Lighters In The Air For Rock Mashups!
By DJ Useo
I always say mashups are perfect for when you want to hear the Rolling Stones AND Madonna, but you only have time for one. That's the essence of
bootlegging; combining various musical elements into a new arrangement that has appeal. As I've mentioned so often here in this column, most
mashups are intended for club play. It's obvious the vast majority of mashups adhere to techno, and dance formulas. I like those type plenty. So do
most of my 'audience'. But, because I enjoy such a wide swath of music, I like to work with other styles as well as club. The way I see it, there's already
a zilion mashers out there mining the club fodder for their mixes. They're doing great, too. So I feel free to mix with everything else.
Over the last few months, I noticed I was accruing a ?ne batch of Rock vs Rock mixes. It soon occurred to me to expand the number to a full discs'
worth. If you've read my column much, you'll ?nd no surprise in my decision. It started when I wanted to mix the Replacements' 'Alex Chilton'. The very
?rst acapella I tried was the Guess Who's 'American Woman'. You can hear how well it turned out as I picked that one for the ?rst track. It's really funny
to me that I did a rock vs rock album, since I was mainly into punk music until I stumbled into making mashups. I hear the music in a new way now. The
lyrics of the wrong songs pop into my head unbidden. It's a cinch to mix them into a track that sounds like it started that way.
I really got a kick out of putting Deep Purples' 'Highway Star' to the music of Bad Company's 'Shooting Star'. They seemed like such an unlikely pairing,
but I swear, if you'd never heard both songs before, you'd think they were made this way initially. I continued to have a blast combining fave rock bands
to like fave rock bands. Well, as like as you might ?nd Jethro Tull singing 'Aqualung' over Kiss' 'Love Gun'.
I remember a time when I hated AC/DC and The Grateful Dead. Well, I got over that. So on this new album, you get to hear The Grateful Dead sing over AC/DC with a good bit of Van Halen thrown
in there. There's more Van Halen as well with T.Rex singing over it. The pattern continues throughout the 18 cuts. There's a groovy animated gif
version of the cover included.
You can see it here

I'm so happy with my own reaction and that of the few I've previewed the album for that I'm still doing more rock on rock tracks, and the albums already
done. The enthusiasm thrives off itself. Currently, I'm working up a new Beatles vs Pink Floyd mix. I hope I get back to modern music as well soon.
In the meanwhile, I hope you jam out LOUD to

Samantha Bee
After Roger Ailes - former chairman and CEO of Fox News - quit last week following several allegations of sexual harassment from Fox News host Gretchen Carlson and other employees, Samantha Bee swooped in to share her thoughts.
The Full Frontal host didn't hold back a bit and immediately congratulated Ailes on "finally achieving his ultimate fantasy" of "getting fucked by two gorgeous employees at the same time."
She goes on to eloquently roast Fox News, referring to Ailes as a "creep" and ending the segment with a nod to his friendship with none other than Donald Trump.

Conventions
Democrats beat Republicans in U.S. television ratings, according to Nielsen data released on Tuesday for the first night of the Democratic National Convention.
An estimated 26 million people watched Monday evening between 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, when first lady Michelle Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders were among the key speakers, Nielsen said. The data represents people watching across seven broadcast and cable TV networks.
The total is about three million more TV eyes than for the first night of the Republican convention last week when White House contender Donald Trump's wife Melania was the keynote speaker.
All in all, some 23 million Americans watched the first night of the Republican convention last week - in line with the audience for the 2012 gathering. Trump's big acceptance speech on Thursday night last week, however, failed to deliver the record audiences many TV executives had been expecting.

Accepts First Female Candidates
Special Forces
Two women will soon be the first female soldiers to undergo training to become members of the Green Berets, the US Army's special forces, the military said Monday.
"They are the first two women who have been selected for special forces assessment" following the elimination of the ban on women in combat roles, said Major Melody Faulkenberry, a spokeswoman for the United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.
The Marines had requested some exemptions, but these were overruled by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.
Two female Marines were assigned to frontline infantry roles in May, though it will take some time before they are placed in their new roles.
Rules stipulate that a female "leadership cadre" needs to be established in their units at least three months beforehand.

Luthier's Project
"Violins of Hope"
Tucking the violin beneath his chin, the instrument's wood glistening under the packed auditorium's spotlights, Guy Braunstein's hand trembled from the weight of history.
The soloist along with a group of Jerusalem chamber orchestra musicians performed in Tel Aviv as part of a project that collects and restores violins from the Holocaust.
The "Violins of Hope" project is the brainchild of 76-year-old Israeli Amnon Weinstein, with other concerts having also been performed in Germany and the United States.
Weinstein is a luthier born into a family of Lithuanian Jews who escaped from the Holocaust.
He has spent the past 20 years in his basement workshop in Tel Aviv, where the smell of varnish hangs heavy in the air, restoring the violins which are often handed over to him in poor condition.

Plans to Sue Campaign T-rump
'USA Freedom Kids'
The father behind the pro-Donald Trump (R-Grifter) girl group, "USA Freedom Kids," which went viral after a performance during a Florida rally earlier this year, now plans to sue the Republican presidential hopeful, he said Tuesday.
Jeff Popick, who manages the Florida-based singing group and wrote a song about Trump's ability to crush America's enemies, has consulted with an attorney to file a lawsuit against the Trump campaign for violating its agreement with the group. Popick, whose daughter Alexis leads the group, claims the campaign made promises to the group in exchange for their performances, including a booth at a rally to promote the girls' albums, which never materialized.
"There is a legal issue here, but there also is a morality issue," Popick told TIME on Tuesday. "It's important that I, as a role model for the group, hold their feet to the fire."
His song, which the girls performed in January during a show that became an internet sensation, was inspired by the real estate mogul's "great heart and brilliant mind," the manager said at the time.
Now, after his experience with the Trump campaign, Popick said he is questioning whether he still believes in his lyrics. "I'm very saddened by it," he said. "I'm not really sure what to think. The fact that what he's done to my group, or lack thereof, doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't be the right guy for president. I don't know. Maybe I'm not the right person to make political commentary."

Georgia Court Says Not Against Law
'Upskirting'
A man admitted he surreptitiously took cellphone video up a woman's skirt while she shopped at a grocery store, but a Georgia court said he didn't break the law.
A divided Georgia Court of Appeals this month tossed out the conviction of former grocery store employee Brandon Lee Gary, who recorded videos up a woman's skirt - known as "upskirting" - while she shopped. The 6-3 majority opinion said Gary's behavior, while reprehensible, doesn't violate the state's invasion of privacy law, under which he was prosecuted.
In a ruling issued July 15, Judge Elizabeth Branch said it is "regrettable that no law currently exists which criminalizes Gary's reprehensible conduct."
In a strongly worded dissent, Judge Amanda Mercier argued there is no gap in the law and that Gary's actions were clearly illegal.

Republican Resigns, Cites Facebook, Twitter Hacks
Illinois
A prominent Illinois Republican has resigned from the state legislature, citing multiple incidents of fake Facebook and Twitter accounts set up in his name in recent weeks.
"After some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service," Representative Ron Sandack, House Republican floor leader, said in a resignation letter dated Sunday and provided on Monday by the Republican Caucus.
Sandack, known as an adamant defender of Republican Governor Bruce Rauner's initiatives on the floor of the Democratic-dominated House, was up for re-election in November against Democrat Greg Hose.
Sandack had been battling since July 4 to remove multiple fake Facebook and Twitter accounts in his name, he told Capitol Fax, a respected political blog based in Springfield, the state capital.
It is not clear what, if anything, the fake accounts posted in his name.

Black-Footed Ferrets
Long gone from these parts, black-footed ferrets still appear on Meeteetse's town logo, in a bronze sculpture downtown and even on coffee mugs from a downtown restaurant, remembered for when the nocturnal weasels made their last stand in the nearby sagebrush hills.
They're set to make a triumphant return.
On Tuesday, following a bit of ferret carnival at a school in Meeteetse, biologists plan to release 35 black-footed ferrets raised in captivity on two local ranches. The release will complete the circle of a story that began in 1981, when a ranch dog named Shep brought home a dead black-footed ferret and let the world know the species wasn't extinct after all.
Five years later, biologists captured the area's remaining wild ferrets for a successful captive-breeding program that since the 1990s has released hundreds of ferrets.
Now, those descendants of Meeteetse's ferrets will return to Meeteetse at last.

Marni Nixon
Hollywood voice double Marni Nixon, whose singing was heard in place of the leading actresses in such classic movie musicals as "West Side Story," ''The King and I" and "My Fair Lady," has died. She was 86.
Nixon, who was initially uncredited for her work, early on resented the dubbing work but later came to terms with it. "I realized now that this was something that would outlive me. Something that would last," she wrote in her 2006 memoir, "I Could Have Sung All Night."
In the heyday of the Hollywood musical, studios often paid big money for film rights to hit Broadway shows, then cast them with popular non-singing actors and actresses.
Such was the case with the 1956 hit "The King and I," in which filmmakers dubbed Deborah Kerr's voice with Nixon's.
Nixon did the same for Natalie Wood in 1961's "West Side Story" and Audrey Hepburn in 1964's "My Fair Lady," which had starred Julie Andrews onstage. Earlier, she added a few notes to Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."
Nixon also appeared before the cameras in 1965, in a small role as a nun in "The Sound of Music," and provided the singing voice of Grandmother Fa in the 1998 animated film "Mulan.'"
Nixon was born Margaret Nixon McEathron in 1930 in Altadena, California. The nickname Marni came from the first letters of her first and middle names.
She took up the violin as a child and later studied voice. Her first dubbing job was for young Margaret O'Brien in the 1949 film "The Secret Garden."
Nixon was married to film composer-conductor Ernest Gold, Oscar winner for "Exodus," from 1950 to 1969. A second marriage, to Dr. Lajos Fenster, in 1971 also ended in divorce. Nixon married flutist Albert Block in 1983.
Her son, Andrew Gold, was a rock musician who arranged music for Linda Ronstadt and had a top 10 hit in 1977 with "Lonely Boy." He died in 2011. She also had two daughters with her first husband, Martha and Melanie.

Youree Dell Harris (Miss Cleo)
The actress who became famous playing the Jamaican psychic Miss Cleo, claiming to know callers' futures in ubiquitous TV infomercials and commercials 15 years ago, has died of cancer.
Youree Dell Harris, 53, died Tuesday in Palm Beach, her lawyer, William J. Cone Jr., said.
The Los Angeles-born Harris was a struggling actress when the Psychic Readers Network hired her in the late 1990s to play Miss Cleo. She adopted her family's Jamaican heritage for the role, persuading viewers to call for allegedly free psychic readings.
The federal government said those "free" calls cost consumers about $1 billion. The Federal Trade Commission said the psychic service promised a free reading, but consumers calling a toll-free number were directed to a 900 number charging $4.99 per minute. The agency said nearly 6 million people made such calls and were charged an average of about $60 apiece.
After the settlement, Harris mostly faded from view for over a decade. She voiced a character in the "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" video game and was an advocate for gay rights after coming out as a lesbian.
Harris returned to the public eye in 2014 when she appeared in the documentary "Hotline," which looked at the world of telephone psychics, phone sex workers and suicide prevention specialists.

James 'Jimmy' Nederlander
James M. Nederlander, who took over the fledgling Nederlander Organization from his father and built it into one of the largest producers of live entertainment and a dominant national theater chain that includes nine Broadway houses, has died. He was 94.
"The world has lost one of its great impresarios," said his son, James L. Nederlander, who confirmed his father died on Monday.
Known as Jimmy, the elder Nederlander produced or co-produced more than 100 shows including "Annie," "Copenhagen," "The Will Rogers Follies," "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," "La Cage aux Folles," "Nine," "Noises Off" and "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby."
He won a dozen Tony Awards as a producer or co-producer - including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004 - and has presented operas, ballets, concerts and artists ranging from Rudolf Nureyev to Frank Sinatra to U2.
Founded by David T. Nederlander, the Nederlander Organization began in 1912 with the purchase of a 99-year lease on the old Detroit Opera House. In 1939, the then-17-year-old Jimmy left school to join the family business - sweeping the lobby, working as an usher and a stagehand and selling tickets in the box office.
By 1943, Jimmy Nederlander was in New York City as a serviceman in the Air Force and worked as box-office treasurer for a production of Moss Hart's "Winged Victory." In 1964, his father bought the Palace Theatre, a historic vaudeville house that had gone into decline. After a two-year renovation, Nederlander's reopened the Palace with Bob Fosse's production of "Sweet Charity," starring Gwen Verdon. After his father died in 1967, Nederlander took over running the family business.
With Nederlander's son Jimmy Jr. currently overseeing the organization's daily operation, the Nederlander Organization has passed the baton to a third generation. His nephew, Robert Nederlander Jr., is president of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment, which manages theaters and presents Broadway productions in international markets.
Nederlander is also survived by his wife, Charlene S. Nederlander; daughter-in-law Margo M. Nederlander; his grandchildren, James M. Nederlander II and Kathleen M. Nederlander; his stepdaughter, Kristina Gustafson; and her children, Gunnar and Krisanna Gustafson. Funeral services will be Thursday.
