I was mighty pleased to see Andrewherring had a new web site & a
collection of his most famous pieces available as a single
download. The compilation is called 'The Mysteriose Wurld O'
Andrewherring' & is a marvelous listen. I've enjoyed tracks like
his "Toxic Lion Tamer' (Britney vs Wire) & 'Ace Of Maroon' (Ace Of
Bass vs Maroon 5) for a couple years now, & loved getting them
alongside many unknown cuts as well. They are done up with lots of
D 'n B so as to please the modern tastes, yet enhancing the source
material. I remember trying to download his 'Matt Catt' tracks on
dial-up & having to start over constantly as the files kept coming
up short. Now, I got a large dose of his classics all at once in a
handy zip file. His work is exemplified by appealing pop merged
with stylish beats & delivered with creative success. No wonder
he's spent time crafting exclusive mashup tracks for MTV.
Ripping, innit?
In addition to his fine single tracks, Andrewherring teams up regularly
with DJ Lumpy & Juxtaposeur to release the splendid variety
podcast WOBCAST. Now up to it's 24th episode, Wobcast provides a
sounding board for one of the largest & most seasoned musical
aficionados I've ever experienced. In the latest show there were
cuts by the Avalanches, Scritti Politti & DaVinci's Notebook. You
really don't know what kind of great track you'll hear, but you
know it'll be cool. Doubling the coolability is a regular bonus
beats addition podcast with even more aural goodies. The 24th Bonus
beats goes from Yoji Biomehanika to Nerina Pallot to Manhattan
Transfer, a ride both dizzying, & satisfying.
Andrewherring, DJ Lumpy, & Juxtaposeur also perform club nights which
they organise, majoring in mash ups, tv themes, crazy covers and
various weird stuff as well as their old faves - a bit like the
wobcasts really. If you attend
Electric Kettle, you'll hear down-tempo / drum & Bass / psychedelic
fare that has thrilled live audiences in Bristol. Altho the group
is on indefinite hiatus at the moment, they will return shortly as
they did when the West Of Bastard shows ceased. Andrewherring
mentioned "We get together fairly regularly and play music we
like, in the strict order of Juxtaposeur/Lumpy/me and we never
ever play a track twice." This is the kind of life that appeals to
me. Crowd & self-satisfying, with a never-ending vigor.
Andrewherring generously agreed to answer some appropriate
inquiries.
01 - How do feel about the club owners &/or the audiences. Are they
providing you good stimulation as a performer?
"I think it's safe to say that all the venues we've done West of
Bastard and Eclectic Kettle in have had terrible owners/
management. We've found Bristol to be a hard place to get a decent
venue where everybody loves each other and that's soul destroying
and saps the enjoyment from promoting and deejaying. We've had
some great appreciative crowds in the last venue we frequented
though which went some way to making up for that - though we won't
be going back there..."
02-Do you have any advice for prospective bootleggers?
"Don't take initial indifference as rejection, there's 100's of folk
producing bootlegs every month, it's hard work to get feedback
when you're new. Try doing something different, nichey. I didn't
get any feedback at all on my first boots, and then some true but
hard comments on the next few, which to be honest were badly
produced. But i got some nice feedback from folk who thought the
ideas were at least good.
03-Can you relate a memorable tale of bootlegging?
Possibly my worst bootleg moment "evergreenything I do" was my only
track to be namechecked in the Guardian. Also getting a track
accepted for MTV mash only for them to cancel the programme.
04-Wot bootlegging plans do you foresee in the future?
I'm trying to mash Ronan Keating, Daniel Powter, Delta Goodrem and
Vanessa Carlton with some 180+bpm beats at the moment. And I've
just completed a Halloween sort of thing...
05-are you in favour of mashup compilations?
If they're a good genre or band that I like, why not?
06-What format do you think is best for audience delivery.Websites or
radio/clubs?
People are all different - for me website every time.
07-Have you performed abroad much?
No.
08-Do you sing or play any instrument?
Theramin? Double bass, sequencers...
09-The WOBCASTS are awesome. How does the process go for them?
We arrive at Pete's house at 8pm GMT and go down to his basement at
8.30pm (GMT). Pete always starts and plays 1 maybe 2 tunes. Then
Lumpy and then me. Then we repeat. We never play a tune twice.
Pete drinks Stella, Lumpy drinks cider or Pete's Stella, I drink
tea or Pete's Stella. We play about 80-90% CD's to vinyl. There's
always great excitement when Pete's actually been to a record
shop....

Jackson Williams: Karl Rove's "Permanent Republican Majority"
What is so telling about this field of Republican presidential candidates is that after eight years of having the White House, 12 years of having the House, and the Senate much of that time, the "bench" of the Republican Party is so thin, so poor in terms of seriousness, intellectual heft and ability to articulate a vision.
Tom Gregory: Oscar Time for Hattie McDaniel (huffingtonpost.com)
The recent reincarnation of Hairspray reminds us that America's segregated past is still part of our national dialog. Black Americans' stories of survival under those absurd laws are inspiring. Black heroes often went unsung, unnoticed and unrewarded. Today because of one African-American who excelled in her field, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is poised on the brink of a crisis of conscience.
David Bender: Joie de Merv (huffingtonpost.com)
It was during the run of his CBS show (1969-1972) that opposition to the Vietnam War reached its highest point. Merv continued to book controversial guests like Jane Fonda and Muhammad Ali, despite the network's constant pressure on him to remain "balanced." He received a memo that said, "In the past six weeks, thirty-four antiwar statements have been made on your show and only one pro-war statement, by John Wayne." Merv fired back immediately, "Find me someone as famous as John Wayne who supports the war and I'll book him."

Purple Gene's review of Country Songwriter, singer and superstar Jeffrey Steele live at the Bluebird Café in Nashville, Tennessee…..celebrating the Club's 25th Anniversary:
JEFFREY STEELE IS THE HARDEST WORKING MAN IN COUNTRY!
No kidding…Jeffrey Steele is the James Brown of Country Music ….when he performs; it's as if he has Billy Clyde's ("Semi-Tough" (1977) pissing flask taped to his leg…because Friday night Jeff got on stage at the Bluebird Café in Nashville to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this premier world famous music venue….and he stayed on that stage…..he didn't get off for almost 4 ½ hours…not a single break in the music…and Mister Steele proceeded to play almost every song he's written that has made so many great singers famous…..
Jeffrey Steele has been called the "Cole Porter of Country"….he is the most prolific and successful songwriter in town today…..I was watching Billy Ray Cyrus on CNN the other day, talking about his role as "Hannah Montana's" dad on the Disney Channel and he was discussing his new music album coming out…..with a single, "Flyin' By", written by a guy named Jeffrey Steele who Cyrus called "The greatest songwriter in the world" !!! well that may be stretching it…..and Jeffrey told me Billy Ray is a little bit of a liar…..but as far as I'm concerned …it ain't far from the truth !!!!
YOU'D NEVER KNOW THIS GUY IS THE KING OF COUNTRY SONGWRITERS!
So Jeff just wanders on to the stage Friday night, looking like a homeless biker…picks up an acoustic guitar….wraps himself around it and starts playing….every person in this packed living room like club, including Jeffrey's wife and daughter, Amy the owner and over 100 adoring fans were treated to perhaps the greatest performance of their lives !
It was truly a "Hit Parade" of songs Jeffrey has written….number one after number one ….all made famous by other singers like Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts, Trace Atkins, Montgomery Gentry, Van Zant, Dimond Rio, Kevin Sharp and Leann Rimes to just mention a few….and a new song called "This Cowboy Life is Killin' Me" that's on hold for George Strait to record.
Jeff dredged up an old song he wrote for his wife, Stephanie, called "Drunk Girl"…. and with a tattoo on the right arm of his recently deceased son Alex and his daughter on the left he performed a beautiful version of "What Hurts the Most" ….the song of the year in 2006 !
HE JUST WON'T GET OFF THE STAGE!
As the clock approached 1:45 AM…and after Jeffrey asked the crowd if he could do a couple more (for the 4th time), the "Man of Steele" with the "Heart of Gold"….in his bare feet had mercy on the crowd and did just one more….oh what a night !
Jeffrey Steele, Bob DePiro, Tony Mullins and Craig Wiseman are known all over as the "Hit Men of Music Row" …..but Purple Gene pronounces Jeffrey Steele as the…..

The credibility of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia has taken another dive after a newly developed software program exposed how the CIA, corporations like Diebold and others routinely edit entries to bury criticism and manipulate the truth.
A CalTech graduate student has developed a software tool that threatens to slam the final nail in the coffin of any credibility Wikipedia had left.
The Wikipedia Scanner also allows users to type in an IP range and find out which organizations are editing what pages on Wikipedia.
"The result: A database of 5.3 million edits, performed by 2.6 million organizations or individuals ranging from the CIA to Microsoft to Congressional offices, now linked to the edits they or someone at their organization's net address has made. Some of this appears to be transparently self-interested, either adding positive, press release-like material to entries, or deleting whole swaths of critical material," concludes the Wired report.
The White House on Tuesday assailed Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton for criticizing resident Bush in her latest television ad, calling her statements "outrageous."
The 60-second spot, which began running Tuesday in Iowa, intercuts scenes of the candidate interacting with voters and talking about challenges facing many working people.
"If you're a family that is struggling and you don't have health care, you are invisible to this president," the New York senator says in the ad. "If you're a single mom trying to find affordable child care so you can go to work, you're invisible too.
"Americans work harder than anyone else in the world, yet we're not getting rewarded," she said. "We're seeing a growing gap between the haves and have-nots that threatens the backbone of our country, the middle class that built our country."
Andy Williams (C) meets with members of the Osmond family and crew members before an Osmond 50th anniversary show at the Orleans hotel-casino in Las Vegas, Nevada August 13, 2007. The Osmond Brothers got their national debut on the Andy Williams Show, a musical variety television show, in 1962. The concert, being taped over two days by Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), will be broadcast in the U.S. in March 2008.

After a few weeks of uncertainty following a less-than-enthusiastic response from the GOP presidential candidates, the CNN-YouTube Republican debate is back on.
CNN said Monday that the debate would be held November 28. It was originally scheduled for mid-September, but most of the Republican presidential candidates had claimed scheduling conflicts. CNN and YouTube said they were working hard to resolve those conflicts, leading to the change in date.
The venue will remain the same, the Mahaffey Theatre in St. Petersburg, Fla. So will the host, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who hosted the Democratic debate in mid-July in Charleston, S.C.
A new video of Lisa Marie Presley singing "In the Ghetto," accompanied by her late father, Elvis Presley, will be posted Friday on the AOL Internet site Spinner.com, a company spokesman said Tuesday.
To mark the 30th anniversary of her father's death, Lisa Marie Presley's voice was added to the original version of her father's hit song from 1969. The video duet also features images of her late father.
Spinner.com will post the video along with the transcript of an interview with Lisa Marie Presley, AOL spokesman Kurt Patat said. In the interview, Lisa Marie Presley said the project was emotionally stirring.
Lisa Marie Presley also talks in the interview about how she was offended to see her father's song "Viva Las Vegas" used in a Viagra commercial. "I find that revolting," she said. "Some songs we have no control over. I know we didn't license that one."
The wave has crashed for "John From Cincinnati." A day after its first-season finale, HBO on Monday canceled the dark surfing drama.
Labeled by critics as "strange," "weird" and "unlikable," "John" never clicked with viewers despite a strong marketing campaign and such well-known leads as Rebecca De Mornay and Bruce Greenwood.
For the few devoted fans of the show, which David Milch ("Deadwood") created with "surf noir" author Kem Nunn, the mysterious final line in the season finale -- John saying, "Mother of God, Cass-Kai" over a shot of Kai (Keala Kennelly) surfing -- will remain just that, a mystery.

When the fourth hour of "Today" goes on the air next month, there will be a familiar feel. But expect some surprises as well, the show's executive producer promises.
"Today," one of NBC's bright spots, remains the leader in viewership and profitability after 55 years on the air. After a successful third hour launched in 2000, NBC decided to add a fourth hour, which has received clearance in more than 90% of its affiliates, many of which will air the fourth hour immediately after the first three at 10 a.m.
The network on Tuesday officially anointed Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb as co-hosts for the hour along with appearances by a cast that includes David Gregory, Giada De Laurentiis and Tiki Barber. Anchors Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira aren't involved.
A musical inspired by the hit reality television show "American Idol" has been voted off the stage in New York -- closing one day after officially opening off Broadway.
"Idol: The Musical," touted as a "satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show," closed on Monday after two casts, 47 preview performances and one regular show.
Producer Todd Ellis said in a statement that he closed the production "due to a lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources."
Don Imus has reached a settlement with CBS over his multimillion-dollar contract and is negotiating to resume his broadcasting career.
Imus and CBS Radio "have mutually agreed to settle claims that each had against the other regarding the Imus radio program on CBS," the network and Imus' attorney Martin Garbus said in a joint statement Tuesday.
The terms of the settlement will not be disclosed, according to the statement. CBS and Garbus confirmed only that the settlement had been reached.
The settlement pre-empts the dismissed radio personality's threatened $120 million breach-of-contract lawsuit.
A plaster mold of Abraham's Lincoln's face, probably made from a bronze copy of a life mask made shortly before the president's death in 1865, is seen Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at the Chicago History Museum. The plaster cast is one of two life masks used in a new study that found an unusual degree of asymmetry in the 16th president's face.

Lindsay Lohan was sued Tuesday for assault and negligence by a woman who was a passenger in a car the actress is accused of chasing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Lohan "put me through one of the most frightening experiences of my life," Tracie Rice said in a statement after the lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The lawsuit also alleges intentional infliction of emotional distress. It seeks unspecified damages and also payment of medical and other expenses related to emotional distress.
The lawsuit doesn't provide a reason for the chase. However, two men who claim they were unwilling passengers in the car driven by Lohan have said she was upset with the daughter of Michelle Peck.
Courtney Love posed for the upcoming issue of Harper's Bazaar wearing a hat, jewelry and shoes.
"Go check it out. All of the size 8s are gone," the 43-year-old singer tells the magazine in its September issue, on newsstands Aug 21. "I've lost a lot of weight, and I have done it through being quite disciplined."
Love says she now weighs about 139 pounds. She credits her new figure to visits to a clinic for "colonics and fasting" several times a year and eating a daily diet of two meal replacement shakes and "fish and macrobiotic food."
It has been reported that 50 Cent "erupted" during a meeting at his record label Interscope, after a forthcoming single and video--a collaboration with Robin Thicke--inadvertently leaked on to the Internet.
Reported by MTV News, the track "Follow My Lead" was due to be released as the third single from the rapper's forthcoming album Curtis, and after current videos for "I Get Money" and "Ayo Technology" had dropped from rotation.
According to MTV's sources, when 50 heard about the leak he reportedly ripped a plasma TV from the wall and threw his mobile phone through a window.
Comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, whose programs were once among the most viewed on YouTube, were requested by the video site to give testimony in legal proceedings as it fights a $1 billion lawsuit by Viacom Inc, according to court filings.
The two hosts of the Viacom hits "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" were listed as numbers three and four out of 32 people called by YouTube to give a deposition in Viacom's case against it and parent Google Inc, according to a document filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York last week.
Viacom sued Google and YouTube in March after failing to reach a distribution agreement. Viacom said YouTube carried the entertainment company's programs on its site without permission.
At the time, Viacom said its Comedy Central shows were among the most viewed video clips on YouTube's service overall, which allows users to upload material. Ahead of the suit, Colbert had even urged fans to make him a star on sites like YouTube.

When he was a keeper of the federal purse strings, Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska told another Republican senator who opposed the infamous "bridge to nowhere," "I don't threaten people. I promise people."
His home-state GOP colleague, Rep. Don Young, was not to be outdone. Last month he told a fellow House member who opposed education money for native Alaskans: "There is always another day when those who bite will be killed, too, and I am very good at that. Those that bite me will be bitten back."
Stevens and Young may not be promising, threatening or biting anymore, now that both are under federal investigation.
The investigations - and a questionable land deal that entangled the third member of Alaska's congressional delegation - also may have ended a modern-day gold rush that sent billions of federal dollars to the state.
Alaska's entire delegation is under an ethical cloud, something congressional historians say is unprecedented:
