As often as I hear the words "MASHUPS ARE DEAD" (they aren't), I hear people say "Beatles mashups are played out" (not by a long shot). It's not hard at all to direct your attention to tons of great new tracks that feature the four lads from Liverpool. Elocnep ( www.elocnep.com/Bootlegs/2009/ ) has managed a very popular track with his 'Queens Of The Stone Age vs The Beatles'. Titans of bootleg Loo And Placido ( www.looandplacido.com/home.php?lang=en ) rocked everyone's world with 'Safari Love' (The Beatles vs Elton John vs Aretha Franklin vs Placido singing The Pixies). Even Masters of mashup Team9 ( www.team9.net/ ) have veered into the world of the Fab Four using The Beatles 'Back in the USSR' vs. Digitalism's 'Zdarlight'. These top mixers all enjoy an occasional use of the Beatles, but there's an entire site where only Beatles Mashups dwell.
The Beatles' Remixers forum claims a good community of posters where every track has at least one of the Beatles in it & generally all four. I've even heard a few with Yoko Ono. :) Reigning from his position of experience with Beatles' mashups is MP3J ( mp3j.podomatic.com/ ). Through his dedication & endlessly-inspired creativity he has thrilled countless with a large back catalogue & even provided a fine home to like-minded mixers. None of them claim any rights to the tunes they produce, instead allowing them to stand as examples of mixing skill, while consistently touting the thrill of the Beatles' releases. Many is the time I heard from a mashup fan who, once exposed to their music through a mashup, proceeded to pick up the official releases.
MP3J began his lengthy bootleg career in the early days of GET YOUR BOOTLEG ON ( www.gybo5.com ) & mainly confined himself to tracks that cut & sampled the Beatles while contrasting them with modern artists like Eminem, Bloc Party & Coldplay. Despite the passage of time, he continues to provide amazing examples of his advanced ability to hear the commonalities between the Beatles' output & other artists. The clearest examples of his success in the genre is his outstanding 'WTF' series, which has reached the astonishing number of 55! The 'WTF' series brings you over an hour of MP3J Beatles' boots combined into one long sequence & manages to get better & better as they continue. Rather than becoming rehashes of played-out music as some naysayers have said to me, the series never lets up in it's finely-mixed & inspired pairings.
Sometimes it's intimidating to follow in his large footsteps, but he has lured many other talented mixers of the Beatles to the Beatles' Remixers forum. Upon arriving at BR (as many call it) you will bear witness to the regular posts of BDJ ( bdj.podomatic.com/ ) , Patamixical Science ( patamixicalscience.podomatic.com/ ), & Phatbuzz ( phattbuzz.podomatic.com/ ) amongst others. Other great mixing members include Voicedude, Phil Retrospector, & DJ Not-I. It's a good close-knit community with over 150 members. None of it would exist without the pioneering mixing of MP3J. To tell the truth, there doesn't look to be any let-up in the Beatles' mashing anytime soon.
An active part of MP3J's site is the monthly Beatles' track challenge where a single track is chosen & the members are encouraged to try their hands at it. It's not easy to be assigned a track to mix. Many bootleggers never even attempt it. It's hard enough to do a GYBO challenge where the type of music is determined for you. With the BR challenge, you have to use a specific track.
This recent month the track is harder than most. Mixers must employ the unreleased Beatles' track, 'Sour Milk Sea'. I barely knew the track existed, let along entertained dreams of mashing it. Check out the variations for yourself with a visit to the forum. You can even find a link to my new track 'Sour Milk Relax' (Beatles vs Mika).
It's a never-ending parade of Beatles' chocolate goodness wrapped up in marshmallow mashup madness at BR. I firmly believe if you try one Beatles' mashup, you will look back after a few years to find you have enjoyed a lot of them & even picked up some classic Beatles' records from the fine folks at Apple Corps.

Sister Fidelis, a Holy Cross Sister, gave her life helping wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. She worked in a Union hospital for six months, then she died because the overwork had weakened her body so much that it could not fight off illness. Dr. McMahon cared for her during her illness. He once remarked on the improvements that had been made to the exterior of the hospital, and Sister Fidelis said that she had never seen the exterior of the hospital: "It was evening when I came." Dr. McMahon asked her, "You have never seen the outside of the hospital where you have been living for six months?" It was true. Sister Fidelis had been working inside the hospital, taking care of wounded soldiers. She had not taken the time to go outside.

AIDS activist Kate Barnhart once demonstrated outside a board of education, a reporter for a Catholic TV station interviewed her. The reporter asked if she used condoms, and she answered no. Hearing this, the reporter thought that this was a contradiction in Ms. Barnhart's position, so he asked, "You mean you don't use condoms during sex?" Ms. Barnhart explained that she doesn't have sex. The reporter then asked, "Well, since you believe in abstinence, would you recommend that other young people do as you do?" She replied, "Sure, I would recommend that all young people spend their time out here on the streets demonstrating for AIDS education."

The 'Disappearing Dailies' Edition
Newspapers are in major trouble. Some notable dailies such as The Rocky Mountain News, Cincinnati Post and Baltimore Examiner have folded completely. Others such as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Detroit Free Press, Detroit News and my home town paper, The Bay City Times, among others, have adopted a hybrid on-line only and/or partial printing scheme trying to survive. All papers are losing money hand over fist, laying off workers and renegotiating labor contracts. (newspaperdeathwatch.com)

Settles Lawsuit, Receives Apology
Jackson Browne
Jackson Browne has settled a lawsuit and received an apology from Sen. John McCain and the Republican Party over use of his song "Running on Empty" during last year's presidential campaign.
The settlement announced Tuesday includes a pledge by the GOP not to use any musicians' work without proper permission in future campaigns, a statement that Browne said he hoped would benefit other artists.
Browne sued McCain and the Republican National Committee and the Ohio Republican Party last year over use of "Running on Empty" in a Web ad mocking Democrat Barack Obama's proposed energy policies.
Browne said he hoped the lawsuit and its successful resolution would have an impact on future political campaigns by putting an end to cavalier attitudes about artists' copyrights.

Judge Reinstates Fraud Claim Against CBS
Dan Rather
A New York judge reinstated part of former TV news anchor Dan Rather's $70 million lawsuit against CBS on Tuesday, although the ruling could be legally meaningless if an appeals court dismisses the entire case.
New York State Supreme Court Judge Ira Gammerman ruled that Rather could sue CBS Corp for fraud, relating to Rather's claim that CBS made him a scapegoat in a scandal over a 2004 report on then-resident George W. Bush's military record.
Rather claims CBS breached his contract and its fiduciary duty in part by not giving him enough on-air assignments after he was removed as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" in March 2005.
On Tuesday, Gammerman accepted an amended complaint showing Rather's income had been reduced by several million dollars following his departure from CBS.

Siblings Authorize Biopics
Bruce Lee
Bruce Lee's older sister and younger brother have authorized a Chinese company to make a series of biographical films about the late kung fu icon, saying they want to produce a historically accurate account of their brother's life.
Phoebe Lee and Robert Lee appeared at a signing ceremony with J.A. Media in Beijing on Monday, 36 years to the day after Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong at age 32 from swelling of the brain.
It wasn't immediately clear who will play Lee in the film series.
Producer Manfred Wong said the company plans at least three installments, with the first to tackle Lee's teenage years, adding he wanted to focus more on the late actor's personality.

Community Service
Jamie Waylett
A judge has sentenced a cast member of the "Harry Potter" films to 120 hours of community service for growing marijuana.
Twenty-year-old Jamie Waylett, who plays school bully Vincent Crabbe in the magical movie franchise, pleaded guilty to producing the drug at a court hearing last week.
Prosecutors say police found 10 marijuana plants growing in a bedroom at Waylett's mother's London house.
Producing cannabis carries a maximum 14-year sentence. Judge Timothy Workman said Tuesday that he accepted the cultivation was on a small scale and for Waylett's own use.

Charge Dropped
Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Prosecutors dropped a disorderly conduct charge Tuesday against prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., who was arrested after forcing his way into his own house in what he and other blacks say was an outrageous but all-too-common example of how police treat them.
The city of Cambridge called the arrest "regrettable and unfortunate," and police and Gates agreed that dropping the charge was a just resolution - though not one that quelled the anger of one of America's top academics.
"I'm outraged," Gates said in extensive comments made to TheRoot.com , a Web site he oversees. "I can't believe that an individual policeman on the Cambridge police force would treat any African-American male this way, and I am astonished that this happened to me; and more importantly I'm astonished that it could happen to any citizen of the United States, no matter what their race.
Gates, 58, is director of Harvard's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research and is a documentary host. He was arrested upon his return home from China, where he working on his latest film. He said he's now inspired to work on a documentary about racial profiling.

Assault Charge Dropped
Kiefer Sutherland
Kiefer Sutherland's legal troubles for allegedly head-butting a fashion designer in a New York City nightclub are over.
The Manhattan district attorney's spokeswoman said Tuesday that misdemeanor assault charges against the actor are being dropped because the alleged victim wouldn't cooperate with prosecutors.
The star of the Fox TV show "24" was charged in May after designer Jack McCollough said Sutherland head-butted him and broke his nose in a Manhattan nightclub.
Sutherland and McCollough issued a joint statement a few weeks later saying they had resolved their differences. Sutherland apologized to McCollough in the statement.

Files For Bankruptcy
Stephen Baldwin
Actor Stephen Baldwin filed for bankruptcy in New York on Tuesday, according to a court document that says he is millions in debt.
The 43-year-old actor, who has described himself as a born-again Christian, filed for Chapter 11 protection claiming he owes more than $2.3 million and owns a New York property valued at only $1.1 million. His wife, Kennya Baldwin, also is named in the document.
Baldwin, who has appeared in films including "The Usual Suspects" in 1995 as well as more recently in U.S. celebrity and reality television shows, owes about $1.2 million on two mortgages on the New York property and more than $1 million in taxes. He also has credit card debt, court papers showed.

Brother Arraigned On New Charges
Dane Cook
The half brother of Dane Cook has pleaded not guilty to additional charges that he stole millions of dollars from the comedian.
Darryl McCauley was arraigned Tuesday in Middlesex Superior Court in Massachusetts. He was ordered to continue to be held on $1 million bail.
Prosecutors say the 43-year-old Wilmington man wrote company checks to himself and transferred funds into his personal bank accounts while working as Cook's business manager.
McCauley was arrested in December and initially indicted in March. Earlier this month, a grand jury indicted him on 20 additional charges of larceny over $250.

Making Political Hay
Jackson Memorial
Investigators looking into the chain of events that led City Hall to spend an estimated $1.4 million for police protection and other services at Michael Jackson's memorial have turned up possible criminal wrongdoing, the city attorney said Tuesday.
City Attorney Carmen Trutanich (R - Politically-Motivated-Grandstander) has been reviewing the procedures that led the city to deploy thousands of police and other city workers for the star-studded tribute at the downtown Staples Center, hoping to identify a way for taxpayers to recoup at least some of the money.
The city attorney's office prosecutes misdemeanors, but the office could also pass on any evidence it uncovers of more serious violations to the county district attorney.
The City Council is seeking a full accounting of the taxpayer dollars committed to Jackson's tribute. Councilman Dennis Zine (R - Code-Talking-Grandstander) has said the cost of the event could far surpass the estimate.

Moose Jaw Shutdown
Hawks
Two nesting hawks have managed to do what Canada's blizzards usually can't -- halt delivery of the mail to a few dozen homes in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Canada Post said it stopped delivering to 54 Moose Jaw homes after hawks swooped down on a letter carrier and after a supervisor who came in to inspect the area had to dive for cover. Later, another carrier was attacked two blocks away.
Mischelle Read, who lives on one of two blocks affected by the mail stoppage, saw the hawk swoop at a letter carrier in May before mail delivery stopped.
But Read, who now picks up her mail at the post office, said her children continue to play outside. "It's not worrying me," she said.
