M Is FOR MASHUP - August 17th, 2011
August Mashup Review
By DJ Useo
After a very noticeable slump during the last many hot weeks, mashup posting & commenting is picking up again. It's regained that frantic pace that overwhelms any attempts to keep current with everything. There's simply more available than an individual can assess. Still, the many mixes I find are totally satisfying. It takes some great mashups to pry me away from the mixing program myself. For instance the
Sound-Unsound mashup forum
( www.soundunsound.com/ ) is starting a SURF MUSIC MASHUP project & I've finally finished a super track after 14 re-dos. It's so tight now it could hold water. I'm so happy with it, I'm inspired to do another. Mashups & mixing can be very engrossing.
Just to give you an idea of some of the excellent mashup material that's new, let's take a quick gander at some fresh posts.
01 - 'DJ ZEBRA Best Bootlegs of 2004-2005' collection is the best mashups you can hear. The master of mashing did all these gems back in the initial surge of mashup popularity. All are time-tested & audience-approved. From 'COME CLOSER' (The Beatles vs. Nine Inch Nails) to 'SLASH 69' (The Stooges vs. Fatboy Slim) to 'JERK THE CASBAH' (Rachid Taha vs. The Caesars) you will find only the best bootleg mixes available.
DJ Zebra mixes with great sound, appeal, & inventiveness. As if that isn't enough, he has new videos made for the best of them. Go get them NOOOOW!

02 - Oki "finally managed to finish this, a couple old mashups on it but mostly new. all prince vs. , except one vanity 6 tune, which was made by prince as well." Many thanks to him, I say. There's all wonderful mixes on this collection, all hand mixed by Oki himself. (I understand he fired his 40 assistants ;) ) Whether you like Prince or not, you'll enjoy Oki's 'PurpleMash' album. Again, as with Zebra's collection, Oki has offered super-cool videos to accompany the musical pleasure.

03 - The Reborn Identity has an awesome new mashup album out called '
Dark Matter - An emotional mashup compilation'. RB sez "it's been a long time since my last 'best of', so a new restrospective of the last few years is well overdue. Rather than pick out a little bit of everything, for this one I've focused on my moody, introspective tracks, which also happen to be some of my favourites...". These will easily be your favorites, too. There's Radiohead vs Morcheeba, Pat Benatar vs Patrick Wolf, Editors vs The Who & more that you'll never forget. The Reborn Identity has many videos also!

His sequel, 'The Magician King,' catches up with our wizard prodigies, now ruling as the kings and queens of Fillory, their reward for rescuing it. The novel begins in ways that parallel 'The Magicians': Cue Quentin, still unhappy, but now King Quentin of Fillory, what his teen self had dreamed of being. But instead of reigning as a proper and attentive royal, he's getting fat from his life of magical leisure. His friends King Eliot, Queen Julia and Queen Janet aren't doing much better.

'The Help'
A lawsuit against Kathryn Stockett, author of the best-selling novel "The Help," has been rejected by a Mississippi judge.
"The Help" was made into a movie that opened last week. It's based on relationships between white families in Mississippi and the African-American women who worked for them in the 1960s.
The lawsuit was filed by Ablene Cooper, a black woman who works for Stockett's brother. She claims a main character, Aibileen, is based on her. Cooper alleged Stockett used her name and likeness without permission.
Circuit Judge Tommie Green ruled Tuesday that a one-year statute of limitations had run out between the time Stockett gave Cooper a copy of the book and the time the lawsuit was filed in February. The lawsuit sought $75,000 in damages.

Getting Hollywood Star
Ed O'Neill
"Modern Family" star Ed O'Neill tells his hometown newspaper that he's getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
O'Neill tells the Youngstown, Ohio, newspaper The Vindicator that he'll be honored Aug. 30. Induction speeches will be given by Sofia Vergara, who plays his wife on the ABC hit, and Katey Sagal, who played his wife on Fox's "Married With Children" in the 1980s and '90s.
The 65-year-old O'Neill says he almost turned down the star. He says, "It's bizarre - names on a sidewalk. People can spit on it," but his 11-year-old daughter persuaded him to accept.
He says that, after the initial shock, he realizes the honor is "something to be proud of."

Found In Encino Church
Rembrandt
A valuable Rembrandt stolen from a Los Angeles-area hotel has been recovered at a church in nearby Encino, authorities told Reuters on Tuesday.
Owners of the drawing, known as "The Judgment," verified just after midnight that the recovered 11 X 16 inch pen-and-ink artwork was indeed the original that had vanished from an exhibit on Saturday night, said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Police Department.
An anonymous tip led investigators to the church around 7 p.m. on Monday. Experts from the Linearis Institute, which owns the drawing, later verified its authenticity, he said.
There are no suspects in custody, and authorities are not commenting on how the drawing -- valued at $250,000 -- ended up at the church on Ventura Boulevard in the city about 25 miles from Los Angeles. They also are not confirming the name of the church.

Enters Partnership
KCET
KCET, the former PBS station serving Southern and Central California, has entered a partnership with Eyetronics Media and Studios to produce and acquire new series, the companies announced Tuesday. Under the agreement, Eyetronics will provide up to $50 million in funding for the new programs, which will start production in the fall.
Ever since KCET ended its 40-year relationship with PBS last October, there was some question as to how it would fill its programing slate without hallmark shows like "Sesame Street" and "Charlie Rose."
This deal erases many of those doubts about funding.
The initial group of non-fiction series will explore topics "relevant and resonant" to Southern California like the entertainment community, art community, local history and multiculturalism, said Al Jerome, KCET's President and CEO. He added that KCET will retain complete editorial control.

Postal Stamps Honor
Hollywood Directors
Legendary Hollywood film director John Huston is being honored with a postage stamp.
The U.S. Postal Service says the stamp honoring the Oscar-winning director of 1948's "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" will be issued next year.
The art on the stamp is inspired by the 1941 movie "The Maltese Falcon." It depicts Humphrey Bogart holding the statue of the falcon.
The stamp is part of a four-stamp Great Film Directors series. The Postal Service announced earlier this month that John Ford and Frank Capra are other directors depicted in the series. The remaining director and the date of issue will be announced later.

Denies Black Sabbath Reunion Report
Tony Iommi
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi on Tuesday denied a report that the veteran British rock band was getting back together in its four man original line-up.
British paper The Birmingham Mail had reported that Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward had begun rehearsing for a tour and a new studio album for release next year.
It quoted Iommi, 63, as saying the original foursome, which dates back to 1969, was looking forward to performing together again.
But in a statement on his official website on Tuesday, Iommi said he was just speculating and described the report as "absolute nonsense."

Seps Into Dodgers Chapter 11
Sinatra Estate
The estate of Frank Sinatra, a long-time Los Angeles Dodgers fan, has joined four other season ticket holders to ask a bankruptcy judge for an official say in the baseball team's future.
Nancy, Frank Jr. and Tina Sinatra and the other ticket holders are seeking recognition as an official committee to advocate on behalf of Dodger fans who generally blame team owner Frank McCourt for its financial problems.
They did not specify their concerns or motives in a filing with the Delaware bankruptcy court. But an official committee would speak on behalf of all season ticket holders, and would have some or all of its expenses for lawyers and advisers paid by the Dodgers.
The family of the singer known for such standards as "My Way" and "New York, New York" and for acting in films such as "From Here to Eternity" has held season tickets since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles from Brooklyn, New York for the 1958 season, according to court documents.

More Bad News
Rupert
A letter released Tuesday by the British parliamentary committee that is probing allegations of past criminal behavior by journalists at News International, the British arm of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, suggests that executives within the company knew more about the phone-hacking at the now-defunct tabloid News of the World than they've let on, and may have organized a cover-up.
The letter, dated March 2, 2007, was written by Clive Goodman, the former royal correspondent at News of the World, who spent time in jail for his role in tapping into the voicemail of news subjects. Goodman, portraying himself as a scapegoat, wrote the letter to appeal the termination of his employment.
Goodman also claims the phone-hacking was "widely discussed in the daily editorial conference, until explicit reference to it was banned by the editor."
The editor of News of the World at the time was Andy Coulson, who went on to become the press secretary to Prime Minister David Cameron, and resigned earlier this year. He was arrested in July, along with the former News International chief Rebekah Brooks, in connection with the phone-hacking allegations.
Current and former top News Corp. executives have insisted that the phone-hacking at News of the World was confined to a few rogue actors, and that company bigwigs were unaware it was going on. News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and his son, James, testified to this effect when they were called before Parliament last month. Coulson has likewise denied any wrong-doing, or knowledge thereof.
You can read the full letter at The Guardian, as well as a timeline of News Corp's denials that phone hacking was widespread

Faces Foreclosure In Florida
Burt Reynolds
Veteran actor Burt Reynolds is facing foreclosure on his longtime southeast Florida home, according to a lawsuit filed by a mortgage firm.
The 75-year-old is known for starring roles including in films "Deliverance" and "Smokey and the Bandit" from the 1970s. He also won a Golden Globe for his role as a porn king in the 1997 film "Boogie Nights".
The mortgage on the house in Hobe Sound that is facing foreclosure was taken out in 1994, a year after Reynolds' widely publicized divorce from actress Loni Anderson.
Reynolds, who had heart bypass surgery last year, stopped making the mortgage payments a year ago and owes Merrill Lynch Credit Corporation almost $1.2 million, according to the lawsuit filed August 9 in Martin County.
A local newspaper reported in 2009 that Reynolds placed the 12,500 square foot, waterfront house, which he called Valhalla, on the market for $8.9 million.

Disinvited From Jackson Concert
Kiss
Organizers of a Michael Jackson tribute concert dropped Kiss from the lineup after receiving widespread criticism for booking the band despite critical comments toward the late pop singer by bassist Gene Simmons.
The announcement Tuesday came a day after Global Live Events announced Kiss would join the show planned for Oct. 8 in Cardiff, Wales. Fans, media and the singer's estate quickly noted that Simmons has said in recent years that he was convinced Jackson molested children. Some of the critical comments came within days of Jackson's June 2009 death.
Some of Simmons' harshest comments came last year in an interview with Classic Rock magazine. "Well, you know, where there's smoke there's fire," Simmons said regarding accusations that Jackson abused young boys. "There's no question in my mind he molested those kids. Not a doubt."
Global Events Live CEO Chris Hunt accepted blame, calling Kiss' booking an "oversight."

Proposed Ordinance
LA Campaign
Los Angeles voters could cast ballots deciding whether porn producers have to require use of condoms on shoots as a condition of getting a filming permit if a health advocacy group succeeds in a new ballot initiative.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein announced Tuesday that his group needs 41,138 valid city voter signatures in the next four months to get the issue on the June 2012 ballot.
"As a citizen of Los Angeles, I have a responsibility in my own hometown to make sure we limit the spread of disease, but also to ensure the safety of performers in this industry," said Weinstein, who says his group has hired a firm to gather the signatures.
The proposed ordinance would apply to commercial filming of adult films, and would call on the city to charge adult film producers a "fee sufficient to pay for periodic inspections" for enforcement.
The ballot box query is the latest move in the AIDS Healthcare Foundation's longstanding campaign to require safe sex in pornography.

Nazi Spy?
Coco Chanel
A new book about the life of Coco Chanel published in the United States on Tuesday aims to strengthen claims the French designer collaborated with the Nazis during World War II as a spy code-named "Westminster."
The book, "Sleeping With The Enemy: Coco Chanel's Secret War," by Paris-based American journalist Hal Vaughan, claims that not only was the designer the lover of a German officer, Hans Gunther von Dincklage, which has been well-documented, but they were spies who went on missions to Madrid and Berlin.
In addition, the book claims Chanel was deeply anti-Semitic.
"Vaughn reveals that Chanel was more than just a Nazi sympathizer and collaborator. She was a numbered Nazi agent working for Abwehr, Germany's military intelligence agency," publisher Alfred A. Knopf said in a statement.

Thanks Chicago PD For Finding Equipment
Portugal The Man
Members of the Oregon-based band Portugal The Man thanked Chicago police on Tuesday, offering to send them "a pile of doughnuts," after investigators recovered thousands of dollars worth of gear stolen from the band's van following an appearance at the Lollapalooza music festival.
A mechanic was accused of buying the items - including vintage guitars and amps, keyboards, effects pedals, drums and microphones - at a flea market in Chicago even though he knew they were stolen. Police said $80,000 worth of equipment was found in his home.
On the rock band's Facebook page, front man John Gourley wrote that band members were depressed over the theft when they got a call from their tour manager that the items had been found.
Juan Ocampo, 39, was charged with one count of felony theft and ordered held in jail in lieu of $10,000 bond after police found about $80,000 worth of the equipment Monday in his apartment, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said.

Russell Armstrong
The estranged husband of a star of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star has been found dead in his Los Angeles home, apparently from suicide.
Taylor Armstrong's husband, Russell Armstrong, 47, was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m. local time Monday in a home on Mulholland Drive, said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter. The death was caused by hanging and a suicide note hasn't been found, he said.
Bravo, home of the "Real Housewives" reality franchise, issued a statement Tuesday saying, "All of us at Bravo are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Armstrong family at this difficult time."
Russell Armstrong was an investment banker and venture capitalist. His relationship with his wife was a big part of the drama on the first season of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," which peeks into the privileged lives of six women living in the posh neighborhood. Armstrong appeared on many episodes, accompanying wife Taylor Armstrong to various events. She often discussed the couple's relationship troubles with the other women on the show, which premiered last year.
The second season is set to begin Sept. 5. In the opening episode, which was filmed months ago, Taylor Armstrong tells the other housewives that she and her husband are going to therapy. Later, she bursts into tears at a dinner party when one of the other women's husbands tells her that therapy is a sign of weakness. Taylor Armstrong is also shown shopping for lingerie to help spice up her marriage.
Court records show Taylor Armstrong filed for divorce on July 15 in Los Angeles. Russell Armstrong had not yet responded to her petition.
The couple's relationship troubles were set to be part of the show's second season, said fellow housewives Kyle Richards and Camille Grammer, whose own divorce from ex-husband and actor Kelsey Grammer also played out on the first season of show.
