M Is FOR MASHUP - July 16th, 2008

Finest Kind Internet Radio

By DJ Petrushka

Hi everyone, DJ Petrushka here, sitting in for DJ Useo. I just love music, and because of that, I found this wonderful site called Global DJ Network. I know you have heard DJ Useo speak of it, so I thought I might go into some details.

This site is literally a community for mixers, mashers and remixers. I belong to this site, as I myself make mixes and the very occasional mash. GDJN also has an internet radio station, and DJ Useo and myself listen every weekend to some of the best music that we have ever heard. Do yourself a favor, and click on the radio link here, right now, so you can listen and see what I mean while you read this column.
Real Player                    Media Player                    Winamp

The forum at GDJN is a wide and varied one, with lots of interesting tracks/mixes/mashes posted from the members. There are video links, info on how to use programs for your mixing at the computer, and so much more. The main thing that draws me there is the wonderful sense of community. I spend long hours there chatting on the shoutbox with my DJ friends while they play their shows, and yet the time passes so fast. It's the most wonderful thing in the world for me to be able to tell people how much joy their music brings me directly. The energy the DJ's are putting into their craft is being returned immediately by those who also share their passion for music. All my life I have wished for a way to tell musicians how much I love their music, and now I can, so for me, this site is a dream come true.

Now, to talk about the people. The site has been and is provided for us by a wonderful DJ, Mads. Welshy does great technical work on our site, and provides friendly company when he does drop in. You will be hearing many varied styles of music when here. There are mashup shows, 80's rock/punk, hiphop, fidget, and plenty of bootleg remixes, and white labels that you won't hear anywhere else. Many of these DJ'S even do live turntabling that put a whole new spin on the records you own. And lately, there have been some really awesome live DJ battles. The DJ battles are really great, as these DJ's tend to be ones that play clubs now in their private lives, so the skills are amazing. The live challenges so far are like this: each DJ taking 30 minutes to mix his best, live, and then another DJ takes the next 30. And if there are only two DJ's battling, the competition gets really intense. You can feel from the energy in the music the competiton and yet it's for the love of the music that we do it.

I myself am gearing up for a battle, altho mine will be pre-recorded mix sets, and not live mixing. My good friend DJ Fac from Switzerland will be squaring off with me in a mashup battle. Each one of us is making two 30 minute sets to see who has the better taste in mashups. Dj Fac is a formidable opponant, a very talented masher in his own write, so I think it will be close. DJ Useo will let you know next week where and when. It's wonderful that we have this community, and we really are global. We hail from the USA, the UK, Scotland, Switzerland, and Canada, to name just a few places. The main shows right now are done by Mads,PellaPushers, DogCore, Aekon, Guv'nor, Sfreeman41, Kitchmix/CorruptDJ'S, Dottysmash, DJ Useo and Myself, DJ Petrushka. I really hope you come and join us to listen to some great music. You can hear some awesome talent, and you might get spoiled, because there are no commercials, just lovely music.

Mix of the week: GDJN The Sunshine Sessions Part 3 The Freeman. All parts are awesome, but I picked part 3 as my fave this week.
www.globaldjnetwork.com/community/

Please note, these are member only mixes, but I promise you, they are way worth the joining, and after all, it's totally free.

Mashup tip of the week - Tune in, turn on, mashup.

Buzzcook's Trivia Question Of The Day

Thomas Dorr almost did what?

A:    Became the second man to reach the South Pole
   B:    Became Vice President
   C:    Invented the Comptometer
D:    Survived going over Niagara Falls
E:    Took over the State of Maryland

Send your answer to Marty

Buzzcook's Trivia Question from Yesterday

Who commanded the Army of the Potomac at the end of the Civil War?

   A:    U.S. Grant
   B:    Henry Hallack
  C:    George Meade
   D:    Winfield Scott
   E:    Phil Sheridan                 Source

Vic in AK was first, and correct, with:
C: George Meade ....but with that horses ass US Grant breathing down his neck all the time, cuz he wanted it to be his headquarters command.
Now I dont know about the rest of you but I cant work with my boss watching everything I do..just cant. What was worse was Grant had a sweetheart deal with the press that anything good that the AOP did was credited to him and all the FUBAR stuffs was Meades Fault...How Sucky is THAT???

Maurice responded:
   Grant

Kenneth in Big D answered:
   C. George Meade. Grant was commander of all Union forces, although he tagged along with the Army of the Potomac on its overland campaign of 1864 - 65.

Ed the Teacher replied rhetorically:
   Wasn't it John McCain?

Charlie replied:
A bit tricky. Grant, of course, was overall commander of the Union forces at the end of the war, but the Army of the Potomac, since just before Gettysburg, was still commanded by
  C: George Meade

socdan wrote:
Well... it depends. The original Army of the Potomac was a Confederate army that was changed to the Army of Virginia (I think) in the middle of the Civil (!) War. Since I don't cotton to rebranding, it remains the Army of the Potomac. It was commanded by Robert E. Lee at the surrender at Appomatox, in Arpil 1865, after which it was immediately disbanded. The war ended more or less in June 1865. The usurper Army of the Potomac was a Union army commanded by Georege Meade at the time that Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomatox, and remained intact until after the war more or less ended.

Alan J answered:
   George Meade

Sally said:
Let's see, as I recall by circa 1865 Ulysses S. Grant was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and placed in command of all federal armies. Grant¢s trusted subordinates, particularly William Tecumseh Sherman, followed him to Washington, DC. George Meade would remain in command of the, "Army of the Potomac" and General Grant would travel with the army, commanding the forces from the field and only traveling to Washington when necessary. Guess my answer would be "C."
Monument of Major General George Gordon Meade on his horse, Old Baldy.   ~~~~~>
PS I am waiting for the SIL to pick me up - we are going to see the "All Stars" before the big/final Baseball game at the soon-to-be demolished Yankee Stadium. The precious grandson (age 8) and his friend (AWA the SIL) are ecstatic...
They are all Baseball nuts :)

mechadavef responded:
General Meade commanded the Army of the Potomac from shortly before Gettysburg until Lee's surrender. U.S. Grant generally accompanied this army after his promotion to the General commanding all U.S. Armies, and many people believe that Grant exercised general command.

Dave in Tucson replied:
Finally! One that I know! George Meade was the Army of the Potomac from just before the Battle of Gettysburg until the end of the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant was the commander of all Union armies when the Civil War ended.

BadtotheboneBob said:
C: George Meade, although Grant was in overall command of all federal forces and made the major decisions in the last year of the war... Meanwhile, my great-great grandfather was with the 12th Michigan Infantry out in the wilds of northern Arkansas after surviving the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg amongst other engagements in the western theater.

Mike in Des Moines answered:
I think it's C: George Meade. He was in charge of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg. Hallack was the equivalent of Chief of Staff, Scott had been retired (you could have tried to throw people off by listing Winfield Scott Hancock) and Sheridan was the head of US Cavalry. Grant by this time was the only Lieutenant General in the US Army and was General in Chief, but left Meade running the Army of the Potomac.
We could sure use any one of these guys now.

And, Joe Bacon replied:
I think Meade (c) was still the commander of the Army of the Potomac at the end of the war

Thanks to Buzzcook for yesterday & today's question.

Thanks to Vic in AK, Charlie, and Sally for today's pictures.

Returning To TV On "Rescue Me"

Michael J. Fox

Actor Michael J. Fox, semi-retired from show business due to Parkinson's disease, will return to television next spring as a guest star on the firefighting drama "Rescue Me," the FX cable network said on Tuesday.

Fox, 47, will portray the wheelchair-bound boyfriend of the ex-wife of the show's lead character, New York City firefighter Tommy Gavin, played by Denis Leary, said FX spokesman John Solberg.

Canadian-born Fox has signed on to appear in four episodes of the upcoming fifth season, starting with a premiere episode in the spring.

X-Files Memorabilia For Charity

Gillian Anderson

X-Files star Gillian Anderson is selling off her vast collection of memorabilia from the cult sci-fi show to raise cash for her favourite charities.

More than 500 rare and signed items will be auctioned off by website eBay.com's Giving Works charity division from 17 July, as fans of the hit TV show franchise get ready for the new X-Files film, I Want To Believe.

And Anderson admits there are one or two keepsakes she's already having second thoughts about selling.

She says, "There's an FBI file that I'm a bit hesitant to auction because it may be one of only two in existence - but I'm doing it anyway.

Montreux Honors

Quincy Jones

Quincy Jones, the trailblazing Grammy Award-winning producer and composer, was feted for his music and humanity at a 75th birthday party which brought Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, Mick Hucknall and more to Montreux's fabled stage.

Veterans Al Jarreau, Nana Mouskouri and Petula Clark as well as emerging stars Ledisi, Angelique Kidjo and Paulo Nutini took turns singing hits which he made over the decades.

The nearly six-hour concert ended at two in the morning on Tuesday with dozens of performers singing "Happy Birthday" to the legend known as "Q" who admitted to health problems.

"I've had two aneurysms, but I'm glad God wasn't ready to take me. I stopped drinking six months ago or I would never have survived this," said the African-American who was born in Chicago on March 14, 1933.

New US Postage Stamps

Josephine Baker

The time is 1935, and Josephine Baker, the St. Louis native who transfixed France and much of Europe with song and dance stares out from a poster advertising the film "Princess Tam-Tam." Baker starred as a simple African woman presented to Paris society as royalty.

Baker's movie is one of five recalled on a set of U.S. postage stamps being released Wednesday to honor vintage black cinema. Ceremonies marking the sale of the stamps will be held at the Newark Museum in New Jersey, which is holding a black film festival.

"So many things happened in her life that she had never expected," her son Jean-Claude Baker said Tuesday.

Josephine Baker may be best remembered in the United States for her singing and dancing in Europe, but she also earned military honors as an undercover agent for the French resistance in World War II. Later, she was active in civil rights work and appeared with Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington in 1963.

`Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road'

Ben & Jerry

Ben & Jerry's has done it again: Hoping to honor rocker Elton John before his first-ever Vermont performance, Vermont's crazy-cool confectioner has whipped up a flavor just for him - "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road."

The limited-batch ice cream, made from "an outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks," is a take-off on his 1970s album and song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

The Burlington-based ice cream maker - whose rock 'n' roll-themed products have honored late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia ("Cherry Garcia") and Vermont-bred jam rockers Phish ("PhishFood") - wanted to toast John because he was finally getting around to playing the Green Mountain State.

Atavistic Attitudes

Gramps

Advocates for gay and lesbian parents are denouncing Sen. John McCain, an adoptive father himself, for opposing adoptions by gays, which prompted his presidential campaign to clarify Tuesday that he does not seek a federal ban on the practice.

The Republican nominee-in-waiting was asked for his views on the subject in an interview published Sunday in The New York Times.

"I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption," McCain replied.

McCain then remarked that he and his wife, Cindy, were proud to be adoptive parents of a daughter born in Bangladesh, and he encouraged others to adopt. Asked if those adopting should be a "traditional couple," McCain answered, "Yes."

Shocking - Liar Lies!

Turd Blossom

Former White House aide Karl Rove denied on Monday that his close ties with Republican politics and John McCain's presidential campaign undermine his credibility as an election analyst for the Fox News Channel.

Appearing at a gathering of television critics in Beverly Hills, Rove and network executive John Moody brushed aside suggestions that Rove's continued involvement in the presidential race, informal or not, might pose a conflict in his capacity as a Fox News contributor.

Rove also dismissed the notion that his refusal to answer congressional subpoenas to testify in a probe of the Bush administration's firing of federal prosecutors amounted to too much political baggage for a network news analyst to carry.

Fox News host Chris Wallace came to Rove's defense, asking rhetorically, "Why it is that if Congress and the White House are having a fight about executive power, that that should in any way constrain an independent news organization's decision as to who is it going to have on its payroll?"

Bizarro World Nuremberg

Omar Khadr

Omar Khadr, the only western prisoner still held in the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, broke down and wept when questioned by Canadian interrogators, video footage released on Tuesday shows.

Khadr, a Canadian, was arrested in Afghanistan in 2002 at the age of 15 and is charged with killing a U.S. medic. The secret video was taken in February 2003 and shows Khadr -- then 16 -- being grilled by officials from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service spy agency.

The poor quality footage -- recorded by cameras hidden in the room -- offers a rare glimpse into the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, facility, where the United States is holding about 265 prisoners in conditions criticized by human rights groups.

A screenwriter's lawsuit seeking higher payments from Mel 'Sugar Tits' Gibson and others for "The Passion of the Christ" has just completed its first edit.

The suit was originally filed in February. A judge ordered attorneys for screenwriter Benedict Fitzgerald to rewrite the complaint last month, saying it lacked specificity and seemed to take a "chain letter" approach.

Fitzgerald's lawyers filed their rewrite Monday against Gibson, Icon Productions, Marquis Films and others over payments for the screenplay. The suit seeks at least $10 million, claiming that Gibson and others vastly understated the budget for the 2004 blockbuster.

Fitzgerald claims the result is that he was underpaid for his work on the film, which he says began in 2001. His suit also claims that Gibson told him the actor didn't want to make any money off the film because he considered it "a personal gift to his faith."

Gov. Arnold $chwarzenegger named Playboy covergirl and animal rights activist Bo Derek (R-Loves Chimpy) on Tuesday to a state commission overseeing horse racing.

Derek, 51, is a horse lover who has lobbied Congress for the past five years to ban the slaughter of the animals. She also owns the pet care products company Bless the Beasts, which sells such items as dog shampoos, conditioner and fur polish.

She also wrote the book "Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horses." Her Web site said the autobiography links her life lessons with her understanding of horses.

SC Judge OKs Auction

James Brown

A South Carolina judge says an auction of James Brown's belongings in New York can go forward as planned this week.

South Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Jasper Cureton on Monday lifted a temporary stay that could have held up the sale of the late soul singer's belongings.

To Spend More Time With Family

Brit Hume

Fox News Channel anchor Brit Hume will take a reduced role at the network following the elections.

Hume won't retire completely but will no longer be Fox News' Washington managing editor nor anchor of the 6 p.m. newscast "Special Report." But he will remain with the network as a panelist on "Fox News Sunday," host special events for the channel and also have an office in the Washington bureau.

The Washington Post, which first broke the story, likened Hume's new position as the kind of deal that retired "Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw has with NBC. The contract, which has yet to be finalized, will call for Hume to work about 100 days. Hume wanted to reduce his role to spend more time with his family.

Oregon Hospital To Be Torn Down

Cuckoo's Nest

Oregon State Hospital, the mental institution where the 1975 movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed, is making way for a new complex. Most of the dilapidated, 125-year-old main building will be torn down and replaced starting this fall.

Although mean Nurse Ratched was pure fiction, the Oregon State Hospital has struggled with some very real troubles over the years, including overcrowding, crumbling floors and ceilings, outbreaks of scabies and stomach flu, sexual abuse of children by staff members, and patient-on-patient assaults.

Although "Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed here, neither the movie nor the 1962 Ken Kesey novel on which it was based made any specific references to Oregon State Hospital. Kesey drew on his experiences working at a veterans hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., and set his satirical story at an unnamed institution in Oregon.

Dead Zone May Grow Larger Than Ever

Gulf of Mexico

An annual dead zone that develops in the Gulf of Mexico could be larger than ever this summer, scientists said today.

The region, largely devoid of life, develops when an overgrowth of algae, fueled in part by agricultural runoff, robs the sea of oxygen, and other organisms can't survive.

The researchers are predicting the area could measure a record 8,800 square miles, or roughly the size of New Jersey. In 2007, the dead zone was 7,903 square miles. The largest dead zone on record was in 2002, when it measured 8,481 square miles. Researchers began taking regular measurements of the dead zone in 1985.

Research indicates that the nearly tripling of nitrogen levels into the Gulf over the past 50 years from human activities has led to a dramatic increase in the size of the dead zone, according to a statement released today by NOAA, parent of the National Weather Service.
