have it on excellent authority that most of the local radio & TV stations with antennas at the farm on top of
Mt. Wilson have cobbled together backup transmitters on other mountain tops.
That means the stations are still on the air, but with reduced coverage.
Not that anyone in the media is mentioning it, but, jeez, that's some remarkable engineering.
Guess that's why they earn the big bucks. LOL

It's enough to provoke a string of expletives from any devout George Carlin admirer: The comedian never won an Emmy Award in his lifetime despite a half-dozen nominations.
TV academy voters have the chance to make indirect amends, and gladden his daughter's heart, by honoring "George Carlin: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize."
"My father was someone who did change the face of television with his HBO specials," Kelly Carlin McCall said. "He was a man who, over almost 20 years, made television exciting to watch. I think it's too bad they didn't get to honor him that way."
Carlin, a multiple Grammy-winner for his comedy albums, shook up television with 14 standup specials that skewered hypocrisy in language and social mores. He was 71 when he died, his razor-sharp satire unblunted.
Producers of the Carlin special have campaigned in trade publication ads, including one that read, "7 words George Carlin never got to say on television: `Thank you all for this wonderful Emmy.'"

A hoax video purportedly showing Michael Jackson emerging from a coroner's van was an experiment aimed at showing how quickly misinformation and conspiracy theories can race across the Internet, German broadcaster RTL said Tuesday.
The video was posted by RTL on YouTube for a single day a week ago and received 880,000 hits. The broadcaster has since removed the video from YouTube, but it has been picked up by other Web sites around the world.
"We wanted to show how easily users can be manipulated on the Internet with hoax videos," spokeswoman Heike Schultz of Cologne-based RTL told The Associated Press. "Therefore, we created this video of Michael Jackson being alive, even though everybody knows by now that he is dead - and the response was breathtaking."
The video - posted under an "anonymous source" - shows a coroner's van entering what seems like a parking garage and the King of Pop getting out of the back with another person. The lighting is bad, the sound muffled and the footage appears amateurish.
Oscar overseers are adopting a preferential-voting system in which academy members rank their best-picture favorites from 1 to 10.
The change was made because of the academy's decision to expand the best-picture field from five nominees to 10 starting with the awards next March.
Under the old system with five nominees, voters simply chose one film, making the winner the one that received the most votes. The new method adds weight to voters' No. 2 and 3 picks.
If the academy had maintained the old system, the best-picture prize conceivably could have gone to a film with barely 10 percent of the vote.

Oprah Winfrey is bringing her show to the streets of downtown Chicago next week.
A Harpo Productions spokeswoman said Tuesday that Winfrey is celebrating the kickoff of the 24th season of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" by taping the show on a stretch of Chicago's Michigan Avenue.
Part of the street, which is known as the Magnificent Mile, will be shut down from early Monday until early Wednesday, Sept. 9. The taping is on Tuesday and will feature a performance by the Black Eyed Peas. Admission is free and open to the public.
When American actor and director Sam Wanamaker moved to Britain in the 1950s after learning he was blacklisted after the McCarthy hearings in the U.S., he was paranoid about drawing the attention of the authorities.
Documents released by the National Archives on Tuesday show he was right to be wary. Britain's security services and the U.S. Embassy in London kept a close eye on Wanamaker when he arrived with his family in Britain in 1952. They even noted in his file that he should be placed in an internment camp in the event of a national emergency, while his wife, Charlotte, would have restrictions placed on her movements.
Authorities feared that Wanamaker would use his contacts with left-wing theater groups to the advantage of the Communist Party. Wanamaker had briefly belonged to the party in the United States.
In 1957 Britain's Home Office removed all restrictions on Wanamaker's employment, granted him and his family permission to remain in Britain and lost interest in him as a possible security threat.
The owner of the Orange County Register in California and dozens of other newspapers became the latest publisher Tuesday to seek bankruptcy protection, driven into financial despair by a staggering drop in advertising revenue.
The filing was part of a prepackaged plan approved by a majority of Freedom's lenders. The consensus on the proposed restructuring should minimize that haggling that can bog down bankruptcy proceedings.
"Reaching this agreement with our lenders provides us with an orderly process to realign our balance sheet with the realities of today's media environment," said Burl Osborne, a newspaper industry veteran who became Freedom's chief executive two months ago.
In a Chapter 11 petition made Tuesday in Wilmington, Del., Freedom Communications Inc. listed debts of more than $1 billion and assets of $500 million to $1 billion. Freedom's debt includes $770 million owed to a group of banks led by JPMorgan Chase & Co.
