M Is FOR MASHUP - July 31st, 2019

E.T.K.'s Mash Like Teen Spirit EP

By DJ Useo

E.T. K. ( www.facebook.com/adam.bednarczyk.75 ) sez "Originally released in January 29, 2011. This EP is re-released on bandcamp ( eternalkhaos.bandcamp.com/album/mash-like-teen-spirit ) for all of you to listen and download.

This project I have curated involves nothing but 90s-vs-90s mashup ideas from me and five other producers (with one exception from 2000) and it was originally intended as a LP idea and follow-up to my Frenchtastic compilation. I've released a 8 Track Compilation EP called "Mash Like Teen Spirit" (formerly known as "Rage Against The Lite Age") which includes tracks by myself, G3RSt, Oki, Hawkins, DJ Useo, DJ BritBoy and The Bedtime Sisters and is a concept piece involving 90s music mashing with each other.

Tracks by ETK (aka Eternal Khaos), G3RSt, Oki, Hawkins, DJ Useo and DJ BritBoy. Support their work and check their stuff out in links below...

G3RSt ( www.g3rst.com )

Oki ( sowndhaus.audio/profile/oki )

Hawkins ( sowndhaus.audio/profile/hawkins )

DJ Useo ( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com )

DJ BritBoy (later known as Hifi Banjo Strings) - no website at this time

Useo sez "This is a rare collection, indeed. It remains a worthy listen, imho. It's absolutely normal for most mashup projects to quickly have dead links, so it's great for E.T. K. to re-post it. The bandcamp post allows you to stream, or download at "name your price", which is a handy feature. Thanks to E.T.K. for all his efforts. I'm a big fan of his work, along with the other contributors.

Whether you're a fan of Nirvana, & 90s rock in general, this will be a pleasing experience for y'all. It's perfect tunage to help beat the Summer heat. Share the link, if you please."

Have the Summer of good -

"Dirty Foreign Hooker" is very melodic and rhythmic and the words flow smoothly off Rachel Figley's tongue. Listen to the song's preview snippet that Amazon provides and see if you agree. Norah Jones needs to cover this song so that many, many more people will hear and enjoy it." - David Bruce's review on Amazon

Note: Some people don't like intentional puns. That's understandable. Most puns are "dead" puns: We have heard these bad puns so often that they aren't funny anymore. When you find someone who says that he or she doesn't like puns, make ten good puns. That way, there will be no pun in ten dead.

Trivia Question of the Day

"I'm Coming Out", often regarded as an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community, was commisioned by, and first recorded by what American performer?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

"Like Webster's Dictionary we're Morocco bound" sang this film duo in one of their series of seven comedy films. What are the names of Dorothy Lamour's two co-stars?

Road to ... is a series of seven comedy films starring Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour. They are also often referred to as the "Road" pictures or the "Road" series. The movies were a combination of adventure, comedy, romance, and music. The minimal plot often took a back seat to gags, many of them reportedly ad-libbed by Crosby and Hope during filming.

Each film is not simply a comedy, but a satire of some of the popular film genres of the day, including jungle, Arabian nights, Alaskan adventure, and high seas.        Source

Dave replied:
Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. There were 7 "Road" pictures in all, so apparently the films were popular. The first film was "The Road to Singapore" (1940) and ended with "The Road to Hong Kong" (1962). The films were comedy/musicals, and I suppose Bing did much of the singing, while Hope made wise cracks? The 4th "Road" picture, "The Road to Utopia" was finished in 1943 but stayed in the can until its 1946 release, maybe because it would be received better after the war ended? An eighth film was planned but the project was dropped on account of Bing Crosby's sudden death in 1977. I suppose I probably watched one of the films on TV as a child but it made no lasting impression.

While in the USN I had post-wisdom tooth complications & spent a few days at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Where I got to see Bob Hope perform for the patients. Needless to say, he was a bit racier live than on the large and small screens.

Can you imagine if the trio made Road To Perdition?

The answer is Frick & Frack, I mean Hope & Crosby. I really lol at that series. ( I like TCM )

Anecdotes

Conductors

• Opera singer Nellie Melba noticed a youth who stared at her and followed her around during a time she was singing Faust at Covent Garden. She finally asked him who he was, and he replied that his name was Landon Ronald and he had just been engaged as répétiteur at Covent Garden. (Répétiteurs play piano at rehearsals and coach singers.) She asked, "Are you any good? […] Do you know Manon?" (This opera was also being performed at Covent Garden.) He replied, "Yes," and she said to him, "Very well. Come to my hotel tomorrow at twelve o'clock, and I'll see what you are made of." He showed up, and he played the opening bars of Manon without any music in front of him. Ms. Melba said, "Not so fast. You have studied this. I haven't. I want the book." They went through the first act, and Ms. Melba said to Mr. Ronald, "You play beautifully, and you seem to have a wonderful memory. Have you studied Manonfor long?" He replied, "No. I borrowed the score after the performance, and sat up learning it all last night. I had never seen it before." Of course, the young Mr. Ronald became a world-renowned conductor and composer. Ms. Melba said about this example of Mr. Ronald's work ethic, "And that is why Landon Ronald is Landon Ronald!" Of course, he did make mistakes when he was young. Everyone does. He once got in trouble while Giuseppe Campari was singing before a large audience. Mr. Ronald was unable to bring the orchestra and the singer together. Fortunately, Mr. Campari good-naturedly said, "I think we'll begin again." This time, all went well. And once Mr. Ronald played the accompaniment for Ms. Melba in the wrong key and she said to him, "Landon, please try the other key. I'm not a contralto yet!" (He had played the music for a contralto the previous night, and absent-mindedly played in the same key for Ms. Melba.) Ms. Melba believed that in cases of a mistake it is better to acknowledge it than to try to keep it secret from the audience. She said about Mr. Ronald's wrong key and its correction, "I need hardly say that every audience adores a little scene like that!"

• Anton Seidl could be cutting in his wit. He once listened to a young woman sing, but the young woman lacked vocal talent. When she asked him for his advice, he replied, "I advise you to marry some rich old tradesman." She did. And when he wanted to conduct Richard Strauss' tone poem Thus Spake Zarathustra, but the price for doing so was exorbitant, he said, "I know that Zarathustra spoke a great deal. But he didn't say that much." Mr. Seidl loved Wagnerian opera. When he was with the Neumann Company, he was scheduled to conduct Die Walküre in Italy. The King of Italy promised to attend, and the Italian custom was to stop the performance of the opera when the King, who apparently was always fashionably late, walked in. The orchestra would play the Marcia Reale (the Royal March) and then resume the opera. Mr. Seidl absolutely declined to do this, and for the performance that the King attended, the assistant conductor took over and observed the Italian custom. By the way, the German operatic tenor Max Alvary greatly respected Mr. Seidl's conducting. A lesser conductor once criticized Mr. Alvary because he had not started singing when the conductor had indicated that he should come in with his first beat. Mr. Alvary replied, "The first beat! I am an actor! I have no time to watch your beats! I was waiting for the big wall of sound to plunge into it with my voice - but the wave never came." Mr. Alvary told music critic Henry T. Finck, "When Mr. Seidl conducts, these waves of sound, be they large or small, never fail to rise."

• Richard Strauss had a rocky relationship with his wife, Pauline, and often he experienced senseless scenes with his wife yelling at him. Once, the Strausses and Lotte Lehmann were having coffee in a garden when rain suddenly arose, upsetting Pauline so much that she began yelling at her husband. Ms. Lehmann tried to defend him, saying, "But, Pauline, how can your husband stop the rain?" However, Mr. Strauss was used to bearing his wife's outbursts patiently and told Ms. Lehmann, "Don't defend me - that always makes it much worse." While conducting Die Walküre in Vienna, Mr. Strauss kept making faces. Ms. Lehmann thought that he was making faces at her because he didn't like the way she was singing, so she confronted him with an outburst after the opera. However, Mr. Strauss told her that he was making faces at a musician, and then he added that her outburst had amused him because it showed that not just his wife was capable of such senseless scenes.

• In 1943 in Zurich, Switzerland, Sir Georg Solti first heard Hans Hotter, who was singing in a performance of Die Walküre. Sir Georg was impressed: "The intensity of his characterization, stage presence, musicality and the sheer vocal power was simply wonderful." Four years later in Munich, Germany, Sir Georg conducted his first Die Walküre - Mr. Hotter sang the part of Wotan. Later, they recorded the Ring for Decca. Sir Georg asked Mr. Hotter to sing in a particular way a passage in Walküre. Mr. Hotter said, "I don't think I have ever tried that before." Sir Georg replied, "I learned it from you!" By the way, throughout his career Mr. Hotter stayed in character as Wotan, king of the gods, even when appearing before the curtain and accepting the audience's applause. A critic once wrote about him at such a time, "Hotter looks as though the audience was a nasty smell."

• Arturo Toscanini grew up in Parma, Italy, where the workers sang arias from the famous operas they loved. Unfortunately, mistakes occasionally crept into an aria due to the faulty memory of a worker. When young Toscanini heard his first opera, Giuseppe Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, he thought that the opera singers were singing it incorrectly because the workers he had listened to had sung an aria differently. Young Toscanini stood up and yelled, "No, no. You are wrong!" Then he sang the aria the way he thought it was supposed to be sung.

• As is well known, Arturo Toscanini conducted from memory because of his poor eyesight. A musician once told conductor Karl Böhm that he had told Maestro Toscanini, "Of course, you know exactly how it goes, but you don't know each individual part by heart." Maestro Toscanini replied, "Give me a test." The musician said, "Write out for me, with the bar rests, the bassoon part from the fight scene in the second act of Die Meistersinger." This was a remarkable test - but Maestro Toscanini passed it.

• Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor, once was having a hard time getting along with soprano Grace Moore during a rehearsal of Louiseat the New York Metropolitan Opera. During a break in rehearsal, Sir Thomas began to speak of other performances that he had conducted. At one, the tenor complained that the soprano was dying too soon. Sir Thomas' reply to the tenor was, "My dear Sir, no soprano ever dies too soon." This story caused Ms. Moore to laugh, and the two got along after that.

• Arturo Toscanini was known for his fabulous memory, and he often memorized scores. At a performance of Tosca, he was seen consulting a score. During intermission, a couple of surprised music lovers asked one of the musicians if Toscanini was losing his memory. The musician replied, "No, the maestro is just running through Tannhauser for tomorrow night."

• The great conductor Arturo Toscanini knew more than music. Once, he became greatly upset by a set design for a scene in Faust. He cried out, "Shame! Shame! This is no Elizabethan house. You know nothing! Read Shakespeare! Study Verdi! Then you will know what to do." He then declined to hold any rehearsals until a new, better set had been built.

The Sideshow - by Avedon Carol

Smothers Brothers

Getting fired from work isn't usually a cause to celebrate. But the Smothers Brothers aren't your run-of-the-mill comedians.

The duo has stepped out of retirement to commemorate the day 50 years ago when CBS canceled their show over their political impudence.

Tom and Dick Smothers - aged 80 and 82 respectively - reunited Monday for several appearances at the Chautauqua Institution and the nearby National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.

The two discussed their firing in an onstage discussion and later unveiled a display of archival material they donated to the center, including their iconic red suit jackets, Tom's guitar and Dick's bass, scripts and creative papers, and legal documents.

CBS abruptly yanked "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in April 1969 because of their persistent and humorous opposition to the Vietnam War, support of civil rights and tweaking authority. They welcomed controversial anti-war guests and resisted efforts to censor the show. The brothers weren't allowed to use the phrase "sex education" or joke that someone was "a known heterosexual."

Wine Is Real

Chateau Picard

Well, actually, Chateau Picard has already been real for quite a while. But ahead of Star Trek: Picard, you'll now be able to enjoy an episode or six alongside a bottle of Jean-Luc's finest.

Château Picard in Saint-Estèphe, France had actually been making wine in Bordeaux long before those fictional Picards showed up in La Barre. But now it's teamed up with CBS and Wines That Rock to bring you an official version of the wine that made the name of the Enterprise captain's family, ever since the vineyard was first glimpsed in The Next Generation's fourth season.

Being made to tie in, of course, with the upcoming Star Trek: Picard-which sees Jean-Luc retire from Starfleet and attempt to follow in his brother's footsteps, overseeing the family's wine-making business-the 2016 wine is an 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 percent Merlot blend, which means nothing to me as someone who doesn't drink. But StarTrek.com assures us that it is "subtly smoky and spicy," and has "a bright, fresh, clean-tasting style," which...sounds good? Subtly smoky and spicy feels like a decent description of Jean-Luc at his wiliest, to be fair.

Really, what you're paying for here is the fact the bottle also replicates the label seen in the first Picard teaser, so it really is like owning your very own Picard-made wine, a few centuries earlier than you should. To boot, alongside the Picard wine, there will also be a 2017 vintage United Federation of Planets wine, a Zinfandel produced not by Château Picard, but Dry Creek & Russian River Valleys in Sonoma County, California. This one sounds like an althogther more fruity endeavour, with "concentrated strawberry, blackberry, and plum preserves," and, in a manner that sounds oddly distressing, "a chewy-layered mid-palate."

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Both wines will be displayed at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention this week, ahead of a special release soon in a "1701 edition" two pack, as well as priority notification to future release in the Star Trek wine collection. Engage that palate of yours and get sloshed, why don't you?

Sentenced To Jail For Feeding Stray Cats

Cuyahoga County

Nancy Segula said, ""It began with me feeding the stray kitties."

Segula lives in Ohio, in the Garfield Heights area, where feeding stray animals is against the law. But that didn't stop her from helping out a few cats when her neighbor abandoned them.

In 2017, she received her first citation. Overall, she received four citations.

"I would always feed them and take care of them because I was worried about them and I'm a cat lover," she said. "And then, once my neighbors around here started being unhappy about it, then they called the animal warden."

Her latest citation required her to appear before a judge last week who sentenced her to spend 10 days behind bars at the Cuyahoga County Jail for feeding the cats.

Files Federal Claim

Alabama

Alabama has filed a federal court claim to ownership of the wreckage of the last ship known to bring enslaved people from Africa to the U.S., a move the archaeologist who helped find the ship says will bolster protection of the site.

The so-called admiralty claim presented by Alabama in federal court asks a judge to declare the state the true owner of the Clotilda, which was discovered earlier this year in state waters. The claim, which was filed Friday, also seeks to ensure that the Alabama Historical Commission has the exclusive right to the site.

The historical commission said in a statement that the action is an attempt to prevent salvagers from disturbing the ship or taking artifacts from it.

James Delgado, a maritime archaeologist who helped lead the team that found and verified the wreck as that of the Clotilda, said Monday that the state is taking appropriate action and called the court step "another tool in the historic preservation toolbox."

Decades after the United States banned the importation of slaves, an Alabama plantation owner made a wager that he could bring a shipload of people from Africa to the United States. In 1860, the Clotilda smuggled more than 100 enslaved people to the U.S. The ship was then taken into delta waters and burned to avoid detection.

Building Boom

Australia

The United States is planning to build additional military infrastructure in Australia once Congress gives approval to the U.S. Navy for $211.5 million, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Tuesday.

The plans for a bigger U.S. footprint in Australia come at a time when the Western allies have become increasingly concerned by China's efforts to expand its influence in the Pacific.

"The development of facilities will support the Force Posture Initiatives," Payne told Sky News, referring to agreements reached in 2011 between the United States and Australia to enhance their defence relationship.

Those initiatives entail 2,500 U.S. Marines training in Australia each year, and regular joint training between the allies' air forces.

Payne did not say what military infrastructure the United States aimed to build, but Australian media reported earlier this month that Washington had plans for a new port facility near Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory.

Uneven Distribution

Farm Bailout

More than half of the Trump administration's $8.4 billion in trade aid payments to U.S. farmers through April was received by the top 10% of recipients, the country's biggest and most successful farmers, a study by an advocacy group showed on Tuesday.

Highlighting an uneven distribution of the bailout, which was designed to help offset effects of the U.S.-China trade war, the Environmental Working Group said the top 1% of aid recipients received an average of more than $180,000 while the bottom 80% were paid less than $5,000 in aid.

The EWG, a Washington-based non-profit, said it obtained data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture through Freedom of Information Act requests for its research, the results of which could not be independently verified by Reuters.

The Trump administration last year began rolling out federal aid for farmers to compensate for lower farm good prices and lost sales after Washington's trade dispute with China wiped out a key export market for U.S. agricultural goods.

It said the first round of payments had been linked to crop production, favoring the biggest producers of certain crops. The second round, rolled out last week, would further favor big farms because it was designed to pay per acre, EWG said.

200 Reindeer

Arctic

More than 200 reindeer were found dead in the Arctic island of Svalbard, in Norway, the result of starvation induced by climate change.

The Norwegian Polar Institute said the reindeer died after climate change altered conditions in the Arctic, according to Norwegian news outlet NRK on Saturday.

Scientists from the institute found the bodies of 200 deer who died last winter, all thinner than the average weight for the animal. Female deer can weigh over 150 pounds, while male deer can weigh nearly 200 pounds..

The main food source for the reindeer is typically vegetation lying underneath the snow, but a changing climate has made accessing that food much more difficult.

As a result, reindeer have to travel farther to graze. The youngest and the eldest die first in these expeditions for food, the newspaper reported.

To Be Exhumed

John Dillinger

The body John Dillinger, who is accused of terrorizing the Midwest in the early 1930s and became a major figure of the U.S. "gangster era," will be exhumed from the Indianapolis cemetery where he has been interred for 85 years.

The Indiana State Department of Health approved a permit earlier this month to exhume Dillinger's body in September, a copy of the permit shows. It was filed by Dillinger's nephew, Michael C. Thompson, but did not list a reason for the request.

Dillinger is currently buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. His body will be reinterred on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m., according to the permit.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation called Dillinger a "notorious and vicious thief." He and his gang were accused of killing 10 men, wounding seven others, robbing banks, and staging three jailbreaks from September 1933 to July 1934, according to the agency. Dillinger was never convicted of murder.

Dillinger, who had evaded capture for months, was killed on July 22, 1934, after agents received a tip that he was going to see a movie at the Biograph Theater in Chicago.
